The Qatari majlis is of great importance to Qataris. It has been known since ancient times to be available to passersby. They also play an important role in enriching social life, making them truly an educational experience, given they never closed their doors in any of the year’s seasons. The majlis also reflect the traditions of the people of Qatar in terms of generous hospitality. There is a summer and winter Majlis, each with their distinguished characteristics, but both meeting the same goal.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will represent an opportunity for football fans to get to know firsthand the Qatari people’s generous hospitality, and visit an important part of the culture, given the Majlis has maintained its traditional look to this day.
In this context, the Qatari society is based on the customs, traditions, values and principles that have been inherited by generations, represented in having a close family, valuing kinship, celebrating family occasions and promoting social belonging and Islamic values. The Qatari Majlis reflects the Arab and Islamic values. It is a place where guests, friends, and family members gather, segregated by gender. Qataris are accustomed to meeting in the Majlis, exchanging visits and being there most of their time. They are keen to accompany their children to councils and attend events, in order to learn customs and traditions and pass them on from generation to generation. It is customary for the people of Qatar to open their doors at all times, especially after the afternoon prayer until after the evening prayer, while staying there throughout this period to receive visits from relatives, friends and guests as well.
The Qatari Majlis is famous for its wonderful design that reflects the Qatari tradition and heritage. The interior design of the Majlis as well maintained its traditional feel, with items like traditional swords among others present inside, which are symbols of pride and courage.
Due to its cultural importance, the Qatari Majlis and Arabian coffee was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. The State of Qatar represented by the Ministry of Culture, along with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, and the United Arab Emirates played a big role in inscribing Arabian coffee and the Majlis on the list.
