Not really, as I haven't really seen quantization being used as an art form, unlike auto-tune being used on actual good singers, such as Ty Dolla $ign and T-Pain. In Jacob's music, they work well the way they do in All I need and Count the people. Where has quantization is just boring?

    • @zolin6840

Evan Yoon it’s not only just boring but also lazy. Because with quantization you can copy-paste anything anywhere in the song

@Jacob Collier When I first heard this song, I left a comment under the video saying it felt like I was showering in gold then going to have some toast and coffee in warm orange and cool blue lighting. I now understand why. This song has great value because REAL time was spent, not just throwing 3 tracks together and calling it a day. Then, listening to the break down is nourishment for both my musical knowledge and it encourages me to try something new.
And the main points Ive drawn from this video and other ones like it is, more is better IF you know how to add it, perfection lies in imperfection, and ALWAYS USE YOUR EARS. What may be off statiatically maybe what is right soundwise (ex. Switching time signatures, switching keys, going out of key, speeding up, slowing down, etc.)
Thank you Mr Collier, I am looking forward to the day we make music :)

I can count the 5 beats over each bar like he describes at 4:52, but it doesn't seem to line up with anything. Just like one could count 13 over this, but it wouldn't be very helpful...

    Jacob talking about quantization.
Quantized: “Not very many people can get jiggy to this. Like, I’m not about to go have some babies. ... Well I am, but for different reasons.” 15:32
    OK JC HAHA
Unquantized: rant about how it’s flexible and actually more human-like by being imperfect.
    Nice.

17:03 So I think it's about time for music software to stop being grid bass, that... it's one of my, like... real passions....is to get the grid out people psychologies. Because the moment we start thinking in grids, then everything becomes grids, and it's really, uh.... It's like instagram, SO not the real world.

If you have a drum machine and program a beat just set the quantize to about 50% to get that falling off the beat sound. Chill hop uses this technique often. I never get tired of great musicians talking shop. I'm glad to see JC uses Logic, I'm the only musician in my circle of friends that uses it, although I have several other DAWS.

Yes and no. How'd you learn to write that comment? Plus, Collier wouldn't be capable of doing what he does, without education.
