Plus I had to go see Rogue One last night. Which makes me need more of these kits. But for all the work they are to review, the addition to my shelf is soooo worth it. A vicious circle...

I held off on getting the Cassian and Jyn Black Series figures to see how I liked them in the movie. "Good bye money, I hardly knew ya!" sums up my life right now.
Yeah, before the movie I was all "I don't need that other Cassian." Now I NEED that other Cassian.
I ordered 6 of these. 2 Specialists 4 grunts. Love these kits!

Haha, I was just trying to figure out what he carries in all of those boxes and canisters. They have to be health, right?? And it looks like the rest of the month is going to be model crazy. Shoretrooper, K2SO, and 12 inch trooper just hit customs and I still have Kid Buu to build.

I didn't like Rogue One as much as I thought, but the costume and character design was was some of the best in a Star Wars film so far and the Death Trooper was no exception. I haven't purchased a model kit in years, but I'll definitely pick this up! It seems like you really enjoy building these and it's time to give it a shot myself!
The build is half the fun, and then you end up with a great looking action figure. It's win-win.

Great review, I definitely gotta pick up more of the Bandai Star Wars kids, so far I've only gotten Vader, but the build and resulting figure with Bandai is always phenomenal. I also love the Death Troopers' design, them and the TIE pilots are probably the coolest looking Stormtroopers to me.
If you love the Vader kit and the Death Trooper design, this kit is right up your alley.

You really can't. And yeah, it's so awesome when someone sees it in the collection and asks and you tell them you build it. Especially when it blends so seamlessly with the rest.
I'm seeing one in a couple hours I'm glad I haven't had it ruined in any way. the death troopers look sick though and this model kit looks just as good as the rest of them. keep up the great work haha

I got a couple kits because of your vids. A stormtrooper and Vader. I love em. Very satisfying to build and display. I'm going to get one of these. I need a specialist. Looking forward to your Scarif trooper video. I am going to build a captain when I get one of my own. My bs shoretroopers need a proper chain of command.
That's exactly what I have planned for my first Shoretrooper build too, the Captain, for the exact same reason. And I'm glad you're digging the kits, they are a blast.

I bought this one before I saw the video and noticed a lot of the same things however mines balance is a bit off however that could just be me still being a beginner mine also has less of a range of motion but that’s also likely user error still looks amazing!

Loved this kit. My shoretrooper kit shipped the other day, can't wait to see what that's like. I'm curious how what they're going to do with the color variations and how they're applied. Hope it's good because that's my favorite trooper design so far.
You and me both, I love the Shoretrooper design. I've already grabbed two of the Walmart Black Series grunts and the squad leader even knowing I have three model kits coming. They just hit customs with the K-2SO and 12 inch Trooper. C'mon mail!

I was going to order two regular death troopers from the black series and also get the specialist from the 60 dollar three pack, but seeing this video has made me want to get three of these bad boys

As I was expecting that Death Trooper looks amazing, thats what I wanted, a glossy finish on the armor. I also saw a few video review about that 12" Stormtrooper model kit and it looks pretty good. But I'm waiting for my man Robo to make a video review of it ;)
That bad boy just hit customs, should be a week or so. I'm worried about the size of the head but it may be different in person. At least I hope it is.
I know it is a bit late for this, but with Gundam Models people (and me) would either use the left over metallic sticker or metal colour or "Glow in black" paint underneath the clear parts to give them some glow/reflection.

But I saw rogue one and man I loved the Easter eggs was pretty awesome.
I missed a couple of the easter eggs, but all the more reason to go see it again, haha! And that outside shot was a pain today, so cold and windy and with the models being lighter it did not want to stand up at all.

I've never messed with LEDS but there is some space in the head, should be doable.
Hey Robo, quick question. Do these troopers as well as the normal storm trooper have pegs on their feet for 3rd party stands or no? Or are they even necessary due to their light weight? Thanks!
This looks fantastic, really appreciate all the pics, good stuff. I plan on buying one Death Trooper from each company (Bandai model, Black Series, SHF, Mafex), and eventually having a small 4 man squad with varying heights and proportions led by Krennic. Didn't really care too much for any of the main Rebel characters from the film, so I'll probably pass on them. Unless Bandai decides to do a Figuarts Jyn, then I'd just have to get it.
If they keep to the same timetable they seem to have with TFA, we have a while before seeing a Jyn. Who I need. Badly. My problem is I'm going to end up with that Black Series Specialist now because after seeing the movie I need that three pack Cassian. And then I have the MAFEX on pre-order, but we'll see how the Kylo and Rey and Phasma come out. I've managed to skip the SHF troopers so far.
We need a Tarkin.
Can't believe they haven't gotten to Tarkin yet, could've easily been included in a Rogue One wave as he's pretty prominent in the film.
what you can do with the clear green parts is get some shiny silver reflective paint and paint the back of the clear parts silver so that the silver paint reflects light back through the clear part.
And the good thing is, I already know how to get the helmet apart because I already did it once after screwing up, heh.

If anyone wants to build this kit and wants that Visor to stand out more, you can just paint the piece behind it Silver, and that'll make it much more visible.

Great review, thank you. Would putting a little white or silver paint on the underside of the green seethrough visor help to make the green pop more? The green visor on the SH Figuarts looks really nice and stands out well compared to all the black but i too like and enjoy building these kits and am thinking of picking this one up.
I've been told by several people that putting a coat of silver behind it makes it pop nicely. And yeah, love these things, even though I rarely get back to them to add paint. I should do that sometime.

I use latex gloves when dealing with glossy/all white figures. It helps cut down on fingerprints and smudges. Also holy crap R1 was amazing.
I do sometimes but man, what a pain in the ass to do that every time you want to pick it up. But yeah, my own fault. And I know, right? Gah, I need to go again.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to make it out to "the big city" to see my second 3D movie, just to get the full experience.
The Fwoosh if its a movie I really like I'll usually watch it once in 3D to get the spectacle and then again in 2d to catch all the stuff I missed while being distracted by the 3D. Omni IMAX is 2D so that works out perfectly for me.
Looks a LOT better proportioned than the Thin skinny basketball player black series one. The specialist of the black series looks okay because of the gear though.

The piece on the side of the helmet is a flood light I believe. This thing looks amazing and I would love to get a couple, but I hardly get an allowance so maybe I can work a deal out with my parents and earn it for doing really well with school or chores... and we all know that chores suck. lol!

Does anyone know why there are like no light side Star Wars kits. Like Yoda is 1/6. But not any lightsaber heroes for 1/12 inch. I’m trying to make a diarama but can’t.
I'm still fairly new to this model building, but if you were to paint white on the back of the green pieces perhaps they would stand out more? I'm trying to find a way to make it stand out a bit more I guess. Any advice would be nice, thanks!
I have been told to try that by model builders way more advanced than me. Silver was a suggestion too. So you're in good company!

I thought I'd let you know that according to Xavier Lim from Bluefin the Bandai Star Wars model kits are finally going to be officially released in the US starting this month, and they're hoping to get all of the model kits in the US by the end of 2017.
That only included the vehicle kits though, right? Or are the figure kits eventually going to get some love?

are you going to put the decals or are you going to paint them because the mirror looking one it might be a pain to replicate it because it is like the heat of the gun has damaged it
I think paint would look more accurate. I'd probably attempt to do the rainbow look with some pastels.

are you reviewing the shfiguarts k2so, shore trooper and regular death trooper.? Id good byed money on these from my local hobby store which all showed up last Friday.
Jack Luis Naw, I ended up skipping the Figuarts until Han hits. I always find the troopers to be small. And with it being Christmas I found my wallet a little empty.

Are the pieces easily able to be removed from the spru? Or do you need a certain tool?
Look for sidecutters, they are like wire snips but much more precise. It will cut the parts out clean and reduce clean up.
robo...the wrist peg on my ROTJ luke skywalker figuarts has broken...after wondering what to do for a while, I thought I'd ask you. what do you suggest I do?
Gah, I haven't ever had one break, knock on wood. I'm not sure if Bandai does replacements. It may be easier to try to find another ball joint that size and replace it. They should put extras of those in the box like some companies do.

I just use a pair of Tamiya side cutters ,works like a charm.
Fwoosh, is that gap normal between the bottom half and top? Or does it push down all the way?
It kind of gaps but you can crunch forward or back to close in either the front or back, but it doesn't push straight down to close completely all the way around.

It's not noticeable at all unless you are looking directly across that plane and have the two pieces lined up to gap evenly. And if you're doing the specialist the gear covers that gap.
Brian, search ebay for Target Cassian, I see him loose for like $18-$22? I saw the movie last night. Good and bad. Great model kit!

Hey Robo, might be late for something like my comment, but do you know about shoe polish weathering? Just put some on a brush and wet it and just apply strokes on it. It looks awesome and it's really good for trooper weathering.
I've heard of that but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
Oh, and I just have a question for you, are those model kit figures like fragile, or hardly articulated? I'd like to buy one of these but I'm not sure.
I love building these but i also want the sh figuarts ones. How tall is it and will it fit in scale?
How tall is the Figuarts Death Trooper? I don't have it, but if it's like all the other SHF troopers it's shorter than the model and Black Series.

It cost me about $22.50 but with shipping being what it is from overseas lately it ended up around $40.

Didn't realize Target had a three pack.. Guess I'll keep my eyes out for it. I'm still on the fence about grabbing the kits for the Death and the Shore..
I haven't gotten around to building the Shoretrooper yet but the Death Trooper is worth it. And yeah, the Target 3 pack is Cassian, Jyn , and a Death Trooper Specialist. That Cassian is going to make me get it though.
The Fwoosh I found about 4 of the target sets today while I was out. And the fact that cassian has the breakdown sniper, made me buy it. Between that, his better head, and the Trooper, I felt it was worth it. I already have Jyn but I feel like I might be able to do something with her at some point.
Think it's time to get rid of the Deathtrooper SHF I have and upgrade him to this. Does he feel fragile, lack of heft, or probably would crumble into pieces if I hold the figure too hardly?
There is a lack of heft, which is weird at first, but I've never had a problem with durability when it comes to the models.
+Glasses&Mouthplates - This will sound weird, but I've been building these and filling the unessential gaps in each piece with a hard clay as I go. Takes time, but when you're done, the figure is about 3 times heavier and feels more substantial.
Will definitely try that with the Stormtrooper kit I just bought last week! Actually I did wonder about trying those but hearing about how cured epoxy clay being prone to warping and shrinking overtime made me contemplate of using that method. I've also seen builders gluing ball bearings inside the hollow parts of their Gunplas, of course, not that those would fit in these 6inch kit figures.
Oh that's good to know. Yeah, I've been trying regular modelling clay, the hard, grey variety. Supposedly it never actually dries, and it's just innocuous, regular clay so hopefully it won't destroy anything over time, lol. Good luck!

They can, the grips may be a tad smaller but they are the same scale.

Not at all. I have used glue, like on a bolt on C-3PO, but that was more just to keep it in place.
With your opinion on Mafex/ Medicom changing, did you ever pick up the Mafex Kylo Ren?
Kylo hasn't released yet, he's due in January. But I do have him, Rey, Phasma, and the Rogue One Vader on pre-order.

Yeah, the MAFEX usually get delayed a month or two before they are actually released. But I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

You know, I didn't even notice it until I pulled it down to do the comparison. And I think for the Target three pack it's just a harness thrown over this one. I can see them saving on costs but yeah.

I thought about doing a movie review, especially a Star Wars film, but I suck at talking about things that I don't have right in front of me. With movies I'm just all "It was great, ooooooooo, love it!" but with figures they are right in my hand, first impression after opening. I don't know. I'm seeing it again, might watch it and take notes maybe, see if I can come up with something coherent afterwards.

is the death trooper hard to build for a beginner. like putting the decals and stuff on
HAWK HAWKINGTON This actually a good one to start with because you don't really have to put on any of the few decals there are in the kit. The three silver buttons on the shoulder ammo pack can just be a few dabs of paint.

Nope, no painting required here unless you want some weathering.

If nothing else get a good pair of side cutters. bit.ly/2hWGa9M I got that set a couple of years ago and still use them The tweezers and blade are handy too but the side cutters are your new best friend. If you try fingernail clippers or wire cutters you'll end up doing a lot of cleanup where the part meets the sprue. With side cutters you'll get a clean cut and not a lot of mess. Other than that, follow the instructions and make sure not to skip steps. I do that all of the time, really messes with the build, haha.

What type of paints do you use on these? Enamels or acrylics?
I always use acrylics because that's what I've stockpiled over the years customizing regular action figures.
The Fwoosh I bought enamel for my incoming R2-D2. Watching videos I feel like the blue is too bright. Enamel should work fine though right?
Oh yeah, it should. Enamel reacts weird to the softer plastics of action figures, will work fine on the model kit materials.

It took a couple of hours, but that was also with me stopping and filming and rambling. It could be done quicker. And not having any stickers also speeds it along.
Seems like a dumb question but i know nothing about this stuff, but do they require glue???
Nope, the early ones just hold together because of the tightness of the pegholes but later kits actually have a lot of snapping together. I have had to use glue a couple of times like on C-3PO's bolts but it's very very rare and I only did it to keep from losing them.

Hi, Robo, Do you plan on getting the Disney Elite series Premium Star Wars 10 inch scale figures to review? They are almost Hot Toys Quality with great price, around 20-30 bucks.
I don't have a Disney Store close to me, and I just don't have the room for a lot of larger scale figures. I say as I wait for my 12 inch trooper model to come in. I need to kick some kids out of the house...
Believe me those Disney figures are no way near Hot Toys quality, i have seen more detail on a Hot Toys hand than the full Disney figure!!

Naw, it's just following the instructions. This line was the first model kits I ever built and I picked up on it pretty quick.

Naw, once you get over the initial shock of a lot of parts and pieces it goes together pretty easily.
I finally got all the model kits I wanted from SW and I said to my self im done...but they keep releasing movies and new character that I like....the only problem I have is lack of space now.
That's my problem too, along with money. I just had to pack away a lot of Marvel Legends to make room for more Star Wars.
Man I don't know whether to get 2 deathtrooper model kits or the first order heavy gunner from sh figuarts.
The heavy gunner is a tad small if you have a mixed collection. But the model Death Trooper is just right....just sayin', heh.

awww man im sorry to hear that :( Don't let that be the ruin image of bandai model kits though. I've built a ton of bandai gundam model kits and I can assure you bandai makes some of the best model kits around
Justaaan no problem. I really liked the kit. I liked it so much that I bought the Shore trooper one after this build. Just a little hot glue and now its good.
Does this figure need paint because I've never painted a model kit
This one didn't need paint except for the three silver buttons on the shoulder ammo pouch.

You kind of want to get some made for modelling. There are hobby and jewelry and electrical repair ones out there, but the ones made for plastic sprues are the best. And then you'll never need another pair.
Robo do these kits feel cheap once you build them? I just sense that they feel, well.. more like a plastic model than a figure. I could be totally wrong though.
Ummm, errrr, yeah. They do feel like a plastic model. They are hollow and light. It's a surprise picking them up because they look like a retail action figure but don't have the heft, so it's like picking up a papier-mâché boulder. But they are durable. Just because they are thin hollow plastic definitely doesn't mean they fall apart or break.

Definitely give one a try. I can't deny that they "feel" cheap but once you get one in hand and adjust your brain for the weight they really are awesome. The details are amazing and most of the time the articulation is better than your standard action figure.
