  • A regional mall in Vernon Hills, Il, it has over 180 stores and 5 department store slots.
A darling in the north metro, this has fallen into the background of the much larger Gurnee Mills further north. The mall is in the midst of a large redevelopment after a rash of department store closures. We will wait and see.

Haven't been there in years but spent a ton of time there as a kid. Sears was always my Family's go-to store for Tools, Clothes & Electronics at that time (late 80's very early 90's).

I used to cut across the corn fields and walk to this mall as a kid between ‘75 - ‘79. Good memories. I haven’t been back to this mall since December of 1979. Been living in California ever since. I imagine I wouldn’t recognize the surrounding area anymore and I’m sure the old corn field is gone. Lived in a development called Deerpath on Bedford Road. Great place to grow up as a kid.

I had my first job at the Sears in this mall back in the day.
I lived in the neighboring New Century Town condominiums built at the same time as this mall.
    I remember the old , long gone stores in this mall.....Krochs & Brentanos....Athletes Foot.....Merle Harmons Fan Fair.....Herman's Sporting Goods.....Orange Julius....many others.
    This mall had it all.
In fact , in high school my Economics teacher said Hawthorn , in the mid-80s , was the most profitable mall in the USA based on sales/square footage.
I dont know if that is true but certainly believable.
I'm worried about AMC closing up and pulling out of the mall. I dont know if it could survive that blow.
I haven't been back to Hawthorn in years. Something tells me I should while it's still here.
Great video , you do good work.

I live just down the street from here and both my wife and I worked at Macy’s for a time. The mall is in a state of transition, not thriving but not dead either, was wondering when I’d see it on one of these channels. Say what y’all want about here, I still love this place and it managed to outlast two other malls close by, both of which completely shuttered and reopened as collections of free standing box stores 😎

The only mall I've seen that is truly THRIVING is the Harlem Irving Plaza in Norridge (literally across the street form the Chicago border). There miiiiight be 1 empty store, but if there is it won't be for long. The place is always packed. You should really check that one out for a non-dead mall.

So weird to see this. I practically lived there from Aug/05 til Jan/06. Worked at the Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, which now appears to be an AT&T store at about the 2 minute mark. The Sbarro and McD's are still there, I don't recall a Taco Bell being there, but DQ/Julius and the Mrs. Fields in the next stall are gone. There was a flat screen right outside our store that would play the Westfield theme song and some jingle for an Emma Roberts Disney show or something like clockwork. Imagine hearing that every day for 8+ hours for 6 months straight. Anyway, thanks for the video.

It's been so weird. When I was growing up Hawthorn was the nicer place (like 15 years ago), and Gurnee mills looked ugly and dead inside. Now it's the opposite
Also. This place was popping around the holidays. The mansion in the woods around back would have a huge drive through light show, and though most of the property is now subdivision, the city still puts up some of the light structures by the mall around Christmas

I’ve been to this mall only once, boring... I was there only because I was hungry and had a quick meal at the food court. That was about it. My buddy at work lives in Libertyville otherwise I won’t travel this far north.
Speaking of food just came back home from South Cali. Malls there offer so much variety in terms of dinning options. My last visit was at Westfield Santa Anita in Arcadia. That place is humongous for a suburban mall. They have so many choices in restaurants and eateries. From high end fine dinning to real authentic Mexican and Japanese. Even food court served shushi beats many high priced restaurants here in Chicago. I really envy of that.
