  • I recently picked up a few Dell Optiplex 360's from my school, and I decided give them a good cleaning after 10 years of usage in a classroom. They are finally replacing them with Dell 7050's. As they were placed in the trash, I picked them up. I could not stand to see such beautiful machines go to waste. I tried to clean them up and get them up and running again. In the future I am planning to give them a full upgrade such as a new CPU, SSD, graphics card, and more ram.
Here are the current specs on these machines:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 @2.53GHz
    Memory: 2GG DDR2
Graphics: Intel G31 Express Chipset Family
HDD: Did not come with one.
    Power Supply: 235 Watt
    Optical Drive: DVD ROM

When it comes to Optiplex's and pretty much Dell's otjher lines, the number 3 in 360 indicates it was the budget model of it's day. Today Dell maintains the 3000, 5000, 7000, and even 9000 numbering scheme, higher the number such as 9020, the higher performance and build quality you can expect. Especially with stepping up to the 5000 lines. Usually more ram slots, higher end stock CPUs, Vpro as options. Important in business. But the jump from say a 7020 to a 9020 isn't that big. I love the Latitude laptop line myself. THe older 6000 line was a premium line, and these laptops were built like thanks with tri-metal construction. If you've ever bought a budget laptop, then had a chance to use one of them models, it's epic. I gave one to a very close student of mine a few years back and it just totally blew him away.

I just came across your video, reminded me of my first days too. Kudos on the video, has anyone ever made the comparison of your voice and napoleon dynamite's brother?! It's uncanny!

When system of that age when it's slow its normally due to failing hard drives in my case install an ssd in it and see the performance come back to life, at least if you wanna use this for windows 10 get a 480GB SSD and get a core 2 duo and 8GB ram because I have a same but it's a core i3 model with 12GB and 1TB ssd with windows 10 installed

Great job, kept me entertained the whole time even though I'm not a computer guy. There were some parts that felt a little slow, like when you were waiting for stuff to download and stuff. Other than that, it was a great first video. Keep it up, I think this channel will go places if you stay dedicated. 👍

I had the same bug in windows 7 on a MacPro of mine with the ram sitting at 90+% I recommend getting a £12 120GB SSD and 2GB extra ram and sticking 10 on it will run like a dreaM

Just came across someone trying to sell this as an old system which has been sitting around for 5 years and they don't even know anything of what is inside it or if it works and they are asking $50 and it is not even a restored system in any way. I laughed. They later reduced the price to $30. I still laughed.
If you use your system as is with lubuntu 14LTS 64bit it will be shockingly far more functional. I have run this very system with a linux usb boot drive with persistent memory and 2gb RAM and it is totally usable for web and streaming video. Ideally upgrade to at least 3gb or 4gb of RAM running a linux distro and it will be very functional. I have done it. With 4gb RAM it will be fine for win10 but I would still prefer to run it with linux for far more headroom and less windows overhead to bog the system down.
