And 28 years later Lex Luthor is still obsessed with LAND! Every time I hear that word I think of this speech about so much money over a great real estate swindle
How Lex Luthor deduced the existence of Kryptonite (In Superman The Movie) and its effect on Superman is kind of like inspector Clouseau solving any case....unlikely.
Yup, and he got a hell of alot of press out of it too, and top billing in 1 and 2. Still, Hackman doesn't know how to give a bad performance, even if he wanted too.
Superman: I'm going to stop you! Lex: No, I'm going to drown you in my pool. But don't worry. I'm giving your Fortress to Otis. We'll call it "Otisburg'.
Lex Luthor: Mrs. Tessmacher, when I was 6 yrs old, my father said to me.... Mrs. Tessmacher: Get out. Is it wrong I find that part funny? lol I could picture that, so to speak.
I wouldn't say he didn't give a damn about it, he more or less saw it as an exercise to see if he can do something worth while with a principally comical role... and low and behold he made the character a lot more charming and menacing than anyone else could. He just simply didn't have a lot riding on either 1 or 2. Hackman seemed genuinely positive about the experience of making the movie in the retrospective documentary on the film's making.
This is the best Lex, except maybe for Lex from All-Star Superman. Pure ego, pure genius, pure evil. Hackman's performance is great. "Doesn't it give you kind of a shudder of electrity through you to be in the same room with me?"
I wouldn't say he didn't give a damn about it, but he sure as hell didn't amerse himself in it like other actors... He obviously never read the comics, but it wouldn't matter at the time anyway b/c his Lex was a new breed. After Hackman, Lex became more stylish, cool, and badass... So in a way, Hackman gave birth to a whole new generation of Luthor... The man will always be Lex for me. But I think Michael Rosenbaum is the definitive adaptation.
Oh that guy's boring ! 'this' is the Lex that i know: a comedic yet sinister man who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted, and Hackman portrayed that brilliantly.
He is bald. This incarnation chooses to wear a wig to conceal his baldness (reality is Gene Hackman was a pretty big name in the 1970s so he couldn't shave his head because as soon as this shoot ended he'd have another project to go off to. Remember: This is the first bid budget Hollywood comic book movie. To even get big name actors at all in what was considered a "Children's story" was impressive)
Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor was the first villain I ever liked as a kid. I sort of rooted for him too. Such a shame they re-used this same plot yet again in Superman Returns, and Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor has a nearly identical speech about land. Boo.
@WeylandYutaniInc91 - i know that, i know lex luthor couldn't have cared less about his slaphead which is why he pulls his wig off right at the end of the film.
You can see various toupees in a few scenes, plus it's obvious Luthor is a dandy. It's also the late '70s, probably the worst time in history to be a bald man when everyone else had thick, long hair and sideburns.
In my opinion Michael Rosenbaum played the best on screen Lex. Gene is good but I feel like he is too much of a comic relief to really portray the evil genius Lex. Spacey is basically a springboard of Gene but he does it well. If we are to put best Lex luthor in terms of voicing it would hands down be Clancy Brown. Also this is MY OPINION.
The Lex Luthor of the superman movies is just a greedy, cartoonish, one-dimensional, evil villain. I much prefer the Lex Luthor of the WB animated series and the Justice League. A tyrannical genius businessman who justified everything he did for the greater good...his vision of the greater good, driven by jealousy for superman's power and god-like status which he could never attain.
This quote has stayed with me for nearly 50 years!
lex luthor scenes are so well written, for me it has become like a classic play
"What more can anyone ask?" Hackman's reaction is priceless!
He's always been and always will be my favorite villain he's played. :D
That is probably the greatest stock investing advice that anybody could ever have
And 28 years later Lex Luthor is still obsessed with LAND! Every time I hear that word I think of this speech about so much money over a great real estate swindle
best superman movie ever.
I'm not a fan of Lex Luthor, but what he says about real estate is so true.
I like how his father was mentioned even only once in the movie.
How Lex Luthor deduced the existence of Kryptonite (In Superman The Movie) and its effect on Superman is kind of like inspector Clouseau solving any case....unlikely.
yup i just saw this on tv... and had to look it up and hear it all again...
If there was a Lex Luthor movie I would see it
lu-thor

"A few miserable rooms off a common elevator"? LOL...what a snob.
You took the words 'right' outta my mouth. :D

Eisenberg: study this and study it HARD and learn
I don't care about what people say about the joker being the best superhero villian. Lex Luthor is the BEST villian.
Lex Luther is the best capcom hero in the history of the world
SO TOTALLY TRUE!!! And therefore if I ever get the chance i'm gunna buy up a whole bunch of land i know about!
This is the best Lex, except maybe for Lex from All-Star Superman. Pure ego, pure genius, pure evil. Hackman's performance is great. "Doesn't it give you kind of a shudder of electrity through you to be in the same room with me?"
SOOO much better than Kevin Spacey
0:08 - :29 The apple doesn't fall far from the tree here.
Turns out there are lots of people, whole countries even who want respect, and they'll pay through the nose to get it.
Lex Knew and it’s still true
Lex Luthor from Superman I and II was great. IV ehh it was still Gene Hackman trying.
Lexi!
I wouldn't say he didn't give a damn about it, but he sure as hell didn't amerse himself in it like other actors...

Luthor's apartment is the shit.
You can see how infuriated he gets when the same thought crosses his mind at it does with that idiot Otis.
WROOOONG!!
Hackman - Best Luthor ever
Oh well allright then, but i have never seen the orginal, but im going to someday :)
gene hackman made the lex luthor character his own although kevin spacey's attempt is a good one.
Valerie Perrine, what a knockout.
He is bald. Well, when the IRS catch up with Lex. I wouldn´t want to be Miss Teschmacker or Otus when he finds out the bill.
lol.
Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor was the first villain I ever liked as a kid. I sort of rooted for him too.
Such a shame they re-used this same plot yet again in Superman Returns, and Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor has a nearly identical speech about land. Boo.
@aewd1980 Are you kidding? LEX LUTHOR NEVER WORE A RUG!!! Lex was proud of his baldness!!!
Otisburg?
Ah, gee Mister Luther.
It's a little bitty place...
@WeylandYutaniInc91 - i know that, i know lex luthor couldn't have cared less about his slaphead which is why he pulls his wig off right at the end of the film.
MS TESSMACHER!!!!!!
Did you see the movie?
Have you even seen the film?
You can see various toupees in a few scenes, plus it's obvious Luthor is a dandy. It's also the late '70s, probably the worst time in history to be a bald man when everyone else had thick, long hair and sideburns.
I like Lex Luthor better with hair
He came back to do SupermanIV only because Salkind, the Producer was mistreating Richard Donner, the Director and Hackman didn't like it.
What more could anyone ask. lol OTISBERGE. LOL.
Truer words?
as his name suggest. Hackman pry's me open
Donald Trump and Mike Pence! Pence needs to start being referred to as Otis
In my opinion Michael Rosenbaum played the best on screen Lex. Gene is good but I feel like he is too much of a comic relief to really portray the evil genius Lex. Gene Hickman as Donald Trump
Good, he'll make awesome super weapons to give us an edge on ayy lmaos.
@ArtemisFlyingV Lol, sneeky bastards 8P
one thing is wrong, he is not bold and thats a FAIL imo
lex luthor is hillary clinton……..
foxman362 Donald trump is lex luthor
I don't know. Clancy Brown did a pretty good lex luthor.
The Lex Luthor of the superman movies is just a greedy, cartoonish, one-dimensional, evil villain. I much prefer the Lex Luthor of the WB animated series and the Justice League. people are no damn good
Hackman's Luthor is very fitting and great, but Spacey's is a bad imitation.
Worst Lex Luthor ever -_-
