    Personally, I replayed The Unicorn Princess about 10 times. Going on walks on the horse really helps clear my head, and the progression to get the horse to a full-on unicorn feels great imo.
    Highly recommend it, thanks for showcasing it Erick!

    RPGs are a major time investment, especially the super-grindy ones. An RPG really has to be outstanding to merit a second playthrough. Probably less than 10 total qualify for me.
    I don't think I'll ever finish Soul Hackers. I like the cyberpunk setting and I got pretty far into it (up to Shemyaza), but it's the SMT1/2 kind of old school grindy, with your demons consuming Magnetite every step you take and requiring a lot of gifts to make them obey your commands. Then you fuse them and you have to re-tame them all over again.

    My list would be opposite. "games i replayed the most".
    Even ones i definitely didn't like with Tokyo mirage sessions get a second playthrough. See if they are truly good or bad as my first time around when i was green
    I usually have a more favorable opinion second time around as i can clear the game quicker or play better.
    Tales of graces hard disagree. It's better as you play with new game plus and being able to beat harder bosses sooner. I even plan for the secret boss with time stop clocks to have cheria spam them while i beat him up. It's awesome

      That is a good idea for a complementary video, yes. I also agree about Tales of Graces. I am not much a a Tales fan but I thought that game was quite enjoyable, and I liked it better than Xillia to be honest.

    • @ivanbluecool
      @ivanbluecool 27 дней назад +1

      @@David_Alvarez77 yeah it feels like people are going extra defending xillia 1 and 2 after that remake video he made. Xillia 1 is a good starting game for new fans but 2 is just actively not fun especially in harder modes
      Graces is very fun and more as you play. Not sure how he can say it's a one and done since the new game plus has more ap to do more combos and new ore to craft better equipment to then make you stronger and better at using all your combos.

      @@ivanbluecool : I had the opposite experience with X2. It was the one I enjoyed playing the most before Arise came out. I still think certain aspects of its systems were kinda weird, it just had some others that cancelled out the issues I had. XD I had a much lower opinion of X1, maybe because I actually played them in reverse order for no particular reason, though the Lillium Orb and Shop Upgrade systems are both things I think they should have kept.

    I rarely ever replay an RPG, as they tend to be massive time investments. The only ones I ever go back to are ones with lots of choice and player agency. Old school BioWare comes to mind (before EA bought them) as does Obsidian games.
    But yeah, rarely do I ever replay a JRPG, they tend to be entirely too linear for a second run IMHO.

    Tales of Graces is one of my favorites, i Know Eric prefers Xilia, but graces F is truly underrated and people trash this game for all the wrong reasons, if you give it a chance and understand the battle mechanics youll be engaged in one of the best action rpg mechanics. I think it is so much better than Abyss it's a shame a lot of people did'nt get to play this game, it needs to be ported for newer consoles and PC, Xillia and Xillia 2 and Abyss along with it

      If they do, I hope they adjust the controls correctly this time. I have no clue why, but the Tales games that started on Wii both lacked the ability to remap controls properly. I have no idea if it's something about how the Wii versions were programmed, but it can be a huge Achilles' heel for any action game if your basic buttons happen to be locked in an awkward mapping. (Or at least put it on Switch where you're allowed to bypass bad controls with the system's config menu.)

    That's why I love RPGs with well-designed post-games. You can go back to it and still experience new and interesting content. Dragon Quest games (at least 7-11) have some of the best post-games. I can't stand RPGs where your last save has to be right before the final boss. New Game plus is such a commitment that I rarely want to go through immediately after finishing a game

      The one thing that I might say in favor of trying the remastered version on modern consoles is that they made the game much less grindy. On PS1, as you probably recall, you had to fight mock practice battles to level your under levelled troops and that was very dull. The remaster does something to keep the level of your troops from falling behind. There is also the time rewind system so that you can go back to big decision points and try the game from there without having to replay the entire game again.

    i know it's an unpopular opinion, but i honestly believe that tales of graces has by far the best combat system in the series. yes, it takes some time to learn, but once you do, you're actually feel like you're in control of what you're doing. and that's... that's something that does not really happen in other tales of games.
    (sorry. sorry. it's also one of my all-time favorite games, so i had to try and defend it, at least a little)

    • @magistered

      It's not an unpopular opinion, there are many who think the battle system in Graces was the best of any Tales game. It's definitely one of the most rewarding in terms of skill.

    • @theoaremevano3227
      @theoaremevano3227 27 дней назад

      I think its issues were more counterintuitive ones than practical ones for the most part. Tales games have a history with not really explaining certain things well at all. If they did re-release it with the effort of getting people off to a better start, I think they'd benefit more from better instruction than changing anything.
      Also, its directional controls can sometimes feel weird depending on the camera angle, because from what I remember, they aren't relative the way most games are. (Or maybe it just felt off on a PS3/4 controller).
      It does easily win best title screen though. It's extremely compelling. Lost art there. :D

  • @HighMesh
    @HighMesh 27 дней назад +2

    Unpopular opinion here. For me it'd have to be Tales of Arise, I absolutely loved the artstyle, the characters and above all the combat. But the amount of unnecessary dialogue... SHEESH! Especially when you reach Lenegis and Daeq Faezol. You barely walk five steps and trigger a cutscene which is followed by three skits, only to take five more steps to trigger another cutscene followed by more skits... I liked the game but the level of exposition is way too much to consider another playthrough

    I think one that is on my list is the new FF7 the latest fight with Sephrioth is just stupid insane. 2 hour boss fight no save points in between, just bad game design. I haven't beaten it the first time but I have no interest in beating it nor do I have 2 hours to spend on 1 boss fight with no save points. Better things to do.

    Tears of Tiara 2 I platinumed it just for the love of that type of games, but I 100% agree it was tedious, and I love Disgaea games, I don't mind well done grinding, but Tears was... off.
    Tales of Graces F, was also a pain in the ass to plat, but I got it since on a "Trophy guide and roadmap" tip it was mentioned to "focus on getting everyone's battle trophies before attempting the platinum"
    I understand why, those things are difficult to get, but give you plenty of playtime with each character and it's mechanics, the martial artist girl was the one for me, broken little monster.

    One thing Tales of Graces suffers from is the use of directional dodging mechanics, which aren't inherently bad, but almost every game that uses them suffers from the same mistake of failing to understand the significance of that design choice.
    So many action games use a contact-based system, where your goal is generally to force a collision between your i-frames and the enemy's attacks, and that generally encourages stepping or rolling THROUGH the incoming attack. Directional dodging has you dodging in opposition to the incoming attack, depending on its angle, typically sidestepping vertical swings and dodging back in response to horizontal ones, which makes it more or less the opposite to contact-based evasion.
    It's entirely counter-intuitive, and the design of the gameplay otherwise closely resembles games that would use a contact-based dodging system, yet games that utilize it tend to gloss over this critical factor, leading to confusing results. They might indirectly mention it, but it really needs to be treated as required learning, testing that the player is actually clear on this point instead of doing it by coincidence without knowing how it's programmed.
    I feel you on the issues with not knowing how to exploit the mechanics either. I felt like in that era, a lot of Tales games had issues with 'fragile' combat systems that were kind of a mess if you didn't know the background systems and how to exploit them, but once you knew, they became too easy to exploit.

    Graces F grew on me a lot. I remember hating it "Why isn't it like the others?!?", but it's a much more complete game than anything since. Xillia's combat may be more to my liking, but it ditched a lot of quirky, fun mechanics (like cooking) for no good reason, and it took until Berseria for them to return, and then Arise to truly return to form. Graces F is really fun, a little more whimsical than usually, but still good. Hard as steel though, Kurt and Emeraude are probably the toughest localized bosses, since the most difficult game of all, the real Destiny 2, will never be released in the west.
