Lyrics:
It was back in ‘32 when times were hard
He had a Colt .45 and a deck of cards
Stagger Lee
He wore rat-drawn shoes and an old stetson hat
Had a ‘28 Ford, had payments on that
Stagger Lee
His woman threw him out in the ice and snow
And told him, “Never ever come back no more”
Stagger Lee
So he walked through the rain and he walked through the mud
Till he came to a place called The Bucket Of Blood
Stagger Lee
He said, “Mr Motherfucker, you know who I am”
The barkeeper said, “No, and I don’t give a good goddamn”
To Stagger Lee
He said, “Well bartender, it’s plain to see
I’m that bad motherfucker called Stagger Lee”
Mr. Stagger Lee
Barkeep said, “Yeah, I’ve heard your name down the way
And I kick motherfucking asses like you every day”
Mr Stagger Lee
Well, those were the last words that the barkeep said
‘Cause Stag put four holes in his motherfucking head
Just then in came a broad called Nellie Brown
Was known to make more money than any bitch in town
She struts across the bar, hitching up her skirt
Over to Stagger Lee, she starts to flirt
With Stagger Lee
She saw the barkeep, said, “O God, he can’t be dead!”
Stag said, “Well, just count the holes in the motherfucker’s head”
She said, “You look like you ain’t scored in quite a time.
Why not come to my pad? It won’t cost you a dime”
Mr. Stagger Lee
“But there’s something I have to say before you begin
You’ll have to be gone before my man Billy Dilly comes in,
Stagger Lee”
“I’ll stay here till Billy Dilly comes in, till time comes to pass
And furthermore I’ll fuck Billy Dilly in his motherfucking ass”
Said Stagger Lee
“I’m a bad motherfucker, don’t you know
And I’ll crawl over fifty good pussies just to get to one fat boy’s asshole”
Said Stagger Lee
Just then Billy Dilly rolls in and said, “You must be
That bad motherfucker called Stagger Lee”
Stagger Lee
“Yeah, I’m Stagger Lee and you better get down on your knees
And suck my dick, because if you don’t you’re sure to be dead”
Said Stagger Lee
Billy Dilly dropped down and slobbered on his head
And Stag filled him full of lead
Oh yeah.

Nick Cave single handedly makes Australia a place of culture
No mate. We have many talents.
@@lucylovic I am not doubting that. I was a big fan of ACDC when I was young. I am just saying that Nick Cave, all by himself, puts Australia on the cultural map.

I like this song because of its positive message

Be yourself lee.
Thanks 🙏 that’s the best comment I’ve seen on any song in a long long time, or ever
Yeah, I guess I do too now.
It is just so uplifting and joyous😂
Nick Cave is Australia's - if not one of the world's - greatest ever wordsmiths - his ability to paint a picture with lyrics is undeniably unique - simply brilliant
Thanks for the support, it’s my utmost pleasure having you here, thanks for your support you have been giving me all these years, I wouldn’t be here if not you my lovely fan. I hope you find joy and happiness in my songs?😊
This is the perfect choice for ‘first dance’ at a wedding
good lord 😂
I wouldn't get married for my 6th time otherwise
😂
I listened to this for the first time with my dad when we were on our way to the Huntington Gardens. He suggested that we play it in the tearoom.
Well if you say so 😂
At first I thought it was the guitar wailing.. until I realised it was Blixas' wail of doom and my head exploded. I am writing this with no head.
I lost my eardrums to it too
That's impressive. 😮
"It did occur to me one night, as I performed Stagger Lee in full priapic flight, that Stagger Lee does not shoot Billy Dilly with an actual gun at all, but that his being “filled full of lead. Bang! Bang! Bang!” was simply a metaphor for the force of Stag’s ejaculation, and Blixa’s terrifying and inhuman screeching at the end orgasmic in nature. This made me wonder, chillingly at the time, what sleeping with Blixa must be like - something I am sadly unable to elaborate on." - Nick Cave
That is hilarious!
he just is super hans,
kutty superfast was that the bad thing?🤔
@@TheCaptain610 I have thought this too

Only Nick Cave could manage to still look menacing in a pink "Take That love you" T-shirt and while pants! Great song!
lol! So true so true! lol
You know, he is not menacing in spite of his outfit but because if it. It s part of the perversion and utterly brilliant.
@@dyathink lynchian
I remember years ago the RUclips comment section were going on about how Nick had to wear that T-Shirt to counter-balance the intense and ruthless machismo of the lyrics.
No-one else could of sung this + being Soo entraining as Nick Cave. I have never been a big fan. After seeing Stagger Lee. Nick is talented, funny. Great entertainer. The theatrics, the dancing, the uncensored swearing & dirty lyrics. It's like watching a Quentin Tarantin movie Shock, violence, swearing, humour, guns cool music, crime, & quirky entertainment. I love it. It's art & if you take it seriously & don't laugh them that's weird because So much is banned due to discrimination or too crude + disturbing. It's funny like "Jackie Brown" or pulp fiction. " banned from saying or
I love Blixas screams at the end so much. Just inhuman sounds
Yes like some anguished demon from the pits of hell!! Awesomeness!
@Snatch Dizzy that album is awesome! His screams in Armenia are nuts
His screams are legendary. Nothing on earth like them.
Genuinely thought that was guitar screeches.
Jack White tried to mimic Blixa's vocals in his whos with me album and actually managed to pull it off pretty well in my opinion
The baddest character in this song is the woman who throws him out and tells him to never come back...
They should have done more with her.
To me Nick Cave is the Stephen King of music.
More like Faulkner honestly
@@alexeverson3604 I appreciate the reference, thanks.
They look similar
that's an insult to Nick Cave.
Stephen king isn’t nearly in the same league as Nick Cave
so elegant, so dirty, so vile, so graceful, so intense, so smooth..the tension builds and builds and then the violence explodes..phew..amazing..
Exactly!
It's so raunchy yet he and the dancers are emitting some sort of vibe as if it should be sexy. It's bizarre and mesmerizing maybe because I was such a fan of the original song.
Those who replied are born for expressing stupidity!😏🤪🥴
An absolutely apt description!
It's a masterpiece. Very clever, funny and entraining. I love it.
Wife caught me singing this in the shower full tilt. She doesn't know the song.... She's worried.
I often joke that with some of his songs what's really going through his mind and does Susie sleep with one eye open LOL

I was looking for the 1959 hit for Lloyd Price "Stagger Lee" and found this. Thinking it was a new cover version I gave it a play. I was shocked but in a good way. This is brilliant. This guy is a charismatic genius.
If you like this song, go check out "brother my cup is empty" or " papa won't leave you henry" 2 of the best songs ever in my opinion
P.s gotta read the lyrics to fully appreciate them
Check out the Grateful Dead's version of Stagger Lee. Variations on a theme. "As Stagger Lee lit a cigarette she shot him in the balls..."

I guess Stagger Lee is Henry Lee's badass bro
lol I thought the same thing
No one's putting Stagger in a well.
I know you mean the Nick Cave from the same album, but my first thought was Henry Lee Lucas, which...also kind of fits.
Maybe the girl from Henry Lee is the same girl that was badass enough to kick Stagger Lee out into the ice and snow and told him to never come back no more.

Can't point one bad song on Murder Ballads. Albums like that are so rare and they stand the test of time.
Harry Callahan Ahem, that's PJ Harvey. If you like Nick check out her work. She's amazing.
for me Death is Not the End just doesn't fit in with the rest, mind you, I'm not religious so that probably doesn't help.

I don’t understand why you never hear this on the radio?
...because radio went dead after first try...
I wonder how come this song was never on MTV!? 💙🤣💙
This is how I feel each time I enter in a bar...but after I just take a beer and say "thanks".
Hahaha
Blixa is the icing on this perfect cake 🍰
I am very amused by the fact that it is the kind of video in which the record label spent a reasonable amount of money with zero chance of MTV airing it.
Anto Dixon MTV Brasil also did it!
Coz he sells records
I don't think they would have spent much on it. It's in a studio, the set looks pretty cheap. There's only two dancers and the band. The lighting, camera work and editing is very good though, so that makes up for a lot of of it. Plus, Nick knows how to play it up for the camera.
@@stopbunsen the editing is amazing
Yeah. It looks like they shot almost all of the videos for this album on the same sound stage. Probably spent two or three days rolling, then dumped them in an editor’s lap and went on tour.
As an Australian. Nick cave Is an inspiration. His words. Compositions and stage presentation. X
"I'm forever near a stereo saying, 'What the fuck is this garbage? ' And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers"
- Mr. Nick Cave
I'm not disagreeing about the RHCP... but this IS NOT the hill to die on. This is, at best, interesting, and, at worst, a bombastic self-indulgence. Either way, it isn't substantially better than the Peppers. It doesn't help that there is already a GREAT song called Stagger Lee (based on the same true event, I suppose). And the original isn't a self-indulgent abstraction of the idea of music like this is. I can believe this guy has done better, though, and I'm off to look for that now. Bottom line: If you've gotten to the point where you can only imagine making grotesque reflections ABOUT art, you should just find something else to do. This is the musical equivalent of someone who can only get aroused by watching oiled up midgets in walrus costumes fisting each other's assholes while singing the Canadian national anthem. That's NOT sex anymore.
Mr. John Frusciante, folks
@@TroubleToby3040I have to totally disagree. But that's cool.

i SAW HIM LIVE he is amazing very intense energy you can feel it hitting you everywhere, never felt this on a concert before
Indeed, seen him many times and he's the best live.
Saw him live for the first time in 2017ish and it was incredible! I saw Grinderman in 2011ish and they were great too.
Saw him live in 1997, where he downed a bottle of red wine on stage, tried three times to play Into My Arms while complaining about how difficult it is to play and sing at the same time, had to be prevented by security from throwing a large synthesizer into the crowd, and finally went to the release party for Prodigy's Fat Of The Land where he danced like a lunatic for an hour, punched a guy and got thrown out. I've seen him a few times since, but that was the most memorable one for me, if not for him

Rem World is over
I regularly come back to watch this video, just because I love to see Blixa's display of the epitome of pure oldschool awesomeness.
So do I. I actually find it funnier now I know the words + start laughing when I know what Nick Cave is going to do and sing next. He tells the story of Stagger Lee sooo well and the drama + dancing. I love the video clip. It's my sense of humour Anton else rather than Nick Cave could not of pulled off the ballad, story, song like He is so funny. I live the tune too.
I love how hes always dancing with his guitar, but rarely ever play anything on it ;)
Nick talked about Blixa’s contributions on guitar in an interview that I watched, he was not of course their lead or even rhythm guitarist, he played his guitar tracks over a mostly finished song in the studio, and they were just weird, unique riffs. They didn’t always go through The entire piece but just kind of peppered in here and there sometimes. Basically to add intrigue, an extra layer of sound. Plus he just also looked good on stage. 😊
That bass, song is INCREDIBLE. Murder Ballads is a masterpiece.
Needs to be acknowledged as the greatest songwriter now…. While he can enjoy that accolade NOW…. the lyrics, the stories he’s given us for so many years…. One of my most favourite lines… “What’s your pleasure, asked the barman, he had a face like boiled meat” May your God bless you Nick 💙
Nick Cave is maybe the coolest man ever
This one has slowly become my favorite of theirs.
This song and video is just another level. I fucking love it.
This song is a classic. Still waiting for the day Nick Cave is featured on an episode of Bluey.
I’m here for the demented screaming at the end.
Totally crazy. I remember the first time I heard it, at its release. I thought "oh yeah it's very cool, the power is growing until the explosive end". Then I read the lyrics (first I ask my english teacher to help me to traduce, I'm french. But she didn't want. I would lately understand why). When I understood the lyrics, the song appears to me as one of my favorite ever. A western, a movie in a song.
ahah la gueule qu'a dû faire le prof ^^
Imma start dancin like this!
I love his face at 2:30 "Oh god he can't be dead" :D
Why
I want this song played at my funeral
Kids, this is what is meant by “effortlessly cool”.
Most awesomely homoerotic Nick Cave video ever.
Couldn't agree more. He's awesome
I can´t stop listening to this video. The bass line is perfect and my testosterone level goes way up after i watch it.
Male gogo dancers + pink Take That shirt make this video 1000 times more badass
Today my friend and I were driving through the country and listening to this in my car. We got bogged and Stagger Lee came up and helped us out. He had a knife and a huge four wheel drive and spoke to us about hunting... the most terrifying experience ever.
His Face alone is worth its weight in gold.
I know. It's sooo funny & entertaining watching Nick dance around singing. He's not trying to be funny . He just nails a perfect performance.. There is not one second of that video, that is not entertaining. For 3 minutes I am just glued to that video I still laugh because Nick is a great entertainer!. I was introduced to it only 2 yrs ago. Every once in a while which I feel like like having a giggle, I put it on.I have not got sick of it. I'm smiling from beginning to end. It lifts me up makes me laugh. Thanks Nick for making that video because I really enjoy it

Stagger Lee is a true murder story. Lots of other artists have sung about this 1895 murder in St Louis. Google is for Stagger Lee and Stackolee. even The Clash (Wrong em Boyo) sung about it.
