I met Wilt a few years before he passed. He came back to KU for the first time in 50 years. He was convinced that losing in the national title made it so he was hated there and we didnt want anything to do with him. He was so wrong and everyone let him know it. He does not seem like a man that allows his emotions to be seen but he could not help it when he finally came home.

Saw Wilt twice in my lifetime live in person, I was like nine years old, once at a closed door practice at the Fourum in 1972, and Jerry West and this was during thier 33 wins in a row streak and the 1972 World Championship team. Then saw Wilt a few years later, he was playing volleyball at Santa Monica Beach and I watched for 45 min nobody could return his spikes and nobody even tried, then the ball rolled over to me out of bounds and I passed it to Wilt, I can actually say I passed a ball to Wilt Chamberlain! Will never forgot these two experiences and the most awesome human specimen I have seen in 59 years of walking this earth.

It was reported Wilt did 200 easily, while floyd did 158 drenched in sweat. I also heard that Wilt beat hof Jim Brown in a race, twice. Wilt had so many incredible feats that undoubtedly puts him as the GOAT athlete.
I heard Wilt threw the space shuttle to the moon, it wasn't rockets that got them there. And he jumped up and grabbed the ship from the moon and landed back in Houston. I knew a guy that knew a guy who saw it.

In terms of physique Wilt is one and only 🐐. His physique, athleticism and strength is so unreal that he is almost an enigma, so much so people forget to put him in the top 3 of all time list.
I have long thought that had Wilt appeared in early ancient Greece, he would have been talked about as a Hercules, and the tales of his height, strength, speed and prowess would be seen as just the usual, over-the-top exageration. But make no mistake, he'd be in the pantheon.

The scary thing about Wilt is that in spite of his completely impossible stats, he didn't play like a guy as big and strong as he was. He intentionally played a finesse game so people couldn't just discount him as a brute. Bill Russell believed that he was the only one that truly knew how good Wilt was because Wilt tried harder against him than anyone else.
If Wilt had taken it to the hole like Shaq every time, then half the guys in the league would go out to injury. We're lucky he was so nice. He had the good sense to know that shooting fade away jumpers and rebounding everything was healthier for the overall league. Remember, this was the same guy who broke a guy's arm and dislocated Gus Johnson's shoulder from a 100% Ball block. Wilt got his hand on the ball, Gus stopped going up, hit the floor and bounced dislocating his arm. Gus was the same size and weight as Charles Barkley when he was in shape.
I was there at Boston Garden for many of the clashes between Russell and Chamberlain. Both were unbelievably athletic. Chamberlain was stronger but Russell was faster and had even better hops.
I think to add perspective Wilt said that Bill allowed him to play off of finnese whereas other big gius might would foul and playy over aggressive. In todays game wilt would be able to use aggression to get fouls and 1s etc. And therefore be more dominant like shaq.

Everything else is conjecture or statements he made or made about him.
6'6 was the qualifying height for the 1960 Olympics, so Wilt would have gotten to that, however, it would not be nearly enough to win a medal. Still incredible for a man 7;1
These times and distances are dubious at best. They came from an interview Wilt did as a freshman at U Kansas and were all self-reported. If he had done even some of those things, he'd have been nationally ranked and he would have been city champion in Philadelphia. He was only very elite in the high jump. In an interview a few years before his death, Wilt went even further, claiming he could run 100 yards in 9.4 or 9.5 and run the 100 meters in 10.2/10.3. That is world class level even today. It didn't happen. No gainsaying he was an amazing athlete and perhaps the greatest on the basketball court, but he was still prone to exaggeration (20,000 sexual encounters?).

In 1972, Lakers against the Knicks, Wilt went up close to the basket for the slam, Willis Reed jumped up to block it, and Wilt let off and put it in gently. He could have snaped Willis's arm off, no one could stop him. He has been my Hero ever since, that and the 100-point game. RIP Wilt!

I was born in 1976. My father was born in 1943. All he talked about no matter who we were watching play in the 1980s until his passing in 2001 was Wilt, Bill Russell, Kareem, Moses Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Oscar Robertson “The Big O” was the only “small” who my father talked nonstop about. When Shaq entered the league I’d tell him none of those bigs could do anything with Shaq and my pops would lose it. My mother got so tired of us debating Wilt v Shaq. When Shaq lost to Hakeem in 1995 my pops was on an “I told you so” campaign, grinning and laughing at me and the tv the entire series and I was 18 and cluelessly shocked…😂. Understanding the game of basketball as I’ve gotten older, and learning more about Wilt….pops was right. I owe my father an apology because I’m thinking he was right all along.

Back when he played, opponents fouled harder and would grab and hang onto the player's arm with the ball. When they did that to Wilt at the basket he would ask, "How far are you going up?" and then proceed to slam dunk the ball. The opponent always let go before the end, just in awe of his incredible strength.
I remember when 6'10" Moses Malone wasn't wanted by any club in the NBA anymore, considered too old, so he went and played overseas in Europe. 5 years later his agent got him a spot on the bench of an NBA team (can't remember which one). Well they had some injuries and Moses got playing time and half way through the season he was the leading offensive rebounder, as a now old man. Makes me wonder what Wilt could have done in a rebounding capacity if he had come back. By the way I believe Moses had the best drop step by any big man in the game.

One of my mother's closest friends was actually in his class (and is about 5 feet tall, imagine the two of them together). I met him once at a book signing and had asked my father in advance for some of the names of the basketball players who were on the team with Wilt. Growing up in South Jersey I saw him play both with the Warriors and the 76ers. No one could ever convince me any other player in any era comes close to Wilt. Of course I was also there for the final game in '82 when Magic Johnson and Jamal Wilkes broke our hearts.

Saw Wilt twice in my lifetime live in person, I was like nine years old, once at a closed door practice at the Fourum in 1972, and Jerry West and this was during thier 33 wins in a row streak and the 1972 World Championship team. Then saw Wilt a few years later, he was playing volleyball at Santa Monica Beach and I watched for 45 min nobody could return his spikes and nobody even tried, then the ball rolled over to me out of bounds and I passed it to Wilt, I can actually say I passed a ball to Wilt Chamberlain! Will never forgot these two experiences and the most awesome human specimen I have seen in 59 years of walking this earth.

In terms of physique Wilt is one and only 🐐. His physique, athleticism and strength is so unreal that he is almost an enigma, so much so people forget to put him in the top 3 of all time list.
I have long thought that had Wilt appeared in early ancient Greece, he would have been talked about as a Hercules, and the tales of his height, strength, speed and prowess would be seen as just the usual, over-the-top exageration. But make no mistake, he'd be in the pantheon.

Wilt probably would have struggled hitting a curveball, but could have dominated at just about any other sport.
The scary thing about Wilt is that in spite of his completely impossible stats, he didn't play like a guy as big and strong as he was. He intentionally played a finesse game so people couldn't just discount him as a brute. Bill Russell believed that he was the only one that truly knew how good Wilt was because Wilt tried harder against him than anyone else.
If Wilt had taken it to the hole like Shaq every time, then half the guys in the league would go out to injury. We're lucky he was so nice. He had the good sense to know that shooting fade away jumpers and rebounding everything was healthier for the overall league. Remember, this was the same guy who broke a guy's arm and dislocated Gus Johnson's shoulder from a 100% Ball block.
Wilt got his hand on the ball, Gus stopped going up, hit the floor and bounced dislocating his arm. Gus was the same size and weight as Charles Barkley when he was in shape.
I was there at Boston Garden for many of the clashes between Russell and Chamberlain. Both were unbelievably athletic. Chamberlain was stronger but Russell was faster and had even better hops.
Most of the time, Wilton was elegantly athletic. Sometimes other players would pull stuff with Wilt. For example ,Clyde Lovellette lost a few teeth.

These times and distances are dubious at best. They came from an interview Wilt did as a freshman at U Kansas and were all self-reported. If he had done even some of those things, he'd have been nationally ranked and he would have been city champion in Philadelphia. He was only very elite in the high jump. In an interview a few years before his death, Wilt went even further, claiming he could run 100 yards in 9.4 or 9.5 and run the 100 meters in 10.2/10.3. That is world class level even today. It didn't happen. No gainsaying he was an amazing athlete and perhaps the greatest on the basketball court, but he was still prone to exaggeration (20,000 sexual encounters?).

He could have snaped Willis's arm off, no one could stop him. He has been my Hero ever since, that and the 100-point game. RIP Wilt!

I was born in 1976. My father was born in 1943.
All he talked about no matter who we were watching play in the 1980s until his passing in 2001 was Wilt, Bill Russell, Kareem, Moses Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Oscar Robertson “The Big O” was the only “small” who my father talked nonstop about.
When Shaq entered the league I’d tell him none of those bigs could do anything with Shaq and my pops would lose it.
My mother got so tired of us debating Wilt v Shaq. When Shaq lost to Hakeem in 1995 my pops was on an “I told you so” campaign, grinning and laughing at me and the tv the entire series and I was 18 and cluelessly shocked…😂.

I remember when 6'10" Moses Malone wasn't wanted by any club in the NBA anymore, considered too old, so he went and played overseas in Europe. 5 years later his agent got him a spot on the bench of an NBA team (can't remember which one). Well they had some injuries and Moses got playing time and half way through the season he was the leading offensive rebounder, as a now old man. Makes me wonder what Wilt could have done in a rebounding capacity if he had come back. By the way I believe Moses had the best drop step by any big man in the game.
We didn’t have him around nearly long enough. I would have done anything to have been able to hear Wilt’s views on the game and the world for the past 22 years. RIP Big Dipper. ❤️

He grew up in West Philly same neighborhood as my Grandpop. They were on the same PAL team. Grandpop quit the team because the coach told the kids they had to pass to Wilt all the time. Grandpop wanted the rock. "One of the biggest mistakes I ever made" Grandpop would say.

@@TheJFLStudios My father graduated from Overbrook just before Wilt started there. One of my mother's closest friends was actually in his class (and is about 5 feet tall, imagine the two of them together). I met him once at a book signing and had asked my father in advance for some of the names of the basketball players who were on the team with Wilt. He seemed genuinely touched because from all accounts, high school was the last time he ever was close to being a normal person and out of the spotlight.

It’s too bad because of the lack of social media options when he played not enough people; got to see just how incredibly awesome Wilt Chamberlain was. I had this news magazine duo come into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame when I had the fortunate opportunity to work there. I was asked who the greatest player of all time was. I said, Wilt Chamberlain.
The night he scored 100 points, the game still had time on the clock...the game was stopped.
That will never happen again.
Watching "Wilt The Stilt" play BBall live was among the most amazing athletic experiences I've ever witnessed. Yeah, I'm that old and I'm proud of it and those glory days are my fondest memories.

I'm that old too, and I agree. I kept looking for a 7 foot center to come along who could do as much and as well and be as impressive to watch, at both ends of the court. It hasn't happened yet, by a long shot.
Growing up in South Jersey I saw him play both with the Warriors and the 76ers. No one could ever convince me any other player in any era comes close to Wilt. Of course I was also there for the final game in '82 when Magic Johnson and Jamal Wilkes broke our hearts.

He’s an all time great but let’s be real. His offensive game is long gone in today’s NBA. Saying he could adapt is a big “what if” question which could be applied to anyone else. All we know for sure is that today’s players would dominate older generations, because of their superior athleticism and skill. Athletes and their sports evolve over time, it’s unlikely a player from past generations would “dominate” today’s NBA.

But the realistic side of it, is knowing that what makes great players great in the first place is being able to adapt and get ahead of the curve. It's hard to think how arguably the most athletically gifted athlete of all time, known for his insane strength and relative quickness for his massive frame died of a heart attack in his early 60s. Wilt was the one guy you'd think would live up to 140 years old or something.
Large people's hearts have to work much harder. A lot of them end up having heart trouble. He was also an elite athlete that trained hard his whole life and that can be hard on your heart, too. Ever hear of "athlete's heart"?

Arnold worked out with body builders. Prob didn't like having to take 200lbs off the bar everytime he was done so wilt could bench. I don't like working out like that either. But Arnold was nice about it. Made wilt feel strong, Arnold was a whole diff animal when it came to weights then wilt ever was
