    21:15 the point of the combat arena challenges were to tease the enemies that you’d see in the next overworld level, which is why they seem out of place (and why the final one is just a single jellyfish, because you’re already on the final level, so it teases the very first level, “No Cheese!”)

      Despite playing this game multiple times, I actually never found this out until after I finished making this video. It just goes to show how based Heavy Iron were as a developer and how much they adored SpongeBob.

      @D0U8LE_H 5 месяцев назад

      This fact has been proven to be false in the past. By opening SB04.ini from the game files, it reveals how much each enemy drops. The game actually takes the typical approach of making the enemies drop more manliness points the farther you get into the game, with Planktopolis having the highest enemy value.

    Movie game is a blast to play and a fair amount of the side challenges can be pretty fun. Unfortunately, once backtracking is required it turns into a slog due to the combination of brutal repetitive driving and sliding challenges. Other than that and some balancing issues the game is truly phenomenal. I’m sure a mod that adds more content, changes token requirements, and fixes issues with the sliding/driving challenges could dramatically improve the game. I’m pretty sure one of those exists, but I forgot the name.

    The PC version is a point and click adventure.

    • @ToastyMann
      @ToastyMann  5 месяцев назад +20

      Yeah, pretty much every SpongeBob game that got a “PC Version” was in reality a completely different game, and correct me if I’m wrong, but all of them were point and clicks on PC.
      To me it always seemed like false advertising because they always listed “PC” in the platform list with trailers using console footage, so kids would beg their parents for a game only to get something completely different with the same title and box art.

  • @brightwolfz
    @brightwolfz 8 дней назад +2

    Reused assets don't exactly kill the game. Majora's Mask is still one of the best Zeldas despite it. Cutscenes needed a lot of work, but someone in the comments said they wanted to use movie scenes and were basically told no. While the amount of vehicle levels doesn't bother me, I feel like end-game needs one or two more platforming levels to help break them up a bit. The last quarter of the game is basically all vehicle levels. Shell City Dead Ahead and Welcome to Planktopolis... Minions being the only ones among Googly Eyes & Smelly Knick-Knacks, Sundae Driving, the final patty wagon level. Feels like one more (maybe set in shell city getting to the crown?) would have helped.
    The combat in this game, basically turning it into a borderline action-RPG, was great. Something I expected having only played Movie when going to play Battle that was sadly missing. The levels also have high levels of charm that I feel is missing from both Battle and Cosmic Shake. Probably because they had the movie as reference, the movie being probably the best written spongebob ever.
    Also, let's talk about the OST. This game's ost unironically is one of the best I've ever heard. The slide theme and Turn the Tables on Plankton being the two tracks to really note.
    Game is fun imo. If you don't like it, that's aight. I get it. Game has its issues, but I enjoy it regardless.

    Personally I prefer the Movie Game. Because it's harder. Even if it's not always in the best way. But I think that's okay.
    Because there's something amazing about conquerning a hard and maybe even janky game and then beating it again as long as there is enough fun in it.
    I 100%ed Sonic Heroes twice. I know how to bend that game's looseness and jank to my will now. I'm like lion tamer and Heroes is the tamed lion. And the game is all the better for it for me now.
    I 101%ed Crash 4 once and then redid it all going for the true completion rate 106%. I'm casually playing another 106% run for fun. Mastering that game is such a confidence boost and it getting easier and easier while knowing it's still a very difficult game is just a feeling I can't describe.
    I 100%ed Hyrule Warriors: Definite Edition after quitting the Wii U and 3DS versions deep in. Hyrule Warriors isn't hard but I am up to any task if I a game is consistently enough fun for me.
    SB Movie Game is is similar to me. The game is like "I bet you can't conquer all these annoying ring challenges" and I'm like "I beat you as a kid, I'll beat you harder as an adult with way more demanding games under my belt, and I just so happen to like the way you control."

    it was so funny hearing the upgrades and the difficulty be praised because my last playthrough of this game was a challenge run where I didn't use a single upgrade, the MERV's were killed with either well timed sonic guitars or running up and double jump spinning it over and over before it's laser connects. and the multishot burrowing ones was repeat bowling balls or maybe catching them in a spin if they happen to burrow next to me. it was very difficult but it made me appreciate the game a lot more and I grew to love it more than BFBB, also 100% is possible though 2 tricks were needed (a momentum one for reaching the chocolate creek buttons as Spongebob, and making the 3 mervs that spawn in the middle of the final room in Planktopolis not spawn by landing in a specific place once the platform breaks, dying meant replaying basically the whole 2nd half of the level cuz the checkpoint makes them appear again but I made it through). also every enemy and boss basically has double health and you have half health compared to a full upgrade run

There are some aspects that I do like the focus on combat and the slide levels. However, trying to 100% the game by getting all tokens and extras can be *frustrating*. Especially the extras since you have *no clue* on where they are, only how many there are in each level. You have to either go back and forth through every level (which is real fun on slide levels) or find an old GameFAQs guide.

I was a kid and I wasn't good at some of the challenges, but the whole point of having alternative ways to get tokens is to take the path you are most comfortable with, and since there isn't that much variety, you are stuck with challenges you don't enjoy like doing the patty wagon and slide a million times.

    Movie game was my first SpongeBob game, and while I did play BFBB later on and liked it, the movie game is still the one I go back to the most. Yeah, they repeat stuff a lot, but I enjoyed all of the challenges and therefore didn’t really mind.
    It’s by far the lesser installment between it and BFBB, no contest, but it’s my favorite.
    Even as a kid I could tell how it didn’t achieve its potential though. The bonuses have so much concept art of stuff that didn’t make it in, I believe some of which being enemy designs for Shell City (which doesn’t have a platforming section), and Slammer designs for later in the game, even though Slammers pretty much completely disappear halfway through the game for some reason besides the Hasslehoff fight, and even then they’re just reused Thug Tug ones. Even a lot of the audio in the bonuses don’t get used, though I believe someone found out that if you hit a Flinger into another flinger in the trench, one of the dialogue bits is used where they speak something from the ‘enemy lines’ audio unlockable.
    Makes me wonder how many secrets are left in either the files or through things nobody had done yet.
    Also, the Goofy Goober foggers were freaking terrifying as a kid. Christ.

    I remember that I've glitched the slide sequences as a kid via PS2 version, I don't exactly remember how I found out about it but at this time I wasn't using the Internet, unlike most kids these days, so I know I found it by myself likely through trial and error.
    Basically, I'd jump from one part of the slide, to another part, trying to go the opposite direction but the game tries to force you to head the intended direction which makes you slide in place.
    I don't remember completing the game, I have gaps in my memory, but I remember getting stuck in the later point of the game in the destroyed city, dystopian section.

    As someone who grew up with the game, got stuck because I didn't have enough Goober Tokens, then would get endlessly frustrated with some of the minigame controls, I eventually went back and replayed it (with similar results in some cases) but ended up beating the game. Did I 100% the game? Nope. Did I enjoy it? Somewhat, I had fun, some levels were pure torture to play, especially some of the time attack slide levels...but overall, glad I eventually beat it. I've also never played BFBB, so I don't really have any input, but I will say that for a young kids-early teen game, the Movie Game is kinda ruthless with it's time limits ngl
    5:23 I now understand why I struggled a lot. I've only ever played the game on GameCube. Awesome.

    In hinsight "Ocean Man" was a pretty resque song choice from the og movie period.
    This is the same band that wrote crude songs about getting stung by bumblebees and lgbtq cowboys. In an era where the internet was becoming more common staving off that song in favor of saving it for the end of the film as a shock was a better choice.

    I had this game on the gamecube as a kid, but not BFBB. Because of that, I like movie better than battle (also, I played Rehydrated, not the original).
    I'm not really bothered by the harder enemies and the recycled stuff, but I do dread the patty wagon and slide challenges whenever I think about playing this game. The late game token requirements don't really feel that bad to me now that I'm better at games, but yeah, if you're a kid playing this it is a really big issue. When I was around 6-8 years old, I did not get enough tokens to beat the game, and it would take a few more years for me to finally beat the final boss.
    Also, I like this game's soundtrack more than battle's. Spongeball/Floating Block Challenge is such a jam.

    4:49 I found a way to play in the original 4:3 without stretching. If all of the extra resolution options are disabled in the xbox settings INCLUDING 480p, then the game will boot in actual 4:3 without stretching or cropping. Of course 480i isn't ideal, but if you have a softmoded xbox you can turn on the Force Progressive option to force it back to 480p, but keeping the 4:3 image. I believe that the xbox's 480p setting being enabled is what causes widescreen for some reason. (force progressive will also make BFBB play 480p which I believe isn't possible on a stock xbox)

    As a child growing up BFBB was a game I absolutely adored on the PS2. Even today I still stand by the fact that it’s such a great game. I never had the movie game though as a kid. I only ever got to experience it now and all I have to say is I agree with you. The movie game is the inferior BFBB in pretty much every single aspect. Now while the movie game does have some good things, I think there’s way more bad than good. The worst part for me is the backtracking (which I’m glad you broke down for us here) & the difficulty. See, in BFBB the game’s story was fresh and the gameplay was unique, so going back to progress the game didn’t feel like you were backtracking. However in the movie game, after you’ve done 1 of each type of challenge you’ve seen em all, and ALL of them are garbage challenges. I’d get it if they were supposed to be fun little side challenges you could do here or there to break up from the main gameplay, but no, you NEED to do them to even progress the game. And guess what? If you progress to the next level and find out you need MORE GG tokens to get the Patty Wagon back?! That’s when I almost shoved my head through a glass window because it makes no sense! I’m down NINE tokens. Why? Because I’ve seen all the content HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO DRIVE THRU RINGS TO BEAT THE GAME. As you can tell, I’m near the end, but it’s frustrating rather than fun. Speaking of the difficulty, I felt like BFBB wasn’t as challenging and made it way more replayable for everyone not just children. The movie game isn’t messing around though. You will fall and die, get hit and die, die, and die CONSTANTLY in the later stages of the game. It’s absolutely BRUTAL and I’d NEVER replay this game for the difficulty alone nevermind just the repetitiveness.
    Overall, I do think the movie game isn’t terrible and it could have been a hell of a lot better with a bigger budget and more time to make it. But unfortunately because of these glaring issues I can’t give it anything higher than a 6/10 when BFBB for me is a 9/10.

    God tier thumbnail. I love Movie, this game is fun as hell. That being said, I don’t think it’s better than BFBB, but there are things it does better. Combat is great, the upgrade system is genius, the dedicated slide levels, toggleable Extras, just to name a few. However, it also does some things worse, like progression requirements and the backtracking, the bosses, and some repetition in sections. That brings said, this game is still peak, so I can’t complain

Yeah...I didn't have the uppercut move and idk how I didn't collect enough tokens for it, but, I didn't. So, I never got past that level. I was probably just stupid and didn't complete every single thing in the first few levels to get it or I wasted my tokens on different upgrades. 🤷

    I think the best way to describe the movie game is similar to how Persona 3's "The Answer" expansion is for that game. Peesona 3 and BFBB,despite being 2 completely different games obviously,are focus on letting the players have a nice experience overall not just with gameplay but the atmosphere and setting as well with Persona 3 having it's perks through social links and different environmental settings and BFBB having so many references to the show,the character interactions,and other intriguing things that are mostly there to get mostly fans of the show going in a positive way. In comparison,both "The Answer/Episode Aegis" and The Movie game are primarily focus on one particular aspect of the games they're an expansion of with the former focusing on combat and strategy and the other also focusing on combat and more intense platforming. Basically,if you see this game more so as an expansion of BFBB rather than a sequel,I think you can get a bit more positive about this game in that lense.
