    Hoagy Carmichael’s 1930 classic. A jazz standard covered by more people than you could poke a stick at. Most are sterile and even more fall miserably short of capturing the heart and soul of this song. Who would have thought two rock virtuosos from Oz would deliver this. Mossy with some help from Walker absolutely nail it. In my humble opinion the best cover on RUclips.

    I'm 68 years old. I've been into rock all of my life. I can still remember being six years old, 1957; and hearing Elvis sing "Hound Dog" for the very first time. Comin' through the neighbors screen door in the tenement we lived in. Mesmerized! What I want to know, is why I never heard of Cold Chisel until now? I heard Jimmy sing Stone Cold on a Joe Bonamassa search and couldn't believe my ears! Absolutely incredible voice. What a band....

      @@roostersbays95 What a shame. I don't know much about the Australian story, apart from books and movies; no way to tell fiction from truth there. I remember a song from when I was a boy, about a "swagman" if I remember correctly. The intro was spoken by a man with a very thick accent. If I remember correctly there were all kinds of arcane references to things Australian. I loved to read, and had a very active imagination; that song really set me off. Words like digeree do, and "He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billie boiled..." couldn't get enough of it! Tell me about the "swagman", if you would. My grandmother lived through the great depression and would tell me stories about the "Hobos". They'd leave a mark on the door if you fed them, to let others know it was a safe place (no shotgun reception) to get a meal, or a days work, or whatever the story was. I could and did listen to her stories for hours. She'd make us both a cup of tea, and enchant me ...

      @ajo3085 4 года назад +3

      @@ericellquist7007 The swagman was basically our version of the hobo, very active during the Great Depression. The song you mention is Waltzing Matilda and there are plenty of versions on youtube, but one in particular you might be interested in has an animated video that will show you what some of those strange words reference with a comment at the end about what our modern life might have done to that Billabong. (Check out "Waltzing Matilda - an Australian Animation" here on youtube).
      If you'd like to read more Australian books, google "50 Must Read Australian Novels (The Popular Vote) - Booktopia" and as far as music goes, Cold Chisel's main songwriter Don Walker and a wonderful singer/songwriter named Paul Kelly have probably captured various aspects of life in Australia better than most in their lyrics.

I'm like Simon below - as a 14 year old - this version got me addicted to guitars and in particular Strats. I spent many years transcribing and perfecting this version - the transcribing was easy - the touch dynamics, changes in volume and attack were what really took up the time. Ian is a phenomenal player and I had the life-highlight moment of meeting him a couple of years back. I still don't think he knows how much he's touched so many people - musos and punters alike - with this arrangement. It's flawless and still captivates those new to it til this day. \m/ Cheers!

      @@johnkershaw3125 Part of the reason for that was that prior to them reforming for the Last Wave of Summer, Mossy only sang a couple of songs during their gigs and most of the attention was focused on Barnsey. Hard as it is to believe now, I saw pub shows in '83 where he only sang lead on Bow River and maybe on one of the covers like Something is Wrong or Knocking on Heaven's Door. There were plenty of people around in that era who didn't realise that Cold Chisel even had a second singer and by the time he got Matchbook out, a lot of people didn't realise he'd been in Cold Chisel. It was really only as their music continued to grow while they were disbanded that his vocal work started to get the attention it deserved.

    I have been enjoying the music of Cold Chisel since a friend introduced me to their fabulous Swingshift album in 1981. But this performance of Ian Moss is even way, way, way better than anything I can probably remember in live music recordings. So intense, soulful, virtuoso, well sounding... I am completely flashed! The piano is played beautifully, too. But Ian, your singing and playing is beyond comparison.

      Hey Özlem
      Thanks for your message man. Yes, magical is the word for all of this. From the moment Hoagy Carmichael and and his roommate Stuart Gorrell stayed up all night writing the song. Stuart Gorrell never wrote another lyric after that- but what a set of lyrics!
      And then, there is Ian Moss....

    wow, thanks so much for sharing. Ian Moss is a superb and underated guitarist, he has the most soulful voice and his playing is the same...was always a brilliant contrast to Jimmy Barnes rough, raw rock voice...he has always been one of my favourites :)

      Yes I have seen him with Chisel and also solo a few times. I totally agree with you and have even said to friends before that he is on eof my most favourite guitarists and very underated. He has a sound that i can recognise...i hear it and can say, that is Mossy..a unique soulfulness to his playing, in his sound. Love him :)

    • @eternalpictures1750

      Absolutely.
      Something about the Blues seems to be that the best people...are never recognised. Thats what keeps them so brilliant. But so gald that among people who appreciate, Mossy is legendary.

      @@roostersbays95 I do not understand what you are trying to say . Georgia was a big hit for Ray Charles in the early sixties . Cold Chisel played it
      live at many of their gigs , but I don't think they ever released a studio version . What does pre 1945 have to do with anything ?
      The point I was trying to make was that Ray Charles would have probably liked Cold Chisel's version .
