  • This video is from an Instagram Live that Rachel from Lush Little Jungle (@lushlittlejungle on IG) did with me on May 16th, 2020 on the topic of propagation - general propagation tips and techniques, managing transition from water to soil, is a V-cut better than a straight cut...Here is the list of questions we covered:
    • 5:30 - What is propagation
    • 5:59 - Common forms of propagation
    • 6:58 - Other forms of propagation
    • 9:55 - Easiest plants to propagate
    • 15:53 - Which plant are the slowest to propagate?
    • 17:55 - My favorite plant to propagate
    • 20:19 - Which plants are the trickiest to propagate
    • 21:40 - How to figure out if a plant can be propagated and how to figure out which propagation method to use
    • 25:55 - For people who are worried they will hurt a plant by cutting it & what happens to a plant when you take a cutting
    • 31:40 - Does the color of the propagation vessel affect propagation?
    • 34:55 - General water propagation tips
    • 38:45 - Size matters (cutting size)
    • 39:05 - Why do overwatered plants in soil die but they can live in water?
    • 41:23 - How often do I recommend changing the water
    • 46:00 - Any spots to avoid when propagating?
    • 49:46 - Is there a benefit in the shape of the propagation vessels
    • 52:09 - Do I recommend removing leaves when propagating in water, or are they ok with getting in contact with water
    • 52:46 - What kind of water do I recommend using for propagation - tap water, rainwater...?
    • 55:47- How do you know it’s time to move a cutting from water to soil
    • 57:14 - Tips on managing a transplant to soil (how to increase chances of survival)
    • 1:01:47 - Does a V-shape cut help with rooting, compared to a straight-cut
    • 1:04:47 - Are there plants that are best propagated in soil?
    • 1:06:40 - How I water propagate succulents
    • 1:13:15 - General propagation tips we haven’t already covered

PRODUCT THAT I USE AND LOVE THAT CAN SPEED UP PROPAGATION (affiliate links):
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Heat mat (place underneath the propagation vessel to warm it up, can cut propagation time in half)
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - an air pump provides a constant inflow of oxygen which speeds up propagation. Oxygen is crucial for healthy root development
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - humidity dome for soil propagation
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - rooting hormone, for plants that are not easy to propagate
    FERTILIZER
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Dyna Gro fertilizer, excellent for tropical plants, contains all 16 minerals houseplants need
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Espoma succulent and cacti fertilizer
    LIGHT METERS
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Dr. Meter light meter, the only way to know that you're providing your plants with sufficient light
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Most light meters apps are incorrect, this one has been pre-calibrated for a variety of cell phones
IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH NATURAL LIGHT, YOU CAN USE GROW LIGHTS TO SPEED UP PROPAGATION:
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - 60W Sansi grow light (for large plants)
➡️ www.mrhousepla... - 15W Sansi grow light (for smaller plants)
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - 15w Sansi grow light
➡️ www.mrhousepla... cable for Sansi grow lights
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - shelf grow light
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Soltech Solution's 20W light - Soltech Solutions grow lights
    ➡️ www.mrhousepla... - Soltech Solution's 40W light - Soltech Solutions grow lights

➡️ BOOK A VIRTUAL HOUSEPLANT CONSULTATION, let me help you:
Are you just starting out with houseplants and don't know where to begin? Are you struggling with certain plants, you've tried everything, but they're not getting better?

Loved how you took the time to book mark each topic! I find the v-shape cut roots faster too

Thanks, I know that something like that (marking the time for each topic) would sometimes be helpful for me, so I thought others might appreciate it too :) Have you conducted an experiment in a controlled environment, where you had, lets say, 5-10 cuttings with a straight cut and 5-10 cuttings with a V-cut, and had them in the exact same condition? I find that often times people use their personal experience to make a generalization, without conducting a proper experiment (which I understand can be a bit hard to do at home), so I'm curious to learn more about how you did it? I plan on doing a proper experiment when I get back to the US, in a few weeks :)

How long did it take with a V-cut, how long with a regular cut?
