I'm trying it with my alien bees and not getting it to work. I have the optical slave synced into the back on the alien bee and using my SB800 to trigger it. What else am I doing wrong? Any tips?
So, I watched this video not once but twice. Did exactly what you recommended. I used a 85mm 1.8 lens and two flash units. Setting where, f1.8 & 8000 with an ISO of 100. Dang if it didn't work like a champ. Thanks a million Andrew!
Hi..My name is Kiran and I must say that you make very interesting videos and I follow each of your videos. Thanks a lot for taking all the effort in teaching us. Im using a Nikon D5600 and in this camera I cannot break the barrier of sync speed as it doesn't support High speed sync. Whatever flash is used the shutter speed cannot go beyond 1/200. How to use this camera with flash outdoors to get perfect exposure with all colours and background blur.. Any tips could be helpful and will be really appreciated. Thank you.

Very good technique! works perfectly using a speedlight. I understand why it does not work with wireless triggers due to the delay of those devices. There's only one thing I do not understand, I tried the same thing by replacing the speed light with a pc sync cable directly to the strobe and it does not work. Can you explain me why?

Thanks a ton, Andrew! I just did it with a cheap flash mounted on my Nikon 750 which was in turn used to trigger a YN 560III! It even work at 1/4000!! Greetings from India...
Hi,Thanks for your wonderful tutorials of photography. I have one doubt.I am using Nikon D810 and Nikon SB910 speed light flash. Is this flash have High speed sync? Will it work proper, if i choose 1/1000s ?
This video was much superior to your previous. Thanks! I wonder what effect this High power method has on action shots. Perhaps you could show a 1/4000+ shutter speed with this method doing action shots or shots with powder / water.
Thank you, Robert. Yes, we have done 1/8000 before without any problem at all :) Sure, perhaps the next episode, we shoot a highspeed sports this way. Thanks for the idea and thanks for dropping by with that cool comment, sir :)

Ok,have tried a few preliminary tests, looks promising, Nikons work a little bit different, the FP.or the 1/250 or 1/200s ( Auto FP ) as it appears in the menu, works in either the "A" priority or "P" program modes, I'm using an SB800 flash, when you set either of these modes in the camera, the flash switches to "FP" modes and that appears on the flashes display next to the power setting.. With that said, you can adjust your F stop and the speed will adjust accordingly to the maximum allowed by your camera and or the lighting conditions will allow. I used an ambient light meter reading at 1/200 as a baseline for the balancing output from the studio strobe, on a typical bright sunny day would be about F9.0 to F11. Thanks for the tip..;)
Hi, great video! but yes you can use radio triggers to get HSS with the Godox AD360, TT600 and Rovelight 600(already tested). And with long flash duration studio strobes too. I use the "Pixel King" system. the Pixel Opas can do too. And the Yongnuo YN622 radio system can trigger HSS and "Hyper Sync"(the long flash duration method). There are some other capable radios too. :)

How is this working? Is the optical trigger pulsing the studio flash from the HSS strobe's flash? I didn't think studio strobes are quick enough for that
Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like it is difficult to independently adjust for ambient light and flash exposure separately since flash exposure can only be adjusted by changing the distant between light(s) and subject. I assume that the distance of the flashes in the video was setup using trial and error for proper flash exposure before the start of the video. If there is a faster way to get the perfect flash exposure quickly, please let me know.

Andrew, thanks so much! I just set up one Elinchrom RX4 with my Sunpak on lowest setting 'on-camera' as a trigger and was able to make an exposure of 1/8000 at f3.2 on my (D7100) and 105 IF VR micro-nikkor. Great exposure, nice blurred background. Totally blown away, BIG thanks... (set FP320*) and turned off all flash settings in the D7100.
To shoot high speed 1/4000 or above, is not necessary Flash Slave Trigger Hot Shoe Sync Adapter. The only thing that you need is a flash with High Sync, Camera with flash sync speed option. First mount your flash on top of your camera, set it up to Manual or ETTL mode full power, enable the H sync. turn on the strobes or flashes synchronized to slave 1. Thats it.
The higher end radio triggers like pocket wizard are fully compatible with High speed sync. Yongnuo and other thrid party flashes also have radio solutions.
I'm a tad confused, which doesn't take much, I'm a chef by trade and my degree is law so technical stuff flies right over me. I'll be honest, because I've never done much studio work my strobes are very cheap Chinese ones. I tend to use these with a radio trigger on one and then the others work off the light from the first. They pick up this light irrespective of what modifier they have on them, but are you say that if I changed the optic sensor to one that is more in view I can break the sync speed by using a flash to trigger them? My camera are the 7D II and the 5DII
Great. 1) I have a D3100 means I can not achieve 1/4000 flash sync as it does not have CLS , am I right? 2) How can use optical triggers for low key lighting as my dark room will get light from even the lowest power setting on my built-in flash I use to trigger optical slaves?

It seems did not mention in this video, you need a HSS flash as master to trigger those old studio flash. If a non HSS flash attached on Canon camera, it will not allow you to choose high speed in menu, which means shutter speed will be limited at max 1/250. This is possible because 320ex used in this video is HSS capable.
Hello Sir, I have Sonly SLT A-58, Godox AD200 speed light and Godox umbrella. Can you please tell me how can I overcome sync speed of 1/250 using this stuff, or, will I have to purchase another flash. Thanks
I tried with my Samsung NX1/SEF580a speedlight and it works too. Problem is, in the end I decided to get a much cheaper 400ws wired studio strobe set, since none of the wireless triggers can work with my camera, only to find when I add in a power pack, the total cost is nearly the same as a battery powered 600ws strobe! So my question here is, what battery pack would you recommend to go with the strobe? I could only find one type of power pack (searching the general phrase "power pack" gets back with all kinds of other stuff not related to camera gear.
Hi I'm using 750d canon camera and using youngnuo 560iv flash in my camera not alow to change 2nd certain sync or any flash settings plz help me with this

It's rather interesting that all people really need is to use optical triggering to get their lights to work. Everyone has been moving towards radio triggers without realising that they also have their drawbacks.
I just tried the with my canon 5D Mark iii, Yongnuo YN600 EX-RTII and an PAUL C Buff Einstein 640 Flash. I had absolutely no luck making this work if anybody in out there knows what settings to make this work with this flashing camera set up please let me know thanks Brian
thank you for this help (and the help of your gorgeous models!) . . mostly everyone where i live says "2OO-25O syn speed is good enough" . . but not for 2.O-1.4 etc . . also, can we shoot these flashes indoors (with canon 58Oex-not 58O exii), canon 32Oex, canon 430ex)?

Brilliant information (as always :-) ) Let me try and get this right so I understand this....... Full power on the camera mounted flash, set at Nikon's Fpp, gives enough signal duration to keep all the optical powered slave flashes open for the full duration of the shutter movement! Have I got that right?And....Yesss, Theoria Apophasis IS being rude!! Obviously had no parental guidance in his childhood years!!
+ThePParadigm Thank you. I've just tried it and yes it does work. However.... It wouldn't work on my D7000 pop up flash. Max shutter speed I could get was 320. I mounted my SB-910 which allowed the camera to top out at 8000 sec. But only got results when I set the flash to 'M' 'FP' mode. Is this correct? Or can I get my pop up flash to work at 8000 sec somehow?
+ThePParadigm Sorry, I forgot to say that my SB-910 triggered a K&F Concept 590EX-N flash. I turned the SB right down on power and had it facing away from my subject. Camera settings were ISO 200 F1.4 and 8000sec shutter speed! It all worked once I set the SB to 'M' 'FP' BOOOOMMM!! result 😎📸👍
Sorry Mathew. I still have problems....... Camera's set to 125 sec Auto FP. Popup flash is set to commander mode Built in flash Mode --. Flash is set to SU-4 remote, M1/1 But I'm still getting a black screen even at 2000 sec. The flash goes off but it looks like its going off before the shutter releases. HELP please
+ThePParadigm I think I'm confusing SU4 with S2 😳. I'm not using TTL, just manual. However..... I've put my SB910 on to the camera 1/1 manual power and triggered two other flashes @ 4000 shutter speed and it works a treat. To test if it was the sb910 giving the light, I turned the other two flashes off and the exposure was dark!! RESULT 😎📸 I'd like to be able to trigger the flashes with the pop up flash so I can use all my speed lights off camera 😎 I'm getting there slowly with your help! Thank you 😎
Am I correct in the assumption that f11 1/200 for the main light balanced with the ambient light is equal in exposure to the f1.8 1/4000 ? The high speed sync thing is just mechanics, I'm more interested in how the available light to flash balance is maintained. It would appear it be the case giving shot #2 example ? I Got to give this a try!!

So, the "trick" was that studioflashes blast was so long that it was lighting the whole cameras sync-speed (=cameras shutters "real" time to reach start to end) ?
Hi, I just bought Paul c buff digi bee 800s. What do I need to buy to break the sync speed barrier?! I am so bummed out that I can't go past 1/250. I have the radio freq trig. Which do I need to purchase?! Please help!
You may scroll down a little at look at Kenneth Thomas replying tht he has successfully done it. Perhaps u may ask him as RUclips doesnt allow me to 'tag' you there :) Good luck and have fun :)
If you have Canon 600 EX or 600 EX-RT, they support High Speed Sync, so you should not have a problem with exceeding sync. But, HSS fires the flash multiple times during the exposure so you don't get a full power flash. Also, they are small flash, not studio flash.
Pure gold, amazing video. A lot of photographers sometimes push you to buy so expensives lights to get that kind of shots, but this video is glorius. I cant thank you enough.

Metz Mecalucz 11 optical trigger
Neewer NW871 HSS speed light set on Manual (full power)

To shoot high speed 1/4000 or above, is not necessary Flash Slave Trigger Hot Shoe Sync Adapter. The only thing that you need is a flash with High Sync, Camera with flash sync speed option. First mount your flash on top of your camera, set it up to Manual or ETTL mode full power, enable the H sync. turn on the strobes or flashes synchronized to slave 1. Thats it.
The higher end radio triggers like pocket wizard are fully compatible with High speed sync. Yongnuo and other thrid party flashes also have radio solutions.

What do u think of Andrew in this video Miley 🤣🤣🤣 Is he dashing

Love you man!

Hi buddy amazing video. Amazing techic. One question. The flash that you are using on camera is it a HSS flash?
Hi, sir. Thank you for the kind praise. Yes,.. flash on camera HAS to be HSS. Other flashes, NO HSS NEEDED :)
If a speed light has high speed sync does it mean we can do rear curtain sync with these speed light?

Same trick works with wireless trigger as long as the trigger and receiver is HSS compatible. Just set your flash to 1/1, any flash!
Please refer to Sony mirrorless as well as I as some others use Sony A7ii models

It's rather interesting that all people really need is to use optical triggering to get their lights to work. Everyone has been moving towards radio triggers without realising that they also have their drawbacks.

thank you for this help (and the help of your gorgeous models!) . . mostly everyone where i live says "2OO-25O syn speed is good enough" . . but not for 2.O-1.4 etc . . also, can we shoot these flashes indoors (with canon 58Oex-not 58O exii), canon 32Oex, canon 430ex)?
hi Sarah! suuuuure! you can break sync indoor or even outdoor :)

It all worked once I set the SB to 'M' 'FP' BOOOOMMM!! result 😎📸👍
+ThePParadigm BINGO!!! Done it! Thank you ☺️👍 (that's a big smiley face and a thumbs up if it hasn't come through that way)
Sorry Mathew.
RESULT 😎📸
I'd like to be able to trigger the flashes with the pop up flash so I can use all my speed lights off camera 😎
I'm getting there slowly with your help! Thank you 😎
this optical triger is not avilable plz send other link

i use a6000 with onsmo, can run f11 1/4000 with radio frequency. HSS onsmo is good as profoto.
onsmo is godox..
Flash point also godox
It will work with a radio on the camera and other 2 youngnuo speedlite off camera flash ?
Do i have tho have the speedlite in the camera ?

Am I correct in the assumption that f11 1/200 for the main light balanced with the ambient light is equal in exposure to the f1.8 1/4000 ? The high speed sync thing is just mechanics, I'm more interested in how the available light to flash balance is maintained. It would appear it be the case giving shot #2 example ? I Got to give this a try!!
does this mean that i can not apply this technique u are teaching on my d3200? it will be nice if you can do one with a camera without auto fp.

I have 3x Canon 600ex , so could I slap a couple of optical triggers on 2 of them, 1 on the camera?
If you have Canon 600 EX or 600 EX-RT, they support High Speed Sync, so you should not have a problem with exceeding sync. But, HSS fires the flash multiple times during the exposure so you don't get a full power flash. Also, they are small flash, not studio flash.
Great .... though I understood it with lot of struggle 😂
The most important thing is that u do understand it Neelesh 😂😂😂
