I was trying some diy diffuser hacks yesterday and randomly stumbled upon this video today. I tried the diffusers from dead Led light bulbs. It worked but with mixed results depending on the brand of the light bulb. The diffuser was taken off of a TCP brand 5000k flood light. The diffuser created purple fringing. I put a bulb diffuser from Energetic on the end of a paper towel roll and shoot the flash through the tube. It provides just a bit more light maybe a half a stop at most, but with nice fall off and allows a bit of directionality. Great for a bit of fill light for macro photography combined with using your light UNDER the subject trick. However, the best diy diffuser I tried was the plastic lid of a semi-reuseable Starbucks cup just now while watching this video. They aren't the standard lids that go on the paper Starbucks cups but the thicker plastic lids for the plastic Starbucks cups, just wow! Nice warm soft light. The shape of the lid provides greater surface area and bounce so the light is softer. It is also not too thin so no harsh over exposed spots, especially for faces, due to the flash. Thanks so much, you have a great channel, i learn a lot! Best wishes for the new year from Seattle, WA
Hi Andrew! I've learnt (from this video) that the helmet strap is worst when the flash is in the 'extended' position because the light source becomes further off-axis to the lens (4-6 inches further) - internal card, big card, lightsource pointed up, whale tail, etc. Thanks for taking time, trouble and money to test these out for us! Your southern neighbour.
Gotta agree with you, teacher.. the one you thought gives the best results is also my top choice, with the addition that after having applied color ps is even bettr..

Hi all, I can underline the winner diffuser as I have been using this as well, most of the time. I, thus far, have not found anything better for on camera speedlight shooting (well rounded for most events). Only the speedlight flash head turned backwards came close (but that is only indoors with reasonable size rooms). But overall, the dome diffuser has been the winner. Please note the silver kicker that comes with it (make sure you order this with white, amber domes, and silver kicker as minimum), that helps at longer distance and high ceilings shooting (still perfect though). Lastly, I have a copy of the Gary Fong kit (as in this video too, I believe) and works perfect. It is selling for £9.99 in the UK. Hope this helps :) Thanks Andrew very much for this video and allf of your comments.
This is so helpful! Thank you! When you "meter to zero," are you doing that BEFORE you turn the flash on? Or after you turn the flash on, in TTL mode? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Helmet strap shadow is bigger when flash is pointing UP, because light source is becoming higher compare to when its pointing direct on the face, it is kind of flashing from above.
Very informative. It seems to show that it's not the brand or even design of the diffuser that makes the difference, it's the position of the light source above the lens.

Is there some cold shoe attachment to fix the flash to the tripod mount so that the flash is below the camera? Off course, most cameras will then require the wireless flash trigger or a sync cord, but this would eliminate the helmet strap shadow. Also might be useful to dial down the flash exposure to -0.7 ev.

What were the problems you had when trying to attach the lightsphere to your canon flash? I do not have a Nikon flash that I can use to rescue the shoot.
i have a canon and a 580 11 flash, no problem attaching a light sphere
The diffusers that are pointing up will have more of a tendency to create the "helmet strap" shadow, because of the higher angle.
MagMod with it's 2 types of diffusers is a superior product IMO
I always test the flash @ 0 and adjust from there
