The D7200 is a purpose built camera and far from lack-luster. Its DX format is desired by wildlife photographers. The frame rate of 6 - 7 FPS is acceptable. It handles hi ISO exceptionally well and has an adequate buffer. It's certainly not a 'preferred' landscape or astral camera due to the DX format so it wasn't intended to be a one but is capable of doing so nicely. It's also $1000 cheaper than the newer and faster D500. With the new features, it's a 7D killer.

TCS, you guys are on a roll! The intro scene looks stunning, I'm talking Hollywood class stunning! You've become my absolute favorite now, topping DRtv. Btw, is our Pentax KS2 review coming? Highly interested on your take on the KS2, especially since you skipped the KS1. Now about the 7200, when I hear 'compromising ruggedness' as the excuse for excluding the articulated screen, it irritates me real bad! lol The target group of this camera is very less likely to toss them around. So if such a valuable addition is skipped for ALL the rest of Us because a small subset of people in an even smaller subset of usage scenario *may 'potentially'* break it loose is like saying we shouldn't make buildings more than 2 stories high because an extremely small percentage may jump off and commit suicide! Sounds like a cheap logic to me. 60D has had flippy screen since 2010 and broken screens are not even in the top 5 list of failure causes! So I don't understand why Nikon, after adding even more useful movie features on this 7200, still decided against that flippy screen the third time! I've been waiting for it since D7000.

zeebazu I agree completely! This also happened with the Canon EOS 7D MK2. No flip screen and all the sales reps quote is the whole ruggedness speech. Our friend and repeat TCS video guest Mike Drew is a journalist who does horrible things to his cameras on a daily basis. He has long used the Canon 60D and 70D both with flip screens and yet they've survived after hundreds of thousands of frames. Both his cameras look like they've been left outside for years and used as wheel chocks to keep cars from rolling. I've personally in my twelve years at the store never seen a flip screen break because of the articulation even at the point and shoot level. We really appreciate you watching and supporting us.Chris @ TCS TV

That shot starting around 4:36 is FANTASTIC! The branch shadows on Chris's face are hilarious! I did not notice them at all the first time through last March. I just re-viewed the review to remind myself why I'm not buying this camera and was noticing some very funny shooting going on. By the time I hit the 5 minute mark I was laughing out loud. Great fun Jordan.

I intend to buy my first DSLR for travel, portraits, timelapse, panaroma & astrophotography.. may be occasional videos too.
Can you suggest me what I should be going for? I was considering 70D / D7200. Along with the kit lens 18-135 stm or 18-140 I also intend to get Sigma 17-50 f2.8, is it a good options?

I agree with this, I'm looking to buy the D7200 upgrading from a D3300 and the changes are huge.
Not every update can have substancial changes and improvements, especially if the older model was good, it seems to me like they fixed some of the D7100's issues and added the useful feature of Wi-Fi.

    Great video again guys thanks.
To defend Nikon a bit here, I think the D7200 is just a mid-life upgrade to maintain market position. The bar was set pretty high with the D7100. You can do sports with these cameras, but if you must have 10fps then Canon is the choice.
4k and touchscreen etc. would also have been cool - but another thing that annoys me is when people don't compare like for like with pricing in mind. A quick search online shows that a new D7200 costs around 30% less than the Canon 7DMkII - which also doesn't have those features, it just shoots quicker (and at the cost of lower optimal IQ).
The D7xxx line remain in my opinion the best VALUE crop DSLRs on the market, especially when you take into account the mature system of lenses available. Nikon are trying to maximise profits by using the same body chassis / basic design for as long as possible (hence no redesigned grip etc.), and I don't see any problem in this.
Personally I'm not even sure how committed Nikon is to the DX format going forward. If I were them I'd concentrate on my FX system where 90% of the best glass is, and look at a mirrorless alternative for those wanting smaller/lighter/cheaper/high fps - a DX body versus an FX body makes hardly any difference at all in size or weight if you're packing a pro zoom on it. This may be another reason why it is illogical for them to completely redesign the D7xxx series now. By the time the D7300 is due, it's not impossible that this market segment will be taken over by mirrorless bodies. The only remaining stumbling blocks really are AF, EVF and battery life.

The Camera Store Chris, I have a few specific questions, I hope you can oblige. 1) Have Nikon altered the ergonomics at all, ala the Nikon D750? This is something I have heard. Having tried the D90, D7000, D7100, D700, D750, and D810, my favourites are the D750 and D90 due to the depths of their grip, though "some ergonomic changes would be nice" seems to vaguely indicate not. 2) Can the video "record" button now be re-programmed when in Stills mode, to be set to something like ISO control (like the D750)? and 3), Does the 7200 import the new "group AF" option? Sidenote: I don't actually like the color profile of this video from the Sony; maybe it's the grading, but there seems to be a magenta cast to the shadows, as if the ISO had been pushed too high. Thanks!

The story about the Nikon D7200 is a simple one. It's a story about missed opportunities. Nikon took a huge step back in comparison to the spec-list of the D750. The D7200 is the top of the line DX camera, so why Nikon doesn't go further? It wouldn't be a competitor to the D750. Someone who is willing to go full frame, will go full frame. Someone who needs the crop-factor for his work/hobby, will go DX. There is absolutely no reason to get rid off some of the D750 specs, even though it already got the focussing system for example.
And to those who complain about tilt screens ... come on ... other companies build cameras with tilt screens for years and years. I never heard complaints that those fall apart if you just look at them. But ... if you want a fast AF in Live View ... Canon and Nikon for example are far away from other companies. After all this years I just can't understand why Canikon are that far behind. Even the old Sony A350 is faster in Live View AF then actual Canikons. Actually I love my D750, it's a great package in my oppinion, but in some terms it is simply outperformed by my Sony A6000 ... and that bothers me a lot!!!! I'm sorry for my grammar, but I'm not a native speaker.

First you say the improved buffer is "a huge improvement and a welcome addition." "(Low light focusing)... is a great improvement." Then, at the end you tell us "...we don't have a lot of substantial improvements..." there is no reason whatsoever to upgrade from the D7100 to the D7200.? No reason whatsoever....???
I am upgrading to this camera for the larger buffer and better low light focusing and those are very good reasons to upgrade.
Most upgrades to a camera line are incremental. That's just a fact of life. It's impossible to have revolutionary changes every time, especially with modern cameras being replaced every couple of years.

Hello Chris. I am from Argentina.
Nikon D7200 is recommended for video? To its quality of video I mean, not so much by the screen that it is not flip-flop. Or is it recommended another camera?
I do not have any, so I do not have references. I
know that maybe it is not advised to start with this camera, everyone
recommends starting with something simpler and then moving forward. But since I had the opportunity I wanted to start with a camera, which lasted a few years before I renewed it. I am a music teacher and I do audio projects, musicals, I would like to do something with the video as well. If you have any suggestion of another alternative without losing much quality. Here in Argentina the prices are very high and frightening. I
have no preference of any brand but in my country are not many brands
that arrive Nikon and Canon insurance, Sony in smaller quantity and very
expensive. Panasonic and Fujifilm almost nothing. I appreciate the suggestion and the time you take to respond. And I take the opportunity to congratulate you and your team for all the information they provide. Greetings from here South America and thanks again.

I agree with Chris regarding not upgrading from the D7100 to the D7200 but if you have a D5100 or one of the 3000 or 5000 series then upgrade. You can find refurbish D7200 at a good price or for a better lower price you can find refurbished or used D7100's out there.

Video is not as important to me since I have a GoPro for that, but I would certainly like to be able to shoot with these cameras as well. I can't decide between the d7200, 7d mark ii, and sony a7 ii. Some one reviewing the 300PF lens noticed that it's an "E" lens instead of a "G" lens and now has an electronic aperture like canon lenses and apparently "E" lenses will give you aperture changes in live view on cameras like the D7200 as a result. I found that interesting.

Personally this is the next camera I am going to buy to replace my D300s. I do a ton of nature and wildlife and this is excellent for that. Given the choice between the D7100 for $950.00 or the new D7200 $1159.00 this is a no brainer. In my situation the improvements are worth way more than $200.00.
No Anti-Aliasing Filter, a huge improvement in sharpness!
Massive Buffer Improvement, especially for wildlife.
Much better low light capabilities. Also important for what I do.
Expeed 4 and great a huge improvement in Focussing, and more.
60 FPS in video, which is likely to be used a lot.
I'm not saying you should upgrade from D7100, but if you are in the market for a high end DX as an upgrade for the D7000 and everything below or older; I say go for it!

Also seeing how some people seemed to have jumped ship in the DPR forums because of the tiny buffer on the D7100, i think the improved buffer with the D7200 would be reason enough for some to upgrade....

Interesting color grading in this video...scenes were a little surreal in color, but it gave a nice artistic vibe. Another great review guys!

Regarding the the -4.1EV shot, (f/2 at 1/125s and ISO 6400 = +3Ev) So your shot doesn't make sense unless you raised the shadows by 5 or 6 stops?

    Hey Chris!
Big fan of TCSTV, i appreciate all the effort you guys put into the videos
I was wondering if you would be able to start including lens names/focal lengths into the shot info when you guys cut to pictures throughout the video?
I'm always curious as to which lens/focal length is being utilized to produce said photos.
    Thanks in advance!

I see you used ISO 800 with very little or no noise. Unless you removed some of the noise before adding to the video or removed noise from the video in video edit. I find that impressive. I might be a few days away from buying the 7200 for me it would be a nice upgrade from the 5100 I have a hard time getting the 5100 to focus in conditions like in your office so that for me is a bonus. Oh I like how you hide you model I think a man in the woods I spotted him there. Thanks for this review

an extra frame means that you have an extra chance of capturing just that right moment.

What can you say about the D7200's high ISO performance, specifically 6400? Do you think I would see a real improvement over my D7000? Nikon says "yes" when I ask, but I thought I'd ask someone who has tried it and is not trying to sell me a new camera. Same question regarding the autofocus system in low light vs. the D7000. Thanks!

I've been waiting for the D7200 for some time, as I've shot with the D7100 and enjoyed the experience, but lack of changing aperture in live view is a non-starter and frankly a major misstep by Nikon, in my opinion; such a decision along with the 60p in 1.3x crop mode is a dismissal of my needs as a videographer who also does photography.

It’s a old but marvellous video. Seek ur help to decide whether it is still a relevant to buy d 7200 over d7500 -the newer camera with less mps- in 2019-don’t mind single slot in it. Currently own Nikon d5300 with 18-55, 50mm f 1.8, afp 70-300 n Sigma 17-50 f 2.8. Am not a pro n shoot food, portraits n landscape as a photo enthusiast. Shall appreciate ur early recommendation. Need body only. D7200 body costs $ 700 n d7500 $ 850 in Indian currency.
    My priority is sharper pics.
    Pl help
