English Teacher. I'm a white American. If you're hinting that my race has something to do with my low rent, I've got two answers for you. #1 Giving white people discounts doesn't pay the landlords bills, and #2 My landlord didn't want a foreigner to move into his apartment in the first place. Let me explain, it's a fun story. I lived in my building previously, moved out for a year and returned wanting to rent out again. In our building of 100 apartments various owners/landlords own different individual apartments and rent them out. My building probably has 50+ individual apartment owners that own 1-2 apartments. Anyways, I checked 2 apartments and liked one in particular. Real Estate agent said it would be about $3000 deposit and $290 a month. (KRW to USD is always fluctuating and I'm posting current market conversion rate, forgive small discrepancies in price.) I told the agent I wanna pay $3600 down payment to get my rent down to $275. He said okay, but I wanna warn you. The owner doesn't like foreigners. Told the agent I wanna sit down with them face to face. We met a day later, he told me how a Chinese girl lived in that apartment before me... She ruined the place by excessively cooking with oil which covered a thin layer of oil on everything. I'd know, it took me 4 days of cleaning to make it liveable. Anyways I used my best Korean to tell them that I realize this is their apartment. I won't be knocking holes in their walls, plastering hello kitty stickers on the walls, painting weird colors, and on top of that I used to be carpenter so I'll naturally fix small broken things. Told them I come form a good family etc. Owner was very happy with what I had to say stood up, shook my hand and struck a deal. So despite my original post I opened up my calculator I'm paying $275 USD for a one room loft. I honestly don't know why people wanna live in Seoul. Sooooo expensive. I live by the beach for a third of the price. AMA, I'm happy to share.
In my country people make less than in Korea. But prices are still higher. So for me its super cheap. Minimal wage and medium wage in Korea is still a lot for me. Especially compared to how little some food cost. And how cheap can be eating outside 😞
