This show has aged like a fine wine. All four actresses were phenomenally talented!
And that is why we miss them
Well it wasn't their first sitcom either
As a gen x from the states, I can assure you...this is the epitome of comedy in sitcom here. These women weren't just the golden girls. They were pure gold!
Jbooker: I started watching this show in 6th grade. Still watch it with my 20 year old. Know every episode by heart, but I still laugh.
I remember watching this show every Saturday night
4 generations of my family love this show! I used to watch it with my Nana as a kid in the 80’s, and my kids are also huge fans. Iconic.
Blanche's answer "Better late than pregnant" is iconic
80s baby here, and this is just a TASTE of the comedy this show brings. And it's still airing today! Grew up watching this show and it's a favorite of mine all these years later. You really don't get gems like these anymore and it's so sad. R.I.P. to this wonderful cast
Whoop whoop another 80s baby!
@@BritPopsReact Whoop whoop! :D
I was born in 1980 and my birthday was yesterday. I remember watching as a kid but I appreciated the reruns as a teen more. 😂👍
Hey, the Queen Mother adored The Golden Girls and invited them to play at the Royal Variety Show one year I remember. Sadly the video you watched didn't showcase the show very well and wasn't even close to their funniest moments.
and the whole performance, is here on youtube.
The context is important not just clips
Every sitcom with Susan B Harris' name attached to it was fantastic. She produced several.
Ps. When I was about 24 my dad told me I was gonna be just like Sophia when I got old. My bf cracked up hard. I told them I took that as a compliment. That was 1986. I'm 62 now and, turns out, I kinda am. 😂😊
I'm pretty sure I have Dorothy's sarcasm. So I'm pretty sure Sophia is not far behind. I hope.
Sounds like good life goals to me!
the Dorothy screaming, 'Condoms, Condoms Condoms' line was one of the best... and Blanche serving shrimp to a little person scene was priceless. 'god, I wish I was dead'
The little person episode was hilarious
SHRIMP?! 😂
Betty White was the last Golden Girl to pass, and it truly truly broke me. She almost made it to 100yo.
Her legendary savagery lives on though. 🥰👍
She did and I won't hear another word of it, her birthday was simply misrecorded (seriously tho it would have been so much more fitting to have had 100 years of her wouldn't it. But I guess we just didn't deserve that much lol.)
Good Lord, my 91 year old mother still watches this show as do my husband and myself. They are still hilarious to this day. Wish they still made shows like this. Fastest 30 minutes on TV.
No one has ever had a bad word to say about the Golden Girls. I used to watch it at my grandma’s house when I was a kid. I’m 52 now and still catch a rerun when I happen across one.
True. Even people I've met who have said the show wasn't for them never really had anything negative to say about it. One of the few things on the planet I never really see people crapping on.
my fave Golden Girls scene is The Great Herring War. Dorothy (Bea Arthur) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) trying not to blow the scene as they couldn't stop their laughter at Rose's (Betty White) story. I love watching TGG. I was a kid when it first aired and watching it now as an adult I can appreciate the humour and amazing writing.
That's my favorite too.
I always wonder if the laughter was scripted or were they really trying not to break character 😏😆
That scene is so good that I laugh every time I see it. You can tell Bea and Rue are barely holding on because they're almost unable to say their own lines. Betty just keeps adding one hilarious detail after another until it's completely out of control.
It’s never occurred to me that British men would love this show. They always insult each other with a bit of cheek. Right up their alley 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I used to watch this with my British roommate he introduced me to keeping up appearances
I loved the scene when Blanche was talking about having another baby. Bea kept breaking character, which is why she put her head down. Any scene in the show when you see her doing that is for the same reason. Just pure comedy gold!! My kids and I love watching it together because I get to share my childhood with them.
Watching them break character is almost funnier than the show lol
Best breaking character moment: Rose talking to Blanche and Dorothy about the Great Herring War. Betty White's delivery is so good and Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan are almost in tears from laughing.
The Golden Girls are legends. I honestly can't say which character is my favourite, because they all had their share of funny lines. Betty White (as Rose) probably has the edge for me, she just played the role to perfection. Perfect casting all around.
Also, I'm a couple of decades away from being a 'golden girl', and I lost my filter years ago 😂😂😂
Really? 😂😂🤣
@@firefighterchick I know... it's hard to believe, isn't it? 😇
@@tundielmy nose will start to grow if I said yes. 😂🤣😅😛
@@firefighterchick 😉🥰😘
Brilliant writing! Brilliant acting!! Still watching reruns today. RIP the Golden Girls!
Talented writers don't need to resort to swearing to be funny.✌️❤️🙏🙏🇺🇲
Very true. I think the only "swear" word allowed on reg day and prime time tv at that time was damn. Anything else was on hbo and other sub services or late night. At the same time GG constantly used "vulgar"situations as comedy and we love them all the more. Where else can I hear terms like the grand puba of sl*ts
I was born in the 80s and I'm from the US but I didn't really watch Golden Girls until my college years in the early 2000s. I always found them hilarious and I also appreciated how they handled important topics like grief, AIDS testing, sexuality, family relationships, aging as a woman, etc in an empathetic way but also with humor. A great show!
Something I love about this show, the character Sophia (the oldest woman) was played by the YOUNGEST woman on the cast. Estelle Getty was AMAZING in her role, they all were. They all won Emmy’s for their roles in this show as well. I have watched this show since I was 6 or 7, and never stopped. We all need to smile and laugh like these women made us, they are all partying and dancing on the other side.
I rarely laugh out loud when I watch a tv show, but I remember seeing the first episode and I busted out laughing when Sophia (with her perfect comic timing) said "I never get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I go in the morning. Every morning like clockwork, at 7 am I pee. Unfortunately, I don't wake up till 8."
My 32 year old daughter was over here a couple of months ago and was raving about this show she was watching. With a sincere face, she asked me if I had ever had ever heard of this show. I'm a 54-year-old American female. Every fan base box for thos show is checked..lol
I used to watch it with my mom, and my daughter now watches it with me. The circle of life ;)
The Golden Girls is a BIG HIT and continues to be shown nightly in re-runs even today! People love the show because of the top class actresses, and for the Best WRITING. Each of those 4 women won an Emmy Award for best comedy actress over the years of the show's run!
Even as a child when it was first airing I loved this show, decades later I still love this show. Sadly all of these lovely ladies have passed, Betty White was the last to go at 99 in 2022 just 17 days before her 100th birthday. I hope younger generations can love this show too and help their memory live on.
Betty White is one of my heroes! I was devastated when she passed away!
My mum loved them, so I grew up watching them and they are my 'old age' goals. And with my love of them, my kids also enjoy the humour and enjoy watching the episodes. One of the reasons they LOVE Betty White so much!
Golden girls is the best. They kept you laughing through every episode!
This was the funniest show at the time and still holds up today. The scripts were brilliant, comedy at its best.
Those girls were so fun to watch. 😂😂😂😂😂
This show is genius, and most of the humor holds up completely. Really ahead of its time. One of my favorites was a Christmas episode where they made homemade gifts. Blanche gave the ladies a calendar with all the men who’d brought “some special joy” into her life (wink). They open it up and Dorothy gasps. Blanche says “September?” And Sophia says, “I’m surprised you were able to walk in October.” So funny. And behind the scenes, the crew had made silly pictures of themselves in provocative outfits to surprise them and make them laugh.
As I grow older, I appreciate these characters more and more. It's true, age gives one more license to say that's one feels.😅
Magnificent casting, amazing writing makes for one of the best tv comedies of all time. Started watching GG at 19 and still watch it at age 45. One of the few comedies that never gets old. Can’t believe they are all gone
Still in 2024, The Golden Girls airs daily on TV here in the US-in syndication. You can even buy Golden Girls merch-at any time.
I still hold strong, I will be Sophia one day. I watched every single episode. Good God, I can't believe they're all gone now.
Despite being hands down hilarious the show tackled themes that were unheard of at the time with great humor but as well great sensitivity and openness like homosexuality, loosing a child, alzheimer, memopause... It's stunning they passed censorship.
Best sitcom ever and a rare gem that showed how amazing older actress could be if given the opportunity.
This show has held up so well. All four women were immensely talented and all four won Emmys for their performances; Betty White in 1986 (Best Actress), Rue McClanahan in 1987 (Best Actress), and Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty in 1988 (Arthur won for Best Actress, Getty won for Supporting Actress).
This is great acting. They said so much without words. It’s amazing that a show about four older women in a setting that rarely changed could make a show iconic.
I grew up watching this & it's an absolute classic. ❤
There should been some moments in there ie Rose talking about life back in St Olaf; Sophia setting up the scene for one of her days of youth "Picture it: it was 1929. A young girl in Italy..."; Practically everything Blanche said was funny, and Dorothy was SCATHING many times.
American classic. Loved it. Another great one was "soap" hysterical
Fun Fact: Susan Harris the writer and co creator of the show is Mother to writer, philosopher , Sam Harris!
Yes I remember watching the show,in fact it still comes on tv everyday!
Having worked with senior citizens in a previous position years ago in my early 20s, I found "The Golden Girls" to be even more hilarious because I would often wonder if the writers had been listening to the people that I worked with. I remember the episode in which Blanche was determined to become a writer, and Sophia's response sounded like something that one of my former senior clients would have said:
Blanche [to the other three on the lanai]: "Girls, I have writer's block. It is the worst feeling in the world!"
Sophia: "Try ten days without a bowel movement some time."
Blanche: "You just sit there hour after hour."
Sophia: "Tell me about it!"
Me: 😃😄😄😆😅😂🤣🤣🤣
Such a wonderful show!
Love this show. Every episode will have you in tears from laughing. Sophia, the oldest of the 4 ladies in the show, was always my favorite. She was so savage. Reruns of this show still play today.
I watch episodes of the Golden girls every single night before I go to bed. That’s how I wind down. One of the greatest shows ever.
In the episode where Daisy has Rose's bear and Rose gets him back is one of my favorite scenes from the whole show. She could be tough, too!
loved them.. still watch when they are repeated..
I was born in the 70s so I was able to watch Golden Girls when it aired and all four ladies were hilarious, my favorite being Sophia played by Estelle Getty
The gentleman in the blue shirt has kind eyes. It's like they easily convey warmth and gentleness even when he's says nothing and simply looks at someone.
@sandybeach123
Thank you for the lovely comment and you are very observant too😉
YES, they were Golden.
Never missed an episode. Then watched the reruns when they came on. I remember every one of these clips and I laughed just as hard today as I did the first time I saw them. Designing Women was another great comedy with 4 women who owned a design company. It was younger women 30's-40's. Great comedy. I am now heading to my streaming sites to see if I can find these two great shows anywhere. Thanks guys another great one. Peace✌ and love to all.
As a Gen X-er, this was my JAM back in the day! They were and are incredible, and the comedy is still as good today as it was back then. Way before 'Friends,' the game was "Which Golden Girl are you?" (I aspired to be Dorothy, but if I'm honest with myself I'm probably closer to Rose.)
They have a lot of compilation clips of this show on RUclips, and I can recommend any and all of them. The ones of Dorothy and Sophia being savage are a must-watch (the backstory behind Sophia, the cranky mother, is that she had a stroke, and the lasting side-effect was that it left her with zero filter - hence the savagery.)
The Queen loved this show so much she had the actors come and perform a skit for her. Queen Elizabeth had a great sense of humour if she had them perform for her. ❤
This was one of my favorite shows growing up in the 1980s. I've seen every episode numerous times.
Golden Girls was airing when i was a little kid, saw it more in syndication as I got older but didn’t really get it. Now watching it as an adult it is ridiculously hysterical. These aren’t even the funniest clips of the show.
But the comedic timing and genius of those four women together is unmatched.
PLEASE watch more! I love this show! Been watching this for decades!❤
This is real American comedy. Fantastic writing and delivery! ❤
I’m relatively young and I love this series. I watch it all online. I love everything 80s so for me it has that typical 80s feel good vibe, and I love the interplay between the four main characters. The one who is supposedly the mother (Sophia) of Dorothy is actually the same age as the other three but they made her up to look about 20 years older.
If you liked Golden Girls, you might like to watch a 70s sitcom named Maude where Bea Arthur and Rue McLanahan played friends, and another one named The Mary Tyler Moore Show where Betty White played a totally different character.
Betty White as the oversexed Sue Ellen in the Mary Tyler Moore Show got her the audition for the Golden Girls -- they wanted her to be Blanche. Betty didn't want to play the same type of role again, so she read for Rose and the rest is television history!
Maude was itself a spinoff of 'All in the Family,' which was the American version of 'Till Death Do Us Part.'
I watched this series so many times. Never get old. One of the great shows.
Loved this show even as a young kid, but of course I missed out on most of the jokes. Watched it much later as an adult, and they always put me in tears. 😂
This was such a great show. The camaraderie between the four of them was hilarious. I can watch it over and over again.😂
This show was way ahead of its time. They dealt with controversial topics that no other TV show would; homosexuality, euthanasia, ethics, health care, homelessness, sexuality of older adults, etc......Also, the Queen Mother loved this show so much, she invited the cast to reenact one of their episodes on a London stage for her and hundreds of invited guests.
Pure genius! To this day I watch episodes when I want to have a laugh or see how they dealt with unusual situations and you laughed because they were hilarious.
I used to watch it as reruns on tv when I was a kid - early teenager and loved it, I still love the show and now can catch a lot of the innuendos much better lol
this show started when we I was 5. I never missed a moment. I soooo shouldn't have been watching at that age and yes it influenced me as an adult even more
Loved the great writing, witty banter, excellent delivery by 4 great actresses.
😂🤣😂 Used to watch them, they're hilarious!!
I absolutely loved this show!!
So many great memories of watching it with my grandma who loved it too!😂
All of these ladies had huge careers before this show as well.
Estelle Getty(Sophia)was the youngest of the ladies in real life.
Bea Arthur went to a private all girls school in Lititz.
She got kicked out for swimming nude in the schools fountain. 😂😅
She was also a transport driver in the US Marines during WWII.
Rose was the dummest one but also the sweetest.
BP2 in most areas of my life I'm already at the age where niceties are wearing thin. 😂🤣😅
There are plenty of other great clips of this show.
This show reminds me of when i was younger sick home from school watching it with ginger ale with my mom gosh i miss those days ❤
Watched this in syndication in the 90s as a child. I love it.
The show is still on tv everyday here in New York. It's very popular with young people and older people.
One of my favorites of all time which I still watch regularly.
I was born in the mid 90's and im so thankful my mum grew me up on these type of classics 🫶🏾✨️ one of my favs. I always put it on for a good laugh..This and three's company.
I would suggest checking out at least two or three full episodes of the show. The Golden girls is amazing and there is just so much sarcasm and witty comebacks. Also, as much as they bicker, they are their own little family.
Also, if you enjoy something like Mrs Brown's boys (if you haven't seen it highly recommend checking it out) you would probably like the Carol Burnett show.
OMG I loved this show and still do !!!! Please do more of this show.
I was too young to understand it growing up, but I've caught reruns and this show is still hilarious. I'm glad you got a taste of it!
I used to watch this show with my grandmother when I was growing up. It still makes me laugh 😅.
Hahaha, did I watch it? I have 177 episodes saved on my DVR. It's my go to mood booster, still. ❤👵🏼👵🏼👵🏼👵🏼
This is my favorite show of all time and I’m 37.
The Golden Girls will never go out of style PERIOD!! ❤
I remember the last one was in my favorite episode where all four ladies are involved in a murder mystery event. Dorothy is very intelligent. Practically Sherlock Holmes.
LOVE THIS SHOW!!! HILARIOUS!! So many fun moments with these ladies!! They were ALL GREAT and the writer's on this show were AWESOME!!! :) THANKS for the reaction!! :)
"Shady Pines Ma" 😂
One of my favorite of all time shows.
As somebody who writes and performs stand up, this show and a few others (and other comics) are what I hold up as the benchmark I want to reach. If it's not funny enough, important enough, or somehow "punching down" at people, I either try and write it better or discard it as not worth the offense. The Blanche telling a long story about dress shopping, the guy hitting on her, and finally Rose waiting and then doing the "What were you doing in lady's petite?" Just comedic perfection in drawing out the tension for a punchline that delivers.
One of my comfort shows ❤❤
The Great Herring War. Epic.
Loved this show. Still watch of there are reruns. Too many good moments to pick just one favorite.
Just a super show! I still laugh when the i see it on Netflix! 😅😅
I'll grant them their comedic timing. They were a great ensemble, and the script was very clever.
Watched it all with my mom in the 80s-90s. To this day we get a kick out of my threatening her with Shady Pines.
Sophia, Dorothy’s Mom, looked and sounded just like my Italian grandmother, except my grandmother had a heavy Italian accent. She had the same dry acerbic humor as Sophia.
Dorothy's most sarcastic comments is a good one.
Watched every episode and can watch it over and over and over again without ever getting tired!
I still watching this show on Hulu. It's a kind of show that never gets old, the script writer were genius. There are a lot clips of this show in RUclips .It's really great you found them. Dorothy & Sophia are my favorite characters.
I grew up with this show and I adore it. Glad you liked it 😀
I love watching this on Disney plus! ❤️✨
These are four of the funniest women to ever go come together! Rose, the lady that asks Blanche what she was doing in Ladies Petite is Betty White who has made audiences bust out for nearly op of her 101 years.
The young lady in red was pregnant and looking for a home place to give birth. Those were the screams you heard in the background.
We gen Xers were so lucky to have the best comedians. The four women were so talented and naturally funny. A lot like your Dawn French and AB Fab ladies.
I also loved Mama’s family. Thelma Harper was hilarious.
They still make me laugh out loud.
One of the funniest shows ever.
