Andrew, just saw your youtube video on breaking the flash sync speed (part 2). The Nikon SB-600 also has the capability to be a slave remote flash to be triggered by another other flash remotely. Just press on the 'Zoom' and 'Minus sign' together for 3 secs, and it will come up with the remote option, there u can set the remote slave flash to ON.
Andrew, I am from India.... I tried your Tutorial, and Now I am enjoying it with simple Flash Godox TTI 550... 😂.. low value of flash and click continues with flash, It works.....

I set my Canon D600 (T3i) to 1/1000 and one Yongnuo on the hotshoe set at 1/1 and pointing at another Yongnuo on the hotshoe set at 1/1 in 'slave mode'. Both of the lights fired, but I still got the dreaded 'black bar' in the photo. Ideas?

I am able to make this work on a Sony a6000, however there is a catch. The only speed above the normal flash sync speed of (1/60 - 1/200) which will work is 1/4000. 1/1000 thru 1/3000 are pitch black images no flash captured at all, between about 1/250 and 1/750 varying parts of the image have flash with the remainder being dark. My thoughts on this are that the shutter speed must be faster than the flash duration for this to work correctly. I would imagine I could use any shutter speed above 1/4000 if my camera was capable.
Yes, thats the same result I got. It only worked at 1/4000th of a second. Rest of the shutter speed above sync speed resulted in black image or a bar in the image

I have the same setup as you. you need to be in HSS on your 7D as well. it's in your camera flash menu. also set your flash to HSS. full poweron all flashes. (your 430EX II flash needs to be on your camera for this to work). Then if you have any other flashes setup on a light stand set them to slave mode. hope this helps

Hi there, its an interesting vid you got. I am not sure, I completely understand. So you are in M mode, Ap+St+ISO at your will (fast shutter, wide aperture) and you are firing flashes full power, triggering them with their own light. Did you try this set up with radio triggers? I am just choosing my flash set up, but I would like to go for 2 YN 560, radio triggers and Pentax K5. I need to acchieve isolated light patches in total darkness, so I need to cancel light spills.
Hi Mr. Andrew Boey, I have the Nikon d3200. So is there any way to get the shutter speed faster than 1/200 with the built in flash. If it is possible I will be able to use the built in flash as a remote flash to trigger the external flash. Please help me with my problem. best regards.
I have canon 700d which has sync speed 200 and using YN56iv flash. Tried the settings, but not getting the hi speed sync. pics are coming with half white and half black shades. I have seen hi speed sync in higher end canons with 'hi speed' option in shutter option and along with that used ETTL flashes.

So I just tried this with a D3000 and a SB-800. The problem is that once you put the flash on the hotshoe of the camera, the shutter speed is limited to 1/200s. How do you set the shutter speed past 1/200s or can this be done only with a manual (single center pin) flash on the hotshoe of the camera?

Hi Andrew...Tried triggering the flashes with a Mobile Flash ....no matter how close i fire it from they do not fire...both the SB800 and SB700 ...used them in SU4 mode ...would like to know your views on this - Regards
Thanks for the kung fu method Andrew. Unfortunately it doesn't work as hoped with my setup, which is: Canon 650D, Yongnuo YN560-II and YN560-III (tried both flashes hotshoe with the other triggered remotely). - At 1/250s I get clean images (on each other setup besides this method the max shutter speed for clean images was 1/200s). - At 1/320 the bottom ~200pixels start to get darker (no problem if the image gets cropped) - At every faster shutter speed the image has the part light / part dark problem. Now I'm struggling to narrow it down to which component in the setup might be the problem, one or both flashes or maybe a poor shutter performance in my camera. Can anyone help out? Any hint is highly appreciated. Many Thanks

Hi Andrew... With my 7D Mk II and 630 EX-RT, and HSS turned on I can go above the 1/250th limitation ... I have one observation though... with the HSS disabled and with the 630-EX-RT in manual mode, i can't seem to get the shutter speed to faster than 1/250. I have no problems with the Yongnuo 560-III, I can go all the way to the fastest shutter speed, of course i start to see the dark band at and after 1/400th of a sec. But that was what I wanted to experiment with the 630-EX-RT but my 7DMkII would simply not go beyond 1/250th... Would you know the reason why?

I was intrigued by the idea, but it doesn't work for me my my two Yongnuo flashes, a YN560-II and a YN560. I tried this outside with my camera in manual exposure mode at f3.3 and 1/2500 at iso 100 with my Nikon D7100. I had one flash on a light stand in slave mode at full power, and the flash mounted on top of the camera in manual mode at 1/128 power to trigger the remote flash. The flash on the light stand went off, but the image was extremely dark because of the 1/2500 shutter speed. It just didn't sync properly. This video was of no value to me.
Hi Andrew. I am Manish from India. After seeing and reading a lot of stuff on High Speed Sync (HSS) I'm even more confused. Please answer my very specific questions and I think it will solve mine as well many others queries. First the equipment I have with me - Nikon D3100, Youngnuo YN568 EX, Youngnuo RF 603 N II Q1. Is D3100 is capable of doing HSS? If the answer is "No" then VOILA! first problem detected. I need to change my camera. If answer is yes, then what flash setting I need to change to make it HSS compatible. Is there an external hardware that i can use to do so, like a YN622 trigger. Q2. Is Youngnuo 568 EX capable for HSS when used as off camera and on camera flash? Q2.(A) Can we do HSS with only one flash unit? or do we need more than one? Q3. Instead of using a iTTL flash on top of the camera, if I want to use a trigger to fire the flash (YN 568EX) on a light stand, then is YN 603 N II capable for HSS? or Do I need YN622? Scenario 1: If I use younguo RF 603 trigger- on top of camera (D810, using flash setting in AUTO FP) and the reciver under the flash unit (YN568 EX) kept on a light stand? will I be able to to HSS? Scenario 2: If I use one YN568 EX on top of camera (d810) and another on a light stand then HSS possible? Many thanks in advance.. Manish
Hi Manish - I'll answer your questions. However first you need to understand that Andrew did not use HSS (ie the pulsing flash mode that makes your light into a continuous light) in this video. He's simply relying on the flash duration at full power (about 1/900th of a second on a Nikon SB900 for example) being almost long enough to cover the time it takes for the shutter to sweep the sensor (this is typically about 1/400th regardless of shutter speed, but there's some tail off on the flash). He is just using the manual slave modes on the various off-camera flashes to trigger them (and they are full power too). You don't have independent control of the flash exposure with this method (the flash is effectively a continuous light too, and must be on full power) but it works pretty well. If you were to use the HSS features on your D810, Nikon flashes, and some radio triggers then your questions apply:- Q1: No the D3100 cannot do HSS (it will work fine with Andrew's method in this video though). Q2: Yes. Q2 (A) (run out of numbers??) Yes you can. Q3: No, you will need an HSS capable trigger like the YN622 Scenario 1: No this will not work. Scenario 2: No - the YN568EX will not act as a master flash.
I just tried this with my 5DmIII with 600exrt on camera in manual and HSS, and YN568EX II as optical slave. YN568EX II is firing but not in sink with the speed of the camera, so I have a black bar... so only when I lowered the speed to 1/200 it sinked good. when I switched the YN568EX II with METZ 58 AF1 it is sinking on any speed :-) , also my OLD PENTAX is sinking on any speed as optical slave :-) so it NO-GO for YN568EX II
Hai Mr Andrew,I have Nikon SB-900 and Yong Nuo YN560III, using Nikon D750. When SB 900 as trigger and YN560III as slave,I can use shutter speed up to 1/4000. Thank you Mr Andrew ;-). If only it works vice versa(SB-900 as slave and YN560III as trigger),that will be great. Can you help me here Mr Andrew...?
I can confirm that this is true, I think it has to do with the pins that make contact with the flash and camera, the Yongnuo only has the middle pin to fire it as the Nikon has 4 pins.
I have a Nikon d5200, YN568 EX flash, YN560 111 flash and a sunpac flash from walmart. is it possible for me to break the 200 sync speed rule. I also have tranciever triggers if that helps.
+Tarek Raslan The 3x00 and 5x00 series have software limitations that don't allow you to do that. Some cameras allow you to increase the shutter speed even though you get the infamous black bar at the bottom and some cameras do not.
+Tarek Raslan You're welcome, sir . Let me share a trick with you. In a dark environment it is the flash that freezes the action, not the shutter. If you are in a dark environment and set the flash for 1/5000 of a second, the picture will be exposed for the duration of the flash, because that is the only source of light despite the fact that the shutter speed is a mere 1/200 of a second. This work around has allowed me to do high speed photography on my D3200.
+Tarek Raslan Daylight shooting is indeed a problem without fast sync As for the flash duration, set it to manual and the lower the power the lower the duration. 1/1 has the longest duration and and 1/128 respectively has the lowest duration.

Hmm trying this with on camera SB-28 set to Manual 1/1 and SB-700 set to su-5 on M 1/1. Using anything above the sync speed on D600 I still get the curtain. What am I not doing correctly as I have su-4 on the off camera and both are full power as in first video. Are these flashes still too fast at full power? Auto Fp Cls working much better for me.
Hi, Katk925,.. i don't happen to have a SB-28, but why not reverse the usage. SB-28 as the optical slave and the SB700 on the camera with full power? Try that, i think you will get it if you do so this way :)
Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately the SB-28 does not have Optical sensor built in. I have been trying to find a way to use it even though it is an older flash. It is a bit out of date but I figure it does make light, why stop using it, right! I may have to add an optical slave via a hotshoe or PC sync adapter, or figure out how to do this with a PC sync cord.

This technique doesn't seem to work with the 6d. I've tried using a 430exii to optically trigger a yongnuo 560ii. The 560ii at full power has a long enough duration that it should work, but the flash fires too late in relation to the shutter. If you are trying to trigger your 580ex optically you are also out of luck because canon uses a proprietary series of pre-flashes to send instructions to the flash which will screw up the timing. About your only option is to use your flashes "High Speed Sync" function(it is the lightning bolt with an "H" next to it on your flash). It will allow you to use the flash up to 1/4000 on the 6d by firing a series of smaller pulses as the curtain travels across the sensor effectively exposing the image evenly. The main drawback to this is that you don't get full power. It also needs to be connected directly to your hotshoe or by an ettl extension cord. If you want to go wireless Yongnuo makes a trigger that allows for both ettl and high speed sync. It's the yn-622c - about $80 on amazon. Good Luck!
Benoy Thomas Hi. The 6D works perfectly up 1/4000th. The only Problem is that he never explains why it works. You need a HSS compatible Flash and a HSS compatible camera. If the camera or the flash can´t use HSS, you can´t even switch to higher speeds. The 6D is HSS compatible, the 580EX is not. You can simply buy a Yongnuo 568 /II for Canon (HSS is Camera manufacturer specific) and it simply works. Of course You don´t need a second Flash either. It also works with 1 Flash directly on the camera. All this is no trick or secret but it´s really built for this reason.
+Benoy Thomas Actually, you can set at a higher speed only if you have a flash that is manual capable that you can set at full power (1/1). I've used Nissin DI 622 II and Yongnuo 560II with my 6D. I also use a non-ETTL remote trigger (Yongnuo RF603C) so that I can trigger both flash without using an on-cam flash. I only use 2 remote triggers, one installed on my 6D, the other installed in either the YN 560II or the Nissin DI622II. I've set to optical slave whatever is not using a remote trigger. If you look at the part 1 of this video, you will learn that don't need HSS to set the shutter speed to higher than 180.
It has nothing to do with the 6D. Its the flash. Both have to be HSS compatible. I use the 6D with Yongnuo 568 II (560 is NOT HSS compatible) and it works great up to 1/4000th. It works up to 1/8000 with my 5D II. The video is misleading and I don´t believe he really understood the technique. Canon Speedlite 600 works as well. The 580 could be with a software update.

Watch the video before this and it explains it. At full power the duration of the flash is long enough that it works without having high speed sync triggers.
it won't work with a pop up flash because nikon has locked the shutter to max out at 1/250 or so. So no, only with a SB Flash on top of the D7000 will this work :)
I think that has to do more with the actual duration of the flash than the actual power/brightness of it. A 1/1 blast lasts longer than a 1/32, for example
There's a way of breaking the 1/60 - 1/200 of the Software limitation when using the flash on camera? Or i have to use a cable sync or radio controled on one flash + 1 on optical slave to overcame this? Got an Nikon D5500, it doens't have HSS setting. thx

Hi Miles, were you firing your flash on full power (1/1)?? I have a6000 but only 1 flash so I can't test this.
I believe I was using full power however, that was a couple years ago. You can test with the flash in the hot-shoe.
That didn't work. Even at 1/350th, i'm getting a black bar in the image with flash mounted on camera's hot-shoe.
+ Gaurav P If you read my post you will see that it only worked at 1/4000th of a second.
Yes, thats the same result I got. It only worked at 1/4000th of a second. Rest of the shutter speed above sync speed resulted in black image or a bar in the image

Hi there, its an interesting vid you got. I am not sure, I completely understand. So you are in M mode, Ap+St+ISO at your will (fast shutter, wide aperture) and you are firing flashes full power, triggering them with their own light. Did you try this set up with radio triggers?

So I just tried this with a D3000 and a SB-800. The problem is that once you put the flash on the hotshoe of the camera, the shutter speed is limited to 1/200s.
- At 1/320 the bottom ~200pixels start to get darker (no problem if the image gets cropped)
- At every faster shutter speed the image has the part light / part dark problem.

This video was of no value to me.
you have to have the on camera flash as same power as the off camera flash.
I am using Nikon D3400.
I'm also using sonia mannual flash.
can I take photos more than 1/2000 shutter speed using that flash?
No, the D3xxx and D5xxx family does not have FP on the menu, so you can't setup a speed higher than 1/200 with flash
Hi Andrew. I am Manish from India.
After seeing and reading a lot of stuff on High Speed Sync (HSS) I'm even more confused. Please answer my very specific questions and I think it will solve mine as well many others queries.
First the equipment I have with me - Nikon D3100, Youngnuo YN568 EX, Youngnuo RF 603 N II
If you were to use the HSS features on your D810, Nikon flashes, and some radio triggers then your questions apply:-
Q1: No the D3100 cannot do HSS (it will work fine with Andrew's method in this video though).
Q2: Yes.
Q2 (A) (run out of numbers??) Yes you can.
Q3: No, you will need an HSS capable trigger like the YN622
Scenario 1: No this will not work.
Scenario 2: No - the YN568EX will not act as a master flash.
I just tried this with my 5DmIII with 600exrt on camera in manual and HSS, and YN568EX II as optical slave. YN568EX II is firing but not in sink with the speed of the camera, so I have a black bar...
so only when I lowered the speed to 1/200 it sinked good.
when I switched the YN568EX II with METZ 58 AF1 it is sinking on any speed :-) , also my OLD PENTAX is sinking on any speed as optical slave :-)
so it NO-GO for YN568EX II
i thought YN565EX II was high speed sync already ?
Freddy Cougar
Yes, but only in ttl mode. If you want to work in manual mode you will have a problem
Does it work with remote triggers like the Yougnuo RF603CII too?
Henning Fischer it doesn't work with rf603 the trigger cannot support HSS
Hai Mr Andrew,I have Nikon SB-900 and Yong Nuo YN560III, using Nikon D750. When SB 900 as trigger and YN560III as slave,I can use shutter speed up to 1/4000. Thank you Mr Andrew ;-).
If only it works vice versa(SB-900 as slave and YN560III as trigger),that will be great. Can you help me here Mr Andrew...?
Should be able too, u know. Have you not tried, tuan?
It set SB-900 into su4 right? But it cannot surpass that 1/4000 shutter like Yong Nuo...
should be able too... dun worry, let me try tomorrow or so :)
I can confirm that this is true, I think it has to do with the pins that make contact with the flash and camera, the Yongnuo only has the middle pin to fire it as the Nikon has 4 pins.
It seems that the flash on camera has to be TTL capable.
Can i do speeds greater than 1/250 with with 2 Yongnuo 560 IV, one on Nikon D750 Hot shoe and the other as a slave?
yes.
CAN I DO THIS ON YONGNUO 560IV??
same here.. I have a YN560-IV and III but it doesn't work for me.. hope someone can verify this :(
I have a Nikon d5200, YN568 EX flash, YN560 111 flash and a sunpac flash from walmart. is it possible for me to break the 200 sync speed rule. I also have tranciever triggers if that helps.
me either. going to get a d7100. that has high speed sync
+Tarek Raslan Daylight shooting is indeed a problem without fast sync
As for the flash duration, set it to manual and the lower the power the lower the duration. 1/1 has the longest duration and and 1/128 respectively has the lowest duration.
+Tarek Raslan Thank you. The felling is mutual. I am glad to help.
Thank You 🙏 Very informative

I may have to add an optical slave via a hotshoe or PC sync adapter, or figure out how to do this with a PC sync cord.
true! you can add an Optical Trigger :) :)
+Beyond Photography I had the same problem with my d600, though I used two Yongnuo 560 III, both on 1/1 and everything. Help please. :D

Hi, i tried with my Canon 6D and flash 580 EX , But my shutter speed maximum can open 180 only . how can i break that ?
Good Luck!
Grant Hansman
I sent you a direct message, hope this helps you.
Well if all else fails you can always just use a reflector.

Easy to understand, but when he said you have to have both flashes in full power, that threw me off. What's that got to do with sync speed?
Watch the video before this and it explains it. At full power the duration of the flash is long enough that it works without having high speed sync triggers.
What about a Nikon D7000 with its top flash and a Metz 58 AF-2 Digital.
it won't work with a pop up flash because nikon has locked the shutter to max out at 1/250 or so. So no, only with a SB Flash on top of the D7000 will this work :)
Can I use another Metz?
you can try an external flash on your camera that has sync speed capabilities at full power
If the slave sensor is so sensitive that a cigarette lighter can trigger it, why must the master flash (on your camera) needs to be set to full power?
I think that has to do more with the actual duration of the flash than the actual power/brightness of it. A 1/1 blast lasts longer than a 1/32, for example
4:28 you can be doing this the whole day... hahaha... nice tutorial
You wouldn't wanna miss all these lessons from Andrew. Be sure to check out Beyond Photography's website 😍 😍 😍

There's a way of breaking the 1/60 - 1/200 of the Software limitation when using the flash on camera? Or i have to use a cable sync or radio controled on one flash + 1 on optical slave to overcame this? Got an Nikon D5500, it doens't have HSS setting. thx
