I know it's 2 months later but I really recommend Granblue Fantasy Relink for you. It is very similar to Monster Hunter in the fact that you can hop in, play one or two 10 minutes quests, hop off and then go about your day or you can grind several quests and try to min-max your favorite character when you have more free time.
I love the Dragon's Crown shout-out. Its one of very few games that the more you play, the deeper and harder it gets. Recommended for anyone that plays locally or through PSN's still actie community.
Would have been cool to add the 'average completion' time for each of these short games. It's not something i'd add to a regular list but if you're listing short games specifically, that would make sense
This was an excellent video. It showed me several games that I hadn't considered playing before that I either slept on, or just hadn't heard of. I value that, as a lot of game list videos tend to present games that most folks already know about. I'm going to add Trials of Mana, Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Dragon's Crown, and Unicorn Overlord to my list!
I am ALL about short JRPGs!!! Helps me with my backlog! I Am Setsuna is one I would like to give a shot sometime. I am due to play Sea of Stars soon so hopefully this year!
I agree, I love chipping away at some shorter games for sure. I am Setsuna is my holiday season JRPG. I really enjoy returning to it during the holiday season because of its setting.
I personally couldn’t get into I Am Setsuna, it’s very derivative and doesn’t do anything better than the games it draws from. It also has far too many gameplay ideas, none of which are properly fleshed out, and the writing is pretty weak. The only real standout of the game, I found, is the unique setting. There’s not a lot of RPGs that take place in a colder climate, giving it a very distinct and somewhat cozy vibe. Otherwise, the game is the definition of mid.
If you ever wanted to do another list of short JRPGs, some suggestions for shorter games I've enjoyed: Voice of Cards (the whole trilogy) Ray Gigant Lost Dimension Rise of the Third Power Fuga: Melodies of Steel (1 & 2) The World Ends With You NEO: The World Ends With You
Chrono Trigger is a classic! Every time I play it, even if it's on the shorter side with regards to the story especially when you know where to go, I always felt satisfied.. It will always scratch that JRPG itch in between open world / gacha games in me..
Astral Chain was my system seller for the switch. It took me 40 hours to beat as I did so much grinding because the combat was so good! And I must say that suprisingly, the story was decent. I love the dynamic between the two siblings. It is just a shame that it is again a silent protagonist; Them and Akira have so much connection and I'm sure the story would have been better if the MC would have talk.
Witch spring series is great. I got witch spring 4 for like 5 bucks on the Google Play store and has been one of the most satisfying purchases made there.
I am setsuna is criminally underrated. Such a good game and solid play, Lost Sphere is a great sequel of sorts but has mech action which works really well
I tried it and I just stopped when I lost like 1 or 2 hours of progress because I had seemingly no chance to save and then a difficultyspike boss timemecha showed up that I had no hope of taking down. What am I supposed to do there? Grind mindlessly, then replay that whole bunch of stuff just to potentially get kicked in my behind again?
I'm about to finish Sea of Stars. The combat and exploration mechanics get a bit repetitive near the end, but it's still a very fun game and pretty to look at. Super Mario RPG is a must for any Nintendo fan, very well balanced everywhere and until the end.
Sea of Stars is so fun. I loved playing it. Just got my physical version. Fantastic OST. Haven't played Trials of Mana remake because the original is perfect and can be played co op whereas the new one can't. So kind of defeats the best part of it for me. I never played the original Super Mario RPG for some reason. but my wife bought the remake and I just need to play it. i have no idea why but I have no desire to play Granblue Fantasy. Haven't played Dragon's Crown but bought it on the Vanillaware sale a month or two back. Need to play it with my wife (got it on the PS4, the remaster) I bought I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear when they were on sale and I really want to play both. I think I Am Setsuna is one of the next RPGs I'll play. I hear Astral Chain is amazing but the story falls apart towards the end. But I've heard good things. Chrono Trigger is the GOAT. I've played it half a dozen times. Been awhile though. Live Alive is another I've bought that I haven't played. Seems to be a theme. I didn't enjoy Xenoblade 1 on the Wii so I never picked up 2 or 3. I really need to rectify it.
Most of these rpgs are not short... are normal length xd. Good list anyways. It's funny how 100 hours rpgs nowadays have made seem normal length rpgs as short xd. I mean, most of these games are 30 hours without going for 100% completion, and i never considered that a short rpg. For me it should be something you complete under 20 hours going relaxed (you can speedrun whatever you want).
I have heard about brandblue series but never had the chance to play it, i heard the new relink could be released on switch which would be fantastic, i think digimon cyber sleuth deserves honorable mention its great og plot and it had a month sale for only 9.99.
What is it with Xeno games having short second games. Xenosaga - Episode 2 was somewhere between 15-17 hours to complete. I can't say any of them are "good" but most Idea Factory/Compile Hearts games tend to be on the short side.
I love me some jrpg, yet, I cringe when I hear developers tout, "100 hours of game play!", I even go as far to search hltb, jrpg's or otherwise, when I am interested in a new game, so thanks for this list.
15:36 I really, REALLY wouldn't recommend playing the Torna DLC before the main game. It reveals or destroys some major twists in the main game's story if you play Torna first. If you want to experience Xenoblade 2 at its fullest, I definitely wouldn't play Torna first. That said, it's an incredible DLC and a must-play (after finishing the main story)!
@@joeking2000TV I'm not sure ii destroys the twist, it just introduces dramatic irony where there isn't any for players who start with the base game. It's just a different way to experience the plot!
It does not touch the biggest and best twist and honestly, if a story is only good blind, then it is not a good story. That is why I half the time buy games already fully spoilered because I was only interessted in playing those games because I already knew the content.
Oh my dragons crown was one of my most played games on my vita❤ next to muramasa the demon blade, I had I’ve 1000 hours on each game❤ at least dragons crown made it to other systems unlike muramasa 😂
Weirdly I just cannot buy Sea of Stars since it has no steam trading cards idk why I care about that so much lmao. Should I play Secrets before Trails?
I agree with most of the list, but can say I never playeed Dragon Crown. Relink is not worth the price. Story was not there. Art & combat felt right but that alone is not going to make my top 50 anything.
Sea of Stars is the single most overrated JRPG of all time. People are fooling themselves because it looks and sounds nice. If you took that away you would never call it a good game in a million years.
@@bethstranding684 the story is bad, the combat is bad, the exploration is bad, the characters are bad,the puzzles are mid,the character progression is not existence, the only good thing about this piece of shit are the graphics that have a really good sprite work, its an ok game if you never ever ever play a jrpg, if you do is a awfully bad game.
In all fairness, any game that becomes popular is going to be overrated to someone. I think SoulsBorne titles are overrated. It doesn't make them bad games; it just means they're not going to be to everyone's taste. I just don't understand the appeal.
@@drewtheunspoken3988 The difference between what you are saying and my position on this is that old school turn based JRPGs are pretty much all I play. You dont play souls games.
I thought, oh no have i become a special snowflake for not liking sea of stars when i played it.. Turns out many people feel the same way.. The story just does not make it for me
Sea of Stars absolutely nails the vibes of 90s JRPGs. Incredible artstyle, bit graphics, music, combat systems, topography within its world design. But I disagree with some of its writing like dual protagonists. They don't have any distinct Individual personality traits. They just generically laugh and be smiling 99% of the time, it feels like the same person talking to themselves when having a conversation.
As a single dad, working full time, I don’t really have time to play hundreds of hours on a single game anymore. Thanks for this list!

It's kind of said in the video: up to/below 20h
lots of good choices here. also, Voice of Cards!
Chrono Trigger is a classic! Every time I play it, even if it's on the shorter side with regards to the story especially when you know where to go, I always felt satisfied.. It will always scratch that JRPG itch in between open world / gacha games in me..

I see this in my feed same day I published a video on a very similar topic lol. Gonna have to see which games you included
I was just thinking to myself, "How convenient, I just watched Mechaotaku's video on this same subject!" Great video by both of you!
I’m approaching the end of FF7 rebirth. Can’t wait to play through some smaller games. Great video 🎉
Thank you!! And yea I needed a smaller palette cleanser after rebirth too.
Thank you for this list, sometimes i felt they made the game 40% longer by adding unnecesary things in the story, its like watching a filler.
Great list! I loved Sea of Stars and Torna are amazing!
I would add Ys 6: The Ark of Napishtim. It's only about 11 hours long, but is a great way to get into the Ys series.
Have you tried Jack Move? it's such a nice and short palate cleanser game.
Dragon's Crown was fun, as you'd expect of a Vanillaware game. I personally prefer Muramasa tho :>
I love both! Vanillaware always hits!

Hey how can I play Chrono Trigger? Is it on PC???
Yes it is on PC. Definitely play it if you haven’t yet!

none of these are worth my time except Chrono but it's been done and done to exhaustion
