- Abandoned Child World - Waukegan, IL. Closed 20 years ago. Child World was a toy store run by Children's Palace. Since this store's closure, nothing has moved into it, and the building has been left to rot since. The inside was gutted, leaving this place empty and just one giant shell.

Oh wow! I just passed by this building this morning. It's near one of my company's manufacturing sites. Originally, this building was a part of the old Lakehurst Mall complex. The mall itself was demolished in 2004. This is one of the few artifacts of the original complex that remain.
The home town of Jack Benny. We had a Children’s Palace in Clarksville Indiana along with a Toys R Us, Kay-Bre, Something To Do, and many other local toy and hobby stores. All gone now. Very sad. Great video as always. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Imma keep it a buck, I’m from Louisville and I haven’t heard of children’s palace, Kay Bre, or something to do with
@@SoosRamirez1 they were around here. Along with Thotnberry’s and other local stores like Wicklow’s on the Outer Loop and Arvin’s in Jeffersonville. They’ve all been gone a long time though. Castle Hobbies on Frankfort Avenue was another good store.
The company went out of business in 1992 so its been 32 years closed
Actually, it closed 20 years ago
@@JamesAndTheBulldogsOfficial actually. He telling truth so shut the fuck up
Oh wow
Kiddie city went out of business in 1993
Wow! This is such a rarity to see!! I remember filming one in St. Louis a long time ago.
Yeah.
We had Children's Palace in Alabama back in the 80s. It was a cool store.
Wow that’s a rare find there. Nice find wallie like aways I enjoy watching
I mention it in the background around 4:15, but this building was used pretty extensively for production of "5-25-77" in 2006. They filmed driving scenes against a huge greenscreen inside; and at one point the entire back area was staged like ILM during the production of Star Wars. The exterior stood in as a theater box office; and again more prominently as an entrance to Lakehurst Mall, which formerly stood across the street and had been razed a couple years earlier.
As far as I know that was the last real use of the building, by the time I got inside in 2017 it was a hollowed-out shell.
"5-25-77" finally released in 2022 and is quite good.
I used to lived in Gurnee, Illinois. I used to go to Lakehurst Mall from my childhood through my mid 20’s. I remembered in the early 80’s going into that store. I gotten older and I wasn’t into toys that much. This building was in a movie as one entrance of Lakehurst Mall. Even Waukegan West high school was used in the movie as old Warren Township high school. I went to Warren Township high school before the fire just before Christmas break had started in 1984. I still have memories of that school. One scene in it was the peeping of girls locker room from the bus. The locker room was ground level as I remembered. The locker room was under the bleachers in the old gym. Even the actor from The Middle played the dean or principal is from Waukegan. I kind of laughed when I saw 5/25/77 on cable. I saw a varsity jacket with my old school on it. Even seeing an old picture of Lakehurst mall in this one scene. They used this one theater as General Cinema for Lakehurst in Waukegan. Even the General Cinema has also been tore down, too. Lakehurst mall was the mall that I liked to go when I was growing up.
I remember the Child's World at Ford City mall back in the 1980s - early 90s.
...
...
I miss the world that was😢.
I spent a lot of time in Waukegan, Grayslake Fox, Lake, Antioch, etc.L I grew up in Oswego/Montgomery Illinois and lived in Chicago for about eight years. Just wanted to shout out.
That's awesome to see another former Children's Palace building still standing. There's another former Children's Palace building in Ferguson, Missouri that's still standing. Some of the bricks on the front of it have fallen off. The doors and the windows are all covered up, so therefore, you can't see inside. The building actually still looks like a castle. We had one in Boardman, Ohio at the Boardman plaza. It's now a Burlington. We also had one in Akron, Ohio across from the Rolling Acres Mall. Some warehouse is taking over it now. I miss Children's Palace. If Children's Palace was still open today, I'd be buying video games there and Mortal Kombat action figures.
OMG, this jogged my memory, the little jingle at the beginning 🎶 I now remember Child World from my childhood
Kudos to your RUclips Channel and all of the content, Wallie! 👍👍👍👍 My sister used to shop for her daughter's Christmas gifts at Children's Palace in Pittsburgh PA.
Before now, I never heard of Child’s World. There was a little local (Mercer County, PA) chain called Toy World back in the early 80s. It’s been quite a few years since I was a child (but still a child at heart at times)!
Can't wait for the toys r us video!
A world built for abandoned children.
Wow, I forgot all about that toy store. Seeing that commercial brought back memories.
Our Children's Palace in Peoria IL closed in 1993 and The Kroger Company remolded the store and opened in 1994 in the Evergreen Square plaza and the Venture/Kmart Concepts Silver /Green Kmart sign.
Im 48 and never heard of Child's World it's like Toys r Us or a Children's Palace. Thanks for sharing this, im glade to see one that wasn't changed out. Still standing. I guess nobody wants the property.
I never heard of Child World.
Same
It was the same store as children’s palace
@@DawgPound86 it's like a toys r us but bigger
Great video
Awesome 👌 video ❤❤
great Video thanks for sharing this wallie
Nice video Wally 🎉
I come by this location often. I have also taken pictures of this place. Where the Walmart supercenter is next to it used to be a two level mall called the Lakehurst mall. Lakehurst Mall was demolished in the early 2000s.
Wow I have not seen Children World or Place as a kid 40 years ago crazy. If in Colorado it would been apartments complex asap. I enjoy your videos
I remember going to this store at Ford City mall as a child….
that was my Child World too
This was my toy store as a kid. This exact one in Waukegan. I remember being heartbroken when it closed. Can’t believe it’s still standing.
Also. Been closed way more than 20 years. 30+ for sure
Awesome Wall
It’s everything a toy store should be
Went to one as a kid. Its a ...I forget now. But last i saw it still had the castle aesthetic.
Awesome video
I don’t think I have ever heard of Childs world. Then again I am only 16 and only remember going to toys r us. Plus out here our retail landscape is kinda lame compared to out there.
There was one in Aurora IL at fox valley mall in parking lot in 80s and 90s and early 2000’s. Not sure what’s there now
Child World Went out of Business in 1992. That must have even been vacant for three decades unless another store had it in between time.
Been empty since it closed in the early 90’s. I’m from the area and this was my actual childhood toy store. Nothing came in after it. No idea why it still stands while so much around it has been torn down and replaced.
Childrens' Palace... thought that looked familiar; stumbled across the brand a few years ago. Pretty sure one Big Lots store in Colorado replaced one of their stores (the building screams Childs World/Childrens Palace in its aesthetic).
The marcs store in the shoppes of parma was being remodeled a few years back the front was ripped off and the sign label scar showed it was once a children's palace if I find the pic I will share it on Facebook
I remember child world I tried to get a job at the warehouse in NY years ago so I went to service merchandise instead
Man, crazy that's still there. We had a Children's Palace here in Lancaster, PA that's now an Ollie's. Funny thing the building still has the castle turrets there to this day. If you look up the Ollie's you can see the building.
I vaguely remember Children’s Palace. They went out of business when I was still very young.
Went to this exact location in the 90s to buy Nintendo games. ❤
We only had Children's Palace around us. Never heard of Child's World. Toy's R Us is in Macey's here now. It's a section in Macy's.
We had a children’s place in mentor Ohio back in the 1980’s
Hey, Wallie, if you're ever in the St. Louis area, there's an abandoned Child World they tried to repurpose as a community center in Florissant
That was Fun Harbor!
Fun Harbor was located just a bit east
Fun Harbor was behind it. It's a water plant I think.
I remember Child's World Toys, Toys R Us, and K.B. Toys. :(
I noticed the train calendar behind you I am an railfan and model Railroader. Also there is an former Circuit City store in Rockford Illinois behind two locally owned places to eat Uncle Nick's ( in an former Checker's ) and an Tom & Jerry's Also there is an local haunted attraction that is only open around Halloween in the same shopping center as the old Circuit City.
I saw that last year in May 2023!
We had a Children’s Palace I still remember the castle towers . Then it was turned into a Toys R Us last toy I got from there was Pee Wee’s Playhouse Playset
There is one in Altoona PA became a Big Lots

Child World/Children's Palace filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in 1993.
Makes sense, looked like a rough 20 years

When was this built?
1981
Closed in 1992 when the chain went under, this building sat abandoned for over 32 years.

I’ve never heard of Childs world must have been a northeastern thing
