There are thousands upon thousands of artists out there. Several hundred really, really good ones. Bruce has not had a hit in, what, 30 some odd years. Just stop, everyone loves Bruce when they are reminded by hearing one of songs. Can you say "underrated" without actually saying "underrated"? Pfffftttt
Tasty/melodic authority on the piano. So intentional, that to a non-piano player like me he sounds markedly different from everyone else I’ve heard. He’s so awesome.
My sister’s company managed Bruce for several years. I got to meet him once and he fist bumped me when I went shake his hand. He looked at me and said “gotta protect the hands. You might be stronger than me.” We both laughed. Weeks later my dad passed away. My sisters and I each got a beautiful, hand written card from him and his wife! As good a man as musician!
Bruce always seemed like a top man. I’ve no idea how he managed to express this simply through his music, he just seemed a great guy and I’m glad he was so sweet to you in a moment of distress.
Yep. Bruce (along with his brother John) also wrote Jacob's Ladder that Huey Lewis had a hit with. I think he gave to Huey as a thank you for discovering him.
@@dustinjones8887 Both Bruce and Huey have a version of Jacob’s Ladder. I think Bruce’s is on Scenes from the Southside album and Huey’s is on the Fore album.
The thing I notice about this song is that he doesn't say "watch the rain", or "watch my tears"; he says "listen to the mandolin rain", and "listen to my tears roll down my face". Normally you don't hear things like mandolins in the rain, or the sound of tears. All of the feelings and emotions in the song are explained by the sounds of music, and specific instruments. "Listen to the banjo wind's sad song driftin' low..." A man of music using the language he knows best to let his pain out for the loss of his love. My, oh my...what a way to express something that is so very hard to express.
“Every Little Kiss” is the third hit from Bruce’s first album. “Valley Road” and “Look Out Any Window “ are from his second album. Bruce also wrote the #1 Huey Lewis and the News hit “Jacob’s Ladder”. Don Henley sings lead and Bruce play piano on “ The End of the Innocence “.
This song always makes me cry. Many years ago before my husband and I got married, we were going through some intense times. I went out of town to my parents’ home near the lake to clear my head. My husband showed up a few days later and we reconciled. He took me to dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant on the lakefront. We sat on the patio and the piano player played this song. I’ll never forget it. Years later, we’re still going strong, married and in love. Now we live on a beautiful island on the coast.
I'm from the VA/NC "Lake Country" referenced in this song. In fact, there's a picture of Bruce holding my newborn second cousin at my aunt's house. This is the Virginia sound--country, pop, bluegrass, and jazz all swirled into one... In case you didn't know, the red fruit shown in the video are pomegranates, a common fruit used as a Christmas decoration in Virginia. I was 19 when this song was released, but it represents my whole life. Love you guys!
Bruce Hornsby, my all time favorite person in the whole of Rock and Roll. Seen him live many times with The Range and the Grateful Dead, and he's just a great human being.
I took a University 101 course. It was to aid freshman to adjust to university life. I didn't want to take it, but my parents made me. I chose the 1 day a week one-every Wednesday 5-8 PM. As fate would have it, Halloween happened to fall on that day! A week earlier, a classmate told our instructor Mr. Pruitt he would be missing class. He said, "I'm going to the Dead Halloween show P.rofessor asked, "Where are your seats? He said, "In the nosebleeds" Mr. Pruitt replied, "That's a shame! What am I going to do with your ticket along with the rest of these on row 2? The guy yelled, "DUDE, YOU ARE THE COOLEST!😂😂 The show was awesome! We all dress in costumes much like those in attendance! Years later I bought the CD you're referring to. I'm a huge Hornsby fan. As well as a Grateful Dead one. As a jazz person I got it also because I think Branford Marsalis played on it as well.
An old friend of mine went to see him in the late 1980s and said it was one of the best shows he's ever seen, by any artist playing any kind of music. I've always hated I never got to see one of his live shows. Bet it was incredible.
"runnin down by the lakeshore, she did love the sound of the summer storm, It played on the lake like a mandolin..... I think this is one of the most beautiful bridges I have heard!
If you have heard I Can’t Make You Love Me sung by Bonnie Raitt, you have heard the EXQUISITE piano accompaniment by Hornsby. His piano outro to the song is achingly beautiful.
This is actually the third time you've reacted to a Bruce Hornsby performance. Besides "That's Just the Way It is," you also reacted to a video of "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt that featured Bruce on piano.
Beautiful song. Everytime I hear this it reminds me of my Dad in such a good way. Check End of the Innocence, and Don Henley Boys of Summer, same feel.
Since everyone may not know, Bruce Hornsby co-wrote and performed piano on Don's End of the Innocence. The music track to The Boys of Summer was written by Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers, but Tom Petty rejected it. Don turned it into a classic! Two of my favorite songs! Both so nostalgic.
LOVE Bruce Hornsby and the Range! That whole album is excellent. Another big hit off that album is "Every Little Kiss" I've seen him twice in concert the past 10 years. Still rocking it!
The piano…this song is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes. I’ve always loved the piano, and Bruce makes it sing. One of my absolute favorite songs by him. Amazing music.
Mandolin Rain revisited for the umpteenth time! This Bruce hit gets me all worked up with s Joy,sadness in equal measure; reminiscing, pining for a long lost love? An anodyne on a cold, rainy day in my little corner of the world!
I don't give comments often. But I really enjoy you guys. I pray for your continued success and happiness. Wish the world had more wonderful souls, as you.
I am one of your older viewers (56) and I had this album back in the 80's. I just loved it! The title song gave an excellent social message. This song still hits me hard because I had just gone through a hard break up when this song was on the radio. From the same album, try "Every Little Kiss". It is an upbeat song that was a solid hit for the band.
Mandolin Rain is my favorite Bruce Hornsby song, and one of my top favorite songs when it released in the mid-80’s. I can’t believe I was only 24 back then! Time sure flies, but hearing this song again takes me right back there again! I’m glad you guys loved the song! Thank you for reacting to it. I love your channel!
Severely underrated artists whose well-respected in the music industry. I'm a bit late but I'm glad I found this reaction cuz I love all of your reactions!!💯
Nailed it, y'all's. From this side, it's heartening to see good people appreciating great music and celebrating the musicians. As i return to the song, I'm struck by the seemingly effortless rhyming which is much, much harder to achieve without sounding artificial. He nailed that part. Such an artist, right?
Yes! He/they are so awesome!💖 In the last year my husband and I were heading to a concert and a song came on the radio and I said to him "Google the pianist. It has to be Bruce Hornsby." I was right!
The first time I heard of Bruce Hornsby it was with the Grateful dead (he was their keyboard player from 90 until 92)I felt in love with his singing and and playing and with his song like the way it is (another you should check) he’s just a genius. Go RAPTORS!! #WeTheNorth
I have probably watched a couple hundred of your videos at this point. While many of these songs have been in my life for decades, it feels like I'm hearing them for the first time again through your eyes. The authenticity with which you absorb the music and genuine fun you have doing what you do is infectious. I find myself coming to RUclips and rewatching your reaction videos rather than the original. Thank you so much for what you do.
I am so stoked that you all have discovered Bruce Hornsby. He is such a phenomenal pianist and singer. If you haven’t checked it out already, another place you can hear Bruce play, though not sing is on Don Henley’s (formerly of the Eagles) steller song “The End of Innocence”. Bruce co-wrote, and co-produced this song with Don, though Don sang it. It is a haunting song with extremely meaningful lyrics that ring as true today as they did back in 1989 when the song was originally released. I am a Gen-Xer (NOT a Baby Boomer). And there is something about the End of Innocence including Bruce’s piano that gave voice to the angst, anxiety, and anger that many of us were feeling then, and still feel now.
Such a great artist with so many good songs "Jacobs Ladder", "White Wheeled Limosine", "On the Western Skyline", "Rainbows Cadilac", "Spider Fingers", "The Valley Road"....
God it takes me right back to 1986/1987. God I miss the 1980s so much. No computerized instruments. Actual piano and instruments recorded in the studio. There will never be another times like the 70s-90s
More than one of us listened to this until it wore down so much that it got eaten up. Time to clear it out of the player and go buy another copy. Happened far too many times to too many of my favorite albums
He's very well respected among other musicians.... but does not get enough respect and love from the general public. He's an amazing and true artist.
He was a guest member of the Grateful Dead for several years also.
Agreed!!!!
I be totally agree. I’ve never heard a bad song from him.😊

I always loved how prominent the piano is in Hornsby’s music. Front and center. He’s such a talent.
Tasty/melodic authority on the piano. So intentional, that to a non-piano player like me he sounds markedly different from everyone else I’ve heard. He’s so awesome.
most amazing piano ive ever heard pure emotion
Why the past tense? Did Bruce die recently?
His piano is unmistakable!
Just this week learned that one for guitar. A fantastic tune.
My sister’s company managed Bruce for several years. I got to meet him once and he fist bumped me when I went shake his hand. He looked at me and said “gotta protect the hands. You might be stronger than me.” We both laughed.

Wow, thank you for sharing! That really reveals the man's character.
Bruce always seemed like a top man. I’ve no idea how he managed to express this simply through his music, he just seemed a great guy and I’m glad he was so sweet to you in a moment of distress.
Haha, Bruce may not be a strong man, but I’d wager his finger and grip strength are probably excellent lol.
Bruce had a prominent piano role on Don Henley's "The End of the Innocence". He also co-wrote the song. Check it out.
Mr. Henley will block it, but it's a great song.

This entire album is a Grammy winning masterpiece. Filled me with joy the first time I heard it in full
Absolutely love this entire album, Bruce Hornsby and the Range
"The Way It Is". Cheers
Yes!
my fave bruce hornsby song
His piano, live with Bonnie Raitt, I Can’t Make You Love Me, is beautiful! She nails it, and the piano is fantastic.
Oh yes, I love the two of them together
Yes! They complimented each other.
He plays on quite a few of her songs doesn't he?
Believe it is him on the album version as well.
Bonni of course does a great job singing, but He basically makes the song. Love it.
Love the way Amber immediately fell into her “groove” as soon as that piano kicked in!
i love how both of them got into the groove as the first chorus kicked in ! Vibes!!!!!
Imagine having the first two songs from his debut album being ‘The Way It Is’ and ‘Mandolín Rain’? Not too shabby 😊
Followed immediately afterwards with Every Little Kiss.
Couldn’t agree more. True poetry.
My favorite song from him.😌 Next y’all need to do “Every Little Kiss”.
That was my recommendation too. Under appreciated song.
Agreed... And The Valley Road... Great piano solo at the end of that song
