They sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles did. Seen them multiple times. This was recorded in a PBS station in Hershey PA. Mel the bass player was 18. Don (drummer) was 21, and Mark (singer) was 21 at this time. Matk didn't like the feedback he was getting so he stuffed the holes with foam and covered with masking tape then had it painted in a psychedelic green pattern. The story goes, that when they opened for Led Zeppelin (US) tour, after the first show they got kicked off it. Led management thought they were too good and upstaged Led Zeppelin. They play like this in their live shows.
That was WITF-TV. It was only a few months later Mountain recorded their most famous version of Mississippi Queen, live in the same studio. Central PA rocked back then.
@@setonhillstudios This song is actually the last track on their second album (the 'red' album) titled simple 'Grand Funk'. The entire album is killer,bro-and the studio version is VERY similar to this live vid. So-- more of an 'organized jam'. Any of their first 5 albums are bangers. They added keysman Craig Frost on the We're An American Band album. Got more pop driven from that point onwards. The early raw bluesy hard rock is what you need. It's amazing when you consider that, at one time in America these guys were bigger than the Beatles, so many people have never heard of them. A lot of people recognize their songs, but don't know who they are. Amazing talent and energy on display in everything they did.
My mind gets blown every time I watch this performance! I've known the hits from these guys for a long time, but I never dove deep into their stuff. And then I started watching reaction channels a few years ago and this thing pops up. My jaw hit the floor. It's kinda like thinking you know your grandpas pretty red car with the black stripes while you are growing up, but then you grow up and the car has been handed down to you and you realize it has nearly 500 HP, the interior is premium original and the car is not just pretty - this thing is a bad ass! This is the original bad ass!! That's how I felt seeing this for the first time in my 50s.
@@setonhillstudios I would recommend a better song from that album: *Sin's A Good Man's Brother.* How good is it? Well, when I first heard Tom Sawyer on the radio back then, it turned me into a RUSH fan immediately. In my opinion, Sin's A Good Man's Brother > Tom Sawyer. Just saying...
The lead singer guitarist and harmonica player is Mark Farner. On drums and backup vocals is Don Brewer. The bass player is Mel Schacher (Shocker). By 1971, they sold out Shea Stadium in 72 hours when it had taken the Beatles seven weeks just a few years before.
Mark Farner was the main singer. He played guitar, both lead and rhythm, harmonica, keyboards, piano. He also wrote nearly ALL of their original music. Including co-wrote most of “We’re An American Band” which he allowed the drummer, Don Brewer, to have full credit for when requested by Don. Out of the goodness of his heart he gave up his credits to Don as was witnessed and documented by their publicist, Lynn Goldsmith. “We’re An American Band” turned out to be their biggest hit. Don and Mel then connived to steal Mark’s ownership in the band out from under him. It’s a sad deal.
The crazy thing is that they would play each song with this same kind of intensity for three hours almost every night. They were the ultimate road warriors.
Great reaction. Grand Funk Railroad is one of the most underrated bands ever. You should also check out their songs,( some kind of wonderful)and two songs that must be played together (I am your captain/closer to home). Love your accent it makes me smile❤️✌️🌼

So sorry you missed that time.At that time the fans never knew what they were going to get, but you knew it was going to be awesome.Somehow it got commercial and here we are today
Grand Funk Railroad is a great American rock band from the 70's. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of my favorites. But they had a lot of great hits such as "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "The Loco-Motion", "Walk Like A Man", "Shinin' On", "Bad Time" etc.
GFRR early stuff was Amazing, but all the so called "music critics" hated them, Yet they sold out Everywhere they went, as many have alreayd mentioned...We The People spoke...lol. I graduated high school in 1973 so this was part of my life, I was a fan from the beginning...So glad You got to hear this, check out more their early stuff Closer to Home might as well be my anthem, lol Thanks man!
Love the masking tape holding his guitar together haha...They started as a three piece yes, then added Craig Frost on keyboards after their 4th or 5th album I believe.
GFR was a 3 piece band starting out. Later they added a keyboard player. Lead singer, Mark Farner played keys as well, between guitar, vocals, songwriting and harmonica so I guess they needed one full-time later. BTW, only 2 bands sold out Shea Stadium in NY. First was The Beatles, 2nd was Grand Funk Railroad, but GFR sold out 3 weeks faster than The Beatles did! Drummer Don Brewer sang lead on We're An American Band. Notice the masking tape on Mark's guitar? It was the only guitar he could buy on credit but it was hollow so he stuffed it with foam rubber, covered the holes with masking tape and threw some green paint on it. They do incredible live performances. Unfortunately, they were ripped off badly by their manager and then the IRS came after them. Mark fought the IRS and somehow bad feelings developed between these 3 founding members. The bassist and Don told Mark they were signing their shares of the band into a 'trust' to protect it from possible future attacks and Mark quickly signed the forms to do the same. He should have read those forms. The other 2 tricked him and the papers he signed, he forfeited his share of the band to those 2 members. Mark tried to put together a reunion tour but the other 2 just refuse to consider it. They're now a tribute band playing in Indian casinos in Michigan. Mark performs on his own yet.
Wow!! That’s such a wild story and a shame that he got ripped off like that! This performance was phenomenal and I can’t wait to hear more from them. So talented! Thanks for sharing and swinging by!

Mark Farner the lead singer is my favorite front man. His voice is still good after all these years. I highly recommend their song Heartbreaker 1974 next. It’s also live.

Truly the BEST LIVE BAND EVER! Give Aimless Lady or Sins a Good Man's Brother a listen. You might also check out HUMBLE PIE LIVE or studio. Just like GRAND FUNK, I doubt you would find a song that you don't like. Best to YOU.
In 1969 your bass pedal was a single spring pedal which made the reflex/reaction time quite slow. A lot of us would cut a few coils out of it to increase the tension. Yeah you'd go through a lot more springs, but it was worth it. When double spring pedals came out, I though I'd died and gone to heaven.
Great reaction !! Love you guys and how much you are enjoying GFRR !! In their day, they ROCKED !! GFR Always gave it 110% and Left their hearts on the stage. Mark wrote "Heartbreaker" when he was 16 yo. They had a RABID Fan base. When they opened a show for someone, they always "Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep never let them open for them ever again !! When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !! When promoters finally realized just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the originators of "Stadium Rock". They filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea Stadium in New York, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took 3-weeks to sell-out Shea !! I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl. the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 City of Miami police cars !! If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, even the guitars and Amps !! He left them NOTHING, or they would have been the biggest Band EVER !! Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R Hall of Fame !! It is criminal GFR is not in the HOF !!
Saw Cactus in Jacksonville, FL, at Skateland - a skating rink. I remember the bass player most of all. I saw there also “Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes”
They were hired to open for Led Zeppelin for their first U.S. tour in 1969 and in just the second show of the tour they were playing basically their hometown in Detroit’s Olympia Stadium and part way through their set, Led Zeppelin’s tour manager had them unplugged and kicked off of the tour because they were killing it and too good to follow! 😂
Eventually in the 70's Grand Funk took on a keyboard player. But 3 more have been involved with the band. Bruce, Max, Craig & Tim. Where do they fit in? I believe you can Google dates.
They were hard core Rock and roll for the first few albums then they added a organist and went as I call it Bubble gum. They change Totally. The early years were the Best Period
I used to love their music (back when they first formed the band in 1969, in Flint, Michigan) mainly due to the constant and consistently wonderful drumming, more than anything. They are (at least were) three: Don Brewer, Mark Farner, and Mel Schacher. Their name was derived from the regionally well-known Grand Trunk Western Railroad, which ran through their home state. Terry Knight became their manager. I pretty much stopped listening to them a few years later, because of the types of songs they were singing, when I was working my way back to the Lord after spending 14 years trying to get away from Him (which is impossible, by the way). They have had their ups and downs, I know, with breaking up and partially getting back together, etc. I have no idea if they ever did actually all three get back together. I know there have been different members over the years, and that they (whichever ones are still rocking together) are still doing at least a few tours here and there, even though I think most of them are my age, now (in their 70s, I think).
Every album they ever did, have songs about the Lord, right and wrong and life in general. Mark Farner even has Christian albums. I can't think of another band that I would rather have my own kids listening to.
The first 6 albums (counting the first double live album and 5 studio albums) were recorded with this original trio formation, all of them were released in the surreal interval between 1969 and 1971, all filled with long songs, between 4 and 10 minutes long, an absurdly passionate, heavy, raw and creative trio. From 1972 onwards they added a keyboardist, took away the weight of the sound and adhered to a much more commercial formula, which is precisely the period in which the two songs you mentioned that you knew appeared. Unfortunately, there are no other video recordings of the initial trio phase with the same quality as that of "Inside Looking Out", only from later on, when the more commercial period begins. Therefore, to get to know the initial and classic phase of the band, just listen to the albums. These are the albums from the classic and heavy trio phase: 1969 - On Time 1970 - Grand Funk 1970 - Closer To Home 1970 - Live Album (double) 1971 - Survival 1971 - E Pluribus Funk
three piece band , check out the album they released called "Phoenix" some great rockers on their .( not sure if there are videos to go with it ) , but you'l love it .
Their early stuff, like this one, was much harder. They became a bit too much pop for me later on. However, I still liked it, but not as much as their earlier material. Their red album is killer and by far their best in my opinion. When you can sell out the old Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles you got something going on. And still not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! The bass player, Mel Schacher, if I recall correctly was known as "Thunder Fingers" and/or "God of Thunder". If you listen to the red album, you will know why. I saw them in the mid-70's, and they were great!! Thanks for the reaction brother.
Haha 😂 Yeah that’s safe to say! The fact they are not in the Rock and Roll HOF is ridiculous! I definitely have to dig into more of their stuff! Have a great one!
Yeah, believe it or not, the studio version of this song was better than what they're doing here. It was quite a fun song to learn to play on the drums. And speaking of the drums, this drummer, Don Brewer, was one of the few singing drummers in rock and roll during these years. And yes, they're improvising some, but not as much as you might think.
Around 1971 GFR added Craig Frost, a keyboard player. Frost is DAMN good. Think Jon Lord of Deep Purple. Best Band no one ever heard of. Came along a little early. USA was still doing the Mama Papa's folk stuff. They'd been better off over in the UK.

But the entire album will blow your mind! THey didn't get more radio commercial til after 5-6 albums. Dive in, T
Might I suggest 'In Need' from this album...?
yes all of it seen them
I don't think you will ever hear such creativity in music again... Please show me any new artists can make music like this!
Saw them live Jacksonville FL - coliseum. Bloodrock opened for them
They are currently touring.
I found this album in a little thrift store and got it for my son. The store, The Thrifty Hippie in Petaluma ca. 😆
That’s awesome that they are still doing it after all these years! 😁
Mark Farner/ singer, guitar, harmonica, keyboards. They added keyboards later to make the live show better.
GFR Always gave it 110%
and Left their hearts on the stage. Mark wrote "Heartbreaker" when he was 16 yo. They had a RABID Fan base. When they opened a show for someone, they always
"Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep
never let them open for them ever again !!
When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !!
When promoters finally realized
just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the
originators of "Stadium Rock". They
filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea Stadium in New York, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took
3-weeks to sell-out Shea !!
I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl.
the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people
who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 City of Miami police cars !!
If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, even the guitars and Amps !! He left them
NOTHING, or they would have been the biggest Band EVER !!
Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles
to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to
ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without
Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R Hall of Fame !! It is criminal GFR is not in the HOF !!
Wow! Thanks so much for all the info and I can’t wait to keep digging down the rabbit hole with them! Insanely talented!
My first concert at age 17 Crosley Field Cincinnati 1970
Grand Funk Cactus
Mountain
And a hit of LSD
Wow. Haven’t heard anyone mention Cactus for a very long time
@@lrpsoteria right!
Saw them twice that year
Saw Cactus in Jacksonville, FL, at Skateland - a skating rink. I remember the bass player most of all. I saw there also “Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes”
@@lrpsoteria now there's another name I haven't heard in a long while
Not Ted he is always
out there somewhere
"The Amboy Dukes"
Such a cool name
The keyboard player was added was added in the early 70's. I was in High School back then.
The good ol’ days! I was shocked they were a trio because I had always thought of them as a bigger band. So cool!
Prince was a huge Grand Funk fan growing up. His band in High School was named after them... Grand Central!
When the microphone is also head banging...
😂🤣😂
early live performances where crazy !
Eric Burdon and the Animals did this song earlier in the 60s, all good. Saw them live in '69 or early 70 and they were very dynamic live...
Oh cool! Thanks for sharing!
They were a 3 piece band up until their Silver Dollar album, after that they brought in Craig Frost on keyboards…
Wild 🤯
Got to listen to Heartbreaker off the live album. Awesome!!!
They were 18-21yrs old.
Great reaction to Great music and musicians ❤❤❤❤❤😊😢🎉😂😅😅❤❤
Grand Funk Live album is a must listen. Wears out all air guitar and drummers.
I bet 🤣
Eventually in the 70's Grand Funk took on a keyboard player. But 3 more have been involved with the band. Bruce, Max, Craig & Tim. Where do they fit in? I believe you can Google dates.
Other tunes, I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home), Heartbreaker, Mean Mistreater, T.N.U.C.
They were hard core Rock and roll for the first few albums then they added a organist and went as I call it Bubble gum. They change Totally. The early years were the Best Period
I enjoyed all of their albums up to Shinin' On.
Similar journey (the Lord) to yours!
@@lrpsoteria ❤
Every album they ever did, have songs about the Lord, right and wrong and life in general. Mark Farner even has Christian albums. I can't think of another band that I would rather have my own kids listening to.
Brother, you have the best smile on RUclips!
Really appreciate the kind words!
Excellent job. Always live or Video 50s threw 80s 😊
The song “ Heartbreaker” like this one will kill you. And a lot of hits…
Flint boys doing a Animals cover
grand funk live and the red album are must grand fuk listens.
These are the albums from the classic and heavy trio phase:
1969 - On Time
1970 - Grand Funk
1970 - Closer To Home
1970 - Live Album (double)
1971 - Survival
1971 - E Pluribus Funk
I agree with you that those are the best albums but, there is no such thing as a bad GRAND FUNK ALBUM. IMO
Saw them open for Johnny Winter about 1970. Check Johnny's "Mean Town Blues" live. GFR did it just like this when I saw them.
So cool! Thanks for the recommendation and swinging by! Have a great one! 😁
three piece band , check out the album they released called "Phoenix" some great rockers on their .( not sure if there are videos to go with it ) , but you'l love it .
If you don't dig this, check your pulse.
Sold out Shea faster than the Beatles. Not in the HOF.
Haha 🤣 No doubt! This was killer!
They sold out Chase Stadium quicker than the Beatles. They had his mural in New York City. That was a block long.
The 1st two albums is pure GFR
Check out the live version of T.N.U.C. if you want to see a eild drum solo in the middle of the song.
Oh cool! Appreciate the recommendation!
These guys used to sell out stadiums.
Yeah they started out as a three-piece band and then added an organist and then some others
The Drummer Don Brewer sang We’re an American Band.
Oh wow!
Pretty good recording for a TV show recorded at the station.
💯
Try the live version of TNUC awesome drum solo
Fantastic choice!! Hey Try Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 at Tangle wood this would be on same level with this performance from Terry Kath !!
We reacted to Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 on the channel already. On our homepage look under the playlist ‘Bands • Groups’ and you’ll find it! So good!

🎥 Flight Of The Phoenix (Remastered 2002) - RUclips
Around 1971 GFR added Craig Frost, a keyboard player. Frost is DAMN good. Think Jon Lord of Deep Purple. Best Band no one ever heard of. Came along a little early. USA was still doing the Mama Papa's folk stuff. They'd been better off over in the UK.
No. Robert Plant had some Mark Farner in his voice.
Haha 🤣 Fair enough! Amazing singer indeed!
@setonhillstudios First time viewe of your channel. Enjoyed your reaction!
@@timbrown49 Awesome! Thanks so much and glad you found the channel! On our homepage we have videos dividing into playlists to help navigate the page better. Appreciate you hanging out! 😁
Dude, listen to Grand Funk Live Album, then start back at their first album and be amazed.
