Yeah and most Importantly *DO NOT FORGET TO REPLACE IF YOU EVER REMOVE THE GRIP!* Many, many people have fried their DSLR's after forgetting that rubber piece, because if any amount of water gets into those electrical contacts, you're camera is as good as dead. I had a friend who lost his new D850 due to forgetting that little $10 rubber piece, so even if you lose it, BUY ANOTHER ONE, lol.
Ashutosh Pradhan 2:24 he removes a rubber gasket piece off from the bottom of the cameras So you don’t lose this piece Nikon has a spot for it on the battery grip
The battery grip is also known as a vertical grip. For people shooting a lot of portrait shots it is really a lot more comfortable. In that case the extra frame and battery life are bonusses. Enjoy your grip!
Just a bit of ancillary info on the D850 and frames per second; in Silent Live View Photography (Mode 2) and image area cropped to DX (24X16) the D850 will give you 30 fps with CH dialed in. And this is without the vertical grip and the EN-EL18B battery.
Have you tried it with only 4 AA batteries? I mean without the en-el15 inside the body, can the camera even be turned on on such low power? I had the D700 + MB-D10, the D800/810+ MB-D12 in the past, and they all shoot on 8 AA batteries. I have the D850 + MB-D18 now but I left the AA carrier in the box. I certainly will test it myself later. But it's really hard to believe for me if the camera can work on just 4 AA batteries!
Rex Linn Good question. Camera let’s you select the order of the batteries but not sure if it would work on it’s own. Very limited runtime would be my guess. I never used the AA carrier in the past on any of my battery grips. I also had the D700 combo as well.
Still wrong, as all of the MB-D's with battery option it is designed to work with 8xAA's (stated in the MB-D18s Manual). I am pretty sure it won't work with 4 (the MB-D10 on my D300 doens't, identical construction). The runtime on 8 AA batteries is excellent also but quiet heavy..
there are non nikon battery grips that cost a bit less instead of the 300+ I think they are under 200. I would probably buy the copy as I've no real need for the extended battery that often but the grip at times is nice with the extra shutter button. Some second party grips come with a wireless remote shutter trigger. OF course if you want to get faster frame rates you might look into the mirrorless
So to confirm, the battery grip comes with the grip itself, the EN-EL15 battery and the holder for that battery. If I want to increase the frame rate to 9fps I would have to purchase separately the EN-EL 18 battery as well as the holster for that battery?
You've made a mistake in the AA tray it hold 8 AA batteries not just 4 cause it has 2 sides to it and for not loosing the rubber cap protector for your contact socket that is what that depression in the middle of your grip is for (storing your rubber cap.
My two cents into your demo is that if you do not have a need for 9-FPS shooting? Then, it is not worth the premium price of 2-Frames Per Second. For walking around doing hand-hold shooting ? The MB-D18 is worth its weight in gold. I have the MB-d18 and I have purchased an EN-El15A battery and I get a lot of "extended time" with the regular battery installed. I shoot a lot of still-images and for that? It's more economical for me to purchase an extra EN-EL15A so that I can my charging system to remain consistent for ease of replacement and travel. However having a twin battery charger (NIKON or otherwise) makes great sense for this grip... Especially when I am shooting in my home and having both batteries ready to go with or without grip...Typically, I have the D850 on a tripod and at such instances, I have found little use for the battery grip because I can easily slide an EN-EL15A IN/OUT the battery compartment even with the an L-Bracket installed...
Minor issue but it could affect, in the D500 the screen shows you have in RAW+JEPG and the D850 is only RAW, so the d500 is saving two files and it might suffer on fps. if you have an SD card in either one, those are slower so it will suffer to save 9 or 10fps. it is better just to have it saving or shooting RAW only to XQD, or at least not RAW+JPEG.. (I guess JPEG only might be faster, but who wants JPEGS with these cameras)
The Nikon D850 seems like a great camera, excelling in so many areas. But this issue about having to spend $700 on a battery pack just to get the fps from 7fps to 9fps is a game changer as far as I am concerned. I don't believe any of the Canon models have this requirement. So I question whether if it's the higher amperage the extra larger battery could provide (unlikely), or possible that the installation of the larger battery trips a hardware switch inside the camera to allow for the higher fps, so that Nikon can reap in more money for the "upgrade"..
It too bad, but true. Marketing for profit in the end. Like they should have included the FTZ adapter with the Z6 / Z7 originally instead of charging us, even with their "discount" for new buyers.
You have the BL-6 battery chamber in the description. For the MBD18 folks need the BL-5 (like said in the video) battery chamber instead of the BL-6. Nice video though
Thanks a lot for the good video... I have just purchase this battery grip MBD18...And I was wondering if you have tried the WASABI Battery with this Battery Cap?
MrTanker10a Thanks, no I haven’t tried non OEM batteries. I’ve heard some bad things about 3rd party batteries not holding their charge or not accurately communicating battery levels.
le disappointed frogue In terms of using an external battery grip like the D850, there is no boost in speed. I believe the D7100 tops out at 6fps. The grip will allow you to extend your shooting time via extra battery or AA power option.
Battery grips over the years have been very similar. It is strange though how some increase FPS while others don't. In some cases the increase is also different. On my D300s the grip takes the FPS from 7 to 8. On my my D700, which uses the same grip, has an increase from 5 to 8FPS. I believe it is to do with the power consumption of the camera rather than mechanics. Also, I get the increase in FPS using the EN-EL4 battery or the AA NIMH rechargeables. BTW: I am also waiting for a charger to arrive so I can use the bigger battery. Good stuff!
The only reason the AAs don't increase the frame rate in the D850 is because nikon wants you to buy the D5 battery. 8 AA batteries put out the same voltage as the EnEl18.
Hi again. On my body, I have the "Sub-selector center" set for 'center-weighted metering', but when I attach the MB-D18, it doesn't do the same thing. In f10 assignments, Sub selector is set to "same as camera sub selector" but it's not working. Any thoughts on this? Thanks again.
Gary Fallowes Could be a strange “feature” when certain menu options and accessory combinations are used? My 4K option greeted out when certain functions assigned. See my other video about it if you are curious.
With the AA Batteries that holder actually holds 8 x AA’s not 4 as you show here. I am pretty sure that configuration does bump the frame rate up. I do know that because with my Nikon MB-D10 fitted with 8 x AA ENELOOP Batteries it pushes my NIKON D300 fitted with the MB-D10 from 6 frames to 8 frames a second.
I miss the grip from my D90... the grip was almost like an L shape and it went up into the battery slot on the camera, but the grip held two batteries. It was nice to be able to swap both batteries at once without having to take off the grip
Thanks for this. I’ve got both D850 and D500 so I can shoot 7 or 10fps respectively. Would be good to shoot 9fps at the 46mp on the D850 but can you tell me how the buffering works? The buffer on the D500 runs for ages and is unrestricted even without a battery grip you’re getting 10fps and you won’t stop. From my experience of the D850 it does stop to buffer quite quickly. To be honest, that’s probably partly to do with the fact I’m not using XQD. But what about the actual camera buffer? If you’re using the D850 with the grip and added battery to get 9fps...what’s the buffer like? Having said all that...it’s a lot of money for 2fps extra,. If it took it up to 12 or 14 it might be more of a draw for me. At the end of the day you could always just carry an antra standard battery in your pocket rather than pay all that money for the grip. Although the portrait button setup is nice. Thanks.
Both cameras can shoot 200 images in JPG mode before the buffer fills up. The D850 buffer fills up at 51 images when shooting in the 14 bit RAW whereas the D500 can handle 200 in 14 bi RAW as I understand it.
MB-D18 holds one battery, but the camera can hold the second battery; the grip only uses the EN18 for increased frame rate, no increase if using the EN15 in it.. Some have had success with a less expensive Vello grip; I got a mint true Nikon grip at a discount, so that sure helped. I use fast frame rate for motorsport races....
Question: You still have to get the battery out of the main body to charge it...correct? Meaning one needs to take off the grip every time? The 18b(c) battery doesn't charge the original batter...correct? Thx
Gary Fallowes You have to remove all batteries to charge them on the external charger. They don’t charger internally or each other as far as I can tell.
Batteries cannot be recharged while in the camera. And one will not charge the other. So yes, you need to remove the body battery to recharge it. If you use from the grip battery first, and recharge it before the camera needs to swap to the internal, you won't need to remove the grip very often. I will pull the body battery out and recharge it once it drops down into the 80%'s over time. And it's not a big deal to remove the grip and put it back on.
vishnu sasidharan BL-5 and 6 must be the same item since they sell the BL-5 together with the grip and battery. I could not find the BL-6 when looking to buy the kit.
i too searched for the chamber, the thing is it cost too much to get the battery, chamber and charger.but if we use the enel18 battery with d500,the backup will be way too hgher than the enel15 battery in the grip
SamStunner Saxzo It is not automatic. You have to slide the switch over to “light” to activate it. It also lights up the top LCD display panel as well as the buttons.
I want to tell you that this experiment missed critical consideration of D500's shutter mode. Actually, as your video shows, the D500's burst speed is varied(e.g., 5:23 and 5:29 sounds different interval of shutter sound) by some issues(i.e., Flicker reduction option is on, attached lens's VR is on; that 200-500mm f/5.6 VR does have this feature as well). You should make clear that both options are off to show a genuine result of D500's shutter speed. On the other hand, you can also check and say the burst speed by measuring the distance between peaks response to each shutter released at the sound graph of this video. I've checked and compared my D850, D500(CL mode set to 9 fps for comparison) and D4s(set CL mode at 9, 10 fps for crosscheck). All bodies were experimented with front cap (not the lens), and flicker mode was off. They sound nothing different, although this video does not. Please check your experimental environment again and renew the information.
iv used the d850 for 9 months with nikon grip .. i have the en el18 batteries and chargers .. no bl-5 yet as iv never used 7fps let alone 9 😀😀 fair enough if the battery lasts longer but 9fps for wildlife is toooo noisy
I haven't done much off camera flash as of late, however, I have used speedlites off camera, but would like to get some Xplorer or Broncolor portable rigs.
Question, is the EN-EL18b battery chargable when it's sticks in the MB-D18 battery grip? I do got a brand new EN-EL 18b from my sold D4s. Yes I switched to the D850, and I do NOT regret it, the D850 simply the best DSLR ever imho. I sold the charger with the D4s, and kept the EN-El18b for using into the MB-D18 :)
Couple questions if you still around. Where did purchase the battery for $150 and the adapter piece for $25? And what camera are you using to film with? Great video btw, thanks.
Sandisk Extreme Pro SD cards are quite commonly used (they're also the only SD cards I use) and can be written to at 10fps, however, the buffer will be smaller. If I set my D500 to write only to my Lexar XQD card, I get 190 shots at 10 fps, then it slows down (I know they claim 200 shots but that's not what I get and 190 is more than enough). If I set it to write only to the SD card, I get about 45 shots at 10fps, then it slows down.
That's ridiculous, to have to spend $700 to get the D850 to click at 9fps. Can't understand why the standard battery cannot drive the shutter fps at the same speed. The shutter mechanism does not consume that much power.
I have D850 , i am thinking of either buying the grip to make it 9fps, or buy a d500 and have 10 fps and a back up camera , what do you think is better?
@@bhuboydeleon3699 I am going through the same right now. D810's 5 fps are not cutting it for wildlife. I am not sure whether to go D850+grip or D500 for the backup body. What did you decide? What are your thoughts in hindsight? Thanks.
You're literally paying $220 for a battery that has three 18650 cells. Even if you're paying the massive premium of $20 per cell, you're still only $60. We all know Nikon isn't paying anywhere near that for their cells so I can't see why anyone would waste their money on a Nikon battery. Aftermarket work just as well at a fraction of the cost. When I had my D810, the Nikon grip always lost connection with the camera when you would hold it by the grip only. I wish Nikon would do a better job with the connection.
This is a bad review. As already mentioned by others, the AA carrier holds 8 single batteries, not 4, there is a place on the grip to store that rubber cover so you can't lose it, you could just have removed the EN-EL18b-battery to slow the camera down again, and there are quite a few things you could - and should - have mentioned, e.g. that more fps is not the only factor, also, it greatly reduces the time the mirror flaps back (actually by around 30% if I am not mistaken), you could have compared the watt-hours of the different options (eneloops, EN-EL15a, EN-EL18b), etc. I really appreciate it when people make reviews, but they should not be … well, wrong.
mediocre man Indeed, I did correct myself but if it makes you feel better about posting, well good on you. I look forward to your posting content yourself.
Man your really not prepped for this review, your fumbling all over the place.. and looking for words and missing A LOT of details...You know the basic EN-15, Nikon battery only fits one on the grip tray because the body has a battery already inside it . so that makes 2 EN-15s already...Why would you want 2 batteries on the grip then???? If the grip battery try for EN-15 tray took 2 batteries like the Canon grips do. then the Nikon would have 3 EN15 batts installed...... With the Canon 5D and others, , you need to remove the fixed body battery. cause the grip's attachment connector slides into the camera battery cavity, then the grip fits the 2 batteries.....I realized your error and I don't even own a Nikon yet..
Man, you really feel better now? LOL Two batteries in the grip in addition to the one already in the body would give you that extra runtime instead of the space wasted in the grip that could possibly fit another one in it.
@@LEXPIX Feeling great.. thanks for asking..I guess you shoot 18 hours days.. ffs, 2 batts last at least 12 hours a full wedding day.. over 3000 photos and the batts are still not nearly empty..a third would be extra weight for nothing.. and pretty ridiculous..
You know, at some point I wish people would just stop making ad hoc on the fly videos, which are incomplete, not done to high standards, so the channels have better content. Please, if you are going to make another video, can you go about it in a slightly more scientific and organized fashion? As is, your video is of very little value and misleading. As mentioned below, in other comments, there is a place on the vertical grip (you failed to show) to store that dinky rubber piece. Second, all you had to do to let us hear the difference in assumed frame rate was take out the battery from the grip (fast), not remove the entire grip. Third, you neglected to reveal the real cost of upgrading to the larger battery by leaving out the fact that you also have to buy the $300+ dollar charger for the battery making the entire upgrade $900+ for most people (unless they already own the charger (in which case they probably own the battery too). Fourth, charge the battery before you "test" it. Fifth, if you aren't going to actually clock count the fps (but just let us hear the difference), it seems like you would have at least revealed, under the best conditions (after listing what those are), how quickly the buffer fills up at both frame rates. Clearly, if you get 9 fps and you are shooting at 14 bit raw, and you only get 18 shots before the buffer fills, then this might be a reason not even to consider going to higher fps. Fps acquisition is only important if the buffer speed can keep up. I'll stop here because it's clear where I'm headed.
dance2jam UNBELIEVABLE... This video was so close to being a JOKE. Ill equipped with knowledge, unprepared to present, continuously fumbling, and yet using just four AA batteries in a chamber that takes eight. “Come On!!!” As stupid as I am I was able to figure out this guy don’t know Bo and he don’t know shit either!
dance2jam holy crap, a man makes a video and get clobbered. Crazy world anymore. It answered a couple questions ai had. Much appreciated. I don’t need 9 FPS but the grip came as a freebie with my 850 purchase. I will use it at different times when I feel the need. Thanks for taking the time to make the video my friend.

THANKYOU...
You’re welcome.
It also balances the camera a bit better if you have bigger lens' on.
Ron A. Bolton I agree, it does balance it out nicely.
mindboggling why they didn't allow 2 standard 15 type batteries to go in these
Good review. Can you charge grip with USB cord ?
No, not to my knowledge.
Thanks for the video !!
You are welcome. Thanks for taking the time to leave an appreciative comment.
You an put the En El 18b battery in D500. That's why it's battery grip cost this much. I think the the battery chamber is BL-6
vishnu sasidharan BL-5 and 6 must be the same item since they sell the BL-5 together with the grip and battery. I could not find the BL-6 when looking to buy the kit.
i too searched for the chamber, the thing is it cost too much to get the battery, chamber and charger.but if we use the enel18 battery with d500,the backup will be way too hgher than the enel15 battery in the grip
Very interesting
Does the buttons light up when using in dark ? Thanks
I've photographed snow monkey's at Jigokudani yaen koen with my D500 at 10fps and they didn't react at all. YMMV
Imagine a D4 shutter sound..
😃
Hi what kit do you use for your off flash camera.
Hope to hearing from you thank you.
Good quetion. I have not had a need to try it yet.
no, you need to take it out for charging. However there are very cheap chargers (compared to nikon) like wasabi
I need on of them, any one help me?
Which is best Nikon d850 or Sony ar7 iii please help
Manish Kumar They are two different types of cameras. Each has their place, but I’m impartial to Nikons.
Couple questions if you still around. Where did purchase the battery for $150 and the adapter piece for $25? And what camera are you using to film with? Great video btw, thanks.
I bought those Nikon branded items around the holidays online at a poplar online retailer. I filmed this on Sony RX 100 MK V.
You have to change battery setting to get 9fps
Thanks for the video! Did you notice any increase in the AF reactivity?
Riccardo Cicuto I did not notice.
Add to that the cost of memory cards to write fast enough that 10fps is even worth using.
The shutter mechanism does not consume that much power.
msbrownbeast Agreed. I think that’s how they get us to spend more money on accessories.
I have D850 , i am thinking of either buying the grip to make it 9fps, or buy a d500 and have 10 fps and a back up camera , what do you think is better?
Tagalog Movies I would buy the grip unless you need a backup, then maybe consider the FF D750.
What i needed is more fps for wildlife , especially birds in flight
@@bhuboydeleon3699 I am going through the same right now. D810's 5 fps are not cutting it for wildlife. I am not sure whether to go D850+grip or D500 for the backup body. What did you decide? What are your thoughts in hindsight? Thanks.
@@brunovitsantos I bought the D500 for wildlife photos, and now have the z7 for everything else
@@bhuboydeleon3699 In retrospect, do you think that was the correct choice?
you should redo this video because 8AA's work very well. leaving this as is will not help your subscription rate...
Nair Byad It was amended in the description, but thanks for the advice.
Time stamp
D850
Continuous high 4:05
7fps 4:25
D850 9fps 5:19
D500 10fps 5:29
Trés bonne démonstration
Sounds pretty darn fast to me. Who would need more than 9fps?
Andrew Neal Sports photographers mostly I’m guessing.
LEXPIX true. At 45MP, I bet this camera fills up memory cards left and right at 9fps.
Andrew Neal Sure does. I use it sparingly if shooting high speed continuous FPS.
Can you tell me if the EN EL 18A will work in this as the B will?
Thank you.
Gewglesux It should of dimensions are similar. May have slightly less capacity compared to the newer one.
Thank you..might have to look into this!
850 arrived finally... the batteries both work thanks!
Awesome!
Ordered 2 more. The 18"c" are now available.
You were too close the camera while filming, could hardly see the Nikon Camera clearly
4:05 9 fps
4:25 7 fps
Just for that smal difference 900 € i think its better to buy a telephoto lens
8fps . but the battery lasts 5000 shots
I don't like the shutter sound of D850...it's too loud.
It is, but there is a "quiet" mode too.
The battery grips are a bargain second hand.
Sounds like an machinegun
Haha indeed.
Well, mishaps can happen, this review is factually wrong, delete it. What of it?
Wow you're to rich sir! After ten years for me.
Can your tiny hands handle the camera? Lol
@@LEXPIX Feeling great.. thanks for asking..I guess you shoot 18 hours days.. ffs, 2 batts last at least 12 hours a full wedding day.. over 3000 photos and the batts are still not nearly empty..a third would be extra weight for nothing.. and pretty ridiculous..
making a video about a product and stating wrong information.. one job..
Fabian Keppler WOW, I think I corrected myself. Why don’t you post your own and correct me then?
I'll stop here because it's clear where I'm headed.
dance2jam Wow, calm down dude and make your own videos and show us how it’s done.
dance2jam UNBELIEVABLE...
You are the viewer I fear. :-)
dance2jam holy crap, a man makes a video and get clobbered. Crazy world anymore. It answered a couple questions ai had. Much appreciated. I don’t need 9 FPS but the grip came as a freebie with my 850 purchase. I will use it at different times when I feel the need. Thanks for taking the time to make the video my friend.
Why is your voice......
Why are you..like..breathing deeply or some......
The rubber protectoe piece goes into the top of the battery pack so yor dont loose it!
