Wow this video randomly blew up out of nowhere. This is actually the first non-Klonoa video of mine to reach a thousand views. Check out my other videos, they're good too I promise
Apparently parappa 2 LOVES to add random button combinations to do special effects. For example, Holding L1 and L2 skips any cutscenes and the practice. Holding R1 and R2 boot up an easy mode (something UJL has) where buttons are replaced with ninja stars and you don't have to think about which button to hit, just hitting the button. It also halves your score. When you reach yellow hat you can click the right stick and if you hold a direction while selecting the song, it will change the difficulty of the song. To the right is default while to the bottom is the hardest possible. (This game uses a difficulty system from 1-16, with 0 being in the middle, and right does 0 while down does 16. Orange is 0, Blue is 9, Pink is 10, and Yellow is 11.) The song changes difficulty on the fly, making it harder if you freestyle and making it easier if you mess up. Also this game feels really weird with COOL mode. Sometimes you get it by fucking up and being late, while other times you can do the best freestyles which give you mountains of points just to not budge anywhere near COOL. The meter on the right measures how much your rap swings (basically at + it's in a swing rhythm) and is required to get COOL mode. The only stage where I got COOL by freestyling is in Hair Scare (the song already has an irregular rhythm) and that's it. One time I got 258 points on a line (the max you can get is 300) and I didn't even get the rating to go above GOOD. UJL, on the other hand, the hardest game to some people, feels like it's extremely easy to get COOL mode. If you do everything short of spamming buttons (repeatedly pressing the button you last played until it switches to another) you are near guaranteed COOL mode. This game also has a mechanic called fever (the loading screen has button combinations to activate it while in COOL mode) and when you activate one for a specific button, you can get up to 2000 points per line just mashing the fever button to all hell. This game feels weird when you try to play it normally, but when you go for COOL, it goes from the having to be as specific as fast food orders to a middle aged parent to an absolute button mash fest. The only stages you have to think on how to do it is Baby Baby!! and Flight Fright!! as they have button mashing built into the song. Instead of button mashing, if you skip some beats and try to make a syncopated rhythm, (as the manual suggests) the COOL requirement goes from painfully easy to that fast food job again. Sometimes it gives you COOL, sometimes you mess the line up. How this game is inconsistent with COOL, I can't even tell you. (Also fun fact, this game is the only one in the series where you can drop an entire rank in *a single line.*)
great vid!! its over a year old but i just wanted to add that katy kats VA did indeed do the singing for the final stage of um jammer lammy and they actually made an entire album of katy covering UJL songs called "milkcan - make it sweet"! she was such a great singer for katy and added a super fun twist to the songs (she passed in 2016 unfortunately) i really recommend listening to the album and the parappa album "i scream" where you get to hear him actually rap instead of call and response. the collab with DE LA SOUL for parappa 2 is also incredible
I remember back in 2017 I had somehow mastered the first 3 stages. I personally don't have an issue with the hit detection on the PSP version as you got to hit it right in the center of the dot. The original PlayStation version though I do actually think does an age very well at all. The input delay is atrocious in fact the PS4 version has a bug on the fourth stage where they didn't time it right. As for the no warning part, if you pay attention to the lyrics, the game actually does tell you when it's about to throw you a curve. "When I say 'boom boom boom' you say 'bam bam bam' NO PAUSE IN-BETWEEN. C'mon let's jam!" Also there was a cut level from Um Jammer Lammy of Parappa doing the Chop Chop Master Onion song. The song is still in the game's files I think and it's even playable in the rare arcade version.
This video is a great dive into these funky lil' series! I actually laughed a few times watching this. Extremely underrated video, you have earned a subscriber
I can't help but blame you for wanting to know more about this franchise as well as Rodney Greenblat's other works, aside from that great video as always
the way that the extra mode thingy where you finish all stages in COOL mode looks more like it's the game's engine demo, just some sounds and 2 characters moving with an additional crowd.
So, here's a fun fact there's a second anime called "pj berri no mogu mogu munya munya" which is mostly focused on PJ, there most of the characters from both games and anime return (warning the second season may play tribute to the first game cutscenes quality)

The reason they changed that part of the lyrics in the tree song was because they wanted to avoid controversies with enviorment organisations
As someone who was about to jump off a cliff because of Stage 4 up until my eventual victory and cool mode finish, I know the pain of Stage 4
Man I miss PaRappa fandom was alive.
It still is, there’s an active discord

i get saying that parappa 1 doesn't really hold up or age well, but to say it isn't a classic is craaaaazy
42 story high cake is crazy 💀💀
stage 6 in jammer lammy was so annoying to play I memorized the cool mode strategy just so I could spam buttons and pass it
It's definitely the hardest stage in the game. Makes sense considering the scenario.
but it's so enjoyable to freestyle
You’re underrated
um jammer lammy now arcade game
Why does everyone use parappa the rapper remastered when they talk about ptr 1
Probably because it's the most easily accessible version of the game. English PS1 copies go for stupid prices
@@ToastyMann I thought the main reason was that it looked better
Heres the levels of parrapa 1 (PSP) in order with 1 being easiest and 6 being hardest

2.Stage 1

27:31 Actually, he appears in the last stage of UJL still looking like he isn't doing too well off, so the previous question still stands.

kinda, maybe there’s a “fourth” game
Um jammed lammy stage six is fire, take it back
The town being called makes me think Parrapa's name isn't Parrapa, just a nickname in his friend group or in general
15:56 it is the same voice actress. She sadly passed away in 2016. Her vocals were too good 😭
This is very good video
Parappa the Rapper needs a re-remaster that actually syncs the inputs and includes Parappa the Rapper 2 remastered.
