I have the same car, except I have the metallic rims which seems to be a rarity from what I am told. I was just at the car wash and the head guy came out and looked it over and talked to me for 5 mins about it. He wanted to know all the details and how it handles and all. It definitely turns heads and since there aren't THAT many of them on the road, it feels nice being in a unique car.

Given what dealers are trying to charge on some more sporty vehicles this is definitely a VERY attractive option in general. It's using the same engine as the GTI just detuned, the ea888 engine is extremely reliable and the 7spd DSG or the 6spd is exactly the same from the Golf GTI and R, for a lot less money. The interior and UI is everything that the Golf R should have been. Hands down, it's just better and cheaper.

I traded in my ‘22 SI for this. Here are some key comparisons:
    Civic SI pros:
Bose Audio - Hands down the best factory sound system I’ve experienced in a car.
Gearbox - Short throws and auto rev match system made the car so easy / fun to drive.
Brake Hold - designated brake hold button perfect for sitting in traffic / drive thru. Car is held every time you come to a full stop and does not disengage until you go to take off again (same with hill start assist). VW lacks the brake hold but even when using hill start assist you have to hold your RPMs steady and wait for the brakes to release for about 1.5 seconds which can be annoying when in heavy traffic areas and you’re trying to peel out quickly.
Interior - the climate control knobs / radio knobs feel nicer and have satisfying clicks. The rear seats have more room than the VW but Honda has far less trunk space.
    Jetta GLI Pros:
Engine - While the Honda feels fast, the VW actually is. The bump in 30 HP and 60 ft lb of torque is very noticeable and i no longer feel like i have to work hard to pass family SUVs / sedans on the interstate.
Digital Dash & infotainment - Customization options are endless with the VW. Performance displays, gesture controls & more to name a few.
Steering Wheel - flat bottom and feels absolutely awesome in your hands. A lot of folks complain about the haptic feedback on the VW wheel but it doesn’t bother me.
Heated Seats - not an option on US Civic SI
At the end of the day, both cars are super fun. I do not regret making the swap to the VW but really enjoyed my time with the Honda ( 1 year 8 months and 40k miles). If you do elect to go with the VW make sure you opt for a manual 🙂

What also needs mentioned is the tunability of VW's. They are de-tuned from factory for emissions and good fuel economy but all it takes is a software flash from one of several big tuning companies and you're up over 300 hp and 350 lb ft of torque. The perfect package if you are in the market for an affordable sedan.

Hmmmm really, is that right, sounds interesting...but I'm still planning on getting a Golf R because I want the AWD, it annoys me that they don't make an AWD GLI when the Audi A3 is basically the same car

    • @TheLumberJacked
      @TheLumberJacked 6 месяцев назад +2

@@alee2128 of course the Golf R is a fantastic pick. Just don’t be surprised if in a roll race you are gapped by a GLI. Suffers a lot less drive line loss but obviously is terrible from a dig.
The fact that you don’t have to tune the Golf R and it’s bloody fast - therefore your warranty stays intact is a huge plus. While I love this engine, if you tune it, expect it will have issues down the road. The cost of a tune on the hardware itself cannot be underestimated nor understated. Anyone who tells you that it won’t affect longevity is lying to you or themselves. But if you are OK with that cost? Then absolutely worth doing it knowing the risks.
I’d go with a Golf R too. It’s a beautiful car and AWD is the goat.

I do not have a sunroof or a heated steering wheel but do have the adaptive dampers. I don’t mind losing out on the luxury features in exchange for a last hooray for the manual VW sedan.

You should look into the A4 Allroad. I just recently ordered a 24 from Audi & its a lil bigger than the Jetta but is almost a 1:1 for size class if you want a GLi wagon. It comes with the 45 engine so 261hp 273lbs torque, 0-60s in low 5s so a good bit quicker stock, AWD Quattro instead of FWD, extremely nice interior quality, big brakes, full pano roof etc. I had a Mk7 GLi & loved it but the interior was so bad, but it was also a $32k car fully loaded. This Allroad remedies everything that was wrong with my GLi but it costs $59k for the Prestige fully loaded trim I ordered but it's absolutely worth it

I don’t understand why they made a limited edition, limited production model and then positioned it at the BOTTOM of model lineup. My son has a 2014 Edition 30 GLI and it was the top trim level, with every available option + HIDs. For some reason they’ve done the exact opposite here and I don’t see the appeal vs. the higher trims.

My wife has a '22 GLI, it's a great car for the money. 2 comments - the gearing is WAY too tall, much taller than the GTI. Why? Gas mileage I presume, where it does absolutely shine. And - the visor test! Every time I ride as a passenger and need to extend that thing, I throw a rant just like you guys, because of the unbelievable cost-cutting move of not allowing ONE visor to extend. I've been thinking about writing the CEO directly to complain loudly about this, it's beyond annoying and absolutely unacceptable. Oh and the infotainment, while newer than unit in my '19 Golf R, is laggy and buggy, and the Beats sound is inferior to the old Fender setup. Other than those nits - fantastic car.
