JRPGs can often start off strong, but then lose steam as the hours pass. Here are 10 JRPGs that I think lose their edge the further they go on.

I still have a lot of love for Vesperia, but it is true that the party basically doddles around, eventually forms their own guild, doddles around some more, a bit of magical nonsense happens to Estelle, and then it just ends. I didn't feel like I had a firm plotline to hold onto as I played it.
I'm trying to remember... Did they ever explain that crazy guy who was after Yuri?
@Mysticgamer IIRC he was originally working for one of the actual major players of the story and then started obsessing about Yuri and eventually went rogue. In short, no.
Ye I think the lack of strong core is the biggest issue it has
Got a lot of strong elements, especially with Yuri and Raven I feel.
But there just doesn't seem to be a central goal or plot to tie it together in a solid narrative
I played it for the first time a few years ago and overall I enjoyed it. My feeling is that it overstayed it's welcome though. There was a point in the story where it appears that Big Bad has been defeated and all will be well with the world about 30-40 hours in. That's the point where it is revealed that there is another threat to humanity that must be overcome and the game slogs on for another 15 hours. That whole last part of the game should have been cut IMO leaving the adventure at a reasonable 30-40 hours instead of the 50-60 with the last ten hours being tedious and decidedly less fun.
Tales of Destiny is the best Tales Series imho, awesome story, awesome gameplay, fun mini games
Seems that there are two kinds of JRPGS. Ones which start off strong but then overstay their welcome, making the last dozen hours a slog. And those which the fans insist that "It starts to get good after the first 30 hours".
Why JRPGs should start aiming for the 40hr mark instead of the 100hr mark. Both of those kind’s would be improved. Don’t overstay as long if at all, and get good after an hour instead of 30
@@drowningin Persona 4 took so long to actually get going, that 3 hours in I legitimately thought I was playing a visual novel game and not a turn-based RPG.
I do wonder what number would be a more reasonable replacement for that 30 in a long form (say 70+ hour for definiteness) game. It's not 2. I'm not even convinced it's 5.
Then there is the question of how good it is in the earlier stage. Going from 4/10 to 9/10 after 30 hours is very different from going from 7/10 to 9/10 in the same time.
Vesperia had Judith, man. JUDITH!
right to the point lol
@@champ8364right to the plot, to be more precise.
Yeah, 'plot' doesn't save it.
I like how Judith and Yuri get along really well. Their dynamic is one of my favorites in the game, second only to Yuri's relationship with Flynn. It's because she has a similar mindset to him: to do the major things that need to be done herself, and to take the less serious things less seriously.
Oh Judith ...... ❤❤❤❤ 😂
You putting Keeping Up Appearance clips made me smile. Love that show.
Such a gem! We got lucky with comedy in Britain.
I wouldn’t change Xenogears’ second disc at all.
Having the characters give soliloquies is the perfect way to get a lot of story across in a fast way. And even better is that you get to hear how Fei and Elly really feel about what’s going on and each other.
Plus it’s not like the first disc doesn’t give you a ton of RPG gameplay to enjoy.
I liked xenogears better in disc 2.
Second disc is great. The first disc showed me things I hadn't seen before in games, and then the second disc did it again - showed me things I didn't see in other games, or even on the first disc.
Half of me agrees with you. There’s something poetic about Lacan and Takahashi both never getting to finish their art.
holy cope 😂
@@eproductions5115 fr lol. People literally ok with a half finished game. There's a reason people beg for a remake.
Oh, and for all the RPG fans in this channel, which is one of the best on RUclips imo, I wanted to recommend Eternights. This game was recommended to me by Kiseku Nut on one of his videos, and I just finished it this week... this is a fantastic short RPG, with lovable characters, fun gameplay, cool atmosphere, an interesting story and an intense ending. Every RPG fan should play Eternights.
Eternights is a great game
@@johnciano3524 It is. I went down the Min road, with Yuna beign my second best.
Agreed. Finished it recently myself and it catches you by surprise with just how good it is.
Having played Star Ocean 2… I absolutely agree with the villain critique. Also, this is more a me thing, but…
3.7 BILLION years? Really? Like… how? How does a civilization last that long without any significant change? And why are they all so okay with dying at the end?
I LOVE Star Ocean 2 from back in the day (Can't afford the remake) and I gotta be honest...the villains draw close to a blank from me. They are definitely not memorable. I think I remember what they were trying to do, but the story definitely isn't the reason I love the game haha.
I also feel like it went downhill in general once you get to Nede. The first planet was the best part other than like the labrynth and other post-story content.
The timeline is of course silly. Honestly, even Tolkein's timelines bug me because of how nothing develops for thousands and thousands of years which feels really silly, there was no reason to make things that comically old and long. I mean, ok, there is a reason, he wanted the world to be massive and hugely unexplored with endless stories not being told but the problem is that...ok, this is getting completely off-topic, sorry. Point is, if thousands of years of rule is silly, billions of years is even worse.
The villains are most definitely the weakest part of the game. Otherwise, the game is my favorite in the series.
@@Tinil0 funny enough, I am writing a fantasy series that begins in 1349 where humanity has colonized several planets for the last nine hundred years, and it’s still medieval. I think it can work because 1. Travel to other worlds does not rely on spacecraft in this universe 2. They still HAVE advanced since they began, and 3. Setting up kingdoms on other planets probably limits your technological GROWTH.
They have different metals though
@@FlyingFocsDon't listen to these clowns. Do your thing and know far more people would enjoy fantastical things and stories than Clowns looking to hate great and imaginative new ideas
A cool thing about DQ11's Act 3 is that it's pretty much a craft your own act segment. I found it pretty satisfying to try and do everything, because there are a lot of cool story moments just scattered around the world. However doing that _will_ net you the longest act in the game. _But_ if you just want the main story and be over with the game while still getting the true ending, you can just finish it. Most of Act 3 is optional so you can just get the mandatory bits and be done with it if you want. That will get you by far the shortest act in the game. And there's everything in between.
Of course if anyone doesn't like Act 3 because of the implication then they're probably better off skipping it as mentioned.
Agreed! I really liked Act 3, but it gets some real hate in an otherwise flawless game.
I actually thought act 3 is what made DQ11 great! I didn’t see that twist coming and was pleasantly surprised about that
Vesperia is great but you made a mistake, brother. Like my boy Derek from the “Super Derek” show says “Hype responsibly”. You were irresponsible lol. You know I LOVE your channel and content and even though I don’t agree with you with Vesperia I respect your opinion. We still have Trails and Y’s in common so we’re still good lol
Trust me, Vesperia taught me to never take hype at face value anymore. It's helped!
I’m just busting your balls, brother. I learned the lesson to “hype responsibly” when I tried playing Radiata Stories. I know I’m in the minority but I didn’t enjoy that game and I’m sure that over hyping played a huge role in that so that’s when I learned that lesson.
VERY HARD disagree with you on Xenogears, 'cuz while yes the 2nd disc was indeed a rush job, it still never diminished an amazing sci-fi story that is equal parts Mobile Suit Gundam and Dune and not to mention the gameplay is still quite good.
Not for me. They set up something legendary in Disc 1, but it was so rushed in Disc 2 that I can't give it a pass. I know if a modern RPG did this despite having the same reasons, it would be crucified.
.hack. I really love this series, but both series have rather frustrating last games to them.
Part 4 Quarantine has hands down the best story moments in the series for me and is a great payoff for the buildup of the previous 3 games. Wrapping up one of the most tragic character arcs in the series by defeating one of your party members who turned out to be a boss in disguise, the epic final fight with Cubia, and while the final boss is a bit underwhelming it's such a good conclusion to the series.
Unfortunately in order to get through all that you've got to do a ton of virus core grinding, there's a literal brick wall of 48 of them right before the final dungeon, and if you weren't preparing through the other games you're in for quite the slog to collect those. Heck even if you prepared it still requires you get a lot of cores from this game specifically which just sucks. The normal enemies also get way more annoying to deal with as well, and the long post game dungeon being completely luck based due to infection rate is frustrating.
G.U. Vol 3 Redemption on the other hand is just dull. G.U. should have ended with Vol 2, but they just keep going. Vol 3 can be split into 4 parts. The tournament arc, the final fight with the bad guy, the out of nowhere final boss fight with Cubia, and the Forest of Pain. The tournament arc is the worst one out of the 3 games, but I guess Sakaki is kind of fun being the cackling villain for it. The final fight with the bad guy is the best part of the game and is a great payoff for the story.
The final boss being Cubia kind of makes sense if you played the first 4 games, but he literally comes out of nowhere and feels like this random giant monster you've got to beat at the end of this story. The Forest of Pain is just a really long and boring 100 floor post game dungeon. I think I'll take Quarantine's shorter more luck based post game dungeon than this.
I'll just add that Link which is the last main game of the series is complete garbage gameplay wise. While I like the fanservice and story it wasn't worth the 60+ hour slog through that game.
Truth. I didnt even do the bonus dungeon where you save mia at the end of 4, i was just so over it lol
@@hyperkaiju9721 I've done it enough to know the quirks of it, but it's not a fun dungeon to do at all. Especially since the infection rate only goes down if you land the last physical blow on an enemy. The Peacock enemies in that dungeon have absurdly high evasion to the point that you can do multiple multi strike attacks on them and not land a hit even with an accuracy buff.
I think the reward is worth it since I really like Mia, but I completely understand noping out of doing that dungeon.
Tales of the Abyss needs a remake. Like some of the best character writing in an RPG imo and the plot is so ambitious and interesting and could use some more expansion especially the ending.
KH 3 made two massive story mistakes. The first is that Sora didn’t need to do anything in the first half of the game to reobtain his powers from KH3D. The second was retconning Xehanorts end goal and letting him literally getting away with it.
I will give it kudos for concluding the BBS and Days trio’s plot. That was a tear jerker.
And they made Sora a little p***y that gets his feelings hurt throughout the game.
The "it's within you all along" shtick feels like a copout. The story would've been faster if Sora just went straight to the end.
All the disney worlds are essentially fillers in terms of plot. At least KH1 tried to weave in Disney with KH original story, but this time it felt like Nomura was obligated to squeeze in Disney stuff because branding.
Another peeve of mine was that KH3 end is too Sora-centric, effectively negating character arcs and developments of all other characters. Sora didn't have to insert himself into Aqua and Ventus fight with Tera, or Axel was useless despite his "training" with Kairi. So I've heard, Re:mind fixed some of these, but I didn't play it. I played the original, and got massively bummed. Convoluted plot, cheap ending.
Pardon me, just venting out.
@@b.heaven9234 no I agree. The dlc does fix the issue of Sora being a part of those fights he shouldn’t have been in. It made the fight with Xion, Roxas, and Axel a hundred times better. Fixes some plot points as well but really all of that should have been in the base game. It’s basically a plot patch with Final Mix boss fights ala KH2
@@JaredScott Never heard of a plot patch before. How does that even work? It's not a DLC per se, but an actual patch? What happens if you download it? Are the non-Sora fights optional?
@@b.heaven9234 so Sora basically does a small time jump to the beginning of the last portion of KH3 where you have the many boss fights. By making small changes in his decisions you get Roxas, Axel, and Xion fighting together without Soras intervention. It’s been years since I played it but the first half of the DLC is Sora making those small changes which make the overall ending much more satisfying since the other characters get there moment to shine in the boss fights.
The later half of the DLC is Where you get the new level and new story that explains what the heck happened to Sora in the last hour of the game as well as set up KH4.
Granted, none of this should have been necessary to begin with, but I promise it does fix a lot of the story issues the ending had. Except for retconning Xehanorts reason for summoning KH. They still keep that crappy plot point lol
I remember when I played Ys Memories of Celecta and got to the ending, I thought it was the BAD ending and I didn’t do much of the side quests like how Ys VIII had it. But after asking on Reddit that ending was the real ending, which was a bummer actually since it just ends.
I fully expected to bust out my pitchfork just from the thumbnail, but I gotta agree with you. I played Xenogears for the first time last year and fell in love with it. But I think I was in love with the vision and the ambition. Objectively, the second disc is effectively a whole different game, and man is it hard to follow all those story beats running past you at light speed
I think people are getting the idea that I hated Xenogears. It's more lamenting what it could have been.
The issue with Xenogears is that the devs ran out of time and had to wrap it up fast, which is why the second disk is so awful. Most of the first disk, and the concept, is incredible.
Man Berseria felt 15-20 hours too long. I really enjoyed it until it dragged on, surprised to see that one be considered a 10/10 for you. The last wing of the game just ruined it for me.
I loved every second of it. Couldn't get enough in fact, which is why I had high expectations for Vesperia. Expectations in the mud by the end though.
I actely finished Xenogears a cuple of days ago, as a teen i got stuck att the "Shivat defence" section, and now as 41yo i had a bit more experionce (grinding) to get thrue the hole game, loved it but the second disc is what it is, still loved it for what it is.
Mad respect for putting so many LOVED games on this list yet you still found reasonable reasons why they disappointed you in some ways
Tales of vesperia was peak in my opinion. I got few playthroughs out of it.
I would add Cold Steel 4 that ended the Erebonia arc like a wet fart ends a speech.
I still love the game regardless of disc 2 of Xenogears being mostly a visual novel. So happy we had the game released in North America and so glad to have my copy to this day.
Man I hate it when RUclipsrs release a 30+ minutes video with no timestamps
Yet you still put in effort to make a comment, so I guess you don’t really hate it that much. 🤷🏾♂️
@@jeromejp what are you talking about, if I don't tell the RUclipsr what I'd like them to do, how should I expect them to change?
@@sebastienv5557 that implies that you actually like the channel enough to do that. Your comment suggests that you don’t. So don’t comment at all. Besides, Kiseki nut knows about timestamps. He uses them in his videos, just not this one. You’d know that if you actually paid attention.
The kids today have really fried their attentionspan. Can't watch a video without being spoonfed the cliffnotes.
@@reutermo this video was meant to be more off-the-cuff anyway, so the ‘cliff notes’ as you say wouldn’t have done much.
Vesperia is my favorite game of all time but if they ended the game after act 2 with that main villain dying it would be a lot better.
Ah man, this is more a matter of purely personal taste than anything else. There is a reason why people like or dislike certain games and it could be because they have captivating characters even if the narrative isn't the best in the world or because the game has a perfect balance between gameplay and narrative, there are games with weak stories that are incredibly good like FFXII. Grandia is a game that in general is so captivating that it makes up for the lack of development of some characters. Star Ocean has always been a game that focused more on your group than on the series' villains. In a way, you're not purely watching an anime or movie when you're playing an RPG because it's a set of factors.
I am 💯 with you on Vesperia and that final act. I played Vesperia hot off of playing Abyss (and Symphonia before that) and it fell flat for me too. I loved the characters, but the story didn’t land, especially with how powerful an impact Abyss had on me from start to finish. I have Vesperia for Switch now and I’m planning to play through it this summer. I think it might land better now that it’s not back to back with a story-heavy Tales game.
I will never forget how Xenogears made tremble in fear when all pieces came together, or the moment I had to puke because the revelations were too much for me.
Xenogears disc 1 is my favorite jrpg of all-time.
Xenogears disc 2 is my favorite visual novel of all-time.
I think a lot of its beauty is in the fact that the work of art was left basically unfinished. Which is incredibly apt given Xenogears’ story. Lacan never finished his portrait of Sophia either.
100% - I do think there's a metaphor there in regards to the unfinished painting and the unfinished game. But objectively speaking, I can't give a pass to a game that effectively switches genres. If a modern JRPG does this, it gets crucified. So I can't give a pass to XG.
@@TheKisekiNut I read that all in my head with your voice. I’m not faulting the game, or Takahashi. Square. All day. Still the best jrpg I’ve ever played
They cut the dude’s budget so he packed ip and left. Square forced Takahashi to create his own Final Fantasy, and now his studio is more respected than his previous employer. Monolith is helping Nintendo on games that sell tens of millions while also dropping bangers of their own. Square cutting the Xenogears budget was the best thing that ever happened to Tetsuya Takahashi career-wise. Square is a clown car drifting too close to a dumpster fire right now. Somebody better warn them.
damn I wish I could add more likes to comments like this
I can understand this especially if u don't have enough free time cuz after some weeks and not finishing something can make u feel negative about it
People took the list personally with that amount of downvotes! Sad to see people can't take someone having a different opinion.
It's the nature of the beast. Integrity is everything, and I'm not going to say a game like Xenogears is a masterpiece, I just don't see it like that. If a modern game did the same thing irrespective of budget or time, it would be crucified for it and rightly so.
I love the off the cusp nature of this vid man! 😂😂 the Vesperia commentary had me chuckling great video as always
19:16 As a long time FGC/Smash player, thank you for putting this in here. That made me laugh a lot!
Nooo.. Vesperia is one of the best in the series. I’d have gone with Zestiria as one which gets worse. I’m sorta with you on Ryza. I love Ryza but I feel like the Mysterious games were peak Atelier. MoC is such a fabulous game though, sure not as good as VIII but I’m surprised its here lol
I pretty much gave up on Vesperia once it became apparent the main plot thread had been lost and replaced by a string of new and unexciting aims. I read online that you should stick it out as it gets better but I just didn't have the willpower.
Memories of Celceta would have been my favorite in the series, as I LOVED the dialogue and humor in this game above the rest but man, that ending... I thought I missed something, scrambled forums, but apparently nope, they just ended it there.
It's so abrupt!
I don't really agree though, Xenogears doesn't really get worse the further you get in. It just changes how it goes about things. But I do agree, I'd of loved to see Xenosaga and Gears go to their full fruition. Maybe Nintendo will relaunch it later.
Holy crap I though you were going to list games that aren't that good, but i had no idea you were going to pick some of my favorite rpgs in this list lol.
I think some people are getting the wrong idea here. I'm not saying these games are crap, I'm saying they often start really well but get worse over time, but the XG fans saw red as soon as they saw the thumbnail. :D
@@TheKisekiNut A lot of these games are a product of their time. So, people might be somewhat blinded by nostalgia. Going back and replaying some of these games as an adult has certainly provided me with a very different perspective. Obviously we have been spoiled by very dense and deep compelling narratives with so many twists and turns like trails that just has an evolving world and story that spans 12 games so your standards for what is considered a masterpiece rpg might be somewhat skewed because of the generational leap of what can be accomplished now with writing in this day and age, but some of these games back in the day were just groundbreaking for what they presented at the time.
Despite some of them having slow pacing which is mostly the case with A LOT of jrpgs, but the adventure, the characters all really stood out and overall the lasting impression and rewarding experience you got at the end was just like getting hit with a sudden orgasmic euphoria. It was indescribable for gamers at the time. When those credits rolled on XG I felt like I just sat through an epic. It’s why a lot of modern rpg games are criticized because they are so piecemeal compared to what traditional styles and classical story telling had presented at the time. It’s why FF VII remake needs 3 full games to remake the original PS1 classic with modern tech, coupled with all its pading which imo compromised the original's pacing. Its why the tales of series has slowly but surely has reduced in size and the stories are becoming more restrained. But anyways, i digress. Its a difficult debate amongst players because when you think of a game that gets worse over time, you probably don't consider alot of the games selected in your video, because there most likely in alot of people's "top 10 favorites" of all time list. Objectively you would think that a top 10 video game wouldn't be something that people consider get worse the longer you play. There is certainly alot of games that i can think of with abysmal pacing like tales of Xillia 2 for example or Final Fantasy XII
I LOVE XENOGEARS. It’s my all time favorite game and I’ve been playing games since 1988. (I’m old. I’m 40 lol). Xenogears is my favorite game and Trails is my favorite series. I WISH Takahashi was able to finish Xenogears like he and his wife wanted to. Not just Xenogears but they couldn’t even do Xenosaga how they wanted. I don’t think Square would let Takahashi have the rights to Xenogears but I think/hope they can work something out with Bandai Namco to complete Xenosaga. Don’t get me wrong I would love to be wrong and see Square not be petty and let Takahashi and his team have Xenogears
I don't think Square will ever let go of Xenogears, they know how much value it holds. If they came out tomorrow and said it was getting a remake/remaster, it would sell in droves.
I agree. I wish we were wrong but I agree. Well at least we still have Daybreak and Y’s 10 to look forward to
@@TheKisekiNut and yet they let it rot in their basements for 25 years.... 😭
@@TheKisekiNutThey should. Both actually, remaster AND remake 😭 They are goofy for not giving it the FF7 treatment.
Even still, Xenosaga and Gears were amazing! All of them.
I 100% agree on kh3. The final confrontation with organization 13 was such a let down
I would say that what saves Celceta among the others is the short length
I like the way you honestly express your opinions.
I felt almost the same with these games. I was looking forward to Star Ocean, I heard so much about it, but when I finally played it I realized that it was a good game...20 years ago. It was not preserved like Suikoden 2 or FF 6-9
With KH3, I really like that some of my favorite side characters got happy endings. Terra, Ventus and Aqua, and Axel, Roxas and Xion getting happy endings really got me and is probably why I think fondly of KH3. The rest of it though... meh. The fact that even with the seemingly mythical King Mickey for how he was toted up to this point he does literally nothing. Riku tries at least, but sadly is also unable to do anything really. It felt like all the other characters stories being built up this whole time, just didn't mean anything and it was just Sora, Donald and Goofy being Saturday morning heroes coming in to save the day at the last second.
So fun thing about Ni no kuni when you mentioned it should have ended early, the thing is it actually did, within the 1st game originated on the Nintendo DS that didn't come to the west but was fan translated with some differences like the white witch never made their appearance here and was said the DS side of the game flowed better than White witch.
I put down DQ XI-S after 90 hours... stopped just short of the ending. I think I just got burnt out, and I've always felt bad I didn't finish it.
Recently bought it again on Steam, but after the first few hours, I stopped again. Just the thought of going through all that effort again was too daunting 😅
Edit: Well I'll be... I didn't know it was a known/common complaint in the community! I never checked & just thought I sucked/lost motivation
I agree with you on Tales of Vesparia it started off strong but I was dying of boredom with 40 something hours in and did myself a favor and uninstalled
"They wanted to be done with Xehanort."
*Nervous laughter*
Young Eraqus: "Hey Xehanort, if you could, how many lifetimes would you want?"
Young Xehanort: "14. 13 to forge the x-Blade and one to see what happens to the world after the next war."
(Granted if/when he does return I doubt he'll fill an antagonistic role but still..)
I still haven't finished Tales of Vesperia. I've tried 3 separate times and I always fall off just after they establish the guild and start looking for some leader that disappeared. I liked most of the characters, but the story just meandered.
I would say FFXVI gets worse the longer you play. Yea, there are some amazing looking boss fights scattered throughout, but the story is at it's peak before the first crystal, during the revenge plot. It just kind of falls off after and the ending kills the game for me. I hate open endings. They feel unsatisfying and pretentious. "Oh-hohoho! You get to determine what history actually is! Aren't we so clever!" It's terrible. You spend 50-80 hours with these characters building bonds with them and at the end it's just "here's vague hints for people on the internet to argue over". Also, the combat grows really stale and you realize around the pointless timeskip that the rpg elements aren't even as deep as some rpg systems in action and fighting games. One of the biggest disappointments for me overall.
Great discussion and yeah, I hated Vesperia…. I can’t wait to play Berseria actually! Maybe that will be the one I finally like! Tales just hasn’t vibed with me yet but I’m certain ONE of them will! I love videos like this because it’s just pure honesty and I respect that!
Gears doesn’t belong here imo, yeah they run out of funds for Disc 2 but the game still has you enthralled all the way through the credits despite it.
Agreed
Unfortunately it's true though. Putting aside how fascinating the concepts are at the end of the day it's supposed to be a story and beyond that, it's supposed to be an actual rpg game to be played. One can admire the scope and ideas it tried to represent but ultimately it was rushed and because of that it suffers severely as an actual JRPG to sit down and actually play because of it. It's a common criticism. Besides sporadic half finished dungeons to slog through and pivotal boss battles, there's less and less "game" to actually be played the longer you get into it. It's one of the many reasons people are begging SE to remake it. Thankfully the latter games got better at this.
Aww. So sorry you missed Tales of the Abyss. I loved it. That was my first Tales game. I had high hopes for Vesperia but I lost interest about half way through.
I had one problem with Ryza 3. I loved how the closed out the story arc for characters in the series from the start, because I invested so much time with them and watched them grow. But they introduced new characters and tried to have a complete arc for them squeezed into one game.
100%! They didn't need to introduce any new characters to Ryza 3, give us round outs to the ones who were already a part of the team. That was a big issue for sure.
As for Abyss, playing it as we speak! 15 hours in, but it is light years ahead of Vesperia.
Great! I'm so glad you like it so far.
Vesperia (the original on Xbox 360) literally got me into JRPGs, so for that, it will always have a special place in my heart, even if I've probably played objectively better games since.
I'd put Trails of Cold Steel, the full series on the list. The ending of 1 was shocking. Two was arguably the highpoint of Trails as a whole, but then the pattern of reversing the major moments of each game only to replace them with new-yet-all-to-familiar moments began. With each one being less believable than the last. Oh and then the Interlude anime between 2 and 3 came out years late and was unbelievably bad.
I personally really hated CS2. CS3 was good; CS4 just decent
It's very subjective. I absolutely disagree with your opinion, for example.
You could argue that all of this is subjective, but honestly I kinda think your opinion is an overly opinionated hot take.
@@alexanderougai4899 I don't think it's particularly hot. At least once a game, but even more later on, they loudly proclaim that someone is dead only to trot them back out. I've been struggling to find the will to finish 4. Killing Ollivert was such a shark jump and I was absolutely correct to not believe it for a second. It's a lame trope and they've run it into the ground.
But yeah, it is subjective. That's the whole point of all of this. But it's also objectively poor writing. Wiping away consequences and turning anything that advances the plot into a scam for sympathy doesn't work for me.
I hope the next one is better, cuz until CS3 I loved this series.
Well heres hoping you get to love the seried again brah 🤝🏽@Brahmsonite
Xenogears is unfinished, however to this day it's still my favorite story in a video-game. It really deserves a remake, it's sad that company politics might not let that happen. Again, for those who eenjoy stories, it's a masteerpiece
Tales of Berseria, last half was a chore, characters were really grating especially Velvet and i was pretty tired of listening to them, that ending was something else tho made a barely 7/10 game into an 8 in my eyes and even shed tears
Controversial opinion: if Xenogears ever gets remade, I don’t want Takahashi involved. At most I’d have him be some sort of producer. He shouldn’t direct it, he shouldn’t write it. Besides, let’s not forget that Xenogears was not just Takahashi but also Soraya Saga and I can’t see her coming back. Just have a new team of all stars who were fans of the original game give it a shot. Plus, I doubt Takahashi would be involved without Monolith which means Nintendo and we really don’t need Nintendo to be involved at all.
*rubs face* Oh boy... was not ready for all these steaming hot takes.
I was so disappointed with KH3. I waited a decade and bought this day one for a slipshod rush job. Looked gorgeous but the worlds had next to no story and the ending was just a travesty. At least they concluded the trios (axel, roxas, xion & terra, ventus, aqua) stories but the way they did it also felt half hearted. The tragedy leading up was great story telling and then they decided to just bring everyone back to make it all a happy ending. I prefer happy ending over sad but after all that build up they have a one world with boss fights just bringing everyone back one by one undoing all that investment? One of my biggest disappointments in gaming.
"I don't need to say why it's here." I've never played Xenogears so I have no idea what you are talking about and clicked on this video so I could educate myself on why. So yes when making a list like this you do need to say why. If I was worried about spoilers I wouldn't have clicked the video or you could add an additional spoiler alert if you're worried about this.
they ran out of time and funding, a good part of the last third of the game was a slidehow
And he does. He talks about why for several minutes in detail. Which you obviously heard of you heard the comment. Unless you immediately paused and comment spammed, lol.
But he does says why, so what is the point of this comment?
In case It wasn't clear enought: disk 1 one Xenogear plays Fine, and It is an amazing experience. Disk 2 on the other hand, is were they run out of money, so the game becomes kinda like a text-based game, with a few images and cutscenes, and so Very minor gameplay options (like a few Boss batles) and that, despise still having a amazing story, It Just isn't satisfiying watching the conclusion of that amazing game like this.
I do talk about it, so no idea what you're getting at.
Wow, this entire video i disagree with
Fore me, i knew kingdom hearts 3 wa gonna have issues when the entire Forzen world was essentially a retell of the whole movie with sora on the background to remind us we were still playing kingdom hearts. And the final part had some good moments but a lot of it is quite forgettable.
Vesperia. Yeah, like the assholes cussing out a child because they thought she was some kind of criminal pirate. That right there pissed me off about the game. Patty was one of my favorite characters.
Star Ocean: The Second Story was one of those games that I’m not sure what my experience would have been if I didn’t get that full color strategy guide. Wouldn’t have recruited several characters, and wouldn’t have touched item creation or cooking much at all. I 100% agree the story does kind of fall apart on the second disc. I don’t even remember why I had to kill the last boss, and good thing that strategy guide warned me not to accidentally SPEAK to a certain character in a particular town before the end game events because doing so automatically triggers a really powered up version of the end boss. Game also was buggy as hell and playing with dual shock rumble on could cause crashes for some reason. Still, I have a lot of nostalgia for this game.
I really liked your video format with you going off of notes. It seemed much more natural and honest. Amazing this weekend!!
Have you taken a look at Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 yet!?!?!?
Dude whenever I watch your videos, i’m like “this guy gets it” when it comes to Celceta. I loved it and it’s just solid. And underrated as far as Ys goes and in general. But sure, the antagonists are a bit forgettable. And the ending is semi-rushed and semi anticlimactic. But I loved the gameplay, Adol flashbacks, characters, crafting system (much preferred this to VIII’s), and environment.
The way all of the games are on my backlog 💀
Vesperia was my first tales. However I found it a bit too grindy and with a somehow stiffy combat. And I agree with you that it drags on at the end and totally overstays its welcome. The story was nice for me though, really liked it (even if it was nothing very special or surprising)
Me seeing the thumbnail…
I wanna disagree with you…
I do.
I love the game…
But I can’t.
As your right.
Xenogears disc 2 annoys me to no end. Guys, if you run out of money and can't produce the same quality...just end the game there and make a second part? I always felt that xenogears was more interested in its world setting than letting you play a game. Just make a visual novel, my dudes...
Xenogears second disc ruined the whole game. The story went to hell it's like dating a nice girl and after 4 months she turns into a succubus. 😎
Xenogears might be the game that showed the world a game story could be serious, dark, twisted, and anything else you can think of that's "adult" that isn't THAT meaning of "adult." But I wish it was an anime for a long time, as I think it failed as a game.
Well if you're getting tomatos I guess I can take some too, probably more cause I really don't like Versperia. It's funny that as I type this I hear him talking about how battle is really fun, but I found it to be terrible. By the time I left the first town, I was done. The main character feels really bad to play as, to the point where I could never imagine going any farther.
Okay now listen I don’t know how much I trust this list when Vesperia is on it and the first one I see 😅like absolutely not
Ryza 3 was written by the shakugan no Shana author and that series also has an incredible ending with some meandering character development in the middle so it was quite on brand for him. It could also be they didn't want the third game to be smaller than the second game and that's why the padding was added.
HULLO. Vesperia absolutely agree. Also Celceta's ending was such a massive letdown for me hahaha
Do you remember the names of the antagonists? Send it by pigeon!
I wonder how much is this the games actually getting worse, or if it's just burnout from playing the same game for 60+ hours. The older I get, the more often I am switching and have to leave games for some even after like 10-20 hours. This happens to me especially in text-heavy games and with turn-based combat, so most JRPGs.
However when I return after the lengthy break, I find the game really good again. DQXI is a prime example of this for me.
Yeeeeah, Vesperia I can't understand personally since I think it's a great game with a really good story from beginning to end. I don't really praise gameplay and visuals often since I usually play games for their stories/character interactions but the gameplay in this game starts off great and gets even better. Most fun I've had battling in a Tales Of game to date and the best visually looking Tales Of game to date for me, sad they changed both over time. I really like the story and characters in Vesperia, especially the skits. Rita, Karol, Estelle, and Patty being my most favorites cause they get the most development which makes sense since they're the younger ones of the group. Still, Dawn of the New World is my most favorite game in the series period and that game gets a shit ton of hate but at list it didn't end up on your list here so that's something good lol
KH3 ending I really loved, especially with the Remind DLC expansion. It's tied with KH2 as my favorite in the series just from the final act alone, just wish we got that throughout the game but I blame that for the fact they wanted to focus much more on the disney/pixar worlds instead of their own worlds/cast which tbh I love a lot more and by this point in the series I don't mind them focusing more on the original characters/worlds since they have so many to build off from.
Yeah, Celeceta. I'd rather not think about it. One of the few games I regretted buying cause I was so disappointed in the game. I even tried playing it again few times which I'm enjoying at first until I get into the forest and that fun just drops and I get really bored. It kinda reminds me of how I feel about Sky the 3rd. LOVE the prologue but once we get into Phantasma my enjoyment quickly starts dropping. Thankfully Sky the 3rd is the only one with that dungeon only problem in the series.
Well Ryza...I would LOVE each game but I just can't play it without an English Dub. Disappointed in the series only cause it removed that dreaded time restriction which I was soo happy about but it didn't have an English Dub which is a massive bummer. I know an earlier game took the time restriction out but those games don't have Thighza does it? x3
DQ11 I kinda dropped due to that sudden difficulty spike tbh lol I MIGHT go back to it but Idk, it's been YEARS since I last played it and hmm, not sure if I will. I kept putting down Astral Chain also cause I kinda got bored and played something else. Actually, DQ11, Astral Chain, and FE3H I keep putting down to play other games like Persona, Trails, Tales Of, Neptunia, etc since they just have what I love in games.
Vesperia - It's been a few years since I played this on Switch; I can't remember much about the story to be honest, but I don't remember having any big problems with its story either; guess I can't really agree or disagree on this one
Astral Chain- similar situation to Vesperia; I don't remember having any big problems with this one's story either
Ni No Kuni - Haven't played, can't comment; I did enjoy its sequel's story though
Shin V - Haven't played yet; sounds like I defintely need to pick this up on PS5 on the 14th
Xenogears - Haven't played; can't comment on this; I do love the Xenoblade trilogy
Kingdom Hearts III - I was honestly pretty checked out of the story by the time this one came out so it didn't really matter to me what the story was at this point; I do love III's gameplay for sure; I think the Re: Mind DLC has a better ending if I remember correctly
Ryza 3 - I played the first game and loved its gameplay and story; I hope that remains true for 2 and 3 also
Second Story - Haven't played yet; can't comment
Ys VI - Disagree honestly; I don't remember having any problems with this one
Dragon Quest XI - I didn't bother with the third act; I was ready to move onto something else after the credits rolled for the first time
Strange you talked about Dragon Quest XI S, but haven't mentioned the Trails of Cold Steel II with it's atrocious Reverie Corridor. I shudder just remembering it, bleeeegh.
depends, i quite liked the reverie corridor
I liked the reverie corridor. It allowed you to change it up and play with characters you don’t get to use the entire game. And it fit storywise.
@@sidharthbommineni7780 I did not hated it, but I will admit it drags on too long for me to really enjoy it. After the second level I already got the feeling it went on too long, and after that there was only more...
I didn't mind the Epilogue of CS2 considering it's main meaning and message.
reverie corridor wasn't that much, but act 2 was stupid.
Oh man, finally some validation for what I feel about KH3 and Tales of Vesperia. Your oinions on them are very close to mine, it's so refreshing not to feel like a lone soldier among avid ToV stans 😂
Loved your accidental non script commentary, though you really don't need the memes. I personally am not a fan for memes cutting into the narrative all the time. What I did enjoy about them though, was the reminder of some great vintage British comedy. Thanks!
I will be keeping stuff like that in as it's just my nature, but thanks for the feedback!
Most JRPGs get worse when you're in for more than 40 hours. Tokyo Xanadu EX+ was one I recently finished, got the true ending, and just refused to do the additional content. That one really overstayed its welcome-- such a bland story with bland characters. Good gameplay, but nothing special.
Also, any game that has random encounters. Dear Lord, does that get old when you just want to get on with the story. That includes the likes of FF6. It just becomes obnoxious by the end. It's probably why I've always preferred the Ys series above Final Fantasy.
Vesperia is a great game and yeah it's probably a bit longer than it needed to but Tales of the Abyss on the other hand would be perfect in this list since the game suddenly starts spamming backtracking and the battle stays mostly the same. Ys Memories of Celceta was a weird choice because for me it got better on the later part of the game. I don't agree with DQ XI, the last act is a masterpiece. On Ni No Kuni I find the start of the game to be the weakest part of the game and the later half of the game to be higher and better paced. I would list Grandia 1 as well.
Very heavily disagree with Xenogears being on here, I'd personally argue Disc 2 is the best part of Xenogears.
And that's fine, each to their own! I personally am not on board with what happened in Disc 2, especially when we 'know' it wasn't the intended vision of the game. I think people get the idea that I hate XG because it's on this list, it's more that I lament that it's full vision was never realised.
@@TheKisekiNut That's fair! Totally understandable reason for it being. on here.
Yes, yeaaaas, I'm not the only one onto the Vesperia train!
Join me on the train that takes you away from it!
Hopefully the hand is feeling better a week later. I get it TKN. Done that to my hands as well.
The ending of KH III was very disappointing. I've played them all over the years, and they dropped Xehanort so hard. I guess the story died with Xehanort's voice actor Leonard Nemoy.
Nailed it on Astral Chain. God I was so enthralled with that game but it just completely falls apart into complete anime nonsense in that final act. A tightly woven narrative that seems to be building towards something, and instead just frays into a million disconnected threads.
Don't address Platinum Games with requests to finish Astral Chain story when its IP belongs to Nintendo.
They can pass on the message.
Mate, loved this more off the cuff style - really personable and engaging for me. Didn’t agree with all the opinions but didn’t mind as video was still a great watch/listen
Vesperia is goated
I personally feel there's a correlation between age and enjoyment 😅
As I got older, I have less patience and easily check out, even if these games are iconic!
Strange - As I grow older I just got even more patient with games. It helps, of course, that I am already a long time gamer. I started seriously with playing games on the old BBC-B computer with games like Castle Quest and Citadel (both 1985). So I am honestly not from the instant-gratification generation to start with (if that's good or bad I let you decide). I always take my time with games and don't rush through dialogues (that happens in LP's and then people start complaining they have no clue what to do, or what it's all about). Anyway - I never rush through a game, because I don't think it's fun at all to do something like that...
@jclosed2516 oh I 100% agree with you, I'm from the 90s generation and grew up with ps1 RPG classics. I wouldn't say it's about instant gratification nor skipping dialog, this for me is what makes a game stand out. Now that I think about it, every time I hype myself about a game, I start playing but my mind immediately shifts to "adult problems". I think this definitely impacts my experience, just like it has impacted my creativity. I need to change my mindset 😅
I think it helps that we're not kids anymore. If a game isn't clicking, we don't have to ask mum and dad to get us something else, we can just buy something else.
I don't agree with this, I think it's all in the head at the end. But I think that there is so many choices and so little time that it's often hard to focus on only one very long game
Ngl, every one of your videos have me whistling at some point thanks to the Atelier music.
Such a good choice of bgm.
Also I love Vesperia but 100% agree. Imo Abyss ends up being the strongest of the big 3 story wise. Hopefully someday it'll actually rerelease outside the 3ds.
Also I really hope the Atelier team builds off the open world style Ryza 3 had. That was out right one of the best parts of the game imo
Actually playing Abyss as we speak. I'm only 15 hours in but it is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Vesperia in both characters and story.
And I personally am the complete opposite. In fact, Tales of the Abyss would be on my personal list of games that got worse the longer you played. I found the characters either dull and lifeless or I wanted to punch them (sorry, really hated the main character Luke.) The only exception to this was Jade whose dry wit and sarcasm was fairly enjoyable. That feeling only got worse and worse the longer I played. Hell, I even stopped once for so long I had to restart as I was determined to give it a real chance and actually finish it, but it felt a real slog in the end. The characterisation within Vesperia was much clearer to me, much more enjoyable. It was a bunch of characters I enjoyed being around.
The storyline did not really click with me in Abyss either. I actually really liked how Vesperia was a smaller, more contained storyline for the most part. That it is more about justice, and what is the right and wrong way to deal with it. How do you deal with the crimes of those that seem above the law, or even hold the reins of power. Is the path of Flynn, a steadfast believer that if you follow the path of justice it will triumph in the end, right? Or does it take someone like Yuri going down the darker vigilante path, making himself judge, jury, and executioner to be the only way to bring down the corruption?
Not that I am saying anyone is wrong thinking the other way around. We all have differing tastes.
@@MedionSingerif you’re not saying ‘anyone is wrong for thinking the other way around’, why then did you respond to kiseki’s comment (which is him enjoying abyss) with a monologue that basically puts down abyss? Because you dislike abyss so much that you don’t think anyone should play it. I don’t think you actually appreciate differing tastes.
@@jeromejp Where did I say that no one should play Tales of the Abyss? I think it is perhaps you that is reading too much into a simple RUclips comment about how two people can look at the same games and can come to differring thoughts about it.
I would never, nor did I, say that my opinion is fact or should be adhered to. It's how Abyss came across to me compared to Vesperia. People should play the games and come to their own decisions and ideas about if they like or dislike the game, and if they do or do
not then WHY, which is what I simply stated.
@@MedionSinger tell yourself that. The fact is, you looked at a comment that was appreciating abyss, and you felt the compulsion to write a thesis talking about all the ways abyss didn’t work. You then tried to end that passage with ‘I’m not saying anyone else is wrong’ as if that softens the blow. You can tell yourself whatever, but you know what you did.
Usually when a game starts getting worse is when I quit. I only have so much me to spend on everything.
I generally see most games through to the end. The ones I abandon are generally irredeemable for my personal tastes.
I was absolutely in tears laughing during the Vesperia part. That was amazing. Yet very true for a lot of it. Rita can be very hit or miss. Act 3 is nowhere as good as act 1 and act 2. Act 2 has some direction issues in the middle part. And the final boss is okay…….. like the battles the could be much better. both sides are trying to do the same thing but on extremely opposite sides. Still my favorite Tales game by far. Graces and Keroro RPG (Im counting that as an tales game) are 2nd and 3rd respectively.
I like the more casual approach in this video. I enjoyed it immensely! Xenogears is my all-time favorite JRPG, and I've played it countless time now...however that last dungeon was so frustratingly boring, I just skip it entirely.
Babel Tower man, I can't.
Xenogears is still the greatest jrpg ever made
I can say the same about what happen to Astral Chain for Dark Cloud 2. Why did Level 5 stop the series at 2?
Maybe it didn’t sell well?
Maybe Level 5 doesn’t care about the franchise anymore?
@@TheSpectacledOwl Level 5 is really good at making games, but really bad at business in the gaming industry, I honestly doubt sales is a major factor in which games they make
@@tomykong2915 Yeah, fair. Their marketing is non-existent outside Japan. One of their biggest properties, Yo-kai Watch, literally fell off the map BECAUSE they didn't push it in the West like how Bandai-Namco pushes Digimon (they barely push anything that isn't Gundam, Elden Ring/Soulsbourne, or SAO, yet Digimon still has a presence).
Yo-kai Watch has since dropped off since its peak.
Can I say just how much I agree with you on Vesperia? I came in with great expectations and during the 1st act i was genuinely having fun (didn’t think it was great but it was ok) but act 2….omg honestly i felt that people were just running around aimlessly.
It is unbelievably aimless, with borderline hypocritical dialogue at times too.
@@TheKisekiNut also, how about the 2-3 min discussion every time before you enter a town on who stays with the party and he is going to leave (only to re-join half an hour later)?
TKN hurting his hand over sports makes me identify w/ him that much more - we're both psycho 🤣
It's mostly healed now thank god! I didn't even support either of the teams, but CL Final night is always wild at the pub.
Everything you Saud about Vesperia I completely agree with. When it came out, I was so bummed it wasn't on PS3. It looked beautiful, and Repede is so cool! I played it years later and my disappointment was immeasurable.
Maybe I don't like it much because I've played the later Tales of games, which I enjoyed so much (Xillia and Graces are top tier)
Vesperia has too big a cast, and Rita hitting Carol is not charming, made me not like her right away.
I would say it is way rarer for an RPG not to get worse the longer you play it. There are very few games that can keep me pumped to play the whole way through. Maybe this is because I am getting older, but only some of the smaller indie games I have played recently have kept me interested all the way to the end. Some of the worst I can think of is Fire Emblem 3 houses, Xenoblade 2, and 90% of square enix games since they became square enix lol.
