What they probably ended up doing though was train on similar data sets that Open AI uses: like you know, the internet. You probably have heard of it. And in the past year or so, a ton of content publicly on the internet are ChatGPT outputs, which yes was most likely used by DeepSeek for training given that it's you know, public data. Now, all this doesn't really matter, since DeepSeek was able to create a product that is better in a lot of areas than ChatGPT. It beat ChatGPT in it's own game, for arguably less funding. I've been watching this and have thought (over simplifying) we have a similar dynamic to the rollout of the "internet" within the context of phone level technology. Remember the days of CNBC and Bloomberg asking "how are they going to monetize it?..." With AI, here at the beginning it is more of a gimmick than anything. Oh yes, as it evolves, it will do ever more practical valuable things for the regular person, but everybody is still trying to figure out what to do with it exactly. AND so, all the effort is in building out the infrastructure and ever better chips and chips and chips and chips and data centers needing ever more power and more and more and more of it. The course was/is? clear. And right now the almost complete and utter concentration and focus upon teh the NVIDIA chips forming the core of the effort at the high end performance capability wise. AND then oops? Someone figures out how to do it cheap and easy. Uh oh... I'd move out from under that NVIDIA house of cards there and the subsidiary infrastructure sitting on top of it... Now its a bit early to say if it really can really do what it claims, think cold fusion, but even if it functions "well" at a lower level, the economies of scale will tell the tale... The real value will be a level of performance that makes the everyman at work and play and home and business do what they need and want to do easily. There will be the high level needs like sorting out ICD10 and Health Information Exchange (HIE) data warehouses and turning them into usable functional data sources for analysis etc., but the need for super high level, close to sentient if not there AI, will function in a similar fashion to supercomputers of today.
