Steve Harris, bass/lyrics is actually quite the historian. He is why I developed my interest in historical events, and realized learning is COOL AND AWESOME!
Yeah... that's really perceptive of you Jayy... Truth be told, I didn't get that until way later in my own life. But I was a snot-nosed little punk that just turned teen when this came out !
@@mmjr0306 They get their lyrics and music based on true historical events. That's what makes Iron Maiden a completely separate genre all their own. 🤗💖
@@Heidishereandthere Hey Iron "Maiden", Thanks for the like!! You know, there's a lot of songs that aren't based on events like Twilight Zone from their second album but they didn't embody what Iron Maiden was. Plus the lead singer at the time Paul D'anno really wasn't the Heavy Metal singer that Bruce Dickenson is. We can talk about Iron Maiden all day hon!! They are metal.
It's a story about the atrocities of the American west. Incredible how the rhythm sounds like galloping horses!! Many Maiden songs tell stories about historical events. Ironic that the song is about such a dire topic, and yet the music sounds so happy and energetic 🔥🔥
This is one of my favorite songs!! I believe they were the 1st group that spoke of all the atrocities my people faced!! They killed over 100 MILLION of my ancestors. Those left were shoved onto reservations. Ripping families apart our women being raped
Good catch there. This song was years ahead of its time. Remember that Hollywood had been pushing “Cowboys and Indian” movies for decades and then along come the Maiden lads to show the story from both sides. The lyrics are powerful and thought provoking and the chorus can be taken from both perspectives - the invaders shouting at the Native Americans to run for their lives as they are hunting them down or the Native Americans shouting to their people to run to the hills for their safety. It’s amazing how a band of Brits can look in from the outside at an historical event in America and paint both sides so clearly. Up the Irons!!
It's really hard to believe that this song is nearly 40 years old, being released in 1982. Yep, it tells the story of what the British settlers did to the Native American Indians when they encountered them in the New World centuries ago. In a way it's a musical history lesson as are other songs by Iron Maiden. Pretty cool!
Oh yes, hun! You hit the nail on the head. You found the "heavy" part of heavy metal. The best metal songs pull you in with the instrumentals and then expose you to a new situation, a historical event, a new point of view, etc. I'll tell ya, as a Native American this song hits pretty close to home. Doesn't stop my head from banging to it. Don't feel guilty for getting caught in the music, that's what's supposed to happen. You pay your dollar, you take your ride. Hopefully you come out the other side more educated and a better person. Love ya, Jayy! Keep up the good work!
the band line up here is Bruce Dickinson, vocals Guitarists Steve Harris(bass),Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (lead guitars) & drummer Clive Burr (RIP).Looking at the background video,it apears to be from the '82 World Tour 'Beast on the Road',possibly one of the 'Beast over Hammersmith' concerts from 1982 Hammersmith,London.
Good reaction. The French Indian Wars of 1750s were what this heavy metal song seemed to refer too but Native Americans were exploited by everyone and that's history.
Probably Britain's most influential heavy metal act (which celebrated 45 years under the name - if not the same line-up - this Christmas just past) and one enjoying huge success at the time of this song. Replacement singer Bruce Dickinson (who now flies them around the world on a passenger jet he pilots himself!) really filled out the sound and gave them their first 'classic' line-up. And they're still at it today, with most of the same musicians.
I've been a Iron Maiden fan since this album "The Number of the Beast" 1982, and these types of songs are the essence of what heavy metal is all about. Iron Maiden in particular tells stories in the songs about history, good v evil, event concepts, personal tragedy, etc. This why bands like Iron Maiden and heavy metal in general is not for the faint at heart bc most people can't handle the lyrical content of what bands like Iron Maiden sing about. This video ALONE would not would be able to be made in today's PC/Cancel Culture blah blah blah BS world. I mean hell, it even refers to Native Americans as "Injuns", which if people DID know their history, it's what the pioneers called them back then. Iron Maiden are world class musicians and they've been around for damn near 40 years and show no signs of slowing down even though they are in their mid to late 50's. But bands like this don't sing about lollipops, rainbows and unicorns lol. If you really want to hear the essence of Iron Maiden go listen to the song "Rhime of the Ancient Mariner", off the Powerslave album 1984. It's their rendition of the Samuel Taylor Coolridge poem of the same name. It's a 13 min long song but it encompasses who Iron Maiden is as a band and how they tell stories in their songs.
I always thought that Phil Anselmo from Pantera , Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and Dio.. if they had done something together would have been so much our minds would have just been blown away lol
Back in the eighties this was my favorite iron maiden song which made it my favorite song but now in 2021 i could care less if i ever hear it again. It is what it is.
Iron Maiden is a British Heavy Metal band that has developed a reputation as being the "thinking man's Heavy Metal band", because of their more complex-than -average issues and subjects addressed in their music.
You should try the one called The Trooper which is about the Battle of the Light Brigade when the British were attacking the Russians mistakenly in Crimea in 1854.
Iron maiden is a genre all their own, and they get their lyrics and songs from historical events. Powerful stuff! Also, Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer, was an alter boy who sang in the church choir as a kid. His vocals are trained!
The well for Maiden and deep and strong. Number of the Beast, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, The Trooper, Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, Wasted Years.... You can't go wrong with more Maiden. Up the Irons.
Bruce Dickinson always said he was always trying to sing so the guy in the very last row in the very back of the arena filled with 100,000 screaming fans would still hear him without a microphone or amplifiers. That's why the man has lungs of steel. One of the all-time great front men in all of rock n roll, and it's a shame these guys aren't in the rock n roll hall of fame now.
It's estimated that nearly 95% of natives that died were from disease. Remainder was slavery and warfare. Also, remember that the natives were heavily involved among war themselves and committed acts of cannibalism, even among children
Steve Harris, bass/lyrics is actually quite the historian. He is why I developed my interest in historical events, and realized learning is COOL AND AWESOME!
That is a lesson that will make your whole life richer!
Steve Harris is an awesome storyteller!
Bruce Dickinson also has a college degree in history.
What it is , is not sugar coated history, its actual history.
A lot of heavy metal groups take on uncomfortable topics. Thanks for doing this.
That's exactly correct, the song is from both perspectives.
Yeah... that's really perceptive of you Jayy...
Truth be told, I didn't get that until way later in my own life. But I was a snot-nosed little punk that just turned teen when this came out !
@@paulwalsh2344 there was plenty of Iron Maiden songs i didn't quite get when they came out until years later.
Iron Maiden is a symphony of music. Classically written music. The notes rise and fall with emotion. The lyrics follow suit. Perfect metal.

Being from New Mexico and being part Native American this is one my favorite songs.
I've always wondered what native Americans thought of this. Good to hear it's liked.
They can't kill us all
As a Choctaw myself, I rock the hell out of this one and sing it too! It’s our history, and metal confronts it head on.
THERE are so many great Iron Maiden songs, you haven't scratched the surface yet.
Maiden are fantastic, all of their songs tell stories, and are indeed a history lesson !!!!!!!
Iron Maiden are not just heavy metal, They are historic metal. Most of their songs are like a history lesson. Just told in a very metal way :)

... sometimes ?...

Yes.
That is definitely one to check out.
The Trooper is never pronounced in the song.
Now I'm going to listen to iron maiden tomorrow at work awsome. One of many song that i love Ace is High my favorite thank you
Most Iron Maiden songs are either (mostly) from literature or have historical context.

When not touring with Iron Maiden the lead singer Bruce Dickinson still works as a commercial airline pilot....
uh sorry to inform you ,Bruce has retired from being a pilot!!
@Ken Bongaards Well, I did post this comment years ago, and God love him. Old Bruce ain't getting any younger.....
For the love of god, don`t let twitter find this song.
Loved it "That went left fast"😅😅😅
This was one of the songs that made me an Iron Maiden fan. They have a tremendous library of songs.
And that, right at the end, is why Bruce is called the Human Air Raid Siren.
Iron Maiden's and Judas Priest's classic signature was having two guitarists that would share solos or have like solo duels.
