Mia, between 1969-74 Grand Funk was one of THE biggest bands in the world. Between 1969-76 they put out 12 albums and all of them are excellent.
“Closer To Home” is one of their best songs, as well as being the title of one of their best albums which was released in June of 1970 and went right to number one.

Great reaction !! a true "Power TRIO" !! In their day, they ROCKED !! GFR Always gave it 110%
and Left their hearts on the stage. They closed each show with "Inside Looking Out" and brought
the "House Down" !! They had a RABID Fan base. (mostly chicks). When they opened a show for someone, they always
"Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep
never let them open for them ever again !!
When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !!
    When promoters finally realized
just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the
    originators of "Stadium Rock". They
filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took
    3-weeks to sell-out Shea !!
I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl.
the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people
who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 Miami police cars !!
If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, and left them
NOTHING, they would have been the biggest Band EVER !!
Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles
to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to
ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without
Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R HOF !!

Yes! My dad works in radio. Growing up, we got to meet different people who would come into the studio now and then. My sisters and I would have a collection of autographs from different artists, comedians, sports figures, etc. My dad also threw poker parties every weekend. One man, probably the sweetest man I’ve ever met, that was there every weekend, was Don Brewer! I didn’t know he was the drummer of the band, Grand Funk Railroad, for a long time. He was just Don to us! When we found out who he was, my sister asked him one day, “why do you guys repeat the same thing over and over again?” (Referring to the song Closer To Home - I’m Your Captain). My sisters and I also made up a dance to their version of Locomotion! Lol!

Perfect reaction to what in my mind was the greatest Rock Jam in History. "Raw" was the perfect word to use for their sound when they came out of Flint Michigan in 1969. Jan Wenner, that scumbag, used that word to diss the Band in a Rolling Stone Review back in 1969 but Karma just hit Wenner when he was thrown out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee recently.

They were the biggest band in the US for some years, even sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles! They were huge, huge while playing live, had a bunch of hits and also very popular worldwide. They opened for Led Zeppelin in the US at one point and LZ's manager was getting nervous because they were just killing it. They told the band to cut their set short but they refused and told the crowd about it. The crowd flipped out so hard that Led Zeppelin just left without even going on stage, lol.

Grand Funk was the biggest live band in the world from 1969 - 1975... bigger than Led Zepplin and so many others. Mark Farner who is the lead guitarist in this is one of the most talented front men to ever walk on a stage. He wrote 90% of the songs, was the lead vocalist at such a high level, played bass early in his career, played drums, harmonica and was the keyboard player while they were a three man band. Amazing talent!

They were the real sh#t in the late 60s and early 70s! The later addition of a keyboardist really rounded out their sound. In 1971 they played a concert at Shea Stadium in New York with a capacity of over 55,000 people. The concert sold out in three hours! For comparison, The Beatles also played there to a sold out crowd. The difference is that it took The Beatles three MONTHS to sell out their show.
