Vlog 28: Campervan trip to the Gower Peninsula

  • This is the video of my first proper trip out in the van, sleeping in it overnight and actually using it as a campervan. I went to visit Nick Twinney (aka "Shevanigans" on RUclips) who lives near Swansea, and he took me for a tour around the Gower which is where my father grew up and that side of my family is from. We visited Rhossili, Langland, Rotherslade and the Mumbles and I saw where my grandmother used to have a small chandlery which we visited many times when I was a child.
The campsite I stayed at was at Horton; it was OK though very blustery being right on the coast and the shower stalls, though clean, had nowhere sensible to put your clean clothes so they they'd stay dry while you shower! Weirdly, despite the site being practically empty (mid October), they chose to site me right next to a motorhome, which I'mm sure I disturbed when I left at 8am the following day.
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

8:10 I loved hearing about your grandmother and I love that you edited in that picture into the video ☺ my childhood was not forty years ago but I too relate to childhood haunts disappearing under the feet of progress 😢 it feels weird, like a tiny bit of me is lost forever, and I always feel like holding on to people that knew me at that place and time

I didn’t see a railway or a narrowboat in the video, but I saw a beautiful area of Wales which I should surely want to visit if ever I cross the pond. I just cannot get over how beautiful that area really is. How surprising that you had just revealed your Welsh origins, David Gwyn, and now we see that the Gower is specifically where you are from. You showed us enough footage to make me wonder if it really is possible for an area to be that lovely. Many thanks for sharing.

David ? I thought your name was Gwyn, anyway I told you the lanes were narrow LOL nice to see the Gower again, we only live about 15 miles from there and go as often as possible and being NT members we get to park for free, yippee. Like camping as time goes on and the more trips you make you'll discover the items you will need to make your life easier, like a credit card to book into a hotel. Only joking. Good film, your going to be busy with the boat and the van

I’m a big fan of both of your channels. I wonder if you know that there’s an abandoned mining town in Arizona USA called Swansea. It started in 1862 as a silver mining operation. The purest ores were shipped 30 miles to the Colorado River, then downriver to the Gulf of California, then across the Pacific Ocean and around Cape Horn to Wales. George Mitchell, who hailed from Swansea, Wales, was a metallurgist for the owners of the mining company.

Well this is quite the coincidence. I had subscribed to your other channel because you traveled up the river soar (where I live). Now I find you in a camper van in the mumbles where my grandparents owned a small hotel. If my memory serves me correctly it was the building to the right of the Pilot. I have fond memories of playing there as a child around 35 to 40 years ago also.

All the memories that you'd otherwise never had remembered come back to you along with a surprise of that forgotten magical feeling you had there as a child, good feeling, actually amazing feelings.

Great thing those camper vans are. I remember well when I called one home for almost a year. I found I would travel more back then than I do now. There is something to be said of having all your needs in a small box on wheels that you drive over a caravan.

Very nice! Most impressed that you inserted your grandmothers shop into the modern facade, excellent video editing. I spent a long weekend on the Gower a few years back, with a view to flying a radio aerial on a kite to contact ham radio friends in the USA. It was flat calm...
Recently we parked up on the cliffs in North Norfolk, it was so windy that we had to move the van and point it nose into the wind to prevent motion sickness.
I keep fluffy slippers in my van... Micro fibre towels... Welcome to van life.

The Gower is such a lovely place. I have anchored in Oxwich Bay a few times and had it completely to myself. There are also loads of great campsites in the Bay with very pretty walks down to the beach. Golden sands which slope very gently - very safe when the children were little. They could wade out about 300 yards and still only be up to their waists. Pembrokeshire next?

I love the sea, one of my favorite shows to watch on BBC America, was Doc Martin! Of course Port Isaac such a picture-esk sea side town. The closest I had ever been was Bath. Lovely place too. It is quite funny the only thing I did tour England and Scotland with, was a small backpack, a string, and a towel. hahaha Sort of Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy mode. I would buy my cloths every other day, where I was, and ship the dirty ones home...when I arrived at home I had a whole lot of laundry to do, but all of it reminded me of the places I had been. Great way to travel! Cheers, God bless, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Thank you for sharing your childhood memories with us, BTW Great story telling!

Did the man from Shananigans stay elsewhere. I take it you didn't make him sleep on the grass, outside at the campsite. It was lovely to hear your family memories. It's funny, but I live on an island and nowhere is more then ten miles away and yet I might go for a walk somewhere I went as a kid 3 miles from home and I've not been there for 20 or more years and memories come flooding back. Silly things like a derelict wall or a steep path is still there. I love Wales and I have been to most places across Wales, but not the Gower peninsula. We would have driven passed it but not gone on it. We always stayed in self catering cottages and one year we stayed in a very small village just north of Swansea with a stream and stone arched road bridge outside the front door and we visited many places in the southern half of Wales from there. One thing we always noted, was that Wales is beautiful no matter where you go and we went through some off the beaten track places too. I always learnt how to pronounce the place names too, I was never a lazy visitor in that respect.

Spent a week in Gower last year on the north west coast line. Loved it although Swansea city centre itself was a bit rough. Went in June so the weather was better for us. Only 1 day of rain.

Having had the pleasure of living on Gower for five years early in the eighties it fills me with great joy each time I revisit. Yes it has changed in places, but remains oh so beautiful. Lovely vlog David, thank you.
