- Homemade 500 LED extreme flashlight.
I made this flashlight back in 2008, of course LED technology has much improved over the years.
But it still outputs around 3250 lumens! Around 45 watt of LED power, don't underestimate it, despite his age :)
Sorry for the lack of music or voice over. I never expected this video to go viral, And I cannot update the video to make it better.
I created a new extreme flashlight that will be uploaded soon, a high quality video with 3D animations, music and voiceover.

LOL that was dim as shit , and how much did it cost to make. I'm impressed that you built it but , do you know the problem with it ?? No lens or anything to help magnify all the led's.
exactly, you're correct. They should have got a lens.
TheVideoVolcano i may upload a video of my 100w led so if you wana see some bright led its focused with 2 lens and i should have it done within a week if the rest of the parts arrive. It works still but my battery protection circuit isn't complete.
Yea , up load it here so we can check it out. Thanks
Bryan Resch i definitely will, i am not sure when but i definitely will
Look forward to it. I appreciate seeing people's talents here on RUclips.
That amount of light is insane! I loved it.
I love the fact that this is home made
actualy even better than the torches today .
The funny thing is that technology has progressed to the point that a mainstream single LED can put out more light with a small lithium battery. ;)
That is cool as hell! Great job and don't let the haters get to you. Electronics is a skill.
That is like a portable search light.
I want to buy one of these 50 watt L.E.D.flashlights...WICKED!!.
+4 gauge Then buy a modern cree
Those camera movments are better than Chris browns
Somewhere in space, Alderaan has just been destroyed.
And today, in February 2024, you can buy a pocket-sized LED flashlight that emits 4,000 Lumens, with a single LED, a single battery, and with a two-buttons control.
10 years ago when white leds were high.now you can have the same amount of brightness in a 100 grams flashlight
I would lov to have two of these in my back window at night for tail haters one little click and poof there off in the ditch lmfao
Comparing an LED flashlight to that of a Maglite is like trying to compare a floodlight to a candle. There's no comparison between the two.
I'd love to make this
My home made spot light is about 4 pounds and puts out 2500 lumens and uses my 20 volt lithium battery that my drill takes. And lasts a long time. And is no where near as big as that.
does this fit on my bicycle's handlebar ?
Get ready to fire the death star. Powering up systems 1, 2, and 3.
If you can't hold it like a bazooka I don't want to see it.
Do these 500 LED flashlight sell at store?
mayb. you can build a lens for it then u can focus the lightcone more.
Clever lad.
you are bleeding light out of the sides, by not having a reflective cone over the led lights to direct the light towards one direction.
Oz Ants I agree! like a cylinder of light! Like laser without the light, amp, stim, elecron, radiation. Much is in the the mirror ))
***** he wasnt boasting that his was better or anything he was just stating a noticeable flaw. Chill out bud
***** I am allowed to make an observation
without a internet tough guy like you insulting me,
i truly feel sorry for people like you
***** what is wrong with you??
internet tough guy, speak to people like that in real life, you will get punched in the face
but you won't will you, chicken shit punk, only is aggressive online out of reach
***** Or a flashlight even :) Good job building it but obviously would need to be scaled down so you could use it with one hand. Though I suppose some police/security guards would prefer a two handed model for better "clubbing over the head"ability.
The Finding Bigfoot crew needs that flashlight.
totally agreed C:
that's not a flashlight, that's a fucking batsignal
Just slap some bat signal paper on it and shine to it to the sky!
l am number four (prank)
Mise en ligne le 25 mai 2008 hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't forget this
He's saying that the video (and the technology it features) is 8 years old and today's reliability technology has slid downhill from there.
.
ayy lmao
Thanks for the epilepsy warning, my brothers foaming at the mouth as i type this
what part of "flash" and "light" did you miss?
Anthony Lamanna ***** I see americans dont know what sarcasm is.
赤 火 フェニックス I see you have to assume that we all don't have sarcasm because one person who happened to speak English didn't have sarcasm.
Your busy typing shit when your brother if having a fit....WOW!!
keep it up guys, your tears give me sexual gratification
Man it’s been years since I watched this. Thought I would go back for the hell of it and see how much technology changed. Crazy how a single AA/14500 flashlight with an XPL emitter destroys this thing now. Mind blown
So, this is where I'm at in my life… watching flashlight videos before I go to sleep.
2016: Now we have one that delivers the same power with just 1 diode...
+Trojan Cyanide yup
Yeah. I have a 10W (total power consumption) headlamp that was really cheap. Probably also some permanent retina damage.
+Samuel Mason mine has around 270 lumen with a single node
+WHERE IS MY CHARGERRR!!!???? diode
+Samuel Mason Much more, actually. LEDs have gotten much more efficient in the last 10 years
You're missing one simple thing, that could make that light more concentrated. A mirror around the lens.
Holy shit you're a genius
xbeast133 :D
Damn the comments are really dumb, this was in 2008! This was amazing back then. That is like saying haha look at that commodore 64 my iphone is better
Exactly. Ain't no International Karate on iPhone
Why was it amazing in 2008? LED is not a new technology.
Kerem Deniz Erkişi Led flashlights were not common in 2008, at that time LED replacement bulbs were just coming on the market to be available for the public. If you want to see proof of this you can search this in google " MagLite 2C/2D 4D 3W LED drop-in Technical Review". Now I can get a flashlight with more powerful SINGLE LED and the same or greater brightness than what is shown in this video.
Kerem Deniz Erkişi Adding to my last reply, go to his website in the link in the description and see the answer for "What kind of leds did you use"
lol my 1 inch flashlight does better
HAHAHA
"flashlight"
Naru Kami "lightflash"
"Fleshligh"
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
;D
you guys that are talking bad about this, just look at the upload date than think about how far led tech has come in the last few years...the fact that i'm using LED bulbs in my house and paid less than 5 bucks for them is simply amazing, and they put out a TON of light.....Something that was impossible or very very expensive in 2008.
+Jay Simons Uh... They cost $18.00+ where I live. It's cheaper to set my house on fire plus it's much brighter.
I bought mine at my local hardware store for $3.99 they are only 9w but they compare to a 60w bulb as far as light output and they don't get hot.
led lights have been around for about 10 or 15 years now I'm pretty sure.
The first LEDs were developed in the early 1960s, however, they were low-powered and only produced light in the low, red frequencies of the spectrum. The first high-brightness blue LED was demonstrated by Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Corporation in 1994.
+Jay Simons You did not mention litronix in the 70's.
pretty sure the light on the back of my phone is brighter than that
nemesisnick66 "The light on the back of my phone" You mean the camera flash? How could you not know that?
Mastorus Gaming it also doubles as a flashlight how could you not know that?
+nemesisnick66 kek
true true
+nemesisnick66 ahh, so your single 3528 smd chip is brighter than his 500..got it..I think..?
Sorry but this light is a piece of shit. Looks dim compared to a high end Fenix.
***** This was made 8 years ago of course a newer LED light will be brighter than this.
***** no, for that time it was bright as hell, It just didnt throw too well.
There is a reason flashlights have the reflector and lens.
Igor K You still need the reflector and lens dumb ass. When you have 500 different lenses and no reflector the light will not throw well in _any_ situation.
Learn a little about optics before you start spouting bullshit.
***** maybe he killed her :O
You're a pos. I'd really like to see you do better.
1:15 Missile launch sequence
day time, night time, day time, night time.
good one
Hamzah Ahmed thank you
antienoob you're welcome
Horton.....classic. LOL
Jory Blagden
Turning that shit on is like starting a fucking fighter jet
+OfficeBear IMBACKURMAD Not really. Have you ever seen the startup sequence of an F18?
+Skyler Smith lmao just like starting a top fuel dragster haha
you need to build a parabolic reflective cone to massively amplify and direct scattered light
fr
100% on point. The cone makes a dramatic difference in the performance of any flashlight. As it appears in the video, it's a really well-built... lantern
Bought one for $10 and it is brighter than this.
+Samara Weaving Yeah he forgot to add a reflector to the design so it's nowhere near as bright as it could have been.
Well your 10$ light can maybe make a brighter spot, but im pretty sure that you cant light up with it a whole football field that good :D imagine how bright the spot would be if there were a reflector.... sry bad english :/
juukyll
It would lighten up atleast 75% of a football field.
+Samara Weaving Yeah sure...
+Samara Weaving why the fuck you lying
what a waste of time lol!
Science is never a waste of time. Lots of good ideas are born from ideas that were considered a "waste".
ESP_Guitarist i agree! but this is not science!)))) this is just big flashlight for no purpose)
Meh, I think the guy just wanted to see if it was possible. Most people don't "need" a V8 hemi to just cruise around town, but yet people buy them. Subjectively that could be considered a "waste".
See every hobby ever.
Agree 500%
This would be good, it would make security guards run even slower!
They wouldn't have to run, they would just blind you with it.
BIGlittleman010203 Or use it as a blunt object.
The only thing it is missing clearly is something to reflect and focus the light to where you want it to go instead of out in all directions. That will increase the brightness to extremes.
i bet with focused light you could poke someones organs with that thing.
I wonder how powerful that would make it. I mean, if you could focus it to be thin like a laser, would it burn anything?
Sonari Neiracchen I imagine so, since there are LED lasers
Sonari Neiracchen well...
A definition of laser...
A laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. The term "laser" originated as an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation". A laser differs from other sources of light because it emits light coherently. Spatial coherence allows a laser to be focused to a tight spot, enabling applications like laser cutting and lithography.
See? A laser - Spatial coherence allows a laser to be focused to a tight spot. It is something like concentrated light.
Gnm Software 2012 | Gnmpolicemata What the fuck are you talking about
"Sir, have you been drinking tonight?"
"Well NOW I certainly can't drive!"
Go up to a driver with that and say "license and registrations please"
Oh and don't forget the over sized pencil and notebook :D
The same power output per second as a neutron star, in a single flashlight!
wait really?
dude, that dosent make any sense, he was talking about a star
i get it,
but he said output, wich is the power "exit" and input the power "entrance" like a laptop charging device, it has for example a 250volt input, and a 20 volt output (or something like that i dont remember)
umm, thanks?
Alejandro Escobedo i dont know if this guy really mean it or a troll...
Why don't you attach a keychain to your flashlight?
This old school LED Flashlight is brighter than all these haters futures.
you can tell it has very high Lumens, but very poor candela..
My Mosin makes a bigger flash.
SwaffyX HELL YEAH, MOSIN FTW
coolkid18751 You think that ... until you sit next to an M44 and let it go through a few rounds.
What are candela?
my moobs make a bigger flash
500 LEDs != 500x brighter than 1 LED. It's more like 5x brighter.
It looks cool, but if you're looking for brightness, it's a waste of money to add more light sources, much more wallet+energy efficient to just find brighter light sources.
That's incorrect.
Randy Pandy No it's not.
moeburn
Explain your logic.
what do u suggest ?!
same light like 3 led by some professional brand ...
That's a big fleshlight
hahaha shiiii I'm laughing so hard here
Nice profile pic
Did anyone else get a flashlight ad before they watched this?
I did
I did
Adblock made me forget there were ads on youtube.
Si, that's pretty funny.
I did
ok, now make the same thing with 500 cree leds
2012isRonPaul .l
Good luck heat sinking it. And not all the CREE leds could be at full power. Also what CREE you talking about? xml,xml2,xhp50,xhp70,xhp30,mce,xpl,xplHi,mtg,mtg2 and many more.
xhp70 will be good,HAHA:D Because its 2800 lumens outputting.
Some say that even to this day, you can sometimes see a bright light aimed at the sky on cloudy evenings...
...could it be the ominous Bat-Signal that strikes fear into the hearts of all criminals, perhaps... or just these guys fucking with a flashlight that's about as bright as lightning for infinitely longer than the split-second flash?
Imagine the look on his face , Bruce Wayne rushing to the bat cave to put his gear on roaring down the road in his stig only to find this guy with his torch 😏
Honestly I expected brighter
Kody Hendley me too, it's such a dissapointed result :(
+Sharif Eizlan breh this was 8 years ago
+Luis Bravo (TheNachoMan) 7 years ago... bruh
Simonas TheGamer oh yeah lol I saw another comment say that I guess I got em mixed.... I'm not making excuses
Kody Hendley
He made it in 2008 numnuts,,,,,, not bad!
Considering this was made 10 years ago. I'd say this was and still is, incredible! Good job!
"Sorry for the lack of music or voice over."
So many uploaders put a too-loud, crappy music background over their mumbly narrative, making it even harder to understand. Glad you didn't make that mistake.
.
Word!!!
+geoh7777 agreed, mumbly narrative is annoying as hell.
Make a 500 CREE led flashlight! now that'd be a weapon of mass destruction!
That was not a "bright" idea.
you should have said it was a bright idea. More funny imo.
What a bright idea.
Punz for dayz
Now all we needs to do is weaponise it somehow
Britain did that 7 decades ago. They flashed super, super bright lights off and on in the eyes of the Nazi pilots and the pilots eyes dilated causing them to be temporarily blinded which of course caused some of them to fly straight into the ground.
Back in 2008 we had no sound
Look how far we've come mates.
If someone would make an EXTREME FLESHLIGHT, I would never leave my house!
thank u
And I thought I was a geek for building a homemade video projector. LMAO.
come on jus like blue peter hows it made ...lol
My iPads brighter than that :/
It looks like most people don't realize that this thing was made 8 years ago, around the time where this kind of LEDs, 5mm with integrated lens, were the most common type of "bright" white LED. Sure it looks weak compared to any modern LED and you can get compact flashlight that would outpower this one, but that's the advance in technology - Think about computer You've got 8 years ago and that cheap new laptop can outpower good PC from that time. The advance in technology for LEDs is even more impressive, since 8 years ago expensive LED light bulb would barely work as a night light while now you can get a powerful floodlight for less...
So, it's a mobile lighthouse?
0:50 - No need for an apostrophe for LEDs. It's an initialism so pluralising it doesn't require an apostrophe. Only possessive nouns or possessive plurals require apostrophes!
xD
Pluralising is not a word. The word you may be referring to is "pluralizing." You are not a very good grammar nazi. (SMH)
Demetris Dangerfield It's called British English.
Demetris Dangerfield Grammar Jew, it should be.
and nowadays you can get a 100W LED Chip, a shame :D
and the 100W Led is very brighter and coasts only 6€ hahaha :D
Benedikt Olgun
If someone reading this has got more money than sense, please build the 500 led light with the 100W leds lol :) How bright would a 50 Kilowatt led light be I wonder.
Micky
Or 500 laser diodes lol although that would burn a hole in the moon so maybe not lol
Today we can buy higher watt LEDs and make much brighter things than this, in smaller size. But, here we are seeing something that was created in 2008. At that time this 500 LED extreme flashlight was a real extreme, and first of its kind and this much power. :)) people who watched this video were like, " :O ... where is the schematic??? Can you do a tutorial ?? Are you going to sell it?, please let me buy it!!
Most of them tried to copy, make their own version of the smaller flashlights. :)))
Crikey, 3000 lumens, 10 years on there are finger sized Flashlights kicking out 5000 lumens.
Not very bright by today's standards... some single XM-L's are much brighter. Guess in 2008 it had a lot of cool factor, though.
Well, he didn't have a reflector to focus the beam. If he had it probably would be A LOT brighter. Also he used standard LED's rather then some higher powered ones.
Doug Dale Reflector would just help to increase the throw of the beam (candela) but it won't help to increase the brightness (lumens).
oh yeah
I wonder if you put a lens on the front of it and concentrated the beam would it make a laser like beam...
XD puts it through a prism
"painting with light" as a professional photographer I and others (artists) would be interested in using this type of "light source" for long/multiple exposure photography. also submit this to "make magazine" .
If you are a professional photographer you must know that this lantern is too bright to paint something... You need a low aperture and low iso for long time and a candle...
yes I do. and I have. I was thinking very big. I.e. At 100-500 yards or more for large structures. desert rock formations, entire bridges - it would be a special effect - who knows. In any case great build. PS I used to do lighting design and run follow spots.
Also rule of squares -unfocused light falls off with the square of the distance. so yes, your light could only be used to paint at appropriate long range.
David Luftig For longer distances is better to use a simple green laser... Goes further and have a small center... A lantern have a bigger spot and cannot compete with a laser...
w1p30ut3r There are a lot of photo applications for this kind of light. What I'd be most excited about is indirect illumination. Heck, you could bounce this off a wall in a pitch black room and get so much ambient fill you could work portraits handheld. Landscapes for sure, I'd love to put this baby up on a boom in the forest and work with the trees.
I used to carry whole bags of flash lights into caves and tunnels, but I eventually got sick of all the work. This light would be a lot of fun to try, and with those brightness settings, it looks like a very powerful and flexible tool.
how to play slender
Yes
he can meet giant slender for sure
I'm guessing an "on and off" switch was too mainstream?
Pretty neat! Just imagine how powerful it would be with the new generation of LEDs used in high lumen tactical flashlights, etc.! I'm not even sure if that could be done because I'm not an electronics guy but those LEDs can each produce light about as strong as a car headlight. I know because I just bought a small 950 lumen tactical flashlight that will light things up for hundreds of yards and it fits in the palm of my hand.
What tac flashlight did you get, how much did it cost and what's the battery life like?
AdventureMan (formerly hikerboy16) look at the nitecore p12 is 65 bucks after tax and everything and get a 18650 battery 12 buck (recommend a sony vtc 4 or 5 30 amp) with a intellicharger 15 to 20 i have that setup omg the light is bright. it will sustain 950 lumens for 3 mins then kicks it down to high to save the light
500 cree leds would be like the surface of the sun!
+AdventureMan (formerly hikerboy16) i havent changed my bat for while on lowest 250 hours on high 1h 30nm
7yrs later and i edc 1750lm innovation goes great
jajaja, buenisima!!
Yo igual jajajajaa
pretty cool, should add some kind of lens
Looks more like Nicki Minaj's toy. :p
Omg
Ignetiusjrelly lmao!!!!!!
You can get better performance with a smaller EDC light these days like a Olight or Surefire. Dont see any point in having this
Wtf!? It lit up an entire forest and people are saying they've bought BRIGHTER!?!
Where the hell do you guys live!? Chernobyl!?
Search up "BLF Q8 Flashlight" and you'll see a bright flashlight
Alan wake's flashlight
You can defeat a villain by flash their eyes with that
It' REALLY bright>_
2008: very hard to get a flashlight for 500 lumens
2021: just a light bulb
Put it on your bike and go for a ride!
Cole Nichols RIDE not 3 WEEK GRAND TOUR, I meant it as a fun experiment, not a practical thing to do on a daily basis.
Cole Nichols You're not alone, we both know you wrote that reply for a reason other than stating it was heavy.
+Cole Nichols get pwnd in your own game.
+The Chitty Chatty Commenter lots and lots of crashes all around
Cop: "sir have you been drinking tonight"
Me: "AAAAHHHHHH MYY EYYYEEEESSSSSS!!"
Finally a fleshlight in my size.
My nokia 3310 got better flashlight
I CAN SEE THE FUCK OUTTA EVERYTHING
Add a detachable magnifying glass and you're all good.
Spence7R
adjustable mirroring
beam concentration lense !
Put the moon back : )
Now add a magnifying lens!
put a lens on it
The flashlight on my phone is stronger...
It's not...
Do you know how old this is? It's years old how good were flash lights back then? Idiot
+Ehomeyjr Im just saying. Jesus, you need to calm the fuck down
10yrs later i have a $20 single led that does the same job
Nice build quality.
Amazing how much further led technology has come since this video.
500 LEDs? I think you are little weak in maths
You guys don't get it. Several years ago, LEDs weren't that great back then which is why you had Multi LED Flashlights.
Damn u could fit brighter flashlights than that in your pocket these days, good to see how far we have came
