Live action is a funny term to use because (ignoring the Computer-animated nature), nothing in that movie looked Live, nor was their much action in the shoots either. They just stand and stare most of the time, you'd almost get something more convincing out of just making an animatic or still comic panel presentation, since then you could just do fewer-more-detailed Shots and actually make them emote.

The reason why Jeremy Irons didn't reprise his role is because Jon Favreau had to miscast Chiwetel Ejofor for doing an african ethnic presentation. Chiwetel Ejofor is good as actor but not made to play Scar, his voice seems a little too young he would have done a better job voicing Simba because he seem to show up more emotions than Donald Grover.

The fact that it is in different art style as well as no darkness in plot didn't allow me to treat it as canon. No matter what Disney say it will never be canon. Artists can write fanfictions of their stories like Rowling did with The Cursed Child (allegedly it wasn't even Rowling but some ghost writter and she didn't read it before publishing).

One of the major criticisms of the live-action remakes, but especially this one, is that animation allows for characters to be even more expressive than in real-life (especially if the characters are non-human animals). This little animation demonstrates this point perfectly.
