Hawthorn Mall looks like a nice place. Quite a few Iowa malls have either Sears or Younkers stores unfilled. It's about 6 years since some of them closed. I wonder what some of them will do.

My girlfriend and I used to hang out here fall, 1978. She lived nearby in the small town of Gages Lake, I lived in Elgin.

Here in the Detroit area and the Eastland Mall in Harper Woods has been demolished. They are Building a Class A Warehouse and Distribution Center on the site of the old Eastland Mall in Harper Woods. Also the old Northland Mall in Southfield has been demolished. They are Building Apartments and restaurants and retail on the site of the old Northland Mall in Southfield. Now the latest news about Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights. Lakeside Mall has an abandoned Sears Store and the only anchors are J.C.PENNEY and Macy's left in Lakeside Mall and what stores are in Lakeside Mall. The City of Sterling Heights wants to demolish Lakeside Mall and the abandoned Sears Store. J.C.PENNEY and Macy's will remain as separate stores and will get remodeled and once Lakeside Mall and Sears get demolished and redevelopment will take place on the Lakeside Mall and Sears Store sites. Lakeside Mall and Sears will be demolished in 2024. This is the latest news from the old malls in the Detroit area.

I used to work right by this mall for PNC Mortgage right after Sears had sold their mortgage business in the early mid 1990's. I also worked in Hawthorn Mall for a Christmas season in early 2000. It was always a beautiful and busy mall. Not too large and not too small. Unfortunately with the decline in malls, redevelopment is probably their only savior. I would also assume that the location of the mall and the well to do area is the only saving grace from this mall being completely torn down. It is close to other towns and many businesses. Also the location of the mall is ideal as it is close to 294/94 and other major roads in Lake county. I lived in Lake county for over 5 years and the sprawl and lack of major roads and expressways through the county make transportation horrendous. This location is ideal because it is more towards the east side of Lake county. I am glad to see it redeveloped because Vernon Hills is a nice town to live and work.

From what I understand, at least the first 1/3 of the mall will get torn down and the Dave & Busters will get moved. I spoke with the owner of the Sbarro a couple months ago and he confirmed that the food court was getting torn down and they were getting moved to another part of the mall. The AMC will stay where it's at, so I have no idea how they're going to work the layout. The apartments being built sound like they're going to be crazy expensive and luxurious. I'm not sure how well this reinventing of the mall is going to work.

Wow the apartments are gonna look nice once they’re done

Redevelopment def looks nicer than Fox Valley but at the same time, Fox Valley is doing pretty good on it's own (both times I was here so far this year in late February and early April I saw pretty packed crowds) while Hawthorn has struggled in recent years so maybe they're betting Fox Valley's inline stores will stay mostly intact in the long term future

Looks like mall holding it’s own for now, but if development cash pile dries up, that could spell big trouble. The retail recession has begun !!!! Fancy murals don generate revenue!!!

I absolutely hate malls put up fancy murals instead of trying to fill the store fronts. All it is is just a cover-up saying that our mall is doing bad

So I heard in a retail forum that they are downsizing and renovating the Macys stores in the Chicago area. Hone department and specialty candy and wine is going away. Do you know anything about that? Have you been in a Macys (more specifically a Marshall Field’s) store lately?

I haven't heard anything about that. There is a market by Macy's down in Evergreen Park though which is a smaller type of Macy's

Apartments > an abandoned Sears. To say the least.
