1998 Honda Accord Post-Manual Swap Update - Worth it?

- In this video I go over all of the little finishing bits and pieces we did after the final part of the swap series went up, and if all that work was worth doing. In short: hell yes it was
Наука
This is literally everything I wanna do to my Accord
Its worth it. I had two accords 96 & 97 one auto one stick 2.2 in both. The 5 speed is a lot more fun to drive. It's still my dd with 330,000 miles.
As a 6 speed 6th gen accord owner I say #Savethemanual
I'm saving a 98 accord 5 speed right now love it
You have a 6 speed?? That’s fucking dope, I love my 5 speed
I got a really well maintained 2000 Accord auto and I was hoping to save up and swap it. This really helped. Thanks!
One of my favorite Accord. Still looking real good
Your accord is too clean! As clean as mine and it’s sitting at 54k miles lol. I’m looking into getting the swap done sometime mid 2021. Definitely gonna check out your videos before these. Kudos to you 👊
I’m glad this turned out well for you.
Also, did you dispose of the other accord yet?
@@fetc7283 Thanks! Yeah we did, end of last week.
Man I love seeing ppl do different builds on these older Accords shot be sexy! Man great job on this accord 🙌🏽
Thanks man!
Wow.. I haven't watched your channel in about 7-8 years, I used to stick around for every room tour, unboxing, and computer review lol. After pretty much loosing interest in computers as a hobby after I began to go to school for it and then it becoming my career, my hobbies shifted more towards fixing up and working on cars too. I'm on a splurge of checking out old channels right now that I would religiously watch, just to see what everyone's up to. After forgetting about my old hobbies and owning and working on my 09 Civic Si for a couple years now and restoring a few other cars myself too, it's crazy to come back to this channel to see you working on and making videos of your project cars. I guess I'll have to stick around again lol. #Savethemanuals
Haha, welcome back man
Sick car man, I was lucky enough to find a manual one💯
i remember this car when I was in high school. my friend had one new 5 speed biege with tan leather. baller car for us back in the days!
Nice job!
Ofcourse it’s worth it, because manual VTEC accord
But i dont think its dohc.
@@user-oz9sb3kf4u it doesn’t have to be dohc to have VTEC
What spoiler is that? And what headlights.
Yes, it was worth it because it’s time to #savethemanuals
Especially when you butcher a factory manual car in order to achieve the manual swap
@9:27
The 5 speed center console comes with wood actually. It looks really nice
Great Job bro 👍👍👍
Am i the only one that was expecting to see the J30, for a swaped 98(-02)???
Yup. I think theres a fair amount of f23 manual sedans from factory
Fantastic video series! You might want to replace or clean your EGR valve if it's idling strangely at a stop. My old Honda Accord burned a pretty significant amount of oil and the EGR valve was the culprit.
Seems the can of throttle body cleaner did the trick, it's idling fine now like I said in the video. I'll keep that in mind though as this one burns oil too.
A bad PCV valve is one of the leading causes of oil burn in Hondas. It only takes a minute to replace and is a $31 retail OEM part and $3 part for aftermarket. A bad PCV valve can also affect idle.
I got a 98 accord ex and a manuel swap was great just reinforce the clutch pedal wall .. I also did the ebay turbo mods and tuned it my self street tune. It kicks assssssssssss.using a p28 hondata chip laptop tunable...not dyno but street tuned by me..
I’m not done watching the video yet I just found your channel I have a 99 and want to manual swap it and boost it any tips and hopefully you left links and the cost of it all
looking nice
Thanks dawg
There is a few Accord “Cupes” here in Brazil, with automatic transmission. A manual swap would be great in one of those.
It looks great!
What kind of transmission is it from what car?
I was not part of this swap. Best to ask the author of the video.
that's so cleann
Neat bro👍
Nice transmission swap, that accord will run 4ever with that manual transmission.
what kind of trasmasion is that?
Hey can i ask what type of manual transmission do you have i want to improve my experience with my honda
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
broo i have a 1998 honda accord too and i want mine to look exactly like that but maybe with a different color but the rims and radio look good but don’t know where to get them
Cant wait to put a 6 speed on my v6
So I have a 1998 Honda accord when I got it came with manual trans and Vtec so was it swapped before it because I can’t find other cars that are Manual
They came manual from the factory, just not as common
Hello can you tell me in which of all videos or parts do you show to put the VSS to work ?
We didn't really go into detail on that, but it involved repinning the harness
I think it would like sick with some clear taillights
I love that color blue, what is the color code for that, your 98 Accord looks great,I to wanna do a manual swap.
I picked it out of a paint book at Maaco years ago, not too sure honestly lol
I know it’s a bit late, but I was wondering if you don’t have a doner car for the manual swap, what parts would you need to keep it CARB compliant to pass smog here in Cali? Would you still need the ECU from a MT Accord? Does the manual transmission have to be from the same year as the car you want to swap?
Sorry for the bunch of questions. I want to swap my own Accord, but I’m kinda lost in the steps to keep it street legal from the conflicting info I see on the web.
Fuck street legal did u ever get the swap done
Have a 99 accord, just got it painted white with a new set of black rims. 6th gen accord gang
Nice
Do you think it'll be easier manual swap it if I'm going to drop a h23a blue top in it?
There's more involved with H swapping it, gotta convert to OBD 1, modify engine mounts and power steering lines etc, but otherwise it should be about the same
I have honda accord also its good half million kilometers already but good.
Where did you get the headlights? And does your car feel really sluggish? Maybe I’m not used to the power level of the 4 cylinder but my accord is super slow.
eBay. And that's a very subjective question lol. This car is certainly not fast, but I wouldn't consider it dangerously slow
Depends if you’ve got auto or manual
I have a mechanic who charges very low rates and gets it done really fast. He told me my 1999 Honda Accord EX couldn't be manual swapped. Is he correct? He does oil changes for 30 bucks so and did my automatic transmission replacement for 1400 so would I be able to manual swap or is it a no?
I literally did it lol. There is a little bit of custom fab work involved but it's not impossible.
Someone please tell me where can I get this exact color. This is color is so 🔥🔥
Low key I kinda want to swap the 4 speed automatic with the 5 speed manual on my 1998 Accord
What all do you need from a donor vehicle to swap?
Transmission
Pedal Assembly
Center console
Shifter
What else?
I would highly recommend buying a complete donor car instead of piecing everything together separately. Plenty of little bolts and brackets and shit that you're gonna need for a complete and not half-assed swap.
I have same car. Your thoughts on 15x7 +35 wheels with 205/50s. Will those fit? Thanks.
Too small of sidewall on the tires, either go up to 17s to stick with 205/50R17 or get 205/60R15
I don't understand why people don't drive the car after these walk around. I want to see you drive it dude. I wish more people would actually drive the cars that they are showing off.
...I literally did in this exact video?
@@accordinglyryan I didnt know you were going to at first, the part that says I wish more people would Is where I found out that you did. Confusing I know but I couldn't think of any better way to save it.
Other than deleting the comment
Nice
I have a 2000 Accord sedan 5 speed.
It’s so much fun to drive. I feel like I wouldn’t like it if it was an auto tbh
It's definitely a different experience
I also have an 00' Accord 5 speed, but the base model with non-vtec lol. Doesnt make it any less fun though!
@@TheGlenerd2 that’s great to hear!
The 5 speed makes the car Hilarious
💯
You need some shims in there man on that clutch fork
What now? There weren't any in there to begin with
Going from auto to 5 speed apart from tranny how much will I be spending ? Everything else I will need to make this work
So here's what I can tell you: I bought a running donor car for $1200. That covers the transmission, shifter, ECU, pedals, interior pieces, cluster + all the little bolts and brackets you won't think of. I chose to replace the clutch kit & flywheel, rear main seal, all engine mounts, radiator and hoses, and the VSS on the trans. All in all with fluids and everything I spent about $2500 doing this swap. You could do it a bit cheaper by forgoing replacement of certain things but I don't like to cut corners. I would also advise against trying to piece everything together, just find a donor car like I did. Life will be simpler that way
Turbo???
So what was the actual thickness or size of the kustom lol bracket that went below the clutch pedal that yall made?
The spacer needs to be about 0.5" thick. Most people just stack up a bunch of washers but we wanted something slightly more legit
@@accordinglyryan oh ok 1/2 in alright appreciate it
I’m surprised you were able to program the key with an aftermarket radio! I’m trying to do that for my car and it hasn’t been working. I’m being told that’s the issue.
The radio has no bearing on the immobilizer system, it's far too old for that to be the case
@@accordinglyryan programming mine tomorrow then hell yeah. Thank you!
@@Swampy948 I just took mine to a dealership, they charged me like $100 to do it
Which manual transmission can I put on my engine f23 vtec 2.3 97
I'm honestly not sure what else bolts up besides the stock 5 speed
Damn my 2001 Honda has 296k miles lol crazy
This was my first car ever. Snapped the axle after accidentally dumping it to drive
Nice job
@@accordinglyryan I still love that old bastard
@@accordinglyryan got it fixed, might keep it around and do a manual swap some time later in its life, I got a 2018 accord for a daily driver not too long ago because I need something that won't die on me. But in all seriousness, the old accord is in great shape considering its age and mileage. I've always wanted a manual accord honestly
I love my 98 V6, but I honestly wish I would’ve searched a little harder for a 4-Cylinder Manual. The automatic paired with the J30 is just...not inspiring. And trying to do a manual swap is a costly headache. 🤦🏾♂️
Yeah the 6 speed swap on the J30 is considerably more difficult and expensive
😭 aww says my 99 lx coupe
around how much $$?
i'm in the same boat with my 02 SE Accord that manual would make my bank not very happy might just be time to sell the engine and replace it with a f-series
@@accordinglyryan do you think it would be possible to swap the honda real-time 4 wheel drive system into my accord?
can you manual swap the V6? did they ever make one?
You can do it, but they never came that way so it's far more involved than what I did here. Lots more custom wiring and such has to be done
2000 civic or accord ? Which is more fun to drive and isn’t the accord faster stock ?
Eh, probably around the same unless it's an Si
Where did you go to get the swap done ?
My carport lol
Could you demo how the VSS and reverse sensor wiring please
www.6thgenaccord.com/forums/threads/diy-automatic-to-manual-transmission-swap.15758/page-3
Best I can do, my friend did all the wiring. Look at post #22 for the VSS. The reverse lights are pretty easy, we just reused the reverse light wire from the auto harness, ran it through the switch on the trans and grounded the other side.
Million thank for your guide for the VSS wiring... my 2000 accord run fine now 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

WHy does the key need to be reprogrammed? I just used the auto ecu on my ek when it was manual swapped
Starting in 1998 Accords got immobilizers standard. I don't think Civics got it until 2001. You can't use the auto ECU on the 6th gen Accord, it'll be stuck in limp mode
@@accordinglyryan I’ve been into Honda’s for 3 years and I never heard of an immobilizer. What’s that do and where is it at?
@@mikeyjimenez6054 It's an anti-theft feature. There is a microchip in the key with a unique code in it, that communicates with the ECU (which also has this code). They have to match or the car won't start (in the 6th gen it disables the fuel pump specifically). It's so you can't just copy the physical key and steal the car. Basically every car made in the last 20 years has this
@@accordinglyryan Ohh, so you need to change the ecu for it to run and the ecu needs to match the programmed key to turn over. Is that what you mean?
@@mikeyjimenez6054 Yep exactly
What Gear box are you put in. What year.
Stock 5 speed from the same year car, I bought a running donor 1998 EX manual for the swap
What wheels are those, and what size tires?
These were Enkei EDR9s with the stock tire size, 185/65R15 I believe
Should I get a v6 automatic or a v4 manual?
4cyl manual all day. The V6 AT of this gen (and the one that came after) is very weak and prone to failure
What’s the point of manual swapping a car who’s base model came in manual?
Wouldn’t it be more revolutionary for a car that is auto only?
Like the new Supra? Or an odessy?
I don't give a shit about it being "revolutionary", it's much better to drive. That was a good enough reason for me.
Fair enough, glad you like it!
Thinking of doing this to my 02 accord coupe. The automatic slips and im sure it'll die eventually lol
This one went 50,000 miles with a slight slip, never really got any worse. Depends on how bad it is tho
I got a V6 Honda Accord coupe and was wondering should I manual swap it??
It's much harder to do this to the V6 just be warned. Lot more wiring and custom fab involved

Im original owner of a 99 2.3 lx manual. Completely stock with 159,000 miles. Perfect with new silver paint. Interested?
I have new wheels on it now. The vibration at idle was actually the driver side engine mount being installed improperly, which I fixed. Lol I'm good man, one is enough for me
@@accordinglyryan I always wanted better brakes a 6th gear and a small supercharger to put 6 or 7 lb of pressure to get 40 or 50 extra pounds of torque.. without the hassle, heat and expense of turbo charging. However, no one makes real performance equipment for the f-23a1 engine. All of the cold air intakes exhaust systems and suspension modifications are junk that ruin the good stock handling and ride of the car.
@@accordinglyryan I always wanted better brakes, a 6th gear, and a small supercharger to add about 40 or 50 lb of torque without the expense and heat and hassle of turbocharging, however no one makes a supercharger or any serious speed equipment for the f23a1 engine. Almost all of the stuff on the market for that generation Accord ruin the handling and ride of the stock car.
I can recommend Akebano asp465d super duty pads and Yokohama avid GT tires to fit on the stock rims ( which actually measure 6.5 x 15) for good overall four seasons performance. The car should pull 0 to 60 in 8 seconds flat with the car in proper tune with the tach hitting 6000 rpm in second gear. That as good as it gets.
The other swap that makes sense and is about the same work as the conversion you did is putting a K24 A1 engine and six speed manual trans from a early Acura TSX in the sixth generation. That costs about 3 to 4 thousand and about 12 hours but will give serious sleeper performance. I also change the coolant every summer, factory says every other year, to keep water pump lubricated...it typically seizes and breaks the timing belt on this interference engine not belt failure. And makes the radiators last. Im on my third catalytic converter....that hurts.
@@larryordine7542 Yeah, agreed. This car isn't built for speed lol. I daily a 2017 V6 Accord Coupe, I don't need this one to be fast. Not to mention engine swaps like that may as well be illegal here in Cali because of the legwork involved to certify it and such
@@accordinglyryan it's legal if the car meets emissions standards for the donor car. A 2005 Acura is a bit cleaner than a sixth gen Accord. My 99 is a NY LEV same as California CARB. Your automatic may be a ULEV and still must meet that standard. The Cat is bigger and the hp a bit less.

how much did this cost
I probably spent around $2500 total. Running donor car was $1200, parts from the dealer were $600 (engine mounts, gaskets/seals, flywheel bolts, fluids, etc), clutch kit, radiator & hoses from RockAuto were $300. Probably a couple small things I'm forgetting.
It can be done for cheaper but I replaced a lot of parts as a "while I'm in there"/preventative maintenance kinda thing.

@@gavingunn Yeah it's a pretty big job. Aside from all the mechanical stuff, there is some wiring involved to make everything work like factory as well, so you have to have an understanding of wiring diagrams, circuits and such. Some custom fab work is required to mount the clutch pedal also. If you're not experienced I wouldn't recommend attempting it lol.
