    Skin Care tips- using AHA's
Glycolic acids creams have no downtime and can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including pimples, pigmentation, pores, wrinkles and can be a powerful anti-aging addition to your daily skin care. AHA or glycolic acid can be used as a chemical peel or as a cream-serum or lotion.
What is an AHA or glycolic acid chemical peel and how is it different from AHA creams-lotions-serums?
AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid. These chemical peels include glycolic acid peels and lactic acid peels, and are derived from fruit acids. They are safe to use during pregnancy but do also require extreme caution as they are not neutralised. Peels start at 20%, extending all the way to 70%. High strength peels should be supervised, however 5- 30% peels can be done at home - providing safety is adhered to. A safer way to incorporate AHAs into your daily skin care routine is to use an AHA cream. AHA peels have a low pH ranging from 0.6-1.6, however AHA creams-lotions- serums have pH of 3.7 or higher. These do not need to be neutralised and hence can be used at home- safely.
Who is the ideal candidate for AHA?
This is another addition to your daily skin care routine and is another skin care tip- ideal candidates for AHA glycolic acid chemical creams are those looking for glowing skin, reduced pore size, improved skin clarity and less pimples. AHA cream work by chemical exfoliation, unlike scrubs, Clarisionic, or other forms of mechanical microdermabrasion. AHA’s also stimulate collagen and elastin- this accounts for their anti-aging and wrinkle removing properties. Patients with eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, or sensitive skin have to be extra careful as even low concentration AHA creams can cause skin irritation or flare up your pre-existing skin disorder. In these patients, the use of a cream is preferred compared to a serum. Mixing with a bland moisturiser can dilute the concentration of AHA from a 10 to 5 or lower.
How should I start AHA creams-lotions or serums?
Skin care tip- start slowly. Start with a pea size drop of AHA 10 once a week. You can incorporate this into your ABC’s of skin care. Once you tolerate this strength you can either increase application frequency or increase the AHA strength. Obviously do not increase both at once or skin irritation will occur.
How do is use AHA for better skin quality- for experts?
Firstly you if you can tolerate vitamin A, B, C and AHA 15s, you can increase the penetration of these active skin care products. Start off with very gentle exfoliation with a wet cloth or a Clarisonic 10-30 minutes prior to application. Pre-exfoliation removes the outer layer of the skin called the stratum corneum, thus increasing the effects of AHAs. One can also mix AHA with retinol creams- retinoids for increased penetration of retinoic acid. If you are planning to use this regime, go slowly, with a tiny test spot first. AHAs- Retinol combinations can be an excellent skin care routine for patients with blackheads, zits or acne prone skin.
How do I incorporate skin care for my patients?
I am a laser and procedural dermatologist, and not a skin care prescription dermatologist, however skin care post laser or filler is an essential part of looking after your skin after a procedure! My dermal therapists and laser nurses can go through the basics of incorporating this into your skin care after a procedure. For my fully ablative laser resurfacing patients, I usually commence active skin care 4-8 weeks post laser, as the skin is still sensitive for up to 2 months following laser resurfacing. I also use AHAs for my melasma patients after their laser program to maintain clear skin.
What AHA brands do I recommend?
This is not a sponsored video nor am I affiliated with any pharmacy. I have no preference for AHAs, however Neutrogena has a long record of making safe, well formulated AHAs- Glycolic- Lactic acid formulations- both as a peel and as a cream. More AHA products on www.myskinpharm...
Obaji makes AHAs, - they make good products but in Australia they are very pushy with sales. Great products, too much BS from this company as they are affiliated with lasers such as Fraxel, Thermage, Clear and Brilliant and have ‘elevate programs’ to incentivise dermatologists. Not good practice!
Thanks for watching this short video, and respect to the brave French dermatologist who endorses AHAs for a rather unfortunate name for a skin care company.
Dr Davin Lim, Laser and aesthetic dermatologist.

I have been using the Neostrata 10 AHA and now the Neostrata 15 AHA for about 8 years. I can highly recommend it. I actually started using it for my keratosis pilaris on my face which has improved. But I noticed how much it helps with aging issues as well. I will always have a bottle of this, which last me about a year and worth every penny.

I use an over the counter treatment ( AVENE YstheAL Anti-Falten-Creme) at night and use the 15 AHA during the day. I find if I use them together it creates irritation. I use them both daily.

    • @Barkingspider

Emily Harlander so you tried using retin a at night in combination with it first?

Both retin and AHA are strong, everyones skin is different, but the 15 AHA is too strong for me to use with the retin a. I use a pea size amount of the 15 AHA every morning and wait till it fully absorbs afterwards I add a daily moisturizer and face oil on top. I like to keep my active ingredents seperate, that is what works for me.

My favorite glycolic product are pads by Organys, on Amazon. They are very strong- 20% glycolic acid/. 05% salicylic acid, but cheap.
A good glycolic serum is by Alpha Skincare. This is milder but still has that acid tingle I look for.
The Organys pads have controlled my acne better than Differin.

    My routine is:
AM routine: cleanse, apply Vitamin C serum and Timeless Skincare CoQ10 with Matrixyl 3000/Hyaluronic Acid, finish with sunscreen (one that contains AHA and BHA protection), I reapply sunscreen at midday before my lunch time run (I keep it at my desk).
PM routine: double-cleanse, then antiaging serum Timeless Matrixyl Synthe '6 Serum and apply Retin-A .05% every other night (M, W, F); on the off-nights (T, TH & Sat), I apply a glycolic acid, I like NeoStrata. If I notice irritation, I back off. I get a chemical peel on a quarterly basis. I've used retinols and glycolics for 25 years (I will be 51 in June) and they've worked pretty well.

i was reading a lot about using AHA and retenoid they can be used together they prefer to have time between each product if we can use AHA half an 1/2 an hour before using defferin this way we give our skin time to get the benefit from each product and the best way to do is to use defferin in the night and AHA in the morning this way we can get the best from each

Hi from Canada! New subscriber, you are awesome. I use to use neostrata 15% in morning and differin 0.1% at night every day. Was told by the dermatologist to keep up with this regime (had no irritation or problems, had worked up to the 15%). My skin looked great and acne under control. Went back to same dermatology clinic but was booked with different dermatologist and was told to use one or the other. Should have asked why was getting different opinions. I stuck with Differen for 15 years but still get acne. Want to add the aha again, would love your opinion!

Also an unrelated to video question, but who would I go to to extract a pore inside my ear? It's grossing me out and kinda hurts when I put headphones or stethoscope in. I went to a derm, she picked at it a little and said that she can't extract it because it would just fill again, and that I need to have a surgeon remove the whole pore. Is that true?! The pore isn't even that big! Or was she just being lazy? I don't know where to go for this. Thanks doc!

Just wondering what you think of The Ordinary products and people using acids at home. I've been using the range for some tome and see great results but wonder if, by using too many products, I may be harming my skin. Really enjoy your videos. From a kiwi across the ditch. 🙂

Can u review The chemical peels form The ordinary. I bought the mandelic acid. I have never used a peel before, and I have oily and sensitive skin
I LOVE THE INFO YOU PROVIDE SO HELPFUL!!!
    This clarified the neutralizing question.
    //At 1:30
If ph is 0.6-1.6 the PH is low it will need neutralizing- or it will burn the skin.
If using a Cream with ph 3.7 neutralizer is not necessary

Joann Dillon, YOU are the one with the accent - that is, if you lived in Oz. You would have an accent almost anywhere in the world where English is spoken - England, South Africa, parts of India, etc. If you are from the southern US, you have an accent in the northern states and in Canada. Please don't think that you don't have an accent because you do.

I live in northeast NJ, 25 miles outside of NYC, and man, do I wish you were based in the United States. I would choose you to be my primary skin care doctor and would be a regular (and I know, very satisfied) patient. Dr. Kim, is there a dermatologist in NYC that you know of who is a bona fide expert in fillers, especially for correcting scars? I have seen many docs locally and have not gotten the kind of results I know I can get from watching your videos. Thanks very much, and many blessings for the superb work you do.
