Nice Pete. New grooves always win. We have noticed a difference between chrome plated and unplated when new. The chrome plate will ever so slightly round off the grooves. So new but unplated (Raw) for the most spin. Chrome plating will make the wedge more durable and resistant to rusting.
I like it when the club-head has a shiny finish.. But just the club-face is 'raw' and able to rust.. I think TaylorMade had a few wedges that were like that..
Yes my God thank you finally someone comparing the same two wedges Apples to Apples good grief I've seen so many videos where someone is comparing a rusted 5-year-old Cleveland wedge to a brand new Vokey 😀 The grooves on that Cleveland were worn down years ago no amount of rust would help you've got to have a rusted brand new wedge versus a non-rusted brand New wedge same brand and make with the same golfer hitting the shots
I love golf and RUclips. I also occasionally suffer with insomnia. I find that if I can’t sleep, popping on a Pete Finch video sends me into a night of slumber no problem within 10 minutes. Pete hasn’t fixed my hook, but he’s fixed the insomnia. Thank Pete. You’re the best.
I had all my irons which are soft forged stainless, professionally milled at a machine shop. They milled the faces perfectly flat by removing 0.05mm, or 1/20th of a mm from the face. Changed the weight of each club by less than 1 gram. And then they refilled the grooves the same amount to maintain regulation. They then sand blasted the striking face. This cost me $300 bucks. Worth it as I love my irons and don't want to pay $2K for new ones. WOW!. Such a different ce in confidence and the compliments I get from those who see them is nice also. Quality older irons with a bit of love and skill are so rewarding and remain very relevant in the modern game.
For my eye, the perfect design is the raw face only of the TaylorMade MG (especially in the black finish)! Looks clean in the bag and get the benefits of the rust.
On a recent golficity podcast, they interviewed one of the wedge guys from the tour truck. He mentioned that the only reason most tour players use the raw finish is because they have a custom grind, and would end up stripping the chrome/black finish off in that process anyway, and would therefore look terrible.
Yeah I've done my own testing, grinding the bounce of a set of old chrome plated wedges and it ends up looking pretty bad. Especially true if you over-heat the plating slightly, you end up bluing the chrome, and the transition from raw to chrome can turn a straw color.
Evaporust is a WONDROUS product. I use it to clean rusty components all the time and it has never let me down. The best part is that you can use it over and over and over again. Just pour it back into the container for the next go around.
Amazing you posted this just now. I was researching this very topic the past few days as I love the look of a brand new raw wedge, but not when it ages and rusts. I’m keen to understand how easy or not it would be to maintain a ‘like-new’ raw finish ?
I always thought the premise of a rusty wedge that it kept the spinrates up when it started rusting , I never thought it would outperform a brand new wedge .. When I got my TM milled grinds they spun a lot , now a little bit less , and when they start rusting over they would simply not lose as much compared to a " regular " wedge , but I guess you had a different outlook on it

I had a Cobra trusty rusty 59° for years and enjoyed it. I do prefer the chrome finish of the Volkey SM6 's that I've been using the past few years. I suppose it just comes down to personal preference.
I played a raw jaws the entire time I have played golf. Until they outlawed the Mac Daddy grooves. I used to clean them then aquired a taste for the raw patina. But you have to remove the orange rust and leave the rest. 0000 steel wool very lightly. The face stayed pretty clean in the impact area because I used it every day. When it got nicks and worn grooves, I would take a a knife sharpening diamond stone and clean it up. Then some Japanese wet stones that were planed perfectly flat with the diamond stone. Resurfacing the face would make the grooves very sharp again. Like new. The wet stones would put a grey "patina like" finish on it that looked pretty cool. I miss that club. Been stuck playing a dark Jaws MD5's since I retired it. Waiting to get the raw version in T grind. Backordered because of the scamdemic.
I have a set of Nike Engage Raw wedges, I think they just look neat 😁 As silly as it sounds I like to hit a few shots from the sand to clean off the rust and then put olive oil on them in the off season to keep the rust off

I love the raw wedge look. I think it gives me the confidence that it's going to spin more even though I know that is factually untrue. I also feel like the shiny wedges do have glare issues and I don't care for that. I think the raw wedge just frames the ball better too.

I was just telling myself that I would have little to no confidence with the rusty one thats at least till I hit one (never have) That's why they make so many different styles of clubs and so many finishes on the different styles. Anyways I play the darker gray SM8s so feel like it's new and and has the most current technology and cut the chrome shine problems. This video has made me very much won't to hit a rusty and see if that feel of no confidence turns to alot. Will see ! Anyways love the video and comments that get me thinking about getting out of my golf box
It’s my belief that the rusty wedge keeps the spin for longer than a wedge that is getting older. Meaning a new wedge is the best spinning option due to new grooves, however you’ll not have to renew your wedges as often when they rust as opposed to the wedges which aren’t designed to rust. They say you should renew a wedge every 2 years to keep the spin but a rusting wedge will be good for 4 years plus.
You know I have a question. Why don't they just use a stainless steel plate as the grooves? Then your clubs would never rust and never wear down. You could make it where it would weigh the same or less. It's like they have to make all clubs as cheap as possible and sell them for as high as possible. Like a 800 dollar driver has maybe 40 dollars of materials in it.
Ive got Cleaveland RTX 52 and 56 wedges that are raw. They rust... fast. If they get wet the rust is on next day (rain). The one thing I have noticed now that I have had them 3 years is that they seem worn quite a bit. I just bought a new RTX 60 full face and the grooves look to me to be noticeably not as pronounced or "edgy" as the new club. I bought a groove sharpener which I plan to apply to them just to get the grooves back on those two clubs. With the cost of these wedges being about $175 each the sharpener seems a reasonable and cheap "fix". I don't play professionally and don't care if someone wants to say "that's not legal on the course"... too bad, I will say the new 60 has significantly pronounced backspin, like scary levels. I have to land the ball past the pin in play lest it roll back past too far.
Hello Peter, first of all nice Video. My thoughts on this ... rusting starts most of the time on the edges and thin micro parts with a lot of surface to the air. So the rust de-sharpen this edges and micro texture ... and this again is in my thoughts responsible for the spin of the ball while interacting with the soft urethane cover. Thats why always a fresh wedge, no matter raw, satin or whatever outperforms a rusty wedge. And like on every wedge, these micro textures loose their sharpness over time, from rust, sand, dirt or brushing or whatever. And i think the rusty crystals (iron oxygen) are not that stable to create more spin like fresh cnc milled metal. :) Greetings and sorry for my bad english
talking about how good mizuno wedges and irons are but no love for the new woods. just got fitted for the new Stz 220. knew almost nothing about it before the fitting. just a lot less coverage on Mizuno new drivers. would love a video
I have A set of Cleveland RTX-3 wedges that are well seasoned. Bought them used 4 years ago. I buy used clubs only if there are good pictures and these were shaping up nicely so I couldn't resist. Will have to update soon but still hit them pretty well!
I’ve never got the theory behind rusty wedges giving you more spin. At the end of the day rust is the metal oxidising which ultimately means material will be being lost from the face resulting in less friction from the milling process and less sharpe grooves. It’s purely aesthetics
I have two of those Mizuno wedges, recommended by a fitter however he didn’t explain to me they were raw, so I got a hell of a shock the 2nd time I played with them! If I’d known I wouldn’t have bought them. Still perform well though and they’re staying in the bag.
I would be interested in a before and after test on rusty wedges but in the other direction. Test the rusty for spin, clean it, then test for spin again to see if there is any noticeable difference. Could the rust be affecting the shape, depth, etc. of the grooves?
Hello peter. Scientifically rust makes metal softer. Hence the softer “feel” it’s a natural thing medal does if exposed. It makes it softer because the shiny” we see is added to give it the shine, once that extra is gone
I like rust look, but I love my irons to shine in the sunlight. That is why I still love my MP 69s. I do want these wedges in that denim copper though.
I prefer raw, oil can and black wedges but only because of the reduced glare. I always gravitate toward the rusty ones because I like the way they look.
The problem I had with the brand new vs rusty comparison is that they do not portray what the rust actually does. Especially with the TM MG I’ve played my MG2 coming up on 2 years (75-100rounds per year) now, the first year I meticulously cleaned them to the point no rust had developed on the faces. (Tooth brush and dish soap after every round as I do) Brand new they had an almost sand paper feel, after use the face smoothed off, a LOT, and that’s where the spin was noticeably reduced. After thinking about the performance drop, I did a day of salt bathing the clubs, and really rusted them up. The spin was noticeably higher. Not brand new high, but much closer to new than with wear. I’m on my third cycle of purposeful rusting and am more than happy with the lasting performance of the raw face. The grooves are holding up with a little attention, and I’m sure I can get another season at least before I pick up some MG3’s Just my 2 cents.
Nice video Pete. I got rusty taylormade and a black mizuno and find the black mizuno gets more spin and its a few months younger. Btw did you do the voice-over in your toilet?
Yes, I play in the sun a a lot and having a dull face helps with the glare. I also think having the "battered barn" look when you see something looking old and useless but is fully functional with the latest technology.
I would consider myself an alright golfer and my handicap is in the low teens. I'm not sure if it's a placebo but I've been using the Taylor made High Toe Raw wedges for about a year now and feel that they're an absolute game changer, yes they look battered but they feel great and get good spin on the ball
I'd never play with a rusty club - might not use Barr's Cola to clean it but it would be cleaned before use! Great vlog - a nice combo of goof and science as it were. Cheers

In the past Typically the reason a raw wedge would spin more is because the grooves are initially cut on the raw wedge and are fairly sharp and then doing the chrome plating actually softens the edges of the grooves so they aren't as sharp. Now days manufacturers make their wedge grooves just slightly on the illegal side in their raw form so when they get chrome finished they end up softening enough to just barely become legal.
Lost my raw Cleveland 54 last season and got a new crispy vokey. Didn’t like it nearly as much. Rusted just the grooves section of the vokey and 💥it’s perfect. End of the day I think I just prefer the rusted for my game. Everyone should try it and see what works best for them
Chrome finish for me, how about a head to head video on soft stepping wedge shafts and potential swing changes required to see if it increases accuracy v standard?
I would be mainly concerned about everything around my wedges then. Wouldn't want to get rust on my clothes or bag or even the trunk of my car. Also I found a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water does wonders for removing rust when soaking
Thanks Peter, this is an interesting comparison, but not all of us have all that RUclips cash to go buy a new wedge after every round. I would live to see a comparison of these same wedges in November (all be it with equal playing time & usage). If the rusty head out performs the used raw head, then the debate has merit.
One problem I have with a rusted wedge.....when you hit a few during a round you will knock off the rust from the face as iron oxide is not tenacious like chromium oxide, meaning you may change the amount of spin you see during your round (also for the taylormade comment on roughness, you can manufacture to whatever roughness you want). Would a tour pro chance this change during a round where if they are off by a couple of feet it could mean not winning? That being said I have a raw wedge....simply was the cheapest thing i could find and i love it :D

I'm about to get a new Vokey 54deg after over 15 years with the current one, which has a lot of wear on the lower grooves. Will be interesting to see how much more it spins. Btw do people actually drink that stuff?
Pete, the real test should be between an old rusted wedge and one that is equally old but hasn't rusted. The rusted one will probably spin more as the rust helps compared to eroded grooves. Whatever the answer, nothing will spin better than a brand new wedge, which is why the best players in the world change their wedges every few rounds or 2-3 tournaments depending on their technique.
Love the Haywood s/o! Glad to see you still have them kickin' around. Should take a look at their new combo set! I think it will be a massive upgrade from last year's spoony blades. Might not be shiny enough for you tho lol
Are use a Vokey 5610 wedge on full swing shots that I don’t have to manipulate. I started using it when I found it in a thrift shop for a dollar. They thought it was worth nothing because it was all rusty.
Pete, I would love to see you debunk that spinier balls curve more. As in, more spin equals more fade or draw. A lot of people think so, and in reality its opposite. Please, people don't seem to understand physics at all!
@@EnjoiEmerica11 the amount a ball fades/draws is dependent on the spin axis, not on the amount of spin. When you hit a spinnier shot you're increasing the amount of backspin far more than the amount of sidespin, which then moves the spin axis closer to center, so it'll actually decrease the overall distance that a ball fades/draws.
Don’t love the rusty wedge. It reminds me of golfbidder challenges when you guys pick up a cheap old wedge to complete the bag. Like you said, if I’m spending that much on a wedge, I want it to keep the silver/metal/chrome finish on it
I grew up playing in fla, with an infinite number of sunny playable days. I’ve used raw wedges as far back as I can remember. It’s purely for the lack of glare. It’s terrible not being able to see a ball in a bunker because as soon as you put that chrome down it’s blinding you.
I've got a rusty wedge in my bag. Why? Because it was a used women's club my friend needed to get rid of when I needed a gap wedge. Had some length put on it and haven't played a better wedge since. Haven't thought much about how rust affects the spin because I've accepted the fact that I'm a low spin striker, getting as low as 1500 on drives and can't get over the low 7000s on wedges
I use a rusted wedge just because it started to rust a little being tour raw. I don't think it helps with spin these days. My Cleveland wedges have the laser etching and milling, so they already do what rust was supposed to add to the face.
Love the rusty look, I don't think it adds spin, just reduces glare, and the lack of plating can sometimes make it feel softer/less clicky 👍 I am sorta curious about wet performance versus dry though 🤷♂️

I'd be interested to see if a chrome wedge has more spin after say 500 balls hit vs a raw wedge. With a harder, more durable finish, I'd wonder if the grooves would hold up better.
Do the tour pros use a raw wedge just for the grinding of the sole? It is easier to grind without the chrome and doesn’t look as bad as it would with chrome ground away.
Do you feel that the rusty wedge "bites" the ball more Pete? Somehow I feel like it stays on the face a little longer, hence the illusion that it spins more ... (I have a rusty McDaddy 2 56°)
If you really think about it...it's a great way for manufacturers to ensure that everyone gets new wedges every year or so...brilliant! Otherwise, I suggest you do not get rusting wedges or try to rust your non rusting wedges. Just keep the grooves clean and try to keep them looking new for as long as you can.
I would like to see a rusty wedge vs a chrome wedge after 3-6 months of use and see if it maintains the spin better with wear and tear.
Yes my God thank you finally someone comparing the same two wedges Apples to Apples good grief I've seen so many videos where someone is comparing a rusted 5-year-old Cleveland wedge to a brand new Vokey 😀
The grooves on that Cleveland were worn down years ago no amount of rust would help you've got to have a rusted brand new wedge versus a non-rusted brand New wedge same brand and make with the same golfer hitting the shots
But why, if the 10-year-old Cleveland should be perfect right because it's got 10 years of rust hahaha yeah and 9 years ago the grooves went bad

@@peterfinchgolf mmm.. making me hungry
I've got a set of TM High Toe raw wedges and love them, don't think they perform any differently to standard but visually to me they look better
I have a set of Nike Engage Raw wedges, I think they just look neat 😁 As silly as it sounds I like to hit a few shots from the sand to clean off the rust and then put olive oil on them in the off season to keep the rust off
Love my raw finished Taylormade MG3, I have 2 in chrome and 2 in black. They all look great and play great.
I think the rusty look makes a great contrast to shiny blades and irons which most people are used to.

Looks wise i went to a black head wedge. SM 8 jet black. I think that gives an even better contrast to ground and ball. Love that
I have gamed Set of Vokey raw wedges for the past couple of years and really enjoyed them…just recently changed to a set of Haywood wedges more to my spec and in a standard chrome finish. I know you tested their irons a while back you should really take a look at their wedges…truly outstanding!!! And josh is the man, great customer service

Can you test the Haywood cb mb iron sets? Would greatly appreciate it if you did
Ive got Cleaveland RTX 52 and 56 wedges that are raw.
Hello Peter,
first of all nice Video.
Greetings and sorry for my bad english
talking about how good mizuno wedges and irons are but no love for the new woods. just got fitted for the new Stz 220. knew almost nothing about it before the fitting. just a lot less coverage on Mizuno new drivers. would love a video
I have A set of Cleveland RTX-3 wedges that are well seasoned. Bought them used 4 years ago. I buy used clubs only if there are good pictures and these were shaping up nicely so I couldn't resist. Will have to update soon but still hit them pretty well!
I'm a big fan of the raw, rusted look in irons and wedges. Performance never was a deciding factor and you did a great job validating that.
I have in my 60 degree only for consistency around the green.
I use raw wedges but I mainly do it because i like the look of it, as well as the lack of glare you get off the clubhead
I recently bought some Cleveland wedges in the raw finish. Only chose the raw finish because it was 3 month wait on the satin finish
The problem I had with the brand new vs rusty comparison is that they do not portray what the rust actually does. Especially with the TM MG
I’ve played my MG2 coming up on 2 years (75-100rounds per year) now, the first year I meticulously cleaned them to the point no rust had developed on the faces. (Tooth brush and dish soap after every round as I do)
Brand new they had an almost sand paper feel, after use the face smoothed off, a LOT, and that’s where the spin was noticeably reduced.
The grooves are holding up with a little attention, and I’m sure I can get another season at least before I pick up some MG3’s
Just my 2 cents.
Remember using the old Cobra trusty rusty ! great wedges probably molded my Idea of what a wedges should really be able to do.
Fresh and clean wedges are my preference!
Love the production on these videos
Nice video Pete. I got rusty taylormade and a black mizuno and find the black mizuno gets more spin and its a few months younger. Btw did you do the voice-over in your toilet?
A lemon juice and salt mixture removes rust much better than cola
Yes, I play in the sun a a lot and having a dull face helps with the glare. I also think having the "battered barn" look when you see something looking old and useless but is fully functional with the latest technology.
I'm with you. I want my clubs to look mint when I spend lots of money on them, not beat up.
I use rusted wedges for the simple reason that I can sharpen the grooves. You can sharpen chrome.
I would consider myself an alright golfer and my handicap is in the low teens. I'm not sure if it's a placebo but I've been using the Taylor made High Toe Raw wedges for about a year now and feel that they're an absolute game changer, yes they look battered but they feel great and get good spin on the ball
I have a raw Mizuno. It just needs a new shaft for some reason. I love it and need to get it fixed. I also have a Cleveland 53° that's somewhat rusted
What are your thoughts on the performance of the haywood wedges?
Yes decent. I think they need a little more bounce though

Everyone should try it and see what works best for them
Got raw Jaws wedges personally, absolutely love them. Classic look without blinding glare in the sun.
Peter. you play good enough that you seem to get it close to the hole with or without rust.....or with cheap clubs or good clubs (GolfMates match)!!!
Thanks Peter, this is an interesting comparison, but not all of us have all that RUclips cash to go buy a new wedge after every round. I would live to see a comparison of these same wedges in November (all be it with equal playing time & usage). If the rusty head out performs the used raw head, then the debate has merit.
How about a comparison video on club cleaning between different soft drink brands?
Great comparison/video! I'm not a fan of rusty look - or feel. Prefer a clean look for a (hopefully) clean contact.
Knowing you're playing a course in Arizona is awesome. I'm ruffly 300 miles North of where this video would have been filmed.
This felt stylistically quite different to your normal videos. Quite enjoyed it!
Why thank you

I'm about to get a new Vokey 54deg after over 15 years with the current one, which has a lot of wear on the lower grooves. Will be interesting to see how much more it spins. Btw do people actually drink that stuff?
How do you rust your wedge just leave it outside??
Pete, the real test should be between an old rusted wedge and one that is equally old but hasn't rusted. The rusted one will probably spin more as the rust helps compared to eroded grooves. Whatever the answer, nothing will spin better than a brand new wedge, which is why the best players in the world change their wedges every few rounds or 2-3 tournaments depending on their technique.
i got a raw wedge mizuno t20 58 degree and love it
I expected the results to be the opposite. Thanks for the time you put into it.
I like the dull, brushed metal look on my irons, but not the rust. It's a fine dust, between the ball and the face?
The way I chuckled when the scrub brush broke 😂
Why did you use a BRXS and not a BXS?
For me, it's the look... and so simple, to take the right wedge fast, if you have a raw, satin and black one😉
I love my rusty 60 degree Cleveland. Been playing with it for 15 years now. :)
Love the Haywood s/o! Glad to see you still have them kickin' around.
Should take a look at their new combo set! I think it will be a massive upgrade from last year's spoony blades.
Might not be shiny enough for you tho lol
No extra spin on rusty wedge. It is much easier on the files when I want to adjust the grind though. Chrome is just not nice to a file.
Always wondered if the rust goes in the grooves therefore making them not as wide or sharp? Wouldn’t that make them spin less?
Are use a Vokey 5610 wedge on full swing shots that I don’t have to manipulate. I started using it when I found it in a thrift shop for a dollar. They thought it was worth nothing because it was all rusty.
You all done with the edel wedges
Pete, I would love to see you debunk that spinier balls curve more. As in, more spin equals more fade or draw. A lot of people think so, and in reality its opposite. Please, people don't seem to understand physics at all!
What’s the quick explanation on why that is the case? I definitely assumed spinnier = more fade/draw/hook/slice.
Like you said, if I’m spending that much on a wedge, I want it to keep the silver/metal/chrome finish on it
my first set of fitted wedges where raw ones as i hate glare. and i have not really gone back to chrome ever since
I grew up playing in fla, with an infinite number of sunny playable days.
I’ve got a rusty old swing that helps me add more shots to my score. Do I win a prize?
I use a rusted wedge just because it started to rust a little being tour raw. I don't think it helps with spin these days. My Cleveland wedges have the laser etching and milling, so they already do what rust was supposed to add to the face.
Love the rusty look, I don't think it adds spin, just reduces glare, and the lack of plating can sometimes make it feel softer/less clicky 👍
I am sorta curious about wet performance versus dry though 🤷♂️

Hi Peter! Excelent content as always. I personally use 2 Cobra Trusty Rusty wedges (a 54° and a 58°). Cheers from Argentina!
What golf course is this?? I see that saguaro in the background, I know you're in Arizona ;)
How dare you dis Barrs Cola lol, im sitting drinking the lovely stuff just now 🙂
Copper finish with a rusted face doesn't look to bad, over time the ball strikes and brushing, wipes away any rust anyways
Barr cola tastes horrendous? The north will remember Pete!
I have two MG2s and love them!
I’m going with brushed copper on my next set!! 🔥🔥🔥
