Chorus:
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Oh, listen to my heart break every time she runs away
Oh, listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

Bruce Hornsby is a musical legend but sadly he's one of the most underrated singers from '80s
I really agree, he's really fantastic!! One of the best ever!!
Thumb up
Couldn’t agree more!
You are right
What an Amazing singer and songwriter
Old?? Bruce are you kidding me this song is a masterpiece!
Thank you.
And just keeps getting better!❤🥰❤️
If the drummer mouthed "Hi Mom" at 1:41 then that is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a RUclips video
Amazing video! This song is dedicated to everyone who lost a loved one. ruclips.net/video/JSbGGiSe3S8/видео.html
He did 😊
he probably didn't, but rather said something to one of his co-players
@@kindnessasgreatasthesea1158 I found out later (my original post was from 3 years ago) that his mother was indeed in the front row of this concert. It seems likely that he was saying "Hi Mom" to her.
.💖😃
Still one of my favorites after all these years....
Mine too !

I was 6 years old in 1987. My girlfriend was born in 1987. We will be married soon. This song has echoed through my head for days at a time for the last 33 years. Im sure that, like everyone else, it touches me in just a certain way, a little different than the next listener. This song is a masterpiece. This rendition is emotion inspiring. I am so fortunate that this was recorded and distributed. Thank you, Bruce, and the Fine Men you play with.
Beautiful, young man!
Love this ❤
Your parents raised ya right. 🙏🏼
My daughter was born in 1987......I was 23 then..... And my eldest brother introduced me to the likes of Mr. ( Sir ) Hornsby and J. Browne. Thank God......
You better tie the knot then......Sound advice to someone who's here
Sonny Emory is one of the finest drummers out there, his touch, feel and abilities are something else 👏👌👌
His sense of rhythm is unmatched. Live forever you are a legend
Good point. He's a little early with his vocals which makes the song swing and feel so groovy.
In case we forget, miracles do happen. (Thanks Bruce, for all the gifts you've given us.)
❤ Awesome comment!
I was just a boy when this song came out. I didn't understand anything about life, but somehow I understood this song. It has played inside of me my whole life as the most beautiful song ever. Thank you, Bruce.
This song will never get old. My favorite of all time, period.
AMAZING! Bruce, I have been a committed fan from the late 80's. This "Jam" gave me chill's. So great to access to you. I will never forget at a concert at Wente Brothers Winery in Livermore Cal. I stood up from my chair to grab something and you thought I was trying to get your attention. Lucky me, you asked if I wanted you to play something, I asked for Swan Song in which you replied, "it's been a while", and you played it. Thank you for doing what you do. It's been so amazing to watch your growth and diversity over the years. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Great man, great music, loads of fantasric memories!!
Much love from Kenya.Who is listening with me from Africa
South Africa!
I'm listening across borders. Peace and love
This is such a great performance. Note how he quickly signs the drummer to take up some creative space over the ostinato at 5:45 and they immediately understand eachother.
I agree with all said thank you Bruce and Band your definitely a big part of my life tyou
Bruce & Sonny seemed to have great on-stage relationship- inspiring each other musically & also joking around.
That glance @5:57! 😍
Those lucky people that got to see this live
Brings me back to my childhood memories.....how simple life was!!
This song came up in a random playlist I had on yesterday morning while waking into work. It straight away took me back to a place as a young teenager .. That was so simple, yet so happy and this song and it's sound was like a comfort blanket
When the time comes and went to my eternal sleep, I will really miss music like this.
that sums me up perfectly. stick around many years NN.
In the meantime; you could Whittle some tiny Mandolin's, for your soon-to-be Maggot friends.
Love this man so underrated
What a song
Christ, there's so much groove in the last 3 minutes of this song. Love it

I love this arrangement for Mandolin Rain. Absolutely beautiful 😊
improvising live like any good jazzer. The band is used to it. expects it. You play a tune thousands of times you wanna leader who can do that.
Tom Walker: thank you. And the band is digging it. Free reign. (And I learned that he originally wrote it in a minor key but recomposed it in this major key because he didn't think it would get the same airplay in a minor key. I heard it in the minor and it's haunting. Brilliant! Never heard of that before.)
I saw someone else post that idea elsewhere but as far as I know it's not true. The minor version came from a collaboration with Ricky Skaggs in the 90s.

@@psalmer5690 interesting...I have seen him play the way it is in a minor tonality and I'm pretty sure that was an in-the-moment kind of thing
I listen to this song repeatedly.
Another brilliant live track by Bruce and his gang! The drummer is the double of Eddie Murphy!! WOW xx
Isn’t that so true how underrated he was he is definitely a legend I’m 56 and grew up in the 80’s and I listen to him on here all the time
Same.
His song The Show Goes On, done for the movie backdraft, is probably one of my favorites right next to this one. I also have Across the River as my top three songs from Bruce.
Oh wait! I forgot Every Little Kiss! .....umm.... and ----------😊
Nuh uh, this will never be ''old'' Sir. You've been an integral part of our lives for so long, it brings back thousands of memories, but will never be old. Listening to the different versions over time is always a new experience💗
My favorite song ever!!!! Can listen to it over and over. On best album ever 💕💕💕
Used to listen to this song in 1994 from my late brother music collection, it brings back beautiful memories we had together
Saw him in the summer of 2019 in Dillon, Colorado at an outdoor amphitheatre beside a lake. He played this for the encore as it started to lightly rain. How does it get better than that? I knew in that moment I had to write a song about it. It’s called 1986 (or how Bruce Hornsby saved the 80’s)
This version will ALWAYS be my fav!

Once in a life time certain Soul's come together creating an unspeakable idea that will last in our mind's FOREVER! truly.....This is how I still fell after many yrs. have come n gone since I first heard this amazing piece of music! As Artist's we acknowledge Something far greater moves through us!
I think there are some things that are meant 2 lift us into places beyond word's - I guess we could call it Creative Grace, I've seen It in a sunset even in the birth of my own children - Its a thing that Satisfy us deeper than any material thing could!
Thanks for reuploading this masterpiece Bruce! This piece is pure art and this exact version is my personal favourite. From the way you did the choruses here to the incredibly groovy mandolin solo and the wild and genius outro with the full band, everything about this works perfectly!
bruce hornsby: one of the many G.O.A.T. singers of the 1980's. he became a top tier singer when there was a lot of stiff competition. like: steve perry, lou gramm, dennis deyoung, etc.
❤ Reminds me of being broke and homeless 2022-2023. Got me through the tough times, when I was not feeling too strong.
It's still 2023 :(. Are you in a home now?

Best live version I've heard of this song! Thank you!
Thank you Bruce For taking time
For. Putting it in this set. I’m 72
Also I’m 74 what a set love this man
That drummer...WOW!
I LOVE Bruce Horsnby!!! But I am jealous...I WANT THIS RHYTHYM SECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When she turns to go again, we've all been there, takes me back to that raw emotion, beautiful song, session musicians unbelievable on this track - love songs that convey a story
Brings back so many happy memories
I do enjoy Bruce's jazz inclinations, however the album version of this song will remain as my favourite song of all time. It has an epic quality to it, but this version is so smooth and full of beautiful rhythm.
@ I suppose ya gotta change up the song a bit over time so you don't get sick of playing it
The man is pure magic - I can't get enough of him!
mandolin rain and way it is, listening still. stay safe, lockeddown.

LOVE LOVE LOVE- saw you in Charlotte years ago! My Swedish immigrant grandma (mormor) played the mandolin. (self taught) and when I hear this, I think of her. love love Thank you!
Magic. Pure magic. Thanks Bruce ( & company!!! ).
I love the signature voice and piano in his songs, this song is especially my favorite it moves my soul, and the drummer here did an exceptional job too 👌
This is my favorite Bruce Hornsby song.
Bruce Hornsby is not underrated in this house. He is outasight. His whole band at this gig is, too. Partial to the drummer's work. Really a groove. No expert, so I don't know his name, but I will find it. Hey, if you like Hornsby go back 30-40 years and revisit HARRY CHAPIN (Better Place To Be). A great one, died obscenely young. Hornsby without bluesyness, but great songs. Hits, etc.
THAAAAANNNKKKSS YOUUUU FOR MARVELOUS SONGGG!!!
LOVE YOU FROM YOUR BEGINING!!!! FROM ARGENTINAAAA!!!🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!!
I love that he features the mandolin for the solo!
中学生の時、人生初めて買ったアルバムがブルースホーンズビーさんの The Way It Is
レコードで買ったけどしばらくしてCDがメインになって、CDで買いなおしたり(^^♪
思い出の曲たちです、今でも大好きです
That outro is basically a bunch of heavies stretching out and having fun. Awesome, I could have taken another 10 minutes of that.
Absolutely stunningly beautiful!🙂
My all time favourite song.
Another Legend..... Mr B H and his great musicians
Fantastic !!! Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
I wish you come to Ireland one day to play for us.
Such a spectacular version.
What an amazing performance!
Bruce tu música ha cambiado mi vida! Te admiro muchísimo
I've always loved your music so much Bruce thank you so much!!!!! I'm crying so hard!
Jazz, country and much more. He gotz soul in his blood. God Bless him..,
Bruce is just fantastic.
I met him At further fest , 1996. Such a nice dude. Just standing next to myself and beloved sister vibing before we even noticed .
Saw him in Vancouver way back when! Kevin Costner was in the crowd. Epic music!
These Guys defintelive have fun👍 Great to see
Pure perfection! Magic....just magic
携帯の着信メロディにするくらい好き。
とても美しく、ドラマティック。
When the music takes over...as many thoughts as I could type, the one most repeating is... "Man, I need to go practice."
My favorite song ever! I finding this is amazing! It takes me back when I was a teenager. I watched the official video over and over on VH1!
❤ Cool!
Truly magnificent
This song has a special meaning to us all… that one person that “turns to go” once again
Is there any drummer better than this guy?
John Bonham
Nope
@@jpacific I said drummer, not a rock and roller.
man sonny emory, n^1!
The best song ever!
Wonderful band
That´s relly good guys, a true musicians.

This is amazing
Bruce, you are a legend.Ti ho scoperto da poco,e adesso non posso fare a meno di ascoltarti tutti i giorni.
Hey, that song may be a "really old one"........(first album).......but it still is one of his BEST!!! Got to see him on Halloween Night, 31 Oct 1993, and they had little slips of paper to put on the stage for requests. THIS SONG was my request!!! It's a sad, romantic, and BEAUTIFUL SONG!!!
Just fantastic.
Would have loved to have been there for this concert!
Sonny Emory on skins
Truer words were never spoken May Kala. This man is an amazing artist. I still revel in his songs and superb style of piano playing.
Bruce was very unique. He didn't discriminate. If you played, your in regardless of race, height etc. He sang for the right reason because he loves music and performing. That's what it's all about. Come tour the West Coast Seattle area
Absolute bliss this 💕
Fantastic arrangement!!! Simply beautiful ☆
Honestly I didn't know Eddie Murphy played the drums.... love this song it's so 🔥🔥
Bring in all the clarinets and violins you want...it's just not as good as the original.
It's called improvisation
Bruce was hell of a B baller also...his Son's inc. Also did the soundtrack for "Backdraft" movie w/ Kurt Russell. Amazing talent!
Sad song drifting low ❤
