Grand Funk Was so big during this time that they were actually bigger than Led Zeppelin out of the gates in 1969 here in America !
GFR was a very underrated band.
They went out as opener for zeppelin as unknowns in the Midwest. They stole a couple of shows so Peter Grant pulled their plug, literally, mid set. True story

In my opinion, Grand Funk Railroad was one of the greatest. Unfortunately, they were also the most underrated. I saw them play live once. One of the best!
In June 1971, they sold out Shea Stadium in less than 72 hours and Humble Pie opened for them. The crowd shook the stands so much that engineers were checking the structure fearing collapse. Also, GFR opened for Led Zeppelin and were kicked off the tour for being too good and Humble Pie was kicked off the GFR tour for the same reason. History rhymes1!
It is a crime that they have not been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Saw these guys in the early 70's. My very first live concert as a matter of fact. Good job guys.

I bought their LIVE double album in 1970 when I was 15. I played it often! 💕
A hardcore primitive, Raw album.
It was a video produced by Grand Funk privately. The clappers were just the friends & roadies involved in production. Hence the specialized camera work scripted for the song.
Someone said in another comment that this performance was for a TV broadcast, so it was shot in a studio. I don't know if that is true, but it makes sense.
GFR had tons of good songs: "I'm Your Captain," "Paranoid," "I Can Feel Him in the Morning," "Gimme Shelter," and my favorite "Sin's a Good Man's Brother." Good reaction.
They used to perform in sold out stadiums. I saw them live in Miami around 1969. Great concert.

This performance was in front of a small studio audience at a TV studio reportedly in Pennsylvania. This was literally days before they got their big break at the Texas Festival.
I grew up listening to these guys before they were famous. Mark would have graduated high school in 1967 with my older brother, but he got kicked out instead. LOL I graduated with his younger sister, so I was at their house and watched him & Donny Brewer on drums & Mel Schacher on bass, before they were famous. Mark is still performing solo with a new band. old hits & new. And this is not their biggest hit either. 'Closer to home', 'Some kind or wonderful' or 'Locomotion' are some bangers, to name a few. I maybe a Boomer, but I grew up listening to the best music. Bob Seger is another Michigan boy who made it big, that I watched before he got big. Lucky me. Also, I host karaoke now at a Pub and a couple years ago Mark & his new band performed in town & came in for dinner & drinks. ONe of the guys in his new band is black & he got up & sang Grand Funks song, Closer to home. In the lyrics, Mark sings "I'm your Captain' & at Karaoke his guy sang 'I'm your black man'. So funny. Mark died laughing at him.

Been my favorite band of all time since 1969. Inside Looking Out, the live version recorded at COBO Hall in Detroit has got to be the best live version of this song ever. Hopefully this band will be inducted in to the RRHOF soon!!!

and Left their hearts on the stage. They closed each show with this song. Mark's guitar was an Eastwood Messenger that fed-back terribly so he covered the f-holes with tape. It came with like a "boost" gain switch, which was kinda ahead of it's time. They had a RABID Fan base (mostly "Chicks"). When they opened a show for someone, they always
"Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep
never let them open for them ever again !!
When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !!
When promoters finally realized
just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the
originators of "Stadium Rock". They
filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea Stadium in New York, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took
3-weeks to sell-out Shea !!
I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl.
the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people
who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 City of Miami police cars !!
If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, even the guitars and Amps !! He left them
NOTHING, or they would have been the biggest Band EVER !!
Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles
to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to
ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without
Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R Hall of Fame !! It is criminal GFR is not in the HOF !!

They sold out Shea Stadium (a huge baseball stadium in NYC) faster than The Beatles! They were a huge, huge band, a bunch of hits records on the radio, one of the most popular live band for a good period of time etc.
If a 70's rock song was long, it means there was a guitar solo,except InnaGaddaDaVita
Love these guys!!! I live in Lansing, Michigan, an hour away from where these guys began in Flint. They were and still are regarded as some of Michigan's Very Best.
I've seen this band in concert and they are brilliant LIVE and on their LP's. You gents are very entertainnig and you know so much about the instruments and reading their bios. Thanks! I am now subscribing!

The critics considered them an over amped garage band but they were insanely popular in my day. Their music was high energy fun and not at all pretentious or subtle (There is nothing subtle or pretentious about Flint MI :) ) and that's what rock music was intended to be. Rolling Stone was the counterculture/music "paper of record" back then and they were brutal to GFR. So they began to tone it down and they wanted to be seen as more "versatile", even adding strings (!!) to some of their stuff. IMO they lost their way. But their early stuff holds up very well after all these years

They SOLD OUT SHEA STADIUM faster than the BEATLES. In 1972, they added a keyboardist. They are still touring. Mark is not with the group anymore but, Mark Farner has his own band Mark Farner's American Band. Don Brewer the drummer still 🥁 drums like this. Farner still owns the original Musicraft Messenger guitar he used with Grand Funk. If you notice Mark's guitar 🎸, he didn't like the feedback he was getting so he stuffed the holes with foam and covered with masking tape. Then had a psychedelic green paint job on it. The bass player Mel was only 18 here, Mark and Don was 21. This was filmed at a small PBS TV station in Hershey PA.

Bass player is 19 years old here. Drummer and Guitarist are 21. With a toy drumset and masking taped guitar. ,Dudes , Watch Grand Funk " Were an American band " Live in 74' , Their biggest hit.

Saw them at the Forum in Inglewood California back in the day. They were the opening act for Ten Years After. They completely stole the show and were amazing.

In late 1969, PBS, the American public broadcasting system, put on a series of programs in Hershey Pennsylvania called the Show, where high school-aged students could gather and listen to music acts that were popular in that time and expand their knowledge of music and how musicians expressed themselves through their art. This performance was from the first of the gatherings called the Show, and the teenagers didn't quite know how to react to Grand Funk Railroad since they were the first band in the lineup and in my opinion gave the best live performance of any of the rest. The other performers included Lesley West and Mountain, James Taylor, Dion, Zephyr, and many others. I have seen the videos of the entire performances, and there were many great performers on the show, but no one gave a live performance as good as Grand Funk Railroad. I also saw Grand Funk Railroad live many times, and they always put on a great show. Personally, I liked them best when they were a three piece band before the addition of the organist and before the glamor rock started.
As a teenager I loved this band.
So did I and now at 66, I still do!!! A true shame that the drummer turned into such an ass wipe. MARK FARNER was and will always be, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!!! I just wonder if anyone actually believes that Don,

Hey guys first concert ever saw 18 at Cap Center in Landover Maryland
OK, your more learned viewers can confirm what I had heard about this video:
First, these guys are a lot younger at that time than they appear; I mean, late teens to very early 20s!
Second, The smattering Applause reflects the audience only being representatives of a record label looking to hire them, and this is their tryout song (I don’t know if they had more);
Third, They were so aggressive and so popular that Led Zeppelin fired them as their intro band while on tour together. They did just fine despite that.😄
As I said, you’re more expert viewers can correct points I may have misstated [Although I do believe my third point has been verified!).

That happened in Olympia stadium Detroit Michigan. They just blew them off Stage Peter grant unplugged them halfway through their show, and the place started rioting. Sold out show at Shea stadium July 871. They shook the stands so hard. They closed the stadium down eventually cause of it.

I was 10 to 13 in early 70s... and their songs were the best at the skating rink to me. Flying around that rink to their music was ecstasy for a skater.

I can remember in the early 70's, maybe 72-73 I remember a DJ saying they were voted America's favorite band. They were pretty big back then. One of my fav bands of all time. Just one of many great songs.

Let me just say this about that main guitar solo: I know Mark Farner has always kinda been second class to people like Hendrix, and Page and Beck and Clapton, or Eddie or Yngwie Malmsteen or whomever, but the sheer feel there, especially when he goes into that sort of super fuzz part, is world class, and any of those other players I mentioned would prize that very highly...

No they are not. Mark Farner the Guitarist, main vocal and songwriter does not play with them Don and Mel are dicks. Don the drummer played in Bob Segers band in his later years.

This was very early in their career. You should do something from like 72.
The members were aged 19-22 at the time. Don Brewer the bassist was fresh out of high school. They sold out Shea Stadium in NY faster than the Beatles did. So many hits and STILL not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A travesty. Marks guitar was a 67 Musicraft Messenger.

My fav song by them is "We're an American Band" sung by the drummer.

These guys problem was after 5 or 6 years they broke up and 2 cludged the lead singer out so they weren't around that long, but they have many great songs
