  • I finally got round to making another Doctor Who ranking video! This time, I'm ranking all 9 of the current regeneration stories. The rules for this are that only stories in which the Doctor regenerates at the end are included so 'Time and the Rani' and 'The Movie' have not been included. They'll be on the post regeneration ranking once I get to it. Also remember that this ranking is my personal opinion so please respect that, and I'll respect yours too!

Out of the few that I have seen:
    7. Logopolis
    6. Planet of the spiders
    5. Twice upon a time
    4. Time of the Doctor
    3. Parting of the ways
    2. The end of time
    1. The caves of Androzani
Sadly still have yet to see both The Tenth Planet and The war games but I have heard so many great things about both. I literally rewatched Caves of Androzani recently and just can't get enough of how good it is. The sense of urgency as time is running out for both The Doctor and Peri is nailbiting and Saraz jek is such a great villain. I also adore those cliffhangers! A truly timeless story!

Part of the ways is definitely the one for me. So underrated. The beginning with the game shows is a little cheesy but the way it descends into being quite dark is cool and when Rose is killed you really wouldn’t know at the time if she was genuinely dead. The best bit though is when the Daleks are revealed. The fact that earlier on in the episode dalek they showed how powerful one dalek could be and how much the Doctor hated them and why really emphasised the danger level and the emotion that 9 must have felt. The but where he says “no” is fantastic and my second favourite moment of 9 right after everybody lives. The humans dying and even captain Jack was hurtful. The transition from the fun adventures 9 and Rose have to the sub-urban every day life Rose had to go back to. The way the Doctor chose to die a coward and when Rose came back as the bad wolf was incredible and I loved the score. His regeneration, while not as heart breaking and emotional as tennant or dramatic as capaldi, it was still very impactful. Fantastic!

Caves is the most overated story in Classic Who
I like Logopolis, but as an American I had no foreknowledge that this was Tom Baker last story

    9) The Caves of Androzani
    8) The Time of the Doctor
    7) Logopolis
    6) Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways
    5) The End of Time
    4) Twice Upon a Time
    3) The Tenth Planet
    2) Planet of the Spiders
    1) The War Games
The Caves of Androzani in my opinion is one of the most overrated stories of all time. I can't for the life of me figure out why it's universally loved by fans. It's one of my least favourite stories from both classic and modern Who. It really irritates me how many people put it on a pedestal because after one or two rewatches going in with an open mind I just don't like it, and I really want to see what everyone else sees in it, but that moment just hasn't come for me yet. But what can I do? Like you said, we all have our opinions and that's great. The Time of the Doctor is okay, it's just a bit of a disappointing story to finish my favourite Doctor's era. I think Logopolis is fantastic, it simply ranks lower through the others being slightly better. Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways has a great sense of scale and stakes, but I don't like the first half as much as the second. The End of Time is a brilliant story, but what slightly ruins it for me is the end revisiting all the companions. It's nice to see and I understand that it's the end of an era, but we didn't NEED to see it, plus I'm not the greatest fan of the Tennant era in general. Twice Upon a Time was a simple story and I really appreciate that. After years of loud, bombastic finales to a Doctor's era, this was just a simple one and was a nice change of pace exploring the conflict of the Doctors not wanting to regenerate. While it was nice having a relative of the Brigadier, I agree that it felt a little out of place. I used to love The Tenth Planet a lot more than I do now. I love the Mondasian Cybermen, their voices and costumes are very creepy, I just don't like that it takes a whole episode for them to arrive. It's a shame Hartnell fell ill for episode 3, but nothing could have been done to prevent that. It's a good story, it just has a few pacing issues. Planet of the Spiders is a standout episode for me because generally speaking, I'm not a fan of the Pertwee era, and this is one of my favourite episodes of all time. My only complaint would be that the chase scene lasts far too long, but it's still fun. The War Games is one of my favourite classic stories, second only to The Curse of Fenric. The first (and currently only) time I watched it, I watched the whole thing in one sitting, which is amazing seeing as there are some 4 part stories out there that are a huge pain to get through, yet I was able to sit for over 4 hours to watch this no trouble. It is a perfect end to the era of Patrick Troughton, who I will argue is the most consistent Doctor of all time. He's not my favourite and there are several of his episodes near the bottom of my ranking, taking the bottom four spots, but the Doctor himself is consistently good throughout this era.

Both End of Time and Caves of Androzani are pretty exciting imo but yeah apart from those three the rest aren't all that exciting
