    6:34 “Sometimes I can pick up on something that he’s doing” perfectly sums up every musician’s reaction to Jacob Collier

    Sooo glad there’s another person that can appreciate what Jacob is doing seems like so many people are missing out, He really is giving us so much musically. So much to absorb, study, enjoy and aspire to. I found him through a Cory Henry youtube binge, the video of Jacob and Cory performing Cory’s arrangement of Billie Jean on BBC Proms been following his every move since✊🏽✌🏽

    You are so right to say "he was born to do this"...because he's such an extraordinary and rare package. A force majeure. And yes, we cannot underestimate the discipline and hard work it takes to gain mastery, and it's only when we do we can then bend it/mess around with it as he does superbly! Jacob comes from a musical family, and his Mother Suzie plays violin (see her briefly on a couple of his clips), and is a Professor at Royal Academy of Music in London...where Jacob studied and also at The Purcell School for Young Musicians. When he appears with orchestra e.g. Billie Jean with Cory Henry at London Proms (amazing)...and All Night Long - it's conductor Jules Buckley who's done the arrangements and is often not credited for them. As a Psychologist I too have thought about where Jacob came from...I mean he is that amazing package of knowledge/theory/fun/self effacement and astounding technique. A very happy and musical home, and all that indescribable stuff that adds up to the total package that makes it all work. Let's see how he goes with the fame and fortune stuff over the next few years. David, you also really 'get it'...music is in your bones, and you reveal at times, such in depth knowledge, technical and historical. It's an absolutely joy to watch and listen to you. THANK YOU.

    Thank you for some great reactions. I visited a concert with Jacob Collier during his world wide tour this summer (2022), long longed for after the pandemic.
    If you haven’t seen him live, that is something quite different. Most people in the audience are musicians and they are extatique. After the concert you are like “wha.. wha… what was I just experiencing???” It’s like a revelation, like having a religious experience with only music as a god. We were a bunch of “old” professional musicians, all very into complicated, advanced music since youth. All of us were blown away by the music, the perfection, the love and the playfulness. I had Frank Zappa as a musical house god since I was 10. Now (sorry mister Zappa) Jacob Collier took over the throne.
    I listened to all his available music during the last 3 years and I still get amazed every time. Still crying to his Moon River, In the Bleak Midwinter, and several songs from Djesse 3. Oh my!

    I love these reactions!!!!! Ugh….I need more of you reacting to him. I’ve been absorbed in his music for about 2 years. It’s fun watching such an accomplished musician get so excited and inspired by these videos. Thank you!!

    noooo! this is fun, but you MUST listen to the original, it is 1000000000 times better. also because ur musician, almost all his work has been transcribed. You've only experienced a fraction of his genius until you get into those videos. For example, do you hear the 7 uplets in this? Also, the person who commented about Moon River is correct. Until you listen to that with the transcription you do not really get Jacob. Same with transcription of Don't You Know and PYT, they will change your life

    • @buttons6171
      @buttons6171 2 года назад +7

      respectfully i disgree! well, regarding the original i do agree to an extent as those are the original forms of the songs and have been intricately crafted to be presented that way (especially with how detailed jacob's approach often is), though the live versions do have their own energy and charm of course.
      however speaking as a musician and someone who does check out JC transcriptions - yes, they can help illuminate a lot about his craft on a technical level and perhaps then understanding and learning from them better, but statements like "you can't really get jacob unless you watch the transcriptions" i can't get behind.
      "getting" an artist is purely subjective - someone can understand no formal music theory at all, but enjoy jacob's music immensely, and i don't think their enjoyment should be valued any less because they don't "get" theoretical understandings of the music, and i think this is the same for people of any level of musicianship. of course, transcriptions can help people appreciate complex music even more, but saying that they're a requirement to truly "get" the musician...i don't think so! of course, you can disagree with this as well, each to their own, hehe
      sorry for the rant i've left at your doorstep, i hope i haven't been too rude! i just think jacob fans/theoryheads in general can get a little... gatekeepy at times HAHA and to be honest i think still the most important thing, like david has said in his jacob reaction videos, is ultimately how the music itself moves you. peace :)

    I love watching your reactions. You are sooo passionate about music and your ability to so easily pick up on what you're hearing and play it back amazes me. My favorite thing is when you get lost in the music and you're just feeling it and gettin' your groove on. Love it!

    Thank you so much for this wonderful series. I loved every minute of it. One thing you noted in the last video which I thought was expressed so well but I failed to comment on it was your comment that Jacob "doesn't dumb anything down. He plays his music his way and you're welcome to come along or not." I guess that's more a paraphrase of what you said but I loved it. I'd like to share two FYI's If you look at where Jacob drops his stick and picks it up it is all perfectly in the time of the song. Making me believe that was just a little musical canard for our appreciation. Two: you mentioned figuring out some of Jacob's stuff. I can't recommend strongly enough his Logicpro breakdown of this song. It is a totally fascinating, wide ranging journey where you get to travel along with Jacob and some of his interior thought process and in its way it covers so much more than just music. Just start the video and it's actually quite addictive. Thank you again. Jacob, Logicpro of "Time Alone With You": ruclips.net/video/Naxu8D0xXVU/видео.html

    Jacob is of a different planet, his mind works on entire different level than most people, glad to see you reacting to him as well.
    This song especially, he made a breakdown for the production and he just explains some highly advanced concepts about rhythm and groove.

    9:48 Jacob doesn't need a click track at all, just see a live recording and you will see what I am talking about. I'm also still trying to figure out how he recorded this. So far, I guess the one on the left side must be the first one to record because he is the one with the "speech" and the others fill the gap when he changes the mute in the piano, between other things. Then the others could be in any order.

    • @Proghead88
      @Proghead88 2 года назад +1

      It still makes more sense from a practicality standpoint to record this to click. He's got great rhythm but he's also not going to make it any harder on himself. He's also equally skilled at making click tracks and recording to them while sounding natural. If I were him I would have done the drums first. Much more inspiring once you play keys and sing on top of it (dynamics are much more realistic).

    You mention looking into how Jacob gets from one chord to the next - a few places you might start:
    There's a great harmonic analysis of his cover of "Moon River" (fist listen to Jacob's cover first if you haven't, of course): ruclips.net/video/UTDHylJZMXU/видео.html
    And there's a clip from a lecture he did talking about his "In The Bleak Midwinter", where he explains how (and why) he modulates to "G half sharp": ruclips.net/video/HUGoUHKAGAE/видео.html (And here is his performance of that song: ruclips.net/video/mPZn4x3uOac/видео.html )
    Have fun!

    Hey Dave! Glad you have started reacting to Jacob's music. He is such a stellar artist. You may like this rendition of his: Jacob Collier - Lua (feat. MARO) [live]. It is quite different in musical theme to the other stuff you have watched, but still sublime in my book.

    I know you are a VERY ACCOMPLISHED musician with years of training and experience. . . BUT. .
    When you try and play some of the arpeggios etc. that Jacob does. . . . I hate to say it. . . But you sound _inadequate_
    I really do not mean to belittle you or criticise your ability. . . But when put next to Jacob Collier (who you have acknowledged "comes from another planet") you just don't match his ability.
