The first recall, & naturally it was Ford, who else could it be. John Dodge once wrote, around 1915/'16 or so. "Someday, people who own a Ford, are going to want an Automobile" This was funny because the Dodge Brothers owned a substantial shareholding in Ford at the time & received a dividend on every new Ford car sold, plus a profit margin on every new Dodge Brothers car sold. Dodge /Plymouth 426 Hemi [1964/71] 3. Dodge Gen 3 Hemi. All of them. That is only half the story. The real reason Ford wanted the "spanish moss" because he really wanted the wood that the Louisiana used to ship the moss in, that wood was call cypress which is water and rot resistant. Because buying the wood put right was more expensive, but having it used a a shipping container was cheaper.
Cypress at the time was in high demand for use in naval ships for their decks up until after WW2 before steel decks and non slip surfaces were commonly implemented. Mainly due to its rot resistance. My hometown area in south Florida was heavily logged for cypress way back then, spent a lot of time out on the historical logging/tram roads.

I can speak first hand on the bitting bugs, when camping we thought it would work good for bedding, Big mistake, had to take bleach baths for days to get rid of them
Henry Ford also owned the lumber operations to build the car bodies and frames. If he had just cooked that Spanish moss in a kiln for half an hour that wouldn't have been a problem. js
So it wasn't the Spanish Moss so much as it was those damned chiggers. Spanish Moss isn't the only habitat for chiggers. They prefer grassy or wooded areas near water.

Used as shipping buffer, then reused it for the seats .. sold the wood excess to his son in law for charcoal….❤
Henry also ordered bolts and nuts in wood boxes cut to a certain length so he could reuse the wood for flooring

Yes we have this crap everywhere.
The moss he got was from Richmond Hill ,Ga . It's right outside of Savannah, Georgia

It's funny that ford used to cut corners in the beginning, ain't nothing changed.
You can't see chiggers. red bugs are not chiggers.
