As I approach 50 😢 I've decided to pause my consumption of newer games to go back to some masterpieces like these. I love modern games and sprawling adventures but time is becoming more precious to me.
I know it’s the same intro every time, but it inevitably pulls a tear from me every time. It throws me back to a time in my that was unfiltered carefree joy and bliss. Video games over the weekends and at friends houses. If only I knew how much that time would eventually mean to me.
It definitely did lol. I’m sure most of us spent way longer than 20 hours on our first playthrough as a kid though due to probably getting lost occasionally, spending time figuring out how to recruit everyone, messing around with stuff at the castle, etc.
Those are all very valid points. I just prefer the SNES version as I like playing on a bigger screen and am not that crazy about the extra side content the DS version adds because I feel it messes up the pacing if you choose to 100% it and doesn’t really add anything that interesting in my opinion, whereas in the original the game still feels perfectly paced even when 100%ing. But obviously that stuff is completely optional and can be skipped so really not a big deal at the end of the day. I should have at least brought up that version so that’s my bad!
Why beat Chrono Trigger just once? It's worth playing on both SNES and 3DS. I think SNES is better because the 3DS XL screen is too small to fully appreciate this game, and there isn't that much additional content.
I remember being blown away by Xenogears length, finished around 80 hours on my first playthrough... nowadays thats the standard...maybe even on the shorter side of RPGs. I miss the snes/ps1/2 era where RPGs seemed to be 40ish hours and if you wanted to replay something it wasnt a multiple month commitment.
I have a friend who finishes streaming these 120+ hour jrpgs like the Trails games in 50+ hours by skipping all cutscenes. He just reads the wiki in advance and watches the cutscenes on RUclips.😂
All these years later, the town music from Threads Of Fate still lives in my head rent free for some reason. I never did finish my first playthrough, but I’m sure I got pretty far. I remember the gameover/continue system with the different coins being pretty interesting.
CT and FF6 are hands down my all time favorite JRPG’s! Can’t tell you how many hours of my life I’ve spent playing these two games alone, especially as a young teenager when they first came out!
There was just absolutely nothing remotely like those games when they came out. They were so above every other RPG, they really set a standard and a baseline that holds to this day.

We have such similar taste in games. It's wild. Love the shoutouts to Ark of Napishtim and Threads of Fate. Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter (the game everyone loves to hate) is one that I came to love over the years, especially with how fast it goes once you get the hang of it. Vagrant Story is an acquired taste but also one I regularly revisit for a quick playthrough. I also love that Vagrant Story is one of the only PS1 games I can think of that has its own set of achievements/trophies in the game, like clearing without using magic, opening every single chest in the game, 100% map completion, etc.
I haven’t touched Dragon Quarter in forever tbh, but I feel like I could have more appreciation for it nowadays if I just embraced it for what it is instead of judging it for what it’s not
I just played Soul Blazer and Superstar Saga for the first time within the past two months, and I'm revisiting Chrono Trigger after 5 years right now. Great list with great games!
Great list. Makes me want to play through Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger again. I also always enjoy that you put some highlight onto the music. Soundtracks back in the good old golden days sure hit different.
Parasite Eve was such a great experience. I did feel Aya's running animation was extremely slow (fast forwarded through emulation though). Well worth the time
Yeah I definitely did think of that as she does move pretty damn slow, if it was a really long game it would have been more of a drawback I think but since it’s such a short game it never gets overly annoying to me

Love the idea for this vid, guys! CT is always #1. I will say though; games like Bravely Default 2 or Octopath don't respect my time, but I know it's 'grind to win' so actually pretty chill to play over a long term and I can do handheld in between bigger games.
I remember when Threads of Fate came out. It was touted as "The Summer of RPGs". Legend of Mana and Chrono Cross also came out within months of each other. And GameStop had pre-order goodies like an OST for each game and CC had a neat clock. Unfortunately, I never ended up getting the OST for CC. Yeah... that was a good summer.
Chrono Trigger was my first JRPG and I absolutely loved it. No other title could impress me more than CT... the story, the characters, the multiple endings, the combat system. I recommend playing the snes hack Chrono Trigger Plus.
Same, only sad thing about it was that I would have never guessed in my wildest dreams that it would be the peak of gaming. But it was. 30 years later and I still haven't played a game that has topped it.

Regarding Ys VI: You don't _need_ to use the dash jump to finish the game. You only need it to access an optional item and a secret boss - both in the same area - and neither required to complete the game. Even then, you only need the dash jump at one point (the point Broductions shows in the video). I personally enjoyed my time playing Ys VI more than Oath or Origins. The story's good, too.
Chrono Trigger really is that good. And I agree that despite a few mistranslations (relevant to the story/events), it feels the most charming. The only exception to the time is the rom hack 'Schala Edition' which does change the translation, but does a lot of QoL updates and adds in an entirely new section in 12,000 BC where you save Schala after the Ocean Palace disaster.
Because you mentioned Ys 6 not having fast travel options: It actually does! The thing is, it wasn't availible in the old 2003(?) version of the game and was first added in the PS2 version of it, but it was more limited there in compare to the steam release. So technically, it does save time, but like you lose around 10 minutes if you do it in the PS2 version compared to the PC steam or GOG version of it. (Because one warps you to the entrance of a dungeon or town, the other warps you to all save points in the game no matter how deep they are placed in a dungeon.)
A couple great choices and a couple I've never heard of (but now want to try.) The only glaring omission to me is Golden Sun 1 and 2. Those are the Chrono Trigger sequels we should have had.
Sea of Stars is heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun, and others and can be completed in the 20- 30 hour range. It's definitely a love letter to the genre, but fortunately doesn't feel like you would rather be playing what it is inspired from!
My brother and I played Suikoden 2 first. Then we played Suikoden 1 and we were surprised that we finished it so fast we wer not sure that we finished the game lol. We really love the Suikoden ps1 games so we're excited for the remaster!
Nice, this film is beginning from two of my best experiences with jRPGs. I just love Chrono Trigger and Ys VI. And about rest from video i think that i want to play most of them in the future, especially that they aren't last for dozens of hours. I will gladly watch more about this kind of RPGs and maybe also about second site of medal, RPGs that seems too long than they should.
For me Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and the Digital Devil Saga duology really felt like they hit the ground running and are incredibly tight experiences beginning to end.
I love games, but with my career and family I just can’t spend hours and hours gaming anymore. If I start a game and I know it’s a time sink, I’ll usually stop playing it. So thanks for this video!

Threads of Fate is such a top tier game to me. I've never finished it as it is crazy tough and the stupid platforming sections, but I love the characters, world, and overall gameplay systems. It's a game I keep playing over and over and never getting to the end cause I suck haha. A short rpg that doesn't waste time I would add is Nier Automata. Excluding all the side quests you could likely get through the central story within 20 hrs give or take. I beat the main story and a bunch of side quests within 45hrs so it has a good spread of extras to do. That and I probably got distracted just enjoying the scenery and music.
I'm looking forward to the Suikoden remakes coming out. Never did get to play them on the ps1. And threads of fate looks pretty fun too! Random question, but what's some of the non-coziest games in your opinion? Excited to hear more about Koudelka.
Do you mean non-cozy as in the atmosphere is dark and depressing like Koudelka to use as an example? Or non-cozy just in the way how the game actually plays?

I mean I know you put these 2 games in every video but the lack of Grandia 2 and Breath of Fire 4 hurts my soul 😂 I think being a main game in their respective series they clock out at the 30-40 hour mark in which to me is perfect. Also a fantastic entry to Suikoden 1 with the 5 games having each of their own greatness. I'm also in the same boat that S1 is the most replayable out of all them. I love S2 to my core but every time I have to replay specially with the remaster coming I always have to mentally prepare myself as the game gives you a roller coaster of emotions
Yes, DewPrism (aka Threads Of Fate)! That game doesn't get enough love. Part of the incredible year that gave us Chrono Cross and FF9. Squaresoft was really on to of the world back then, huh?
Superstar Saga is my favourite out of all Mario RPGs! Also, Soul Blazer is pretty unique and really fun too! Can vouch for both of those! Threads of Fate intrigues me, I'll keep it in mind and check it out at some point! As for a couple good RPGs that aren't too long and are pretty fun and well-paced, I'd say Swordcraft Story 1 and 2 on GBA are pretty good picks! With the first game coming in at 20 hours, and the 2nd one being around 25, both have a lovely cast, an engaging story that feels like an action fantasy anime, and really fun gameplay with dungeon crawling, a side-view action battle system, and a weapon crafting system! Also, Dragon Quest IV and V would be good picks too for more traditional RPGs, neither of them is too long, both are very beginner-friendly and also very engaging, with great stories, well developed characters, and everything you do in both games feels meaningful! But I wouldn't be me if I didn't give major shout-outs to the original NES version of Dragon Warrior IV, that's honestly the best NES RPG I've ever played, and still a surprisingly smooth experience, once you get past the very minor hurdle of having to use a command menu to interact with the game's world, it holds up surprisingly well! (But make sure you use the cheat code to enable you to directly control the rest of your party in chapter 5)

Great video. A couple of games that I should definitely look at and give a try or a try again. 😂. If you make another video about this then here is my suggestions: Live a live Golden sun 1(not 2, although it’s recommended after playing the first one) Voice of cards(any of them, highly recommend playing.) listed yet. Maybe: Star ocean 1 and 2 technically(if you just do the main story itself) Basically any Megaman battle network games(as long as you are doing the main story) Kingdom hearts chain of memories(it’s a card game too but it’s got jrpg elements and action) I am sure I am forgetting others but I am only listing what I played that you haven’t you

Stand by DS version of Chrono Trigger being the best way to play. You get the cutscenes, loading times, and best controls.

I just finished jack over after picking it up on sale, and for under $10 & 10hrs it was a good time throwback rpg

I picked up Threads of Fate a few weeks ago at a convention. I really like the PSOne aesthetic in that game.

Suikoden I & II hold the top spot in the series. I honestly can't pick which one I love more. I like Tir over Riou though.

I will gladly watch more about this kind of RPGs and maybe also about second site of medal, RPGs that seems too long than they should.

For me Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and the Digital Devil Saga duology really felt like they hit the ground running and are incredibly tight experiences beginning to end.
Chrono trigger is legit my favorite game ever. I love it. Takes about 16 hours to beat it all
Most games that came out in 5th thru 7th gen respect player time and dedication.
I love games, but with my career and family I just can’t spend hours and hours gaming anymore.
If I start a game and I know it’s a time sink, I’ll usually stop playing it.

God, I adored Threads of Fate when I was a kid.
Threads of Fate is such a top tier game to me. I've never finished it as it is crazy tough and the stupid platforming sections, but I love the characters, world, and overall gameplay systems. It's a game I keep playing over and over and never getting to the end cause I suck haha. A short rpg that doesn't waste time I would add is Nier Automata. Excluding all the side quests you could likely get through the central story within 20 hrs give or take. I beat the main story and a bunch of side quests within 45hrs so it has a good spread of extras to do. That and I probably got distracted just enjoying the scenery and music.
I'm looking forward to the Suikoden remakes coming out. Never did get to play them on the ps1. And threads of fate looks pretty fun too! Random question, but what's some of the non-coziest games in your opinion? Excited to hear more about Koudelka.
Do you mean non-cozy as in the atmosphere is dark and depressing like Koudelka to use as an example? Or non-cozy just in the way how the game actually plays?
@@GamingBroductions that's a good question lol. I was thinking the opposite of whatever you think is cozy, so maybe unsettling? Koudelka would probably fit that.
I mean I know you put these 2 games in every video but the lack of Grandia 2 and Breath of Fire 4 hurts my soul 😂 I think being a main game in their respective series they clock out at the 30-40 hour mark in which to me is perfect.
Also a fantastic entry to Suikoden 1 with the 5 games having each of their own greatness. I'm also in the same boat that S1 is the most replayable out of all them. I love S2 to my core but every time I have to replay specially with the remaster coming I always have to mentally prepare myself as the game gives you a roller coaster of emotions
Yes, DewPrism (aka Threads Of Fate)! That game doesn't get enough love. Part of the incredible year that gave us Chrono Cross and FF9. Squaresoft was really on to of the world back then, huh?

Superstar Saga is my favourite out of all Mario RPGs! Also, Soul Blazer is pretty unique and really fun too! Can vouch for both of those!
Threads of Fate intrigues me, I'll keep it in mind and check it out at some point!
As for a couple good RPGs that aren't too long and are pretty fun and well-paced, I'd say Swordcraft Story 1 and 2 on GBA are pretty good picks! With the first game coming in at 20 hours, and the 2nd one being around 25, both have a lovely cast, an engaging story that feels like an action fantasy anime, and really fun gameplay with dungeon crawling, a side-view action battle system, and a weapon crafting system!
Also, Dragon Quest IV and V would be good picks too for more traditional RPGs, neither of them is too long, both are very beginner-friendly and also very engaging, with great stories, well developed characters, and everything you do in both games feels meaningful!
But I wouldn't be me if I didn't give major shout-outs to the original NES version of Dragon Warrior IV, that's honestly the best NES RPG I've ever played, and still a surprisingly smooth experience, once you get past the very minor hurdle of having to use a command menu to interact with the game's world, it holds up surprisingly well! (But make sure you use the cheat code to enable you to directly control the rest of your party in chapter 5)
I appreciate your optimism on the suikoden remasters, but I doubt we're getting them this year 😭😭😭

Parasite Eve is amazing...I wish they would do a remake of the original like they are doing with FF7.
Ys is series I need to try oneday. Maybe Ys6 can be good choice for a 1st in series.
