I think for those big guys their athleticism should be looked at exclusively in their young prime around 25 years old, its crazy that young wilt had 35+ inch vertical at 7'1. @@erykbuczek4704 I dont think its 35 inches its atleast in the 40s and this guy claims to be an expert when he doesn't use physics over context. A giant person doesn't have the same athleticism as Jordan with 50 inch vertical because of gravity so of course it would be a myth to some people to think wilt couldn't jump over 48 inches but he could and thats harder for a taller person because of the amount of force it takes to use your leg strength at 7 ft tall. Anybody who gets tackled by wilt if he played today would cause more injuries on players than lebron or Shaq.

@marco wolf NBA players were measured without shoes in the 60s. That's true, but they were not rounded down. Oscar Robertson was measured at 6'4 3/4" and listed at 6'5". Bill Russell at 6'9 5/8" and listed at 6'10". Kareem was measured at 7'1 7/8" and listed at 7'2". They rounded to the nearest number. Also, the NBA began remeasuring players in 2019 without shoes, which is why many players had a height downgrade. For example, Damian Lillard used to be listed as 6'3" and now is 6'2". Draymond Green used to be listed at 6'7" and now 6'6". Karl Anthony-Towns was listed at 7 feet and now 6'11".

Wilt had a measured reach in college of 13'3'' with a standing reach of 9'6'' and many people have witnessed him touch the top of the backboard my math puts that at about 45 inches. Also he was still able to block Kareem's skyhook at it's peak after his knee surgery (patellar tendon rupture in 1970) at 310 pounds. He only started wearing the headband after his surgery.

    LaRue Martin 6-11
Artis Gilmore 7-2 240 (yes, Wilt faced Gilmore in the 71-72 ABA-NBA All Star game, and more than held his own against him.)
I listed the 6-11+ players because, as was already mentioned previously, players were generally measured in bare-feet in the 60's and 70's. So, the reality was, most all of the above would be listed at 7-0+ feet today. Granted, some of the above were scrubs, and some only played briefly. BTW, there a TON of players who were 6-10, as well.
Furthermore, there were players in the 60's and 70's who were taller than their listed height. Bill Russell was listed at 6-10 in college, and only 6-9 in the pros. However, even he admitted he was 6-10. That, along with his 7-4 wingspan, and world-class leaping ability gave him the ability to reach heights that few ever have.
And, the opposite has been true in the last 30 years. There was no way Hakeem was even close to 7-0. 6-10 was probably being generous. Ben Wallace himself would tell you he was 6-7, and not his listed 6-9. Dwight Howard and Kevin Love are NOT 6-11, and are probably actually closer to 6-9. Ralph Sampson was never 7-4, and in fact, Mark Eaton, who was a legitimate 7-4 claimed that Sampson was no more than 7-2 (and Sampson had very short arms BTW.) And I have seen a photograph with Shaq, Wilt, and Ewing, and there was no way Ewing was 7-0. Duncan is no taller than 6-11.
He was nearly 300 lbs later in his career. Bob Lanier is listed at 250, but was playing at around 265. PHILA posted an article in which the 6-9 Luke Jackson came to camp at 272 lbs. In fact, you could probably easily add 20+ lbs to nearly every player who has ever played in the NBA."

YOUNG BUCK: I was around to see Wilt play. When he was in school, and didn't have as much mass, he could easily be in the high 40s. Do I think it was ever 50? No. He could touch the top of the backboard. I believe his highest jumping was around 1962. Wilt could "snatch block" shots out of the air that were easily THREE FEET above the rim. One ref called goaltending, and one of Wilt's teammates asked the ref how could he call that. The ref said "What I just witnessed is not humanly possible!" Also, you need to go research other clips. There are some in his earlier days where he is way above the rim. The only man that could block Kareem's skyhook. He is NOT going to jump all out like in a combine when he is playing. Neither did MJ. Again, I was around when he was playing.

What you don't comprehend is... well, multiple things:
    1) Only about 2% of Wilt's career games are available (and you haven't even watched close to the measly 2% that is available)
    2) It's a false assumption to think that Wilt jump with his highest vertical during a game. He would likely just jump enough to accomplish what he is trying to do. This would most likely be if he was trying to get a block, but even then it still wouldn't be a legit maximum jump since he also has to be worrying about positioning himself and timing his jump based on the defender's actions.
Take any player's maximum vertical ever recorded, and I dare you to do the same thing and look for NBA game action with the player showing he can reach something close to that in an NBA game even with 100% of their game career available. And I'm not saying Wilt legit had a 50" vertical either, however I am just saying that since we have such limited footage and it is only NBA game footage, we have no basis to say whether or not his legit maximum vertical is near 50" or not. What we CAN say is what we have evidence of, which to me the evidence suggests he had at least a vertical of 36"-42". But, like I said, this doesn't say much about what his legit maximum vertical is, since we are basing these numbers on literally only

When NBA players go for run up dunks that is their max vertical... unless your implying we have only seen wilt do a vertical jump with no run up for his dunks. Even if he wasn't trying to maximize force at every max vertical he attempted, any player 6'10-7'0 would have their heads consistently above the rim if they have a max leap of high 30s to low 40s.

Misconception that centers were 6'6" back then - there were plenty of 6'10" and taller back then. Also, Wilt pretty much never came out of the game and in one season averaged more mpg than the length of a game, playing every minute of the season except for the tail end of a game from which he was ejected so it stands to reason that he's not going to be approaching max vert in this old game footage. He doesn’t like the offensive foul,” said Jackson on Wednesday. “If you take his shoulder and you fake an offensive foul, take the charge so to speak, he really would stop being aggressive. Let me share my opinion as a Wilt fan. I also doubt his 50-inch vertical but I believe it’s easily 40-45. Reason no.1, that photo which shows his 35-inch vertical was what happened in an actual NBA game and doing that in a game is ridiculous enough. If he did the jump in the gym with full stamina and run-up, it would be totally different. Reason no.2, he was in his 76ers years at that time. He was near 30 years old and significantly heavier, which you can tell by his muscle. In his younger track and field years it would not be a big problem for him to touch the top of the backboard. Moreover, you can say a single story is cap, but with that many incredible stories of him being told, we should start to believe he actually had that outstanding ability. All those people around him did not have to intentionally create fake stories of him. In addition, you made a pretty common mistake. At that time the average height of the players was 6-6 and the average of centers was between 6-10 and 6-11. Stats are all available online, just do your research. Some of the clips are from his NCAA matches-and yes, there were not many tall players in college and high school, but in the NBA, it was a different story. The average height of players have not changed much over the years. To draw my conclusion, I would say Wilt was undoubtedly the most physically gifted basketball player and the most all-around athlete. He did that many inconceivable things without any modern training method, diet, and equipment. Imagine jumping that high all day in those converse sneakers, having unhealthy habits, playing with poor medication... I mean, he really should have lived in a more modern era.

I never really thought that Wilt had a 50inch vertical. There's probably only 5 or so people on earth right now that have a vertical that high, right? But I think his max vert was while he was doing track and field. I used to do high jump and long jump, and I it took me over 15 minutes to recover from my max effort to be able to do it again. In fact if I faulted on my first attempt, it always discouraged me because my first effort tended to be my largest output by a big %. Anyways, I don't think we would have seen Wilt's max vert on the basketball court. For a 7 footer to go up 40+in consistently on hardwood would end up getting injured a lot, especially with the hard shoes they used to wear. If he did have a 50 inch vert (or 45in to round up), we would have only seen it on a high jump attempt probably in college. I have a feeling since he did the high jump using the rolling technique, that they were measuring how high he got his COM up and not a strict vertical reach test. What was amazing about wilt was how easily he got up off the ground for a man that tall. Watching him change ends looked so smooth too, so I think his track and field background translated to how efficiently he moved both horizontally and vertically and using his momentum from within his big tall body.

Any 6'10-7'0+ player with anything higher than like mid to high 30 inches even on their max vertical would put them very very comfortably above the rim consistently. Like it would be a consistent showing rather than a one time thing. At most we see that his head reach around the rim but even then thats not every dunk attempt.

@@ix_9_ix Well he wasnt the average 6"10 to 7 foot athlete. He was freakish. I havent seen anyone as athletic pound for pound and height wise as him in the NBA. His long jumps in college were among world best at the time and his speed on the court was ridiculously fast. There are many clips of his head passing the rim comfortably when blocking shots. If you watch the Wilt Archives he could touch the top of the backboard so for his height he definitely jumps over 40 inches. But the claims of high 40's and even 50 is hyperbole.

Wilt won the high jump at about 6' 6", if we knew his pant leg length or inseam you could estimate. It looks like Wilt's crotch might be about 8" higher than the bar, so 7' 2" = 86". I found that Wilt inseam should be about 43" which would make his vertical 43".

the thing is even in a game even if you really got a 50 inch vertical and you have played quite a few minutes already then jump you wont get up as high coz your legs are a bit tired already. in March Jordan kilganon did a standing vertical DUNK and was abl to dunk up to when the ring was raised to 10'7 so his standing vertical DUNK max is about 33.75 inches then the following month he did a standing vertical jump ( no ball full armswing ) and got 40.5. so just having the ball where you are now unable to use full arm swiing your vertical is nearly 7 inches less.

Owing to the lack of footage, we can't prove whether he had a 50-inch or not. But my guesstimation is, 41 to 45 was possible. As you said in the video, he had a 35" in the pic of him blocking a shot.
    1) He wouldn't have a full run-up when he blocked the shot
    2) The ball was probably not right above him, meaning that he might have to tilt his body slightly to get his hand on the ball
Factoring this, his vert would have been 35" + 6-10 inches (we all know for guys who really know how to jump, a full run-up would give that degree of boost)

In the picture at 3:14, the camera is at a pretty good height to be close to being in parallax of the rim, just not quite. This might have been a 30 to 36" jump, difficult to tell. His head was tilted back and his body and arm were leaning to the right, but his forehead was slightly above the rim. Keep in mind that he put more effort into jumping for blocks and rebounds than he did for dunks, and that most blocks were from a one step or flat footed jump. I kind of doubt the 50 inch max vertical, myself, maybe 46 to 48, but from a full speed, run up jump, I wouldn't bet against him doing 50, in his slimmer, healthier, early prime days.

There were 2 people try'n & he never could remember who the other guy was BUT ,.....Here's how it went down..... Wilt took a regular sized guy & hoisted him to eventually holding the guy's foot with 1 hand for a second , but they put up quarters on top with a third hanging off the front of it. 1 on each side of th rim , up top. Wilt went up , 1st try , & rubbed his hand over the front causing it to fly off to the back/side of it. The OTHER guy , said he could do it too & bet some people & then HE jumped up & slapped the front of the board so hard that his quarter fell too , but he wasn't up near high enough to get it clean , but he DID win some $$ by doing that tho...but Wilt, who also bet , wouldn't pay him , but others did ! Ooo , BTW , that year was Wilt's 1st year as a 76er ! Not just Philly cuz it was the Philly Warriors originally , so that would be 1964 , I think , wow, the year I was born. So , yeah , Don't think it was 50. As a teenager & very early 20's, B4 he really bulked up with muscle was when Wilt could fly....for a little while. Wanna know something odd?? Wilt Chamberlain FT-style & Michael Jordan's 1st style jumper in the NBA was close to being the same shot. Wilt FT-stlye originally , & B4 the granny & shoot'n from the top of FT-line circle , at the end , But Wilt held it out in front of him more than holding it above him , just like MJ used to in HS & college. It's a good thing MJ COOD jump , cuz shoot'n those low-hanging jumpers wooda been easy for a Big to swat it into oblivion. But yeah , Wilt is mostly human. No 50 inches but high enough to be able to get to any shot coming in , from around the hoop.

These are all recorded measurements for him in high school: As an avid track and field athlete, he high jumped 6 feet, 6 inches, ran the 440 yards in 49.0 seconds and the 880 yards in 1:58.3, put the shot 53 feet, 4 inches, and long jumped 22 feet. This is what is recorded for him in college: He ran the 100-yard dash in 10.9 seconds, shot-putted fifty-six feet (17 m), triple jumped more than fifty feet (15 m) Beyond that the only information we have about him is in stories and recorded on video in games. But for a 7'1" person bare foot who weighed a chiseled 259lbs coming into the NBA, isn't that something to begin with. He trained himself. He had no trainers. He had no modern equipment to train with. He didn't have modern shoes to run in. If you look at him when he ended his career, he weighed around 300 pounds so he added maybe 50 lbs during his career. But he doesn't look like Shaq did at all. He looks more like a tree trunk compared to Shaq. Wilt blocked Kareem's sky hook twice in a row. That's on tape. Not many others can even say they did that once. His worst minutes per game average in the NBA was 42 minutes which came in the year he tore his patellar tendon. 1970. He came back from that injury during the season when many expected him to be out for the season. In the 1970 playoffs, right after coming back from injury, he averaged 47 minutes per game. If that injury occurred today, he would not have come back that year to play. To put that 47 minutes per game into perspective, Michael Jordan's highest playoff average was 45 minutes per game in his second season when he was completely healthy. For that 1970 playoff run when he was coming back from injury he averaged 22 points and 22 rebounds a game. To put that into perspective, the most Hakeem Olajuwon averaged for rebounds in a game during the playoffs was 17 in his 4th year in the league when he was completely healthy.

You can get a better visualization of the height of his jumps. Look at his blocks. He wouldn’t want to dunk as high as he can go or his arm would be too high above the rim. Look at some against Kareem and a lot of others. A few of those he’s pretty extended. He said he only jumped as high as he needed to to make the best play on the ball not necessarily the highest. 54” is probably overstated but no one has ever had the speed, athleticism, strength, and superhuman stamina all rolled into one like him

Test vertical jumps for a max height are one thing.
Typically for in-game dunks you're not gonna try or need to max-jump every dunk attempt, especially when your wingspan and tallness are Wilt-caliber. With arms that long, it's just not at all necessary.
And you're wisely gonna conserve energy--esp. to display the career-long stamina feats that TBD did.
That being said, I saw footage of young Wilt leap high enough that his head and neck were significantly above the rim. Older Wilt likely had no motive to go all out like that, esp. after his knee injury and knee surgery.

oh yeah do not count how many inches his head is over just he had a 9'6 standing reach his hand could get over the backboard and that means he had a 48 inch vertical jump

  • @coyedwards6184

50 inch vertical is probably an exaggeration, but when I was watching the NBA combine a few years ago Dennis Smith Jr. got a 48 inch vertical and they said that tied the combine record held by Chamberlain.

Nah it’s a lie but wilt very is in the 40s it’s like 44 inches which is still hella impressive for a 7 footer

I truly believe with your logic on the video showing your friends vertical, wilt easily had a 50 inch vertical. He was touching the top of the backboard. Best athlete to ever live, would dominate against ANY player, ANY era. Not saying nobody could ever compete, but this dude was different.

First, there wasn't a single center in the league, in the 1960's, that was 6'6". I also love video of 34-36 year old Wilt as if it's the standard of 20 year old Wilt. OR using one guy setting up for his best possible vertical against one still frame jump of Wilt's. I'm willing to bet Wilt was in the 42-46" range. He could grab quarters, not knock them off, grab them off the top of the glass. Remember, I'm also willing to be nearly NO NBA player in almost ANY play, is showcasing their best possible jump. They've been playing. They're tired. They're sweaty. Putting that up against a guy trying to do his best is nuts. Leave it alone, youngins. Some times, people were just better than you understand and that's okay.

You have to get video of him actually testing to see what his vertical is.. With tose long arms, there is no need to jump as high as he can.

He never ran a 4.4 in the 40. In college he had a recorded 10.9 100 yard dash.

Vertical leaps are almost ALWAYS exaggerated. And most guys don’t go to the trouble of distinguishing between a flat-footed vert & a step & gather. That said, Wilt was measured with a standing reach of 9’8” & change. And in his prime athletic years he recorded a max reach of a little over 13’. I think it was 13-3 but it might have been 13-1. Assuming that’s with a step and gather that’d put Wilt’s running vert in the low 40s. That’s probably about right.

  • @jamessgian7691

He could pull a quarter off the top of the backboard. That is about 10 inches higher than the photo where he head was at the rim. So add 35 plus 10 is 45 inch vertical.

Center were not 6’6 at that time. They were the same exact height as today. There are maybe more taller guys because its more players.

I agree. I estimated Wilt's vertical to be no more than 36 inches as well because I never saw his head above the rim even on the highway blocked shots. This does not diminish one bit his greatness as a player......
