Doctor Who Classic Review - Black Orchid
This episode has grown on me lately this past year, a very fun episode. And I love that ending too, best ending to a Doctor Who episode haha
Haven’t watched this video yet, but just want you to know I shook my hands out of excitement cuz my favorite Dr. who episode is being talked about
Dammmm this is the first episode I watched, every time I think of doctor who is this the one I remember right away
This is underrated and this was like the lockdown and the return of the macra and face of bow.
i liked kinda series 7, ,4 ,1 and2 ,i loved series 8,5 ,3 ,10 and 11 ,it was ok with series 12 ,series 13/flux is what i hated most , because of pandemic and an undeveloped multiverse story with tecteun/the doctor s adoptive mum/mad scientist,it was kinda good gatwa s first season ,but maybe the way i think changes or is going to change one day when 15 s tenure continues whatever he has 3 or 4 seasons😉🤔
Honestly for me the bits with Susan and her grandfather bickering about her freedom and autonomy were pretty hard to watch. Sometimes I do snap and say “Do you want your granddaughter to grow up or not?!” I know it’s just a show, but sometimes movies and tv shows hit too close to home when it comes to personal business and trauma.
This serial was way ahead of its time with many great ideas and concepts. War Machines was a sign of things to come with the 3rd Doctor's era with Unit and the military. Then you have concepts like AI, networking and a centralized computer system controlling everything and self contained power weapons that effectively kill. This serial also proved that Hartnell was far from on his last legs mostly delivering his lines well, giving a very solid performance with more energy than usual and one could tell he was having a good time making this one. I agree with your ranking on this one!
I give it a 7/10
9:40 Really? Stop insult others eras and just accept this episode is so bad.
The 2 parter does look cheap is a ok story though.
I enjoyed this one more than most. Especially Baker's performance going from manic to shouting to secretly plotting. The double monster threat was an extra bonus too and being set on Gallifrey was interesting. I didn't mind the altered Sontarons in this finding there voices more menacing than some of the new series which sound comical in comparison. Also the scores and music used in this one were very memorable especially the one used for the Sontarons, the Gallifrey Anthem and the soundtrack used in the beginning. Weak points are legendary with this one. The rushed ending with Leela staying behind was very unrealistic, the Tardis interior scenes being an obvious old abandoned hospital didn't really work and some of the tongue in cheek humor was getting out of hand like the Doctor looking at the camera and some of his insults to K9 and others were a bit OTT. I'm going to be more generous and give this one a 6 out of 10 if anything for its sheer ambition.
Doomsday gets a 10 and the first half 7 out of 10. And first appearance of the cult of skaro.
The single biggest letdown with this one is the main enemy itself the Prawn at least in full size form. The story went fairly well until the Nucleolus escaped and became full sized. Its terrible looking monsters like this that give the classic series a bad reputation for visual effects along with the wall that was obviously already cutout for K9 to make into a barrier. If they could have corrected these two major blunders this would have been a better story IMO
Best episode of series 2
Worst episode of series 2
A good assessment and around what I would score this episode.
An underated story 6/10 and based off a blue Peter. And a theory about the shadow in the story that belonged to the trickster
16: Series 11 15: Series 12 14: Series 13 (Flux) 13: Series 7 12: 2007-08 Specials 11: Series 14 (Season 1) 10: Series 9 9: Series 6 8: Series 8 7: 2023 Specials 6: Series 3 5: Series 2 4: Series 10 3: Series 5 2: Series 1 1: Series 4
10: Flatline 9: The Pilot 8: Hell Bent 7: Under the Lake / Before the Flood 6: Extremis 5: Listen 4: Oxygen 3: World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls 2: Mummy on the Orient Express 1: Heaven Sent
Pretty good points made on each season. Me personally 14. Season 11 13. Season 7 12. Season 13 11. Season 12 10. Season 6 9. Season 14 8. Season 2 7. Season 8 6. Season 5 5. Season 9 4. Season 1 3. Season 3 2. Season 10 1. Season 4
It was a shame in billions of ways this Dr Who serial was sadly Roger Delgados last ever appearance given how he sadly died in a motor car accident in Turkey at the time he was planning to leave Dr Who in the final Jon Pertwee serial a six part story called the Final Game which would have killed off the Master and revealed him to be another aspect of the Drs character his Id and also the 3rd Dr would be mortally injured this triggering his 3rd Regeneration into his 4th Incarnation a shame we lost what was intended.
This is average by mark gatiss
Thoughtful review and commentary! I just watched the serial for the first time and was glad to learn I'm not the only one who struggled to keep hold of the narrative thread. Very confusing story but I really enjoyed it anyway, just appreciating each scene, especially knowing this was the last one filmed. I thought of Light as Lucifer, the devil himself, and Control as some kind of restraining angel, though both are pretty weak characters. The Upstairs Downstairs setting with a supernatural twist was cool. Not a fan of Ace and her rough edges and unsettling cross dressing. Loved the big game hunter.
I give it a 8/10 and I remember the dvd series 2 volume 3 dvd and the cybermen collection and the monster collection dvd
My favorite is Matt smith without a doubt
I have to agree with you. It is slow paced. But not all bad. But yeah, if you want more Ben & Polly action, look elsewhere.
I'm sorry but I actually find this overrated, yeah there are some moments which stand, but Planet of the Daleks was more enjoyable than this because I could sit 4 episodes of it without feeling bored but Green Death, no.
I saw the clockwork robot action figures
Great story the return of Sarah Jane and k9 mark 3 and then k9 mark 4 comes next.
This story is actually one of my favourites from Tom's era. The "hard science" era of JNT during Tom's tenure is interesting. I like the fact that it deals with vampires - a nice nod back to horror pastiches that were produced in the Holmes and Hinchcliffe era with a new twist. I also like Tom's more autumnal sombre Doctor in his final season.
I find a good story with the werewolf and got the werewolf action figure as well. Is the werewolf a monster or an alien?
The show Jack is in dates this even more than Weakest Link. It's called What Not to Wear, and was hosted by fashion "gurus" Trinny and Susanah. They basically styled ordinary people to make them look better
I like Planet of the Daleks
I like Frontier in Space
finally, I dont listen to doctor who reviews unless the person sounds like they went to hogwarts or grew up in the shire. I have no interest in American reviews
I agree that this is not Tom Baker's best work.
@@josephnash2081 he should have left in season 17
This is the worst classic story ever
@jaybristowe2346 no only the ones I like
I give it a 4/10
Brian Miller the husband of Liz Sladen was Dugdale
I wonder if you have seen Blake,s Seven, and if not will you be watching and reacting to Blake,s Seven sometime in the future please.
@Eltonlaleham no I haven't seen Blake's Seven so maybe it's something I can look at in the future.
Jodie Whitaker is not better than Colin baker
So no real explanation about the random pointing or the medieval cloak.
It was a garbled/silly mass of TRASH.
Everywhere the Doctor has landed in the past got destroyed during the events of this episode (so to speak) Everywhere the Doctor landed throughout space and time, Sutekh ‘planted’ a version of Susan Triad. They all ‘activated’ into harbingers at the same time as the real Susan. They are how Sutekh destroyed everything in the past, as they are blowing the dust of death into everywhere the Doctor has been. I hope this makes sense 😂 . I’m also bitterly disappointed in the outcome to Ruby’s story 😢
I really was convinced that ruby's mother would be something more important after dressing like palpatine and that dramatic point. also still confused how ruby made it snow all those times? plus Sutekh clinging to the Tardis allllllll those years i think it could've been funny/better for him to somehow have gained the power over the tardis when Donna spilt the coffee in wild blue yonder as its the first episode we hear the tardis make the weird noise. I had so many good ideas for empire of death and with all the build up to certain plot points ive been left quite disappointed..
Flux is a fun series that works when you properly think about it, but War and Village are the best of the bunch by far.
The Destroyer is back!!!
I've found it interesting, as someone who picked up on the racism very early on, watching reviews and seeing all the different places that people have got to before they picked up on it. (I also want to make it clear that I'm not saying that my picking up on it earlier makes me better than you because this is the internet, and I'm sure someone will take my comment that way, just that it's interesting how different people engaged with this episode.) I do think that if they were having the 'can't walk' thing (and she was going out of her way to bump into things, not just tripping over something in front of her due to no practice watching out for things) they shouldn't have had the running, and you've raised a good point in regard to the followers. And then there's the guy called Cavendish who has somehow survived despite his surname beginning with C. Do recommend you rewatch it now you know about the 'twist' ending. There's a lot of stuff you'll probably pick up on now you know, I would say there's at least one thing in every scene in which the people of Finetime are interacting with the Doctor.
I love the faceless ones It is one of my favourite Patrick Troughton doctor who story I watch it in black and white on dvd
