If great characters, great character writing, and great character development are what you truly value in a game, then you could have ended this video with the thumbnail: Lloyd, Ellie, Tio and Randy are truly as good as it gets. I will ride with the Special Support Section anytime, any day and anywhere.

Jrpgs are my favorite genre as well. Been a fan since I got Mario RPG for my 9th birthday in 1996.
I’ve had to take a step back the last few years since my kids are 1 and 3 and I rarely get more than a few hours a week to play. Thankfully some smaller yet fantastic JRPGs like Granblue Relink can fill the void.

I really enjoyed that game, was a huge surprise for me! It’s actually on my list of best shorter JRPGs that I made a video on just a little while back. Check it out if you haven’t yet!

Loved the video! Congrats on 5k. The thing I love most about JRPGs is the music and how, usually, it ties in so perfectly with what is going on in the game. Then to hear those tracks outside of the game while driving, working, ect and instantly recalling that exact moment in the game. It's almost like you get to experience the game again just by listening to the soundtrack.

Taking a look back, every game I loved have a killer soundtrack, rpg or not.
The soundtrack alone is the real hook, making an ok game a good game, or a really good game a masterpiece.
A bad soundtrack can also give the opposite.
An ok game is now a bad one.

JRPGs do teach great life lessons! I'm playing trails of cold steel at the moment and I find myself 'role playing' Rean a bit in real life and helping people out more, instead of saying 'not my problem' I focus a bit on improving the day for others.. gotta get all those AP points!

great video. I was thinking the other day about why I like JRPGs so much, especially when anime has never really held a lot of interest for me. additionally, while I too get tired of most AAA games, I don't find a ton of satisfaction in indies other than the boring choices everyone else hypes too, like Undertale and Hades. (also related to the paragraph below, I think AAA games that give you big fantastical worlds to explore, like Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, are the ones I notably love vs. the ones I bounce off of.)
I think the thing with JRPGs is that they truly do the best job of melding gameplay, characters and story, and maybe most importantly the world. even with games I really dislike in this genre, like the original Ni No Kuni or Octopath Traveler, there are things to discover and delight in, and the world feels both real and a wonderful escape from actual reality. I recognize "JRPGs" are a very broad genre, but taking it all as one genre, I think JRPGs probably have the best sense of "world as story" than any other genre. I don't need video games to have amazing stories, but I do need them to get ... the vibes. and JRPGs do this excellently. they also have an interactivity element that anime is missing, which might explain why I love JRPGs while not caring much about anime.
I also genuinely love their sense of humor/weirdness. I think it always adds a certain je ne sais quoi. probably spelled that wrong. and maybe should have put it in Japanese :p

What I love about JRPGs are the stories specifically with character development. Most movies have trouble with character development because you can only do so much in a 2 hour movie. but because JRPGs last about 80 to 100 hours, that's not a problem

The Original Zelda made me must have an NES.. and everything that followed JRPGs have always been my favorite genre hands down. The SNES was just Jammed packed with them! But don’t forget to give a western RPG a try now and then; Witcher 3 being one of my favorites of all time.

99% of my library is JPRGs, but I would be hard pressed to say it is my favorite genre something to do with every game is an RPG now. During the SNES era there was no question: JRPGs were my top. Still play Super Tecmo Bowl, an old NCAA Football, & a Gran Turismo from time to time which most RPGs are hard for me to go back to. Think FF4, FF6, Orge Battle, and Tactics Orge I still can but most are just one and done.
Modern action for me it is most likely "Astral Chain". Not a great story but think most heavily action based do not have great stories. Nier (seems boring to me) and most of the action genre is that way sadly.
Old school it has to be "Final Fantasy 6" and there is no question about it. Was great as a pre-teen/teen and it is even better now as I understand the adult themes it has.
Modern turn based it would have to be on of the "Like a Dragon"s with Ichiban, never liked any of the previous in the series though.
Strategy is either Unicorn Overlord or Tactics Orge: LucT. Depending which of the two sub^(-2) (or is this cubed at this point) categories I want to play.

Do you ever experience jrpg burnout?

    • @slam-zany
      @slam-zany  3 месяца назад

That’s a great question! Occasionally I will get burnt out on turn based games or action based games for example and switching sub genres helps with that. There’s so many different types of JRPGs that there’s typically something to play that feels dramatically different.

Great video! For me, I just think there's no other genre where you can dependably find the depth of story and character development and the variety of games that you find in the jrpg space.
As for favorites, modern action has to go to Ys 9. That game was just perfection to me. That being said, Nier Automata would still be 3rd behind only Ys 9 and Ys 8. So it's still really high up there.
As far as old school jrpgs, I have to go Chrono Trigger. As someone who really isn't into the Retro normally, it was the only one that held my attention and the only one I really loved.
Modern turn based has to go to Persona 3 Reload. Persona 3 has long been one of my favorite games, and the remake is an absolute masterpiece to me.
As for strategy rpgs, I'm more of a Fire Emblem fan than anything. So it has to go to my favorite Fire Emblem, which is Fire Emblem Awakening.

Chrono Trigger and FF6 are neck and neck for me. As for Ys9 I think it’s criminally underrated. I love it so much!

@@slam-zany FF6 is definitely the best of the old Final Fantasy games. Sadly, I never finished it. When I was playing it back in the early 2000s, I got stuck somewhere. And back then, I didn't have the internet at home, so I couldn't just look up what to do. That being said, if I was going to revisit an old Final Fantasy, it would definitely be that one. I did like what I played.
