I put mine outside in deep shade about 15 years ago and then kind of forgot about it. When I did remember, it had been sitting there for about a year and the roots had gone through the bottom of the pot so I ended up leaving it in that spot permanently. Now it has grown so tall that it has broken through the plant that was giving it shade and amazingly, it suffers our very hot and dry summer heat of over 40ºC and 15-20% RH almost every day. But somehow it has adapted and is thriving.
Also, I do braid mine. There’s a video on RUclips in which someone shows how her 10-year-old money tree looks, and it turns out that the stems really need the support of being braided together.
So funny to see the Dutch mountains in the background of your picture for the Netherlands. (I'm Dutch.) Clearly, the Dutch mountains is where unicorns live happily ever after - happily galloping among the money trees, apparently.
I got mine last summer as a baby. I live in Louisiana sometimes the temperature gets close too 100 degrees. Mine stays in the direct sun all day long & only gets water when it rains. My money tree is over 4 feet tall. I do absolutely nothing too it & it's so absolutely beautiful.
I actually unknoted mine after one died. Now, the 4 that are left are loving life. Got Mr Sheffield's moisture meter for Christmas and as you say, "it's a (plant) life saver" 😊
This is my first and best plant that I've grown at my office! I've had it for 2 years now, and once I see signs of spring growth I'm going to cut a lot of it back for the very first time. I'm nervous but excited!
I got one from Ikea and I choose one with a broken stem, it was like fold. (in the green part) because I love saving plants 😅 I just add a tutor nothing more and it healed it self😊 now it's visible if you search for it.😅
You can absolutely put one of these in direct sun in a south facing window. (Or a north facing window if you’re in the southern hemisphere) You just need to acclimate it slowly. Best time to do so is in the late winter or early spring (like this time of year in the northern hemisphere) Start out several feet from the window and move it 6 to 8 inches closer every week. Once they get accustomed to the sun they grow MUCH faster and suck up water a lot quicker too. Letting them dry out completely between waterings occasionally helps encourage the trunks to thicken and store more water. Lots of people grow these as landscaping trees here in South Florida. They do very well in direct sun.
I got one like 2 years ago for mother's Day or some event and it's clinging on it has grown but it definitely turns yellow and looks droopy a lot of the time
Mine lives outdoors in full sun. I live in the Caribbean, so it is a very hot and humid tropical climate. It is about 8 feet tall. I water every day. I am not the best plant parent and most of my plants suffer my lack of know how but this guy seems happy. Thanks for the videos. I have learn a lot, even if our enviroments are quite different.
Ive been braiding mine for 4 years and keep the top bushy. Its great. I just have a hard time keeping the stems even. Thanks for another wonderful video.
Well that explains why both of mine are doing great from the start, as I am from the Netherlands 😂 It was one of my first plants and for me they are as easy as my sansevierias and zz plants. I actually one water when the soil is dry. I did place them in well draining soil and then only fully water them, let it drain and put it back in its decorative pot. The stems hold a lot of moisture so for me this works for watering and it prevents rootrot.
There is a difference between light and heat. I find windows with blinds are helpful. Morning sun is much better than afternoon sun. Here in the U.S. the summers are brutal, so the right spot inside can be challenging. Thanks for the advice. Keep up the good work.
Just what I needed. Mine was just like yours and then I moved it closer to the window and... 😢. This is northern Spain, and it rains quite a lot so a bit warmer than Sheffield but still not too much. Now I moved it back and seems to be better but I suspect possible rot roots. Just bought my moisture meter although I might change the blocky soil I put back in the day when I had no idea what I was doing whatsoever. We'll see how it thrives or if it totally dies. In any case I have some propagation going on so hopefully I'll be able to keep it. It's a lovely plant. Thanks.
I live in a garden level apartment, so sunlight from windows isn't really an option for me, but my little unbraided chonky-trunk baby money tree was still doing quite well for itself...until my cat figured out how to get to it. She absolutely ravaged its leaves, and as a result it's looking like it just threw itself into a blender...but it's not dead. I've been putting it outside in the late afternoon to give it a boost now that the weather is warmer, so I'm hoping it'll pull through.
@DementedDistraction Hey! My situation is nearly identical. Any luck with your tree? Granted, before my little devils used it as chewing tobacco, I was afraid I had overwatered it (as a reaction to forgetting to water it for like a month. Terrible, I know.) by putting in the bathtub to bottom water it and accidentally leaving there over night. Then I didn’t water it again for nearly another month because it was still damp on the bottom, but once it dried out like 2 inches on the top, I watered it with 6.5 oz of water on top with a little fertilizer mixed in (out of panic again because I had a plant app saying maybe it was UNDERWATERED now), so it might’ve been on the way out based on my over or under attentiveness. 😅 So that might effect what happens to mine, since I also had repot because all the dirt was out. Basically, did your plant survive? Did you do anything special to it?
I live in zone 9b and put my money tree in a south window. I started it more to the west so it would get predominantly morning sun, but the bugger grew straight to the window and blocked it. I went from a 4.99 Whole Foods twig to a 4-5 foot full window shade in 6-8 months. I was amazed because his big brother who moved outside under a east facing canopy completely stalled, but that was kind of the plan.
I have 7 tall pachira aquatica inside my house. All of them have seven leaves in their stalks. This is the best plant vlog I have ever seen. I love this. So funny. "Give it an oxygen tank and a mask?" And catching knats with pot lids😂😂😂😂😂
Had one before and it was gorgeous for about a year. I ended up giving it fertilizer and it slowly died after that. I was told it was due to the rubberband I didn't see around the trunk below dirt level. But I blame that Miracle Gro. It drew in so many gnats though!
I have a 10 ft money tree that grew from a tiny thing probably 10 inches tall, that I found thrown away in the side of the road, in one year under Florida full sun
I just watched this video and must thank you. I thought have I got one of them wired things round mine. Went and looked and the plant had grown round it and it was embedded in the trunks. The stems above the wire had gone really thin and I have never had any real growth. Now taken off and hoping for some improvements. Cheers.
They also love 75% cactus 25% regular soil mix where they live goes through dry periods to flooding periods so what you can do leave a plastic tray under the pot to hold to left over water that will simulate flooding and leave the water the plant will eventually drink it and leave it dry for about a week also or use your moisture meter and do what he said
Beginner plant mama here! I have 3 money tree plants filled with 7 leaves, I only have one baby that’s an 8 leaves! I’m finally able to grow an Alocasia after killing 2 of them lol. Always looking forward for improvements! Love your videos!
Mine is loving its over winter spot in the bathroom window even though it is directly above the heater. It has consistently produced new growth and some of the shoots have six levels instead of five. That might be its permanent spot even when the rest of the plants go back outside for the season.
I just stick mine under a plant light and it's doing well. It does get some light from a window. I'm terrible about remembering to water so the soil dries out completely on a regular basis. Still looks fine. I let the soil sit in a dish of water so it can really saturate when I do water it. And I add a silicon supplement to the liquid fertilizer I use since I heard it makes the plant more resilient.
That's my bubba as you call it. He is much smaller than yours and has been cut lots of times so no more braiding for me either. He is 13 inches tall including the 7 inches of braiding. I love him and this video was cracking. I did it and made the two cuts on my jade and now we will see if all three will grow. Very exciting stuff. My last task for the day is my ficus microcarpa. It's too has a knobby root ball growing out of the earth with the leaves growing from the top. It had three out of place long leave stems growing so I cut them off and planted them in earth like a ficus cutting. Let's see if they will grow! It looks better anyways. Cheerio Rich. Thanks for this video. I had one for a couple of years and it grew too big so I trashed it because I didn’t know how to tame it back and I was tired of seeing all the yellow leaves! 😢 With this great video care I think I’ll try again! Thank you Sir! 😊
I had one for a few years it all died except one piece. That hing on for s while but never grew and eventually died.😢 Ahahaha yes! The bin has made a great comeback Does the bin have an Instagram 🤣😂 I don't know if I want to try again or not, last time I got so sick of looking at it I couldn't wait for it to die. I was so disappointed.thsnks for sharing Mr Sheffield! Thanks for your time, can't wait for the next!
Mine it gets longer and bigger. Now it reach our high ceiling. I bought it like size like yours now it grew like crazy. You are right first I place my MT next to our sliding door then it grew crazy and healthy now I moved farther from the sliding door cause it is to high it doesn’t fit there it will teach the ceiling. Now I observed it some of the stem getting or dying and some more leaves going yellow but I can’t move close to sliding door no more.
Our money tree is thriving! It's even doing better than the plant next to it! However the money not effecting our pockets because that still depletes! The tree is growing wonderfully though! It reaches the ceiling! Lottery numbers come out straight only when they aren't played. As long as they are played the draw snakes around the numbers. 😑 Ours started off as a tiny piece of another plant and now it has grown so beautifully into its own plant! I have a spray bottle for also spraying the leaves with water but it was already doing good before I started doing that. It use to be on top of the fridge but it took off growing so we had to move it to in front of the living room window next to our other plant.
Another great video! I live in the Southeastern US and keep mine in a west facing window and it seems to be pretty happy. Your tree is beautiful and I’m hoping mine looks like that in the future. Do you repot yours once a year? What type of soil mix do you use? How long did it take to grow to that size? Thanks again for the great content. This is my number one houseplant channel 🍃🌱🌿
First time I hear to keep their soil moist. mine is very happy and constantly growing with me letting it dry out completely in between watering. BUT it has a quite big pot (I didn´t know better when I repottet), I test as far as my chopstick can reach but not sure how dry the very bottom get´s. I probably water about every 2-4 weeks, depending on the temperature. It does get a lot of light though, it´s in prime position together with my monstera deliciosa.
I also only water every 2-4 weeks when the soil is completely dry, I treat it the same as my zz plants and get new leaves all the time it's doing great
I was waiting to see if he would trim the roots and replace soil when he checked for root rot. I also would have liked some guidance as to what size pot for whatever sized plant. It seemed as though the pot used was rather small and with the loose, light soil, would tend to flip over.
After killing 2 of these, I finally watched this video, and have the courage to try again. ( Turns out, I was doing EVERYTHING wrong🤦🏼♀️) I bought Mr. Sheffield’s moisture meter, and am ready to try again. I feel lucky🍀
My money tree always looked great outside in the shade for the summer and then it would droop, throw out a bunch of yellow leaves and act like it was about to die when I had to bring it inside for the winter. Believe it or not, it has done the best I’ve ever seen since living in a self watering pot. Yes, I know, that’s blasphemy but my money tree seems to enjoy that pot!
Hi Mr Sheffield, I love your channel and your content, you’re very entertaining and fun to watch and listen to! Hey, I’ve got a 4 year old old money tree about the size of yours. What’s been going on with mine is she’s got these clear sticky droplets on most of the leaves stems. No pests and no other issues, and googling isn’t giving me any help. The only thing I need to do and will do tomorrow is take it out of its same pot it’s been in and add all fresh soil. The sticky droplets aren’t bothering me unless I accidentally brush my arm up against it, even that’s not a big deal. Can you give me some advice about this? Thanks in advance!✌🏻 I’ve got another question … I’ve actually got 2 of these and they’re both growing beautifully except on each I’ve got 1 branch that’s naked for about 12” above the soil line, after that, lots of leaves. I’d like to snip it off and root the top, if I’m lucky to root it I’ll pick another 2 branches between my 2 plants, root those as well and then plant all 3 in the same pot, braid them, then gaining another money tree. Now, will the lower part of the branch that will remain in the soil grow a bunch of new leaves from where I cut it? I think it might, but I’d like reassurance. Again, thank you!
@@SheffieldMadePlantsyes, that’s what I was hoping for, thanks! Now, I’m still wondering what you have to say about the clear sticky droplets that are all along many the stems? It’s been doing this for about a year now. Thank you!
Thank you for this plant info. I enjoy your post so much! Did you ever try to grow a Bird of Paradise? I live in the NE US and have one that is struggling.
Bought my money tree at Lowes on their clearance table for $10. It was already about 2-3 feet tall but 4 branches were cut for whatever reason and the others seemed fine. I placed it in my kitchen about 2 feet from a window and it was not happy - dropped every last leaf in protest! I thought all hope was lost but decided to place it on my front steps outdoors and within one week it started sprouting all over! I am in upstate NY and it is now July so it seems to thrive with the humidity and 2-3 hours of morning sun. It rained last night so I worried the soil may now be too moist - I will keep checking with my moisture meter and keep my fingers crossed but shouldn't the money tree be able to tolerate outdoor rain as long as the pot has adequate draining holes ?
Thanks , yet not doing codes ! I have been able to keep mines for 5 years . Did replant after watching another plant lover on Tik Tok his instructions were clear , simple and not costly! Do understand I love your detailed information a lot !!!
I’ve had a money tree for around 6 years. It’s never grown and is now down to only one trunk. Summer time I take it outside and it does well, but the indoors during the winter and over/under watering… I’d like to get another one and do better with it
i’ve got the most traumatic plant story from one of these. took it home, found it had fungus gnats. quarantined it out of my room, my cat started going ham on the leaves. moved it somewhere the cat couldn’t reach….. it falls on top of my ALREADY BROKEN AND SUFFERING TOE and pieces of pot were literally shanked into the hard floor. it’s trying it’s best, but we’re struggling a bit 😭
RIP to his brother that died from being milked for 3 months, he will be remembered. I was expecting that other plant (forgot its name) that fell victim to soy sauce. I was sad when you mentioned in your tour video of 2023. But I was surprised when you mentioned that your money tree with milk had also died. It was looking much better than the soy sauce plant. I know it had no roots left basically, but wow, I guess that milk has long term effects.
We have skylights and mine is growing like wildfire! So it gets lots of sunshine, mostly indirect, and I swear I can hear it growing. It seems to require more water than all my other plants. I don’t want it to get any taller though so I’m trying to figure out how to prune it back!
you should probably remove, or at least loosen, that tie. you can see that the wood is bulging around it. also the plant should stay together without the tie.
Mine struggles. I did have a successful propagation. But even it has stem turn yellow and fall off. Regularly. 😢. I have mine in the bathroom south facing filtered light ( we have a film over the window. It did perk up and now back to loosing leaves again. So in short trying out your advice. At least I haven’t killed them. Yet
I just bought one but mine is a miniature 10 inches there arent that many videos out there for smaller ones. (One of the roots is shedding and feels super wet)
I recently re-poted my Money Tree. I put two coffee filters at the bottom in hope the soil doesn't seep through. I also mixed some water beads with the soil. Is that ok? 🤔

I just bought mine for the first time today ..thats why I am here ... hoping I can grow my money tree well🙏 I love plant
woohoo, what a coincidence, I just got myself a huge moneytree yesterday! was meaning to see if you did a video on them and here we are!
Perfect!
If mine got even slightly too dry, leaves would turn yellow and die. So for a few years, I’ve had it in a self-watering pot, and it LOVES it!
Also, I do braid mine. There’s a video on RUclips in which someone shows how her 10-year-old money tree looks, and it turns out that the stems really need the support of being braided together.

money trees are the most resilient houseplant imo. I have two large ones and they have been easy to care for😄
Get the basics right and it's not too bad
Thanks for this video. I had one for a couple of years and it grew too big so I trashed it because I didn’t know how to tame it back and I was tired of seeing all the yellow leaves! 😢
With this great video care I think I’ll try again!
Thank you Sir! 😊
My pleasure 😊
Wow I had this plant ALL WRONG! Poor thing 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you so much for such an informative video.
You bet!
I looked up money tree flowers: Wow! I wonder if they ever grow on houseplants, or just in the wild.
I'd imagine it's tough to get them indoors
I had one for a few years it all died except one piece. That hing on for s while but never grew and eventually died.😢 Ahahaha yes! The bin has made a great comeback
Does the bin have an Instagram 🤣😂 I don't know if I want to try again or not, last time I got so sick of looking at it I couldn't wait for it to die. I was so disappointed.thsnks for sharing Mr Sheffield! Thanks for your time, can't wait for the next!
Could be worth another shot
I use a chunky mix from sybotanica. Probably not every year though. Just when it’s rootbound.
I always enjoy your videos!
Thanks!
Entertaining … and spot on advice too.
Thanks!
I also only water every 2-4 weeks when the soil is completely dry, I treat it the same as my zz plants and get new leaves all the time it's doing great
I heard the money tree loves to "see" the sky. I get great late afternoon sun where he has full view of the sky.
I have mine with a tank and oxygen mask on direct sunlight near the radiator all year and it thrives! 🤘🏻
Happy as Harry was it?
Larry!
I have one leaf left. Helllp, mr Sheffield
I was waiting to see if he would trim the roots and replace soil when he checked for root rot.
I also would have liked some guidance as to what size pot for whatever sized plant.
It seemed as though the pot used was rather small and with the loose, light soil, would tend to flip over.
Awesome video. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you 😊
That's beautiful! I haven't seen one that big! Is that the one that was on the floor on the other side of the room?
It's been moved round a lot. Usually on the floor though
My money tree wasn't doing well. So I decided to give rain water instead and now it's doing good.
Thank you, great video
Glad you liked it!
After killing 2 of these, I finally watched this video, and have the courage to try again.
( Turns out, I was doing EVERYTHING wrong🤦🏼♀️)
I bought Mr. Sheffield’s moisture meter, and am ready to try again.
I feel lucky🍀
Fingers crossed 🤞
❤ thank you! ❤️
Nice to know your knowledge
My money tree always looked great outside in the shade for the summer and then it would droop, throw out a bunch of yellow leaves and act like it was about to die when I had to bring it inside for the winter. Believe it or not, it has done the best I’ve ever seen since living in a self watering pot. Yes, I know, that’s blasphemy but my money tree seems to enjoy that pot!
Not much wrong with those pots in my book
Thanks in advance!✌🏻
I’ve got another question … I’ve actually got 2 of these and they’re both growing beautifully except on each I’ve got 1 branch that’s naked for about 12” above the soil line, after that, lots of leaves.
It’ll grow a new stem(s) yes
@@SheffieldMadePlantsyes, that’s what I was hoping for, thanks!
Now, I’m still wondering what you have to say about the clear sticky droplets that are all along many the stems? It’s been doing this for about a year now. Thank you!
Thank you for this plant info. I enjoy your post so much! Did you ever try to grow a Bird of Paradise? I live in the NE US and have one that is struggling.
I've never had that plant actually, Maybe one day
Bought my money tree at Lowes on their clearance table for $10.
Yeah should be fine
Thanks , yet not doing codes ! I have been able to keep mines for 5 years . Did replant after watching another plant lover on Tik Tok his instructions were clear , simple and not costly! Do understand I love your detailed information a lot !!!
I’ve had a money tree for around 6 years. It’s never grown and is now down to only one trunk. Summer time I take it outside and it does well, but the indoors during the winter and over/under watering… I’d like to get another one and do better with it
You’ve got this ✊
i’ve got the most traumatic plant story from one of these. took it home, found it had fungus gnats. quarantined it out of my room, my cat started going ham on the leaves. moved it somewhere the cat couldn’t reach….. it falls on top of my ALREADY BROKEN AND SUFFERING TOE and pieces of pot were literally shanked into the hard floor. it’s trying it’s best, but we’re struggling a bit 😭
😳
awesome video! I was wondering: would you cover the soil with some light mulch (hay), to keep it moist for longer?
Yes you can!
He went to a better place 🙏
Your vid really comes at the right time!! I love my money tree, but the leafs are starting to yellow and fall off😔
You’ve got this ✊
Mine is too! I've had mine 3 yrs, it's done beautifully... until this winter. I hope you're able to save yours!
We have skylights and mine is growing like wildfire! So it gets lots of sunshine, mostly indirect, and I swear I can hear it growing. It seems to require more water than all my other plants. I don’t want it to get any taller though so I’m trying to figure out how to prune it back!
Sounds lush
What is that picture when you say 'Brought up in the Netherlands or something'. 😂
When will the money bills be fully grown and ready to be picked?
Funny, that would make us all smile!
Hello, Do you what the slime on the leaves are? It´s clear at the end of the leaves (the thin branch) sometimes on and very sticky - pest maybe?
Sounds like it could be
you should probably remove, or at least loosen, that tie. you can see that the wood is bulging around it. also the plant should stay together without the tie.
Good shout thanks
Mine struggles. I did have a successful propagation. But even it has stem turn yellow and fall off. Regularly. 😢. I have mine in the bathroom south facing filtered light ( we have a film over the window. It did perk up and now back to loosing leaves again. So in short trying out your advice. At least I haven’t killed them. Yet
Fingers crossed 🤞
I just bought one but mine is a miniature 10 inches there arent that many videos out there for smaller ones. (One of the roots is shedding and feels super wet)
I recently re-poted my Money Tree. I put two coffee filters at the bottom in hope the soil doesn't seep through. I also mixed some water beads with the soil. Is that ok? 🤔
Should be fine
@@SheffieldMadePlants Thanks much for your prompt reply. Hugs 🤗
