The wheated BT Kosher lol, but the only bourbon that has reminded me of Weller is SoutherStar. I also get MM vibes on it. I saw this tic-tok and was pissed too!
I agree with you completely. Other suggestions that are findable and not outrageously priced are any of the benchmark lineup. In fact I think those are a good match and would like to see a blind comparison. Also ancient ancient age the 10 star really surprised me as being fairly similar to buffalo trace and would prob be a good alternative to the special reserve.
Finally, I will also say this, while you can't replace the flavor profile, while looking for an alternative you may find a flavor profile you enjoy even more by looking at other more available products from other distilleries. I think this is where many people chasing a bottle fall short. Especially since the flavor drift over the past 5 yrs or so as things have gone completely stupid on buffalo trace distilled products has really made the chase and price not really worth it. There are much better bottles out there you can actually enjoy.
I have a decent source for Weller at SRP. I've been able to score Special Reserve (have a bottle at the moment), been able to snag the 12 Year twice, and the Antique once... all at SRP. Tried the SiB at a bar last weekend (a pour for the price of a bottle of the 12 year 😂). It was very good, but not worth the secondary market price I see it for - just as every hard-to-find ridiculously marked-up Bourbon is not worth it.
Best wishes on speedy and complete recovery! Thanks for speaking the truth...each distillery has unique profiles...and many have the same mash bill...it is as you say. Different people, different resources, different techniques, and different environments...these all have an impact on the flavor profiles. Glad there are different tastes out there...because most days I want something different than what I had the day before.
I will give one cheat code that is VERY overlooked (mostly because it's discontinued). Belle Meade Reserve. This 108.3 proof bottle is actually a high rye mash bill but comes across as pretty red fruit heavy like Weller 107. It's got a slightly nutty mid palate but not like Heaven Hill or Beam products. It's very faint and actually compliments the honey, caramel, and fruit notes. Weller Full Proof can have a little bit of that profile but it mostly disappears when proofed down for the 107, 12 year, and SR bottles. Yes, I'm recommending something discontinued BUT it's still very available online and in many retailers. My local Total Wine just marked down bottles they have had on shelf for over a year to $35. Maybe the best $35 I've spent on whiskey in the past year (and I got a Weller 12 for $35 in a raffle).
About time someone said it. I watched one an alternative to eagle rare and they were just all 10 years old. The first one was Russel’s 10 which is nothing like eagle rare.
I would venture to assume most people out there can't pick out the Weller in a BT blind lineup. I also think there is similar stuff out there, that may have a little different profile, but are close enough in experience to Weller to recommend. I personally pick out a lot of the same notes on Bardstown Origin white label. Good video though. Hope your recover is going well!
If I can't find Weller SR, I smile and remember that it really isnt that good, or because I simply just wasn't looking... because it really isn't that good.
When I blind any Weller against another wheated bourbon, it's not because I think they're similar, it's to find out which wheated bourbon I actually prefer once I can't see the label. I agree that it's not fair to call other wheated bourbons alternatives to Weller(s) because they're too different as you said. I think folks should regularly do blinds to find out what they REALLY like especially when it's an allocated bottle v. a bottle that's easier to get. Great content. Good luck on your surgery. Cheers!
I do enjoy the Ben Holladay BiB soft red wheat, but I'll take the Horse Soldier wheated barrel strength or the small batch all day long. The Antique 107 is a good bottle at MSRP.
Such a great video. I never go blipitiby-blah-blah-blipitiby-blah blah unless I am in line at Taco Bell. Hope you are doing great with your procedures Stud and I cannot wait for the April release from BK. I need my Porter release!!
So glad you did this video. As a Buffalo trace fan, it sucks that everything they make is hard to find, but there’s a reason for that. Their products have a unique fruit forward flavor profile that you really can’t find from other distilleries. I’ve always hated the logic that other wheaters from other distilleries are the most similar because they aren’t. So shut it tik Tok ers. Just go out and hunt.
@adhdwhiskey You are dead on with this video. I've always found Buffalo Trace and Weller SR to be pretty comparable bottles. I prefer the Buffalo Trace (it's actually my favorite sub 100 proof bottle that comes out from Sazerac not named Sazerac) to Weller. I've done multiple blinds with EHT smb, Buffalo Trace, Blanton's, Weller Sr, Weller 12, and Hancocks Reserve and Buffalo Trace wins pretty much every time BUT the lineups are all very similar. I've thrown Makers into that lineup and it was very noticeable. Makers 46 is more comparable, to me at least. That French Oak offers some more comparable tasting notes. If you like Weller, cool. If you have never owned Weller or any other Saz bottle I recommend being patient. Don't overpay because the bottles are hard to find. Weller SR is a bottom shelf whiskey that is made to be mixed.
Hey Matt, If you want an alternative that actually Tastes like weller full proof or 107, just do a 50/50 blend of maker’s mark cask strength and yellow stone single barrel private select. Very, very close flavor profile. I dare you to try it 😉. Just subbed! Love your ridiculous, funny commentary. If you want a super close alternative to weller 12yr, blend 50/50 Eagle rare 10yr and Pendleton midnight. Try and find the differences.
Dude you’re funny. Factual information though and only you can put this into context the way you do. First congratulations on your blend that appears to be a hit. Continued success at Barrel king. Second you’ll do fine with the surgery it’s just like flipping burgers to these dentist I had open heart surgery and though it was scary when it was over it was the best thing I could have done. I feel great now. Enjoy!!
I’ll take the tick toker’s advice over some tik tok twatwaffle’s every time. Thanks Matt and GL on the forthcoming procedure. Will drink to your good health this week.
I have been called for 3 different Pappy's in the last 2 months. Build you relationships with Local Stores! Good Luck with you surgery and Implants, Brother!
I did win 2 in the last year. First was 12 lot b, then just a couple weeks ago 10yr. Last one i want is 15. Im not really interested in the 20 & 23. Its aged too long. Im not a fan of tannic oak/oak tannins. I like sweet oak.
Want an alternative to pappy 12yr lot b? I know its not the most desirable one, but its pretty good. Its alternative isnt exactly cheap, but its fairly/some what easy to find, and taste exactly like it. Willet 8yr wheated, the black bottle. I shit you not. My brother has the willet, i have the lot b. We blinded them, could not tell the difference.
@ADHD Whiskey Matt, why you calling me out? 😂😂😂😂 JK! Great to see your doing well, everything here in West Michigan is good, just need you back around here. That would be a Blast!
Weller is an interesting one. Red/Blue is good, Black is terrible, and all are very over priced. People love drinking what they see on TV though and BT's advertise game is on point. EHT SR is a different mash bill but one could easily argue that is not truly a BT product either.
Never enjoy hearing anyone called an idiot. Hope the work on your teeth goes well! Lucky chance to start over! Yes women do appreciate guys taking care of their skin! My husband uses something else but the outcome is what matters! The Weller Single Barrel is my preference. I can’t find it anymore.
Good luck with your surgery, hope everything goes smooth and easy!! Also you nailed it with the Weller alternatives and that fake breasts are exactly the same as dental implants 😂😂

My favorite alternative to Weller is definitely Weller
Thank you for the video. Finally someone who really understands alternatives. Love the content and don’t sweat the small stuff!!!
I would say if you can't find pappys or weller, just grab a bottle of laphroaig 10, virtually identical 😉
I’ll take the Laphroaig. Good stuff.
❤ I love Laphroaig. My go to scotch.
@@berkeleythompson Just got the Laphroaig 10 CS batch 13 the other day. Good stuff.
@@roscoepcoltrane23 I am hunting a cask strength myself. Love that smoky peaty flavor.
@@berkeleythompson I got lucky as I’m in Bourbon land. Try the Ledaig 10 some time. I just got one and it’s excellent.
good luck with the operation brother
The wheated BT Kosher lol, but the only bourbon that has reminded me of Weller is SoutherStar. I also get MM vibes on it. I saw this tic-tok and was pissed too!

Great video. BT does something to Weller that nobody what does
Pretty smart suggestions there, Matt. Good luck on your surgery
Good luck Mr Porter, or should I say I hope it went well and I wish you a smooth recovery. Cheers Mr Porter
Very educational. Thank you!!
Great info Matt, this is such an overblown issue with so many, if they don’t listen, can’t help em, stay healthy Matt
This is a good take that I haven't actually seen a video on before.
Excellent review. Thank you.
Buffalo Trace has a great whiskey lineup. got a bottle of Eagle Rare I need to pop open and try

Add blade and bow, and bowman brothers in there maybe as well. Not positive but if memory serves me they are similar in profile to the buffalo trace
Finally, I will also say this, while you can't replace the flavor profile, while looking for an alternative you may find a flavor profile you enjoy even more by looking at other more available products from other distilleries. Good video. Thanks man. Hope all went well with your procedure.
Hope everything goes well.
You make a good point. I wonder how some of the Benchmarks would stack up. Top Floor, Bonded and Single Barrel are pretty damn good.
Best wishes on speedy and complete recovery!

Get well soon Matt! Cheers🥃🥃
This is big important. I really appreciate you taking flavor into account for once as opposed to just the recipe. You’re a dawg big guy.
Agreed. What about Bowman products, which are supposedly Buffalo Trace distillate? Good luck with your surgery.
This is great. Every single buffalo trace product i've tried tastes almost the same to me. I'm not crazy!!!
Yeah. The BT profile is too distinctive for there to be an alternative.
I will give one cheat code that is VERY overlooked (mostly because it's discontinued). Belle Meade Reserve. Watching your videos makes my want to drink whiskey ... that's a compliment 😁
Spot on. I’m happy you cleared this up. Because I was also led astray by this same information. I got the makers mark cask strength 😂😂😂
If I can't find Weller SR, I smile and remember that it really isnt that good, or because I simply just wasn't looking... because it really isn't that good.
Weller Antique 107 is one my top 5 favorites. Just wish there was a way to get it at a decent price.
Great video 👍

Nice vid Matt.
I couldn’t agree with you more
Good luck your procedure
That’s one of your best videos

100% correct.
But what distillery gives you Buffalo Trace vibes?
I thought Woodinville gave me some strong cherry notes.
Any others?
So glad you did this video. As a Buffalo trace fan, it sucks that everything they make is hard to find, but there’s a reason for that. That last sentence is what I've been banging on about for years. I don't get the hype. There's a reason it has a screw top and a low MSRP.

@@ADHDWhiskey If you think you can handle it, Portski… 😗😮
Good luck on the surgery, brother.
Makes a lot of sense!
Matt, I agree 💯
@ADHD Whiskey - WTWT you missed the closest one... What about the BT Kosher Wheated??? 😉👍
Oh dang! The "real" alternative!
I think thats harder to find than weller
The sound effects at 6:20 reminded me of the Plants vs Zombies guy… then I realized you look like him too 🤣
Best alternative to Weller Full Proof is Weller Antique 107...
You are right. Nothing else needs to be said

Makes sense to me!
I totally agree here. However, Matt, please try a blind between WSR and David Nicholson,(white label). The only difference I found was the proof
You need too check the YEAST. 😮

Want an alternative to pappy 12yr lot b? I know its not the most desirable one, but its pretty good. Bit weller SR and Green River wheated are indistinguishable from each other.
Buffalo Trace (in my opinion) is most definitely the closest secondary option (for Weller SR at least)
Who else knows exactly who the parkour guy is that he talks about in the intro KEKW
Hope all is well. Don't sweat the petty stuff and pet the sweaty stuff.
Speedy Recovery Matt!!
@ADHD Whiskey Matt, why you calling me out? 😂😂😂😂 JK! Great to see your doing well, everything here in West Michigan is good, just need you back around here. That would be a Blast!
Totally agree. In my opinion most BT products tastes too similar to justify having so many different bottles from them
I endorse the argument of this video. I've always said that Eagle Rare is the closest alternative to most of the Weller line.
Also, perhaps, John J Bowman, which is derived from Buffalo Trace distillate.
Matt! Any mattmadness this year???
Yes! In May
