So many great songs came out in the Fall of '73. This one, China Grove, Rocky Mountain Way, Free ride, Photograph, Brother Louie, I've Got A Name, We May Never Pass This Way Again, Touch Me In The Morning, Angie, Love Me Like A Rock, Ramblin' Man, Live And Let Die, That Lady, etc. Incredible time for music.

This takes me home! I was raised in Swartz Creek, MI. I was 6 years old at a cousin's baseball game in 1969 and there was loud music coming from across the street. I asked my mom what that was and she said "That's just Mrs. Brewer's (my mom had her for a teacher in high school) son Donny and his friends making noise. It was Grand Funk practicing in Don's mom's garage. In middle school, I had to do a report on The Crusades, so I got a book from the library. I noticed the book had been signed out years before by Don Brewer, so I stole the library card and I still had it. Years later Don came into the local bank my mom worked at to cash a check. As he walked away, my mom said to another teller that she had never seen a check for that much money. Don heard her and turned around and smiled. My mom was mortified. The Grand Trunk Railroad runs the the area the band is from. Many years ago someone changed a sign over a railroad bridge from Grand Trunk to Grand Funk. It might still be there. Keep bringing us great videos!

HOWEVER up until yesterday I did not know this song existed. I heard it on a SM platform as a backing song - looked it up - loved it - shared it with my son who also loved it. And then I see you have now reviewed it??? That’s nuts. Lol, I couldn't wait for you to finally get to this song. I knew it was going to knock you out when you saw the drummer (Don Brewer) singing. Pretty much all the songs are sung by the guitar player Mark Farner. So, the other songs that you did reactions to from them, it was Mark singing, but this one Don sings. However, all the backing vocals that you heard in their other songs is Don Brewer singing them. As a musician and vocalist myself, I always considered him the best drummer/vocalist. I've never seen anybody do the fills and beats that he does and still sing lead vocals. Playing drums, guitar and keyboards myself, I could drum and sing at the same time. It was because after I saw him do this when I was younger learning how to play, I then started to also practice singing and playing at the same time too. It's not easy to learn. You have to put in the work; however, I have friends who are good drummers, and they told me that no matter how long they practiced this in their lifetime, they just could never get the hang of it. It's not something that anybody can do, even if you practice it. The band had always been a trio, but this was the album where they added a new member to the band. Craig Frost on keyboards and backing vocals. I'm still waiting on somebody to suggest for you to listen to the song "The Wizard". But not the original Black Sabbath version, the version that Ozzy Osbourne did on his 1982 live solo album titled "Speak of The Devil". Now Bill Ward did a good job on the original Black Sabbath album version, but Tommy Aldridge on that live one took it to the next level. That drumming is off the hook. I'm from the 70's and 80's and played in the 80's and 90's era, and when I heard that drumming version on the radio for the first time, I went right out and bought the album. You're going to love the drumming on that live 1982 Ozzy version when you finally get around to doing a reaction to it.

I love the line where he sings "Now these fine ladies they had a plan, they were out to meet the boys in the band they said 'come on dudes let's get it on,' and we PROCEEDED TO TEAR THAT HOTEL DOWN!" LOL. Great live performance but you really should listen to the album cut. They left a lot of woo-woos out, and you can actually hear the lyrics much better. The drummer's voice sounded awesome but honestly a little raw, which I guess it would be if you sang this number night after night, and then had to go back and tear down the hotel with a couple of chiquitas. Exhausting! Watch out!!!! 😂

Seton Hill Studios: Perfect lyrical example of 70s the rock star lifestyle. When bands were rock stars, and their fans were willing to show them their love. Literally! It was a fun time. Seriously, you used to be required to do more than just play competently. You sang if possible, & most people played more than one instrument well. Since you like drummers singing, you will probably like the band ‘New England’. The drummer Hirsh Gardner sings many of their songs, or splits the lead vocal with the guitarist John Fannon. Try their song “Nothing To Fear” for that.

The Grandfathers of heavy metal. GFR was touring their Red album in 1969 and had an unknown band called Black Sabbath opening shows for them.
Well, Sabbath loved the heavy sound, the fuzz guitar, the nuclear sirens, even the name, Paranoid !
And Black Sabbath had it all on their first album in 1970. They ran with the Heavy Metal and Grand Funk was steering to Pop. Grand Funk has Rock, Metal, Soul, Blues, Pop, and even Gospel.
Grand Funk was the first Band to sell 10 straight platinum albums.

Love this song. So shortly after this tour GFR actually broke up, but Frank Zappa contacted them and told them he wanted to produce an album of theirs because he just loved what they did. The band got back together and they produced "Good Singin, Good Playin", which hit 52 on Billboard's top 100 and was the last album with their keyboardist and bass player (seen in this video). Zappa actually played guitar on one track called "Out To Get You" which is mostly just one long frantic jam. It's followed by another great song called "Crossfire" and the two songs really should be reacted to together (Like Zep's Heartbreaker-Living Loving Maid). To me this is peak GFR and very worth a listen. Unfortunately I cant find a live version from GFR, but the studio version is RnR as it's meant to be.

This song was a shot fired against the British Invasion bands from the UK, who were just everywhere on the radio & tours, killing it. Obviously they were iconic bands & deserved the attention, but GFR wanted to say, 'Don't forget about us American musicians!'. Rock was made in the US and American rockers were amazing, even with the UK competition. GFF sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles!

The drummer, Don Brewer, sang backup on Inside Looking Out. I'm not super familiar with GFR so I'm not your guy for many details. But I believe this, and, I'm Your Captain / Closer To My Home (?), are their two biggest hits. Don's fro is still the best of the 70's, if you ask me!! 🤘🤘

Every drummer should know this song from the intro. I always found their cover of The Loco-Motion interesting in the sense that it was unique that they chose that song. The original by Little Eva was a 50’s girlie song and they put an edge on it. Something similar is the Ronettes song Baby I Love You, which I Love but The Hillbilly Moon Explosion do a great heavier rockin’ version.

    Hi Steven..
    The band needed to find
a groove to make a hit record. Todd Rundgren was brought in to produce several sides. By this time in their career the band was simply known as Grand Funk. The Railroad was dropped due to legal reasons with their former manager Terry Knight.

      Hi Steven
After double checking my facts, apparently I misspoke. During the lawsuit with former manager Terry Knight, it appears he won all the publishing rights and credits from the band up to the settlement day. The band retained the right to the name Grand Funk Railroad. By the time Todd Rundgren was brought in, the band was in a severe financial crisis. Rundgren suggested they drop Railroad and just become Grand Funk. The work Rundgren did with the band gave them the push they needed to get back on the charts. We're An American, The Loco Motion...big hits, gold singles. Steven thanks again for reading my comments and replying.
Mark Farmer became a born Christian and released some Christian rock songs. Steven, Have a blessed day.
