Beatty and Hackman got along so well on the set that I heard they worked out many of these slapstick scenes themselves. "Hard to believe that brain can exert enough energy to keep those legs moving!"
Richard Donner said that years later, he was signing into a hotel and someone came up behind him and said, "Hard to believe that brain can exert enough energy to keep that pen moving..." and it was Hackman.
It says a lot about Lex that he keeps the disastrous Otis employed even though he destroys his plan as often as superman. Where Lex in BVS kills Mercy for no reason whatsoever when one safely assumes she’s a better assistant than Otis. This Lex clearly has a heart of gold.
Why, you ask? Why does the phone always ring when you're in the bathtub? Why does the most diabolical leader of our time surround himself with total nincompoops? There are unanswerable questions, they are just how the universe works.
Donnerverse Lex is less overtly sinister. Though in the Extended TV Cut (which is basically Donner’s assembly cut of all usable footage timed to the full Williams soundtrack), Lex tries to kill Miss Tessmacher at the end by feeding her to his ‘babies’ (some sort of wild big cats he keeps in a pit, referenced earlier in another deleted scene).
Lex had a lackey named Otis in Superman and Lois. He was an inmate at Stryker's named Otis Grisham who beat up Lex when said villain, during his time in prison, tried to recruit him as a henchman for a measly $5. (Otis was asking for $20,000.) Lex did not forget that humiliation and had the warden send his guards to beat up Otis. (Lex had blackmailed the warden by sending some guys to hold his family hostage.) After that, Otis was forced to become Lex's sidekick (and occasional chair.) ruclips.net/video/3YrXaUplkzo/видео.html
Such a great funny character. Both really gave the film some gravitas and love the sarcastic wit, definitely has the Mankiewicz flavour and those who are familiar with his writing will immediately tell.
“Are we going to Addis Abbaba, Mr. Luthor?” had the energy of a kid learning the class is going to Greece after the teacher says “Now, class, it’s neat seeing the Parthenon in our Greek Mythology textbook. But imagine seeing it in person!” And the kid says “Yeah, that would be awesome! Wait, are we going to Athens, Greece, Mr. Luthor!” Also, I love how Otis pronounces it “Mister Luthowah!”
Thanks for posting. I could have watched an entire sequel with this Hackman and Beatty duo. You left out one great clip. " Otis, it's not that I don't trust you but...well... I don't trust you."
Ned was brilliant in this role. He only had like maybe 10 minutes total time on screen in this movie but made you laugh and like him big time. Best Superman movie ever by the way!
Richard Donner was checking into a hotel years later and Hackman came up behind him and said, "It's amazing that brain can generate enough power to keep that pen moving."
Even in Superman IV ‘The Quest for Peace’ 😖 Ned Beatty and Gene Hackman are still worth watching just for the way they play off each other, Although I really can’t recommend that particular Superman movie for anything else honestly.
Hope Mr Luthor and Ms Tessmacher are doing alright. Lord knows reality would be shifting if they were near. Then you wrestling with your own sanity while they walk around calmly. Our temporary headquarters was Wards Island.Even Ms Tessmacher pretended she was a man to sneak in. My cousin the Apostle did time in Manhattan Psych next door. We had everybody tripping off God and Jesus' powers.
Farewell Ned, you were a tremendous actor.
This film could be watched in the year 2078 and still generate the same pleasure and emotions as back in 1978 when it was first released.
RIP Ned Beatty brilliant in Network, homicide life on the street and of course the Best Superman movies.
Maximum respect.✊🏻
I'm always reminded of Gene Hackman's line of Ned Beatty from Superman: "I'm amazed that brain provides enough power to move those legs" (paraphrase).
Best line ever lmao
Ned and Gene had great comedic chemistry in this. RIP
Gene's still alive at 91
Otis didn’t live to see his dreams of Otisburg. Rest in heaven Otis.
There's an Otisburg in Batman Arkham Knight. I hope he was aware of it.
Heaven doesn't exist...
But keep lying to yourself.
We've lost another great one, and I grieve...rest in peace, 'Otis'...
1:00 I love how Luthor is horrified at the thought of he and Otis actually being on the same wavelength even for two seconds 😆
That lamp still cracks me up lolll
I love how the blind man has trained his dog to know when someone is stealing from him
Especially Otis 😂
dog was ready to go after him too
Luthor: ......Otisburg?
Otis:...it's a little bitty place...
Luthor:...... Otisburg?
Who's with me on Kick-starting the founding of OTISBURG?!?!🤣🤣🤣
R.i.P. Ned Beatty! He's one of the best funny actors ans always be loved and missed. You always be Otis in Superman the movie.
The best cast for the Superman series. Gene Hackman and Ned Beatty we’re perfect for these roles !! 👌🏻
I wonder if Ned and Gene were close in real life
@@kristinadospoy7347 I read that they did become good friends on the set.
This movie has BREATHTAKING Production Design.
John Barry did this one right after Star Wars. He got sick and died about a year after the release.
Right before the "long arm" scene, Hackman says one of my favorite lines: "It's not that I don't trust you, but... I don't trust you..."
YES!
Why, you ask?
Why does the phone always ring when you're in the bathtub?

Goodbye dear Ned!! At least you will see once more Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder and Jackie Cooper up up and away.
May Ned Beatty rest in heaven.
Thank you so much sir for sharing your talent with us.
The superhero movies nowadays could use some lighthearted comic relief like this.
Mcu is nothing but comic relief to the point you can’t take it serious

When Lex is watching Otis in the subway , his comment about Otis' brain had me cracking up .
Gene has great timing !
Richard Donner was checking into a hotel years later and Hackman came up behind him and said, "It's amazing that brain can generate enough power to keep that pen moving."

Otis is the only one who Luthor is serious and abusive towards.
Beatty is a GREAT physical actor! Like Chris Farley

The original.
