Good video. Is it possible to include maps of the contested areas in these battles. It would help visualize the strategic importance of these battles. Thanks in advance.

True. But all I do is get my atlas book etc out and do my own research as long as it's said where the incidents happened are in Europe. Sometimes you can just work it out by yourself without information on map's etc. other sites give the whereabouts of incidents using maps but some just don't. Maybe it's just easier not to. I prefer finding things out with just my own research then compare it , it makes it more fun too. I'm a little bit odd but it works for me.
The special landing barges for horses were built for the operation. They and the bicycle troops can be seen in this video. The bicycle troops were needed as a force of fast moving mobile troops was used to quickly cross the islands. This operation shows that the Germans could launch a successful combined operation despite their lack of experience, and this was demonstrated again in Norway in 1940. It shows that Operation Sealion might have worked, or at least that some of the criticisms of that operation aren't valid. OKW was formed as a response to examination of Albion and the need for a joint operations co-ordinating body was recognised. Unfortunately, Hitler chose to use OKW as his secretariat instead.
A map and arrows would have greatly improved this video, as an american i dont have the geo info to undersand the movements or where these islands even are. a map would have helped a lot

Did anyone have an effective amphibious warfare doctrine or specifically adapted vehicles at this time? Certainly not Britain with it's debacle at Gallipoli or the USA with it's isolationist policies.
USA's amphibious warfare doctrine for WWI was simple: "We'll put our troops onto transatlantic crossing ships, land them at allied ports in Europe, disembark the troops, have them kick some Central Powers asses!
@@davymckeown4577 yes and yes. I do understand the actual understood meaning of "amphibious warfare." During WWI, it was absolutely necessary for the U.S. means of deploying of troops into theaters of conflict on foreign soil required the U.S. to deploy troops overseas via transatlantic capable ocean vessels. Basically, the caveat between understood amphibious warfare and semantic amphibious warfare seems to be whether or not the troops being deployed are being deployed directly into battle upon landing or not. All that being said and, hopefully, understood, yes, I was joking.

With proper planning and execution an operation can be successful. It also really helps if your enemy has no more desire to fight back. That being said, I would observe the Soviets taking the islands back during WWII against an enemy that was actively trying to defend the territory is far more impressive.
In late 1944 with the massive manpower/resource advantages they held over a nearly depleted Nazi Germany it was most certainly NOT more impressive. It also isn’t particularly noteworthy from a military strategy standpoint. Schorner withdrew against Hitler’s orders cause he knew defense was both futile and pointless.
@@33moneyball like I said, it really helps if your enemy has no more desire to fight back. And as far as the circumstances surrounding each of the two "captures" (WWI Germany, WWII Soviet,) my observation, admittingly, was based only on the information provided in the video. Therefore, with additional information, perhaps my observation will change. The actual motivation for my comment was based on how much praise of success the German operation is given (in the video specifically) for the takeover of the islands. Yes, the mission was a success, but how can that success be quantified without significant military opposition? As well, can it really be said that the tactics used proved to be successful? If five guys in a rowboat and packing twenty-twos, take over a deserted island, is it safe to say the tactics used by the five guys was "brilliant" (or any other form of praise)? I will give the (WWI) German military credit for the initiative and the execution, as they did not know that the opposition would end up being as light as it was. At any rate, based upon the new provided information of the circumstances, the German takeover may well be the more impressive, as I am now aware. Of course, since that information had yet to be provided to me at any time prior to my comment, my observation was as stated. A favorable/unfavorable observation is dependent upon the position of observer when observing. (Insert cordial emoji here. lol)
Nothing impressive about any soviet victory in 1944 1945. Massive superiority in numbers and supplies and the will to use them and not caring about own losses against an enemy severely overstretched and short of fuel is a sure win.
